Saatva Classic Mattress Video Review
Want to see how the Saatva mattress looks in action? Watch my in-depth video review! I’ll discuss the mattress’s construction, firmness, feel, and more.
Saatva Mattress Overview
The Saatva mattress comes from the Saatva company, a producer of other mattresses such as the Loom & Leaf and Zenhaven. While a luxury hybrid mattress, it’s mostly made up of coils and has a traditional innerspring feel, so I refer to it as an innerspring. It’s available in three firmnesses (Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm) and two heights (11.5″ and 14.5″).
We reviewed the Luxury Firm model with a height of 11.5″ and found it to be a high-quality innerspring mattress that should work for a wide variety of sleepers.
Pros of the Saatva Mattress
- Combination sleepers take note; the Saatva features a zoned construction which makes it feel firmer or softer depending on your sleeping position. If you flip and flop at night, you’ll be comfy in multiple positions.
- The Saatva is one of best mattresses for back sleepers. You’ve got firmness options with this mattress, but the Luxury Firm will be best for you back sleepers out there. You’ll feel your hips sink in just the right amount while the dual coils hold up your body.
- The Saatva contains high-quality materials such as high-grade coils, organic cotton, and high-density foams. It’s not the cheapest mattress on the market, but you get a long-lasting mattress when you buy the Saatva.
- It’s a good option if you want one of the best orthopedic mattresses. The Saatva’s plush foams and dual set of coils provide just the right amount of comfort and support to keep your spine in neutral alignment while also relieving pressure on your joints. Say goodbye to aches and pains.
- The wrong mattress can be a pain in the back, but not the Saatva. Its zoned construction helps support your spine and will prevent and ease back pain.
Cons of the Saatva Mattress
- Fans of super-soft mattresses should keep looking. Even the Plush Soft model is not as soft as some other online mattresses on the market. If you like things super plush, this won’t be the bed for you.
- Lightweight side sleepers will need a softer mattress. If you are on the lighter side, you won’t compress the top of the mattress enough. This could lead to some discomfort around your shoulders and hips.
- Do you love a memory foam feel where you slowly sink in? You’re not going to get that with the Saatva. It is bouncier and has a more traditional feel overall.

Saatva Mattress Firmness and Feel
Firmness and feel are two of the most important aspects of any mattress. Let’s see how firm the Saatva mattress is and what it should feel like for average weight, heavyweight, and lightweight sleepers.
How Firm Is the Saatva?
The Saatva mattress comes in three firmnesses: Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm. I reviewed the Luxury Firm version, and it felt close to a 7/10 in terms of firmness. The pillow top is soft, but the two layers of coils beneath are on the firmer side. Combined, they make the Saatva mattress feel firmer than average.
Choose Plush Soft If: | Choose Luxury Firm If: | Choose Firm If: |
You are a lightweight person or side sleeper who needs extra pressure relief | You are an average weight combination sleeper | You are a stomach sleeper |
Saatva Luxury Firm vs Firm
Though I’m focusing on the Saatva Luxury Firm mattress for this review, I have experience with the Firm version as well. The main difference? The Firm model is more supportive, coming in at 8/10 on our firmness scale.
On the Firm model, I felt very comfortable and supported while stomach sleeping. My hips didn’t sink into the pillow top, which helped me maintain the proper spinal alignment. The Firm model also offered plenty of support when I rested on my back. The Firm model did not offer enough pressure relief when I slept on my side, though. If this is your preferred sleeping position, opt for the Luxury Firm or Plush Soft model.
Sleeping on the Saatva Classic Mattress
When back sleeping on the Saatva mattress, I experienced an excellent balance of comfort and support. My hips sank into the pillow top the perfect amount, and I felt plenty of lumbar support from the coil layers. Because of this, it’s one of the best mattresses for lower back pain and sciatica.
When I rested on my side, the Saatva offered plenty of pressure relief along my shoulders and hips. If you’re primarily a side sleeper, you may prefer the Plush Soft model, because this option offers even more cushioning along pressure points.
I felt pretty comfortable when I rested on my stomach. My hips didn’t sink too far into the mattress, and I felt a good amount of overall support. That said, many stomach sleepers will prefer the support offered by the Firm model.
The Saatva is an organic mattress that is both comfortable and supportive. This mattress comes in multiple firmness options to fit a variety of sleepers.

