How We Chose the Best Latex Mattresses
To put together this best mattress reviews list, our team of Certified Sleep Science Coaches spent time actually lying down on each mattress, performing hands-on testing, and evaluating the factors above to determine which would be the best fit for each ranking.
For example, we test the motion isolation of each mattress by placing a glass of water on it and pressing the layers around it. If the water moves a lot, we know that the mattress does not have great motion isolation.
We also test the edge support to see how much the bed collapses and look at a pressure map of the mattress to understand where there is built up pressure while laying on it. Rather than simply saying “this mattress is great” or “this mattress is terrible,” we recognize that this is a fairly subjective process. As a result, we simply try to point people in the right direction by categorizing each mattress and saying what type of sleeper might like it.

Our Expert’s Take on Why the Saatva Latex Hybrid is Best Overall
Stomach sleepers and heavyweight people looking for a mattress with more support should appreciate the Saatva Latex Hybrid. Its durable composition of Talalay latex and individually wrapped coils elevate the hips and properly align the spine. This mattress also has great edge support, responsiveness, and natural cooling properties.
What We Love About the Saatva Latex Hybrid
- It’s an eco-friendly mattress that contains organic cotton, organic wool and all-natural Talalay latex.
- It’s breathable, thanks to the cooling latex foam and airflow-promoting coils.
- It’s a supportive mattress that comes in at 7.5/10 on our firmness scale. This makes it ideal for stomach sleepers, because it helps them maintain the correct spinal alignment.
What to Keep in Mind About the Saatva Latex Hybrid
- Side sleepers may need a softer mattress in order to get the necessary pressure relief. We recommend the WinkBeds EcoCloud if you fall into this category.
- People with tight budgets may not be able to afford the Saatva Latex Hybrid. This bed features many high-quality (and pricey) materials, such as Talalay latex and organic wool.
Other Customer Reviews
On Saatva’s website, the Latex Hybrid mattress earns an average customer review score of 4.8/5. Many people said the supportive mattress helped alleviate back pain, and others noted that Saatva’s customer service team is top notch. I wasn’t able to access any negative reviews, but as I mentioned above, I wouldn’t recommend this mattress for strict side sleepers because it won’t offer enough pressure relief.

Our Expert’s Take
The WinkBeds EcoCloud is a hybrid mattress that incorporates thick Talalay latex and pocketed coils in its construction. The latex and coils are both zoned with different firmness levels in different areas, making this a great option for combo sleepers. People should feel particularly good support when they’re on their back and nice pressure relief when sleeping on their side.
What We Love About the WinkBeds EcoCloud
- The WinkBeds EcoCloud has great cooling features, such as breathable Talalay latex foam and coils that promote airflow.
- It works well for combination sleepers. Its zoned construction makes it feel firmer toward the center and softer near the head and foot, which helps back and side sleepers maintain the proper spinal alignment.
- It’s a great long-term investment because it’s made with durable materials like New Zealand wool, organic cotton and pocketed coils.
What To Keep In Mind About the WinkBeds EcoCloud
- Stomach sleepers won’t get the proper support. The WinkBeds EcoCloud has a medium-firm feel, and stomach sleepers will likely feel their hips sinking out of alignment, which can lead to back pain.
- It has a slow-moving feel. The WinkBeds EcoCloud mattress has bouncy coils in its support layer and responsive latex in its comfort layer. If you prefer a slow-moving feel, we recommend looking for one of the best memory foam mattresses.
- It’s not a particularly affordable mattress. The WinkBeds EcoCloud mattress is made with high-quality and durable materials, which gives it a higher price tag.
Other Customer Reviews
On the WinkBeds EcoCloud website, the mattress earns a customer review score of 4.8/5. Many back and side sleepers noted that they get the necessary comfort and support on this bed, and hot sleepers said the materials helped them stay cool at night. There aren’t many negative reviews online, but some customers said the mattress felt too firm for their preferences.

