Brooklyn Bedding Bowery Mattress Overview

Brooklyn Bedding is a unique retailer of direct-to-consumer mattresses because unlike many bed-in-a-box companies, the brand owns its own factory. This allows them to cut out middlemen and pass savings onto its customers. As a result, it’s known for making quality mattresses at affordable prices.

The Bowery is the most affordable mattress in the Brooklyn Bedding line. It is a hybrid mattress with a more streamlined design. At the same time, it’s so comfortable.

Brooklyn Bedding Bowery Mattress Firmness and Feel

A mattress’ firmness and feel influence how it interacts with your preferred sleep position(s) and other sleep needs. So, let’s dive into the firmness and feel on the Brooklyn Bedding Bowery.

How Firm Is the Bowery?

We ranked the Bowery around a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale. The industry standard for average firmness is 6.5/10, so this suggests the Bowery is a little bit softer than medium-firm.

Firmness is subjective, so depending on your body weight and personal preferences, you might find that this mattress feels a touch firmer or softer. Heavier-weight sleepers might rank this mattress firmer because they’re likely to press through the softer layers on top into the firmer support layers underneath.

Sleeping on the Bowery

We didn’t experience enough support while back-sleeping on the Bowery. Our hips sank into the mattress too far and tugged the spine out of alignment. Back sleepers should consider one of Brooklyn Bedding’s more supportive models.

Brooklyn Bedding Bowery - Side Sleeping

We enjoyed good pressure relief while side-sleeping on this mattress. We didn’t feel jammed up around the shoulder or hip, which are common hot spots for side sleepers. Light- and average-weight side sleepers should feel comfortable on this mattress. However, heavyweight side sleepers might press through the softer layers and into the firmer support layers underneath.

In our experience, this mattress is not supportive enough for stomach-sleeping. Our hips sank into the bed and pulled the spine out of alignment. People who spend all night on their stomachs will want to seek out a dedicated mattress for stomach sleepers.

What Does the Bowery Feel Like?

Overall, the Bowery has a balanced foam feel. The soft layer of gel memory foam on top offers pressure relief, but it’s bouncier and more responsive than conventional memory foam. The coils add lots of good bounce, so sleepers shouldn’t feel stuck in this mattress.

Average-Weight Sleepers: 130 lb–230 lb

Average-weight back sleepers won’t obtain adequate spinal support on the Bowery, which is on the softer side. That softness is a boon for side sleepers, who should enjoy nice pressure relief around the shoulder and hip. This mattress is not supportive enough for average-weight stomach sleepers.

Heavyweight Sleepers: Over 230lbs

The Bowery isn’t suitable for heavyweight sleepers. Heavyweight back and stomach sleepers won’t obtain enough spinal support and will want to look for a more supportive mattress for heavy people. Meanwhile, heavyweight side sleepers will press through the softer layer and into the firmer support layer, causing pressure around the shoulder and hip.

Lightweight Sleepers: Under 130 lb

Lightweight back sleepers might get enough spinal support on the Bowery. Lightweight side sleepers should fare the best on this mattress and will enjoy pleasant pressure relief around the shoulder and hip. Lightweight stomach sleepers should get the support they need while stomach-sleeping. All told, it should be a good mattress for lightweight sleepers.

Brooklyn Bedding Bowery Mattress Construction

Alright, so now you know what it feels like to sleep on top of the Bowery. Next, let’s peel back the cover on this mattress and take a peek at what’s inside! We’ll assess this bed’s construction layer by layer and share how different materials impact performance and feel.

Cover

The Bowery has a thin, breathable, stretchy cover that allows sleepers to easily interact with the top layer of the mattress.

Comfort Layers

The primary comfort layer on the Bowery consists of quilted gel memory foam, which is soft and pressure-relieving. This helps explain why sleepers shouldn’t feel stuck in this bed.

Brooklyn Bedding Mattress Review

Underneath, there’s a 2” layer of transitional comfort foam, which is firmer than the memory foam and eases sleepers into the support layer.

Support Layer

The support layer on the Bowery is made from Ascension X Coils, which is durable and lends structure and support to the mattress.

Mattress Height

The Brooklyn Bedding Bowery mattress is 10” tall.