What Does the Saatva Mattress Feel Like?
The Saatva has a classic innerspring feel. It’s bouncy and responsive, but the tufted pillow top offers some plush cushioning. When I rested on the mattress, I didn’t sink too far into the layers. I felt like I was sleeping “on top of” the mattress rather than “inside” it.
Sleeper Weight | Back Sleepers | Side Sleepers | Stomach Sleepers |
Lightweight (Under 130 lb) | Good | Fair | Excellent |
Average (130 – 230 lb) | Excellent | Fair | Good |
Heavyweight (Over 230 lb) | Fair | Fair | Bad |
Is the Saatva Mattress Good For Lightweight People (Under 130 lb)?
- The Saatva Luxury Firm mattress works well for lightweight back sleepers, because it has a supportive feel that promotes the proper spinal alignment.
- It isn’t the best choice for lightweight side sleepers, because it doesn’t offer a lot of pressure relief. People in this category may want to get the Plush Soft model instead.
- Lightweight stomach sleepers won’t compress the top layer of the mattress too much, so they should get plenty of lumbar support on the Saatva Luxury Firm.
Is the Saatva Mattress Good For Average Weight People (130 – 230 lb)?
- The Luxury Firm model is a great choice for average weight people. Its firm feel helps keep the spine in a neutral alignment.
- Side sleepers won’t get enough pressure relief on the Luxury Firm model, but the Plush Soft model could work well.
- The Saatva Luxury Firm mattress is a good option for back sleepers who weigh less than 200 lb. Heavier people may need a bit more hip support and should consider getting the Firm model.
Is the Saatva Mattress Good For Heavyweight People (Over 230 lb)?
- The Luxury Firm model isn’t supportive enough for heavyweight people, but the Firm model could be a good option.
- Heavyweight side sleepers may feel some pain and pressure along their shoulders and hips on this mattress.
- This mattress also isn’t great for heavyweight stomach sleepers. People in this category should consider getting one of the best mattresses for heavy people.
The Saatva is an organic mattress that is both comfortable and supportive. This mattress comes in multiple firmness options to fit a variety of sleepers.

Saatva Mattress Construction
Let’s take a look at what makes up the Saatva mattress. I will look at each layer, discuss what it is made of, and explain how this affects the overall feel and performance of the mattress.
Cover
The Saatva has a cover made from organic cotton, which is known for its breathable qualities. This means it will let air flow through the top of the mattress and help you sleep cooler during the night.
In addition, it is hypoallergenic and boasts a Guardin botanical antimicrobial treatment. This is meant to prevent the mattress from trapping allergens, dirt, mold and mildew.
Underneath the cover, the mattress features a thistle-pulp flame barrier. By law, all mattresses must have a flame barrier, but this is a natural alternative to fiberglass.
Comfort Layers
Quilted into the cover, you’ll find thick, comfy foam. This creates a Euro pillow top right on top of the mattress. Depending on what firmness you go with, this pillow top will be more or less plush. But, no matter what firmness you choose, I can say that the Saatva is one of the best pillow-top mattresses I’ve reviewed.
The Euro pillow top also features Lumbar Zone quilting. This means this layer is firmer toward the center of the mattress and will give you more support under your lumbar zone. Below that, there is a layer of high-density memory foam that also aids in pressure relief.
Support Layers
The Saatva features not one, but two sets of steel coils at the bottom of the mattress. First, it has a layer of Lumbar Zone pocketed coils. This layer of coils is meant to contour your body while giving you more support under your lumbar area. Like the quilted foam found toward the top of the mattress, the coils are firmer toward the center of the mattress.
Below the pocketed coils, there is a layer of 13-gauge tempered steel coils. These are extremely durable and are designed to support you while preventing sagging in the mattress.
Mattress Height
The Saatva mattress is available in two heights: 11.5″ and 14.5″. We reviewed the 11.5″ model.