Our Expert’s Take
The Nolah Natural is one of the most supportive latex mattresses on the market, and it’s an exceptional choice for back sleepers. This mattress contains Nolah’s HDMax TriZone support coil system, which helps sleepers maintain the correct spinal alignment all night long. This bed should really help those who suffer from back pain. The strong coil system, combined with its wool and latex comfort layers, gives this mattress a great balance of comfort and support.
What We Love About The Nolah Natural
- It contains eco-friendly materials, such as organic cotton, organic wool and Talalay latex
- It’s great for back sleepers because it offers both comfort and support.
- Side sleepers will also enjoy this mattress because it has plush comfort layers that help alleviate pain along pressure points.
What To Keep In Mind About the Nolah Natural
- Because it’s on the softer side, 6/10 on our firmness scale, the Nolah Natural isn’t supportive enough for stomach sleepers. In this sleeping position, you could feel your hips sink out of alignment, which can lead to lower back pain.
- It doesn’t isolate motion well, which could annoy couples. When one person shifts sleeping positions during the night, it’s likely the other person will feel that movement on their side of the bed.
Other Customer Reviews
On Nolah’s website, the Nolah Natural earns an average customer review score of 4.7/5. Many side sleepers said they got the pressure relief they needed, and many other people praised the mattress’s cooling materials. I didn’t see any negative reviews posted on their website, but as I mentioned above, I wouldn’t recommend this bed for stomach sleepers.

Our Expert’s Take
Like other Plank mattresses, the Firm Natural provides two different firmnesses through its flippable design. The two firmnesses included with the Plank Firm Natural are medium-firm and firm, so the mattress will accommodate a wide range of sleepers. In addition to this great feature, the mattress utilizes eco-friendly materials, including latex, that not only provide quality, but also check the environmentally sustainable box.
What We Love About the Plank Firm Natural
- The flippable design of the Plank Firm Natural accommodates all kinds of sleepers. One side is medium-firm, which should work well for average-weight people, and the other side is firm, which should work well for heavyweight people and stomach sleepers.
- The Plank Firm Natural’s construction uses several eco-friendly materials, such as organic cotton, Talalay latex, and organic wool. Not only are these materials high quality, they’re also responsibly sourced, so you can feel good about your purchase.
What to Keep in Mind About the Plank Firm Natural
- While the Plank Firm Natural provides two different firmnesses to accommodate a wide range of sleepers, there will likely still be some who don’t find that it suits their needs. The softer side of the mattress is technically medium-firm, which may be too firm for some side sleepers and lightweight people.
- This mattress is quite expensive, which is typical of latex products. If you have your heart set on a latex mattress but don’t want to spend too much, consider the Dreamfoam mattress.
Other Customer Reviews
The Plank Firm Natural has an average rating of 4.1 out of 5, based on 30 customer reviews on the company website. Most reviewers praise the quality of the mattress, but two unhappy users claim that the mattress is not nearly as firm as advertised.

Our Expert’s Take
Natural beds are on the rise, but are you looking for a completely organic mattress in all aspects? The PlushBeds Botanical Bliss mattress is just that. It contains several different natural materials, which is why we named it the best organic latex mattress. The cover is made from certified organic cotton, and right underneath that you’ll find certified organic New Zealand wool. The comfort layer feels bouncy, breathable and durable, and we even find Dunlop latex in the two main support layers. These add to the edge support and make back sleepers feel secure.
What We Love About the PlushBeds Botanical Bliss
- It’s available in two firmness options. The Medium option is great for side sleepers and lightweight people, while the Medium-Firm option works best for back sleepers and lightweight stomach sleepers.
- It contains durable materials, such as natural latex, that should give it at least a 10-year lifespan.
- The comfort layers feel cool and breathable, making it a great option for hot sleepers.
What to Keep in Mind About the PlushBeds Botanical Bliss
- Because it contains high-quality materials, this mattress has a higher price point. If you’re on a tight budget, I recommend the Brooklyn Bedding EcoSleep.
- The mattress doesn’t isolate motion well because it has a bouncy and responsive feel. This could be a problem for couples who are concerned about waking up when their partner shifts sleeping positions during the night.
Other Customer Reviews
According to the PlushBeds website, the Botanical Bliss mattress has garnered over 4,000 positive customer reviews. Many customers praised its responsive feel and lumbar support. It’s important to note that PlushBeds only featured a handful of five-star reviews, so I don’t have a clear picture as to what any complaints are.

