Avocado Mattress Firmness and Feel

Knowing the Avocado’s firmness and feel will help you determine whether it’s a good fit for your body type and sleeping position. Let’s take a closer look.

How Firm is the Avocado Mattress?

The Avocado feels like a 6.5/10 on our firmness scale, which is the industry standard for medium-firm mattresses.

However, it’s important to note that firmness is subjective. Lightweight people may think the Avocado Green mattress feels softer than heavier people, because they won’t compress the top layers very much.

Sleeping on the Avocado Mattress

In my experience, the Avocado felt great while back sleeping. My hips sank into the pillow top and I felt the next layers contouring to the shape of my body. With the additional pillow top, it is a good mattress for back sleepers.

A man sleeps on his back on the Avocado Green mattress

I felt comfy when I moved to my side because the pillow top relieved pressure on my shoulders and hips. If you’re a lightweight or average weight side sleeper, the Avocado should be a great match. Larger people, on the other hand, might compress the top layers and feel some pressure.

When I slept on my stomach, I didn’t get feel enough support. My hips sank out of alignment, which put strain on my lower back. If you’re a stomach sleeper, I recommend foregoing the pillow top.

What Does the Avocado Mattress Feel Like?

The Avocado has a bouncy latex that’s both responsive and plush. The pillow top helps alleviate pressure, while the latex offers excellent lumbar support.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lb – 230 lb

Average weight back sleepers should find the Avocado is a great match. The pillow top allows hips to sink in, and the comfort layers gently contour the body.

The Avocado Green mattress is also a good option for average weight side sleepers. With the addition of the plush pillow top, sleepers shouldn’t feel pain on their pressure points.

Stomach sleeping, average weight sleepers may find the Avocado Green mattress doesn’t provide enough support. Stomach sleepers will want a firmer mattress to prevent their hips from getting out of alignment.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lb

Heavyweight people will compress the top layers quite a bit and feel plenty of lumbar support. This makes the mattress a great choice for heavier back sleepers. In this sleeping position, heavyweight folks should feel their hips gently sinking into the mattress, but not too far. Those who weigh more than 300 lb, however, may need a more supportive bed, such as one of the best mattresses for heavy people.

Heavyweight side sleepers might feel a bit of pressure along their shoulders and hips, which could cause pain over time.

Heavier stomach sleepers will likely think the mattress feels a little too soft, which could cause the hips to sink out of alignment. This could lead to lower back pain, so we recommend looking for one of the best mattresses for stomach sleepers if you fall in this category.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lb

The Avocado mattress is a good fit for lightweight back and side sleepers who need a bit of body contouring and pressure relief. Lightweight stomach sleepers will likely find the Avocado mattress isn’t supportive enough to keep their body in alignment.

Avocado Mattress Construction

Avocado Mattress is known for its eco-friendly materials, but what exactly is inside each layer? Let’s take a closer look at the mattress’s construction.

Avocado Mattress Performance

How well does the Avocado Green mattress perform? We ran a number of tests to find out.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

One of the benefits of latex is that it is naturally cooling and breathable. The Avocado Green also contains a layer of moisture-wicking wool, which makes it one of the best cooling mattresses on the market

Motion Transfer

One of the drawbacks of latex is that it doesn’t isolate motion well. When I placed a glass of water on the Avocado mattress and pressed into the surrounding area, the water rippled in the glass. I also tested this with my colleague, and I could feel his movements come over to my side of the bed. For this reason, the Avocado Green isn’t the best mattress for couples.

Edge Support

While the motion transfer isn’t great on the Avocado, this supportive latex mattress has outstanding edge support. When I sat near the edge of the mattress, I felt super secure. Couples should be able to enjoy the full surface area of this mattress — no need to sleep squished toward the center!

Durability

The Avocado Green is made with long-lasting, durable materials. We expect it to last at least 10 years, which is about three years longer than the lifespan of a traditional bed-in-a-box mattress. All in all, the Avocado mattress is a great investment.

Off-Gassing

Off-gassing is another name for the chemical smell emitted by new mattresses. Unlike most bed-in-a-box brands, the Avocado doesn’t have an odor because it’s made entirely with non-toxic materials.

Noise

When testing the Avocado Green mattress, we did not notice any noise. Sleepers should find this is a very quiet mattress.

Sex

If finding a good mattress for sex is a top priority, the Avocado Green is a great option. This mattress is made with responsive latex and bouncy coils, which makes it easy for partners to move around on top of it.

Company Policies

Before purchasing a new mattress, it’s important to understand the company’s policies. Let’s take a look at the Avocado Green’s fine print.

Warranty Info

Avocado offers an impressive 25-year warranty. For the first 10 years, the warranty offers full coverage and isn’t prorated. Between years 11 and 25, the warranty offers limited coverage and is prorated.

Sleep Trial

Like the warranty, Avocado’s one-year sleep trial is longer than the industry standard.

Return Policy

It takes a few weeks to break in a new mattress. Because of this, Avocado asks its customers to sleep on their bed for at least 30 days before returning.

If you aren’t satisfied with your mattress during the one-year sleep trial period, you can return it and get a full refund.

How Does the Avocado Green Compare to Other Mattresses?

It’s always a good idea to compare brands before buying a new mattress. Let’s see how the Avocado compares to its competitors.

For even more side-by-side reviews, visit our mattress comparisons page.

Avocado vs Purple

Both mattresses feel firm and bouncy. However, if you want a particularly springy mattress, Avocado is the best choice. The Avocado Green mattress contains an 8″ layer of coils, which makes it easy for sleepers to move around on top of the bed.

The Purple mattress is slightly softer than the Avocado, making it a better fit for side sleepers.

Purple Mattress Construction

When it comes to construction, there are several notable differences between the two mattresses. The Avocado is made with organic and natural materials, while the Purple is made with the company’s proprietary gel grid. This hyperelastic material makes the Purple mattress feel both squishy and firm.

Who Should Get the Avocado Green?

  • Those who want a mattress made with organic and non-toxic materials
  • Those who prefer a springy and responsive mattress

Who Should Get the Purple?

  • Side sleepers
  • Those who want a mattress with a unique feel

Read our full Purple mattress review.

Avocado vs Casper

The original Casper is slightly firmer than the Avocado mattress. Still, they’re both good options for back and side sleepers. They’re slightly bouncy and have a soft comfort layer on top.

Casper Mattress - Construction And Foam Layers

The two mattresses differ in terms of construction. The Avocado has coils and memory foam, while the original Casper is an all-foam mattress. The Casper also has zoned support, which makes the center of the mattress feel firmer than the edges. If you want a completely organic mattress, opt for the Avocado because it’s made with all-natural materials.

The Avocado mattress is more durable and offers better edge support than the Casper. However, the Casper isolates motion better than the Avocado.

The Casper mattress is also more affordable than the Avocado, with a queen sized mattress coming in at $1295.00. With the additional pillow top, a queen sized Avocado mattress costs $1999.00.

Who Should Get the Avocado Green?

  • Those who want a mattress made with organic materials
  • People who want a mattress that will last a long time
  • Sleepers who want a mattress with great edge support

Who Should Get the Casper?

  • Those who want to save money
  • Couples who want a bed that doesn’t transfer motion easily
  • People who prefer all-foam mattresses
