Saatva Youth Mattress Firmness And Feel

Let’s get to know the Saatva Youth mattress better by taking a look at the firmness and feel on both sides of this flippable bed!

How Firm Is The Saatva Youth?

We ranked both sides of this mattress around 6.5/10 on the firmness scale. The industry standard for average firmness is 6.5/10, so this suggests both sides of the mattress are right around medium-firm. We found the side for 8-to-12-year-olds to be just ever-so-slightly firmer than the side for 3-to-7-year-olds. Both sides layer a supportive comfort layer over a sturdy support layer made from coils.

Firmness is always a bit subjective, so a child might rank one or both sides of this mattress slightly different. But it’s unlikely anyone will find this mattress to be extremely firm or extremely soft.

Sleeping On The Saatva Youth

Both sides of the Saatva Youth mattress should work for kids who spend a lot of time back sleeping. It’s a fairly supportive mattress that should promote proper spinal alignment. The side for 8-to-12-year-olds is a bit more supportive to account for the fact that kids in this age group will almost certainly weigh more than kids between the ages of 3 and 7.

Both sides of the Saatva Youth should also be well suited to side sleepers. The side for 3-to-7-year-olds is a touch more pressure relieving, so it should offer plenty of comfort for their growing bodies.

Finally, both sides of the Saatva Youth mattress should also be a decent match for stomach sleepers. There’s zoning on the side for 3-to-7-year-olds, which will offer additional hip support. This helps ensure that the hips stay aligned with the spine.

What Does The Saatva Youth Feel Like?

The Saatva Youth mattress has a bouncy, innerspring feel. Sleepers will feel like they’re lying on top of the mattress (as opposed to sinking into it). It should be easy for sleepers to move around and change positions on both sides of this mattress.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130lbs – 230lbs

Because the Saatva Youth mattress is explicitly designed for kids under the age of 13, it’s unlikely to be a match for anyone weighing closer to 230 pounds. That said, older and/or larger kids who weigh closer to 130 pounds should obtain enough support and comfort on this mattress in all three sleep positions.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230lbs

In general, the Saatva Youth is not a good match for heavier sleepers. Because it’s designed for kids, it’s unlikely to offer enough support for people who weigh more than 230 pounds.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130lbs

This category is where the Saatva Youth really shines. It should be a great match for lightweight sleepers of all stripes. Lightweight back, side, and stomach sleepers should enjoy a balance of comfort and support in all positions. The side for 8-to-12-year-olds is a bit more supportive.

Saatva Youth Mattress Construction

Let’s peel back the cover on the Saatva Youth mattress and take a peek at what’s inside! We’ll detail each layer of this bed’s construction and explore how different materials and design elements affect performance and feel.

Cover

Both sides of the Saatva Youth feature an organic cotton cover. This material is fairly breathable and soft to the touch. It’s also treated with a water-resistant finish to help protect against accidents or spills.

Comfort Layers

The primary comfort layer on the 3-to-7-year-old side consists of a 5-zone support layer. It’s designed to be a bit firmer near the center of the mattress to provide extra spinal support. It’s a bit softer near the head and foot for added pressure relief.

The comfort layer on the 8-to-12 side is made from high-density comfort foam. This material offers some pressure relief as well as ample support. It’s also designed to be more breathable than many foams.

Support Layer

In the middle of the Saatva Youth mattress, there’s a dual-sided coil unit made with 13.75-gauge recycled steel coils. These coils serve as the support layer for both sides of the mattress. They simultaneously conform to the sleeper’s body a bit and offer nice spinal support. The coils are designed to offer additional lumbar support for the 8-to-12-year-olds side.

Mattress Height

The Saatva Youth mattress is 10” tall.

Saatva Youth Mattress Performance

We tested out the Saatva Youth mattress with regards to a variety of performance indicators, including temperature regulation, edge support, motion transfer, and more.

Sleeping Hot Or Cold

The Saatva Youth mattress should do a good job of sleeping cool. Its cover is breathable, and its coils allow for plenty of airflow to circulate throughout the center of the mattress. Check out our best cooling mattresses for more options.

Motion Transfer

Based on our tests, this mattress does not perform the best when it comes to minimizing motion transfer. It doesn’t do a particularly great job of absorbing movement and limiting disturbance across the surface of the mattress. This probably isn’t an issue in this case, though. Since kids are unlikely to share their bed with a sleep partner, they don’t really need to worry about motion transfer.

Edge Support

We found the edge support on the Saatva Youth to be very good. Kids should feel secure while sitting and lying down near the edges of this bed, which will allow them to utilize the full surface of the mattress.

Durability

For a flippable, kid-friendly bed, the Saatva Youth mattress should be fairly durable. It’s made with sturdy coils and high-density foams, which often withstand the test of time.

Off-Gassing

We didn’t observe any notable off-gassing when this bed arrived. Unlike many online mattresses, the Saatva Youth comes fully expanded instead of compressed in a box.

Noise

At the time of our review, we didn’t observe any noise from the Saatva Youth bed. Because it contains coils, it’s possible they could start to squeak a bit over time.

Company Info

If you choose to purchase the Saatva Youth mattress, acquaint yourself with the Saatva company’s policies. Here’s a quick overview.

Warranty Info

The Saatva Youth mattress comes with a lifetime warranty, which is longer than many mattresses for kids.

Sleep Trial

The Saatva Youth mattress comes with a 365-night sleep trial. This means kids will be able to test out the mattress for nearly half a year before deciding whether they want to keep it even longer.

Return Policy

If you or your child are not fully satisfied with the Saatva Youth mattress, you can return the mattress for a refund at any point during the 365-night trial. Note that the Saatva brand charges a $99 fee to cover the cost of labor and gas involved in the mattress pickup. The returned mattress will be donated to a veterans’ shelter or offered to a Saatva employee or associate.

How Does The Saatva Youth Compare To Other Mattresses?

It’s always a good idea to comparison shop before making a new mattress purchase. That way, you can feel confident that you’ve chosen the best mattress for your needs. We’ve done some of the leg work for you by pitting the Saatva Youth mattress against one of its main competitors in the kid mattress space: the Purple Kid.

Saatva Youth Vs. Purple Kid Mattress

The Saatva Youth and Purple Kid have very different constructions. For starters, the Saatva Youth is a flippable mattress, while the Purple Kid is not. Additionally, their comfort layers are very different: The Saatva Youth uses foam in its comfort layers, while the Purple Kid uses the Purple brand’s proprietary gel grid. This grid has a unique feel and sleeps very cool.

In terms of firmness, we ranked both sides of the Saatva around 6.5/10, with the side for younger kids being just a touch softer and the side for older kids being a bit firmer. We also ranked the Purple Kid around 6.5/10, right between the two sides of the Saatva.

A more notable difference between these two mattresses comes down to price. A Twin-size Saatva Youth mattress costs $795.00 at full price, while the same size Purple Kid costs less at $699.00 at full price.

Who Should Choose The Saatva Youth?

  • Parents who want a flippable mattress for their growing kids
  • Kids who want a traditional innerspring mattress (and parents who want that for their children)

Who Should Choose The Purple Kid?

  • Kids who sleep hot and need a cooling mattress
  • Parents who want to spend less