Our Expert’s Take
Looking for a latex bed-in-a-box mattress that won’t break the bank? If so, the Dreamfoam Latex may be the perfect option. This mattress comes in three firmness levels and two height options, so there’s something for just about everyone.
What We Love About the Dreamfoam Latex Mattress
- It is great for hot sleepers, because it contains cooling latex foam and the Ascension Coils help promote airflow.
- Side sleepers should get plenty of pressure relief from the latex foam and lots of lumbar support from the coils.
- It’s available in three firmness levels. The Soft model is great for side sleepers, while the Medium option works for both side and back sleepers. If you’re a stomach sleeper, you should opt for the Firm model.
What to Keep in Mind About the Dreamfoam Latex Mattress
- The Talalay latex feels responsive, so if you like a slow-moving feel, you should look elsewhere.
- The Dreamfoam Latex mattress doesn’t isolate motion well. If you share a bed with a partner, you’ll likely feel their movements come over to your side of the bed.
- Even the firmest model isn’t supportive enough for heavyweight stomach sleepers. If you fall in this category, we recommend getting the Awara Natural Hybrid instead.
Other Customer Reviews
According to the Dreamfoam Latex website, customers rated this mattress a 4.4/5. Many people said they felt comfortable and supported on this bed, but some customers returned the bed because it didn’t offer enough pressure relief.

Our Expert’s Take
The Brooklyn Bedding EcoSleep mattress is a great choice for any sleepers looking for extra support. This latex hybrid bed is reinforced with support latex, 6″ of Ascension coils, and an even firmer natural latex. The reason there’s more latex under the coils is that this mattress is also flippable.
What We Love About The Brooklyn Bedding EcoSleep
- It’s a very durable mattress that should last at least 10 years. The latex comfort layers shouldn’t sag as the years go on, and the coils will help prevent people from “bottoming out” on the bed.
- It’s great for back and stomach sleepers. I recommend the softer side for back sleepers, because this offers the optimal amount of comfort and support. Stomach sleepers will prefer the firm side, because it will help promote the proper spinal alignment.
- The mattress is great for hot sleepers, thanks to the breathable latex foam and supportive coils.
What to Keep in Mind About the Brooklyn Bedding EcoSleep
- Because its a firm mattress, it’s not great for side sleepers. Even the softer side of the mattress feels like a 8/10 on our firmness scale, so side sleepers won’t get the pressure relief they need.
- It’s not a good match for people who prefer medium-firm mattresses. If you’re looking for something with a classic feel, consider the WinkBeds EcoCloud.
- Like most latex mattresses, the Brooklyn Bedding EcoCloud lacks a slow-moving feel. You won’t feel much body contouring on this bed.
Other Customer Reviews
On Brooklyn Bedding EcoSleep‘s website, customers give the mattress very high ratings. Most reviewers gave the bed five stars, praising its supportive feel and eco-friendly construction. However, some people noted that the mattress felt too firm for them.

Our Expert’s Take
Helix has had great success with its extensive lines of hybrid mattresses. Now, they’ve thrown their hat into the latex ring. The Birch Natural features Talalay latex, organic wool and individually wrapped coils. Customers also have the option of adding a pillow top, which could be a good fit for those who deal with lower back pain and sciatica.
Why We Love the Birch Natural Mattress
- Back and stomach sleepers should get the lumbar support they need. The Birch feels firmer than average, coming in at 7/10 on our firmness scale. This is ideal for people who rest on their backs and stomachs because it helps promote the proper spinal alignment.
- It’s supportive enough for people who weigh more than 230 lb. Thanks to its durable latex comfort foam, heavier people shouldn’t “bottom out” on this mattress.
- It contains high-quality, eco-friendly materials such as organic wool, organic cotton and natural latex.
What to Keep in Mind About the Birch Natural Mattress
- Side sleepers will want to purchase the Birch topper as well. Without it, side sleepers could develop some pain along their shoulders and hips.
- Fans of soft, plush mattresses should look elsewhere. The Birch Natural mattress has a firm and supportive feel.
Other Customer Reviews
On the Birch Natural website, the average customer review is 4.6/5. Many people said they got better sleep on this mattress from the very beginning, and others praised its cooling features. Some side sleepers said that this mattress exacerbated their joint pain because the bed felt too firm.

