Brooklyn Bedding Spartan Mattress Firmness And Feel
To kick off the in-depth portion of this review, let’s take a look at the firmness and feel of the Spartan mattress. These factors will have a big impact on whether this mattress is a good fit for your sleep position(s) and other sleep preferences. So let’s get to it!
How Firm Is The Spartan?
We ranked the Medium model of the Spartan around a 5.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. The industry standard for average firmness is 6.5/10, so this suggests this model is notably softer than average. That’s thanks to its thick, soft comfort layer. (More on that in the “construction” section below.) Again, note that this assessment is just for one of this bed’s firmness options; the others will be slightly different.
Also note that firmness is slightly subjective. Depending on your body weight and personal preferences (and depending on the firmness option you choose), you might find that the Spartan feels a bit firmer or softer.

Sleeping On The Spartan
In our experience, the Medium model of the Spartan felt a bit too soft for back sleeping. Because this is a relatively soft mattress, we didn’t obtain quite enough spinal support. Our hips sank a bit too far into the bed, pulling our spine out of alignment.
We felt great while side sleeping on the Spartan. We sank into the thick comfort layer and experienced virtually no pressure on the shoulder and hip.
The Spartan is definitely too soft for stomach sleeping. Our hips bowed into the mattress, and our spine didn’t feel well supported. If you spend all night on your stomach, consider the Spartan Firm model or check out other mattresses for stomach sleepers for more supportive options.

What Does The Spartan Feel Like?
The Brooklyn Bedding Spartan has a balanced and responsive feel overall. Even though the thick comfort layer allows you to sink into the bed, the bouncy coils and responsive Energex foam mean you shouldn’t feel stuck. It’s not hard to move around on top of this mattress.
Average Weight Sleepers – 130lbs – 230lbs
Average-weight back and stomach sleepers probably won’t get enough support on the Soft or Medium versions of this mattress and will want to consider the Firm model. Average-weight side sleepers, however, should enjoy loads of pressure relief on the Soft or Medium model.
Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230lbs
Heavyweight back and stomach sleepers will probably want to look at the Firm model of the Spartan or a more supportive mattress for heavy people. Heavyweight side sleepers should enjoy nice, cushy pressure relief thanks to the thick comfort layers.
Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130lbs
Lightweight back sleepers should feel well-supported on the Firm model and might obtain enough support on one of the Spartan’s softer models. Lightweight side sleepers will definitely enjoy lots of pressure relief from the thick comfort layer. Lightweight stomach sleepers should obtain great spinal support on the Firm model but might not get enough support on the Soft or Medium model.

Cover
The Spartan’s cover utilizes Far Infrared Rays technology, which is meant to assist with muscle recovery. The idea is that this technology turns your body’s heatwaves into energy and then reflects that energy back into the body. The cover also features Phase Change Material to keep it sleeping cool.
Comfort Layers
The first comfort layer on the Spartan is made from 1.5” of patented CopperFlex foam, which offers responsive body contouring and pressure relief. The copper also offers antimicrobial properties. Beneath the CopperFlex foam, there’s a 2” layer of hyper-elastic TitanFlex foam, which is bouncy and durable. Finally, there’s a 1” layer of visco-elastic memory foam that offers additional body contouring.
Support Layers
The primary support layer on the Spartan is made from an 8” base of approximately 1,000 individually encased Ascension X coils. Beneath the coils, there’s a 1” layer of high-density base foam that offers overall structure and support.

Brooklyn Bedding Spartan Mattress Performance
Before you make up your mind about the Brooklyn Bedding Spartan, there are a few key factors left to consider. We put this mattress through a range of tests to assess its temperature regulation, motion isolation, edge support, and more. Let’s see how this bed performed!
Sleeping Hot Or Cold
The Spartan should keep you sleeping cool thanks to several design features: The cover stays cool to the touch, the foam layers are designed to dissipate heat, and the coils allow for plenty of airflow throughout the mattress. It should be a good cooling mattress.
Motion Transfer
Soft mattresses with thick comfort layers often do a good job of minimizing motion transfer, so we were surprised to see that the Spartan didn’t perform particularly well on this test. It’s possible that movements from a partner or pet could travel across the surface of the mattress. While the mattress didn’t perform terribly, it’s worth keeping this in mind if you’re hunting for a mattress for couples.
Edge Support
Because this is a soft mattress, it doesn’t offer very strong edge support. The edges collapsed under us a bit when we sat and laid down near the edges of the bed.
Durability
The Spartan is constructed with high-quality foams and sturdy coils, so this should be a long-lasting mattress and a good long-term investment.
Off-Gassing
The foams in the Spartan are CertiPUR-US certified, which means they’re more eco-friendly than conventional foams and limit the off-gassing of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). While you might notice a natural scent immediately after unboxing this mattress, that should dissipate within a few days.
Noise
At the time of our review, we didn’t observe any notable noise from the Spartan. That said, because this mattress incorporates coils, it’s possible they could start to squeak a bit over time.
Sex
The best mattress for sex makes it easy for partners to change positions. Even though the Spartan has a thick comfort layer, it’s responsive enough that partners shouldn’t feel stuck in this mattress. This could be a decent option for sex.