Saatva Mattress Performance
Beyond firmness, feel, and construction, how does the Saatva mattress stack up? I tested the Saatva mattress for motion transfer, edge support, and cooling.
Sleeping Hot or Cold
The Saatva is an innerspring mattress with two layers of coils. This leaves a great deal of room for air to flow through the mattress. The top organic cotton cover is breathable and keeps the top of the mattress from trapping too much heat. I thought the Saatva was one of the best cooling mattresses and did not make us heat up at night.
Motion Transfer
When someone needs one of the best mattresses for couples, they are better off choosing a soft mattress with some sort of slow-moving memory foam on top. Innerspring, hybrid, and responsive foam mattresses can be too bouncy and won’t absorb the motion made by sleeping partners.
When I tested the Saatva mattress, we did notice a good deal of motion transfer. When I rested on one side of the mattress, I could feel my team member moving around on the other side.
Edge Support
Edge support is an important consideration for couples. If a mattress has poor edge support, each person will need to sleep closer to the center of the mattress.
Because it’s an innerspring mattress with two sets of coils, the Saatva has excellent edge support. I felt completely secure while sitting and lying down near the edge of the mattress.
Durability
The Saatva is a durable mattress. The two sets of coils are very strong, so I expect the Saatva to last at least ten years.
Off-gassing
Unlike other online mattresses, the Saatva does not come rolled up in a cardboard box. Because of this, the Saatva does not emit the chemical smell you may find in some of the best bed-in-a-box mattresses. You’ll be able to sleep on this bed immediately.
Saatva also offers free White Glove Delivery, which means delivery people will set up the new mattress for you and discard your old one.
Noise
Even though the Saatva mattress features coils, I did not hear any significant noise when I changed positions and moved around. That being said, after using the Saatva for several years, it is possible it could begin to squeak and creak.
Sex
The Saatva is a responsive mattress that doesn’t allow people to sink in too far. This should make it easy for sexual partners to move around and reposition. It’s one of the best mattresses for sex.
The Saatva HD is a supportive mattress made specifically for larger people.

Saatva Company Policies
Thinking about buying the Saatva mattress? First, let me guide you through the fine print of the company’s policies.
Warranty
Saatva offers a lifetime warranty on all its mattresses. This covers any defects in the construction of the mattress.
If you have any issues in the first two years of owning the mattress, Saatva will give you a brand-new mattress for free. After three years, you will pay $149 for the brand to fix your mattress.
However, you will void the warranty if you don’t pair the mattress with a properly supportive bed frame. Also, according to the brand, if you stain or burn the mattress, the warranty is also void.
Sleep Trial
The Saatva mattress comes with a 365-day sleep trial. This offer is above the industry average and should give you ample time to decide if the Saatva is the right fit for you.
Return Policy
If you aren’t completely satisfied with your Saatva mattress during the trial period, Saatva will refund or exchange your mattress for a $99 transportation fee. This fee covers the cost of labor and gas for the mattress pickup.
Common Saatva Mattress Complaints
Many customers have complained about Saatva’s $99 return fee, but Saatva makes it clear that this fee is part of their return policy.
Over time, some customers have experienced sagging in the Saatva mattress. An uneven mattress surface may cause back pain and sleep disruption. Fortunately, mattress sagging is a rare occurrence for average weight sleepers. If you are a heavyweight sleeper, the Saatva HD may be a better option for you.
I’ve also seen some minor complaints about the mattress feeling too firm. The Saatva is an innerspring mattress, and it does feel slightly firmer than an average innerspring. That said, it also comes in three firmness levels. If you decide your mattress feels too soft, you can return it and opt for a softer model (as long as it’s within the initial trial period).
How Does the Saatva Compare to Other Mattresses?
It is always a good idea to do some comparison shopping when looking for a new mattress. Let’s see how the Saatva compares to some of its major competitors.
Saatva vs Purple
Product
Firmness
Score
The Purple is one of the most popular mattresses on the market today. It features a hyper-elastic gel grid that is bouncy, durable, and extremely breathable. Its unique design is different than Saatva’s more traditional design.
In my experience, the Purple is softer than the Saatva Luxury Firm mattress. Lying down, there is more give with the Purple mattress. And while both mattresses are bouncy, they do feel different. Saatva has a responsive innerspring feel while Purple has more of a squishy gel-like feel.
The Purple’s gel grid makes it a more breathable mattress than the Saatva. The Purple is also sold at a lower price point.

Firm: 7.5/10Score
At first glance, the Saatva and DreamCloud are quite similar. They both feature coils and have plush layers on top. That said, they are still different in a few ways. The Saatva comes in three firmness levels and two heights, while the DreamCloud is only available in one firmness and height.
In my experience, the Saatva Luxury Firm mattress is firmer than the DreamCloud mattress. Also, the DreamCloud has more of that slow-moving memory foam feel on top, while the Saatva has more of that classic innerspring mattress feel.