Our Expert’s Take
The Awara Natural Hybrid is a high-quality, eco-friendly latex bed. This year, it’s our favorite firm latex mattress. The Awara is made with Dunlop latex, which is sourced from real rubber trees and is firmer than Talalay latex, which is typically factory-made. This bed boasts other luxury materials, including a cotton cover tufted with wool and 8” of pocketed coils. These natural materials have the added perk of being cooling, so hot sleepers should enjoy these beds as well.
What We Love About the Awara Natural Hybrid
- It’s a great cooling mattress because it contains breathable latex and coils that promote airflow.
- It’s very supportive, coming in at 7.5/10 on our firmness scale. This makes it a great choice for heavyweight people, stomach sleepers and most back sleepers.
- It’s a durable mattress that should last at least a decade. The comfort layers are high-quality and the coils are strong.
What to Keep in Mind About the Awara Natural Hybrid
- Lightweight people will likely think this mattress feels too firm, because they won’t compress the comfort layers too much.
- This mattress contains responsive latex foam and bouncy coils. If you want a slow-moving mattress, you should consider a memory foam bed.
- Most side sleepers won’t get the pressure relief they need, because the Awara feels much firmer than average.
Other Customer Reviews
On the Awara Natural Hybrid website, the average customer rating score is 4.5/5. People love the luxurious feel and supportive latex foam, but some side sleepers returned their mattress because it felt too firm.

Our Expert’s Take
The Avocado is a hybrid mattress constructed with thick layers of natural Dunlop latex and pocketed support coils. Consumers also have the option of adding a pillow-top to the bed which creates a fluffy comfortable feel and added pressure relief. With the pillow-top, the Avocado is my favorite latex mattress for side-sleeping. Natural Dunlop latex isn’t always the best with pressure relief, but the pillow-top does an excellent job of relieving pressure on the shoulders and hips.
What We Love About the Avocado Green Mattress
- If you’re looking for a bed that sleeps cool, the Avocado Green is a great option. From its naturally cooling latex to the layer of wool that helps wick moisture, this bed is full of temperature-regulating features.
- The Avocado Green is an organic mattress, so anyone who needs their bed to check that box will appreciate Avocado’s commitment to high-quality, sustainable materials.
What to Keep in Mind About the Avocado Green Mattress
- The Avocado Green doesn’t isolate motion very well. This could be an issue for couples who sleep together and want a bed that won’t transfer movement as much.
- This bed comes with a pretty high price tag. It’s not the best fit if you’re working with a tight budget.
Other Customer Reviews
According to the Avocado website, customers rated this mattress a 4.6/5. Many customers say the bed is comfortable and customer service was helpful. Some users noted, though, that the bed felt too firm for their preference.