Brooklyn Bedding Bowery Mattress Performance

If you’ve read this far, you now know a lot about the Brooklyn Bedding Bowery, but there are still important factors to consider. We ran the Bowery through the gamut of tests with regard to temperature regulation, motion transfer, edge support, and more.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

While all-foam mattresses are often known for trapping some heat, the Bowery does a decent job of sleeping cool. That’s thanks to the thin, breathable cover, gel infusion, and airflow-promoting coils.

Motion Transfer

The Bowery’s ability to isolate motion seems pretty average. The foams do a decent job of absorbing motion, but because the gel memory foam is bouncy, there’s some transfer across the surface of the mattress. While you might feel big movements from a partner or pet, this should be a decent mattress for couples.

Edge Support

As with motion transfer, we found that the Bowery performed average when it comes to edge support. While the edge collapsed a bit when we sat and laid down on it, we didn’t feel like we were going to be ejected onto the floor.

Brooklyn Bedding Bowery - Edge Support

Durability

As a value mattress, the Bowery isn’t the longest-lasting bed around. But it is made with quality foams that should be more durable than some foams on the market.

Off-Gassing

You might notice a touch of initial off-gassing from the Bowery, but this should dissipate within 48 hours.

Noise

We didn’t observe any notable noise from the Bowery, though it’s possible the coils could squeak over time.

Sex

The best mattress for sex is one that allows partners to change positions easily. Because the Bowery is fairly bouncy and responsive, it should be a decent option. Partners shouldn’t feel stuck in this bed.

Common Bowery Mattress Complaints

In our research, we observed a few common complaints about the Bowery. Heavier-weight sleepers report this mattress might not offer enough pressure relief or support. That mirrors our assessment. Anyone looking for a highly supportive mattress (e.g. some back and most stomach sleepers) will probably not be satisfied with this bed.

How Does The Brooklyn Bedding Bowery Compare to Other Mattresses?

Curious how the Bowery compares to other bed-in-a-box mattresses? We’ve done the comparison shopping for you by pitting the Bowery against two other online, all-foam beds: the original Casper and the Nectar.

Bowery vs. Casper

Both the Bowery and the original Casper are bed-in-a-box mattresses, but the Casper’s construction is much more complex than the Bowery’s. The Bowery has four layers: a gel memory foam comfort layer, a firmer transition layer, 6″ of Ascension X coils, and a 1″ foam base layer. Meanwhile, the Casper features a layer of AirScape foam over a memory foam layer with Zoned Support, all resting on a base layer of high-density foam. The zoning makes the Casper firmer near the center of the mattress (for extra spinal support) and softer near the head and foot (for added pressure relief). The Bowery is not zoned.

Casper Mattress - Construction And Foam Layers

Likely because of the Casper’s Zoned Support system, these beds also differ when it comes to firmness. We ranked the Bowery a touch softer than average at 6/10, while we ranked the Casper a bit firmer than average at 7/10.

In spite of their differences, the Bowery and Casper have similar feels. They both offer a balanced, responsive, and fairly bouncy foam construction.

Finally, these beds differ dramatically in terms of price. A queen-size, all-foam Bowery starts at $, while the same size, all-foam Casper is much more expensive at a starting price of $1295.00.

Who Should Get the Bowery?

  • People who are looking for a value mattress
  • Light- and medium-weight side sleepers

Who Should Get the Casper?

  • People who are looking for a slightly firmer mattress
  • Back sleepers

Learn more about the original Casper in our in-depth Casper mattress review.

Brooklyn Bedding Bowery vs. Nectar

The Bowery and the Nectar have many differences. The Bowery has a simple construction that layers gel memory foam over a transition foam layer and individually-wrapped coils. The Nectar layers gel memory foam over a transition layer of Hi-core memory foam and a thick, high-density support foam.

Nectar Mattress - Construction And Foam Layers

While the Nectar has thicker comfort layers than the Bowery, it’s still a touch firmer. We ranked the Bowery around 6/10 (just a touch softer than average) and the Nectar around 6.5/10, or right around medium-firm.

Additionally, these beds have notably different feels. The Bowery has a responsive, bouncy feel, while the Nectar has more of the slower-moving feel that’s associated with memory foam.

These beds also differ when it comes to price. The all-foam Bowery is a value mattress that starts at $ for a queen. The same size Nectar costs significantly more at a starting price of $1099.00.

Who Should Get the Bowery?

  • Folks looking for a value mattress
  • People who prefer a more responsive foam feel

Who Should Get the Nectar?

  • People who prefer a slow-moving memory foam feel
  • Light- and medium-weight back sleepers