Are Latex Mattresses Good for Heavier Sleepers?
Marten is our Lead Reviewer who has participated in all of our latex mattress reviews. He weighs about 230 lbs and is 6’7″ tall. Here’s what he thought about these mattresses:
8 Benefits of Latex Mattresses
There are plenty of reasons why latex mattresses are becoming more and more popular, and there have been numerous new brands that have entered the market recently. This type of mattress can offer a lot of different, wide-ranging benefits:
- Durability: Natural latex mattresses will typically last longer than memory foam or poly foam because of the density of the foams used in the construction. Latex foam mattresses shouldn’t sag the way many foam mattresses are wont to do, so if you’re viewing your purchase as a long-term investment, then this could be a huge benefit. Make sure to read up on our top picks for the best mattresses that won’t sag.
- Bounce: This is more of a personal preference, but latex mattresses are known for having great bounce overall, making them potentially good for sex. Simply put, it’s easier to move around in the bed and/or switch sleeping positions.
- Elasticity: Latex can be compressed in one spot without affecting neighboring areas. This allows it to cradle the body, providing support and relieving stress on pressure points.
- Not feeling stuck: Memory foam owners often complain about the feeling of getting stuck in their mattresses, but this isn’t the case with latex foam. The surface is very responsive and you won’t slowly sink into it. At the same time, you still get a good amount of pressure relief.
- Hypoallergenic: Latex resists mildew, mold, and dust mites, which are all allergens. Its open-cell structure allows air to flow through. This also keeps sleepers dry. As long as people opt for natural latex, they can also have peace of mind that it probably hasn’t been heated with harsh chemicals.
- Natural: Natural latex foam is the only way for a mattress to be considered “Green.” Some companies may claim that their mattress is eco-friendly, but unless they use natural latex, that’s not going to be the case. If people want a real green mattress with natural materials, latex is the way to go.
- Sustainability: Latex is derived from rubber trees, which can yield as long as 30 years. The trees don’t need herbicides or pesticides to thrive, and the bark heals quickly after the serum is harvested. When trees are spent, the land can be replanted immediately, and natural latex will eventually biodegrade.
- Good for hot sleepers: If you overheat at night, a latex mattress could be a good option. The material is naturally breathable and helps dissipate heat. While materials like memory foam are known to trap heat, this shouldn’t be an issue with a latex mattress.
3 Drawbacks to Latex Mattresses
If anyone has seen any of our latex mattress reviews, they’ll know that latex is not for everyone. Here are a few drawbacks to consider:
- Weight: Natural latex mattresses are very dense and thus very heavy and difficult to move around. Consumers will need at least two people to transport the mattresses successfully. This isn’t that big of a deal once people get their mattresses set up, but if you think you’ll ever have to move it from one home to another, then it’s something to consider.
- Higher cost: Natural latex is very difficult and costly to source. As a result, these mattresses tend to cost quite a bit. You have to be willing to pay a lot of money. These beds will last a long time, so the value is there, but they may not be in everyone’s budget.
- The feel isn’t for everyone. Some people may not like the bouncy nature of latex. Make sure you understand the type of feel that you like before jumping in and making a purchase.
Latex vs. Memory Foam Mattresses
- Latex mattresses will typically be more breathable. The foam is more open-celled and not as prone to trapping heat as memory foam.
- Latex mattresses, on the whole, should be more durable than most memory foam mattresses because of the overall density of latex foams.
- Latex will have more bounce and a sleeping on-top-of-the-mattress feeling, while the memory foam will have a slow, sinking-in feeling that resembles quicksand. Once again, this all comes down to taste, so one is not necessarily better than the other in this regard.
- Memory foam will have better motion isolation, potentially making it the best mattress for couples.
- Memory foam will have a bit better pressure relief in most (but not all) cases.
- Latex will be a more green option than memory foam in almost all instances.
Latex vs. Innerspring Mattresses
- Both mattress types will be breathable and should sleep cool throughout the night.
- Both mattresses will have some good bounce.
- Latex beds will offer a more “green” option, as even the best innerspring mattresses usually come with a poly foam pillow-top (made from petrochemicals).
- A latex mattress typically should be more durable than the average spring mattress because of the density of the foams used in the construction.
Latex Allergies
A lot of readers have asked if latex mattresses will be a problem for people with a latex allergy, but there’s no truth to that rumor. All credible studies show that people will not have a reaction to latex in their bedding. That’s because the latex goes through a washing process that removes any proteins from the material that could potentially cause a reaction.
What to Look for in a Latex Mattress
When people look at a latex mattress, they’ll be exposed to an entirely new terminology compared to other types of mattresses. Key decisions will be natural vs synthetic/blend, Dunlop vs Talalay processing, unique mattress warranty considerations, and density/ILD.
Natural vs. Synthetic Latex
The latex in a mattress can be all-natural latex, synthetic latex, or a blend of natural and synthetic. Natural latex (from rubber trees) and synthetic latex (made through a chemical process) feel quite similar, though in general, natural latex mattresses are preferred.
Natural latex support cores breathe and pull moisture away from the body. This keeps sleepers cooler in the summer, warmer in the winter, and more comfortable year-round. This form of latex is inherently anti-microbial, hyper-allergenic, and dust-mite-resistant.
Generally, the decision here comes down to how pricey each type of blend is. People prefer the feel and eco-friendliness of natural latex, but even the most reasonably priced all-natural mattresses start at around $2,000. If you can afford it, go natural, but otherwise, synthetic/blend will offer a pretty similar sleeping experience.
Dunlop vs. Talalay
Dunlop and Talalay are two different types of latex processing. Even though both come from a rubber tree, the two types of processing result in different feelings. Dunlop processing leads to a firmer feel and Talalay processing leads to a softer feel.
One type of latex support core is not necessarily better than the other. Dunlop is denser while Talalay tends to attract those looking for a pillow-soft surface. Dunlop is typically heavier and more durable, but Talalay has a wider variety of ILD ratings.
I will say, it’s true that Talalay produces a more consistent latex. I recommend that you think about the feel of the mattress rather than the processing method to make your final decision because the differences aren’t very noticeable.
Latex Mattress Warranty
People will want to look at the warranty carefully (as with any mattress), but the thing to be concerned about with latex is the standard for compression/body impressions. This is the most likely issue that will come up with a latex mattress, so people should just be aware of the terms and how they expect the mattress to behave over time.
Learn more about mattress warranties.
Latex Density and ILD
With latex mattresses, people will commonly hear two measures of the foam: the density (a measure of weight given volume) and ILD (a measure of firmness).
The mattress density will be communicated in pounds (lbs) and is a measure of weight per square foot. To generalize, the higher the density, in most instances, the higher the durability of the foam.
The ILD (Indentation Load Deflection) is a measure of firmness, ranging generally from 14–44, meaning the higher the number, the firmer the mattress will be. ILD describes how easily the material will conform to one’s body. So, if someone likes to sink into the bed upon contact, choose a lower rating. A rating of 14 would mean it’s extremely soft while 44 would be super-firm. However, most ratings fall between 19 and 37.

Best Latex Mattress FAQs
What are the benefits of latex mattresses?
Latex mattresses tend to be more durable than other mattress types. They’re also very breathable, making them ideal for hot sleepers. Additionally, they’re very responsive, making it easy to move around the mattress and switch positions.
Which are better, memory foam or latex mattresses?
This really depends on one’s personal preferences. Memory foam mattresses are probably for pressure relief and body contouring. Latex mattresses are more durable and breathable, and they can support more weight, too.
How long does a latex mattress last?
A latex mattress should last a long time, potentially more than 10 years if it’s all-latex. Latex mattresses are very durable overall.
Why are latex mattresses so expensive?
Natural latex is very difficult to source and it doesn’t come from the United States. Because of this, the mattresses are going to have to cost more.
Do latex mattresses sleep hot?
Latex mattresses have very open-celled foam and are quite breathable. As a result, sleepers should not sleep hot.
What kind of foundation do you need for a latex mattress?
While many latex mattresses don’t need it, a good foundation is going to give you proper center support and keep you elevated above the floor. Wooden slats and even plywood (such as the kind found in a platform bed) work perfectly well, although if you opt for slats, make sure each one is no more than 8″ apart. Ideally, the slats will be no more than 3″ apart. Regardless of which foundation you choose, make sure that it’s supportive and doesn’t sag.
Are latex mattresses good for a bad back?
While it will likely vary from person to person, latex mattresses tend to be good options for sleepers with back pain due to the firmness and responsiveness of the material. Many latex beds are bouncy and medium-firm, thus providing spinal support and promoting neutral spinal alignment.
Do latex mattresses off-gas?
Off-gassing refers to the faint chemical smell emitted by many bed-in-a-box mattresses when you open them. The odor is harmless and usually goes away after you place the mattress in a well-ventilated room for 48 hours or so. If a mattress is 100 percent natural latex, it will not release any off-gassing smells. However, if it contains synthetic latex or certain other synthetic materials, there’s a chance you might detect some off-gassing.
