But if you’re not ready to make the switch to a new mattress, Bear makes a mattress topper that can give your current mattress a little extra oomph. This review focuses on the Bear Pro mattress topper. Here’s my quick overview of the topper to help you figure out if it’s the topper for you or not:

Who Should Get the Bear Pro Mattress Topper?Who Shouldn’t Get the Bear Pro Mattress Topper?
People wanting to add a memory foam feel to their bedStomach sleepers
Hot sleepersFans of down featherbeds
People wanting to significantly soften a firm mattressShoppers looking for a cheap topper

Bear Pro Mattress Topper Firmness & Feel

Because mattress toppers come in all types of materials, they’ll have different firmnesses and feels. Let’s cover these two important factors for the Bear Pro mattress topper.

What’s the Bear Pro Mattress Topper’s Firmness?

The Bear Pro topper is a thick memory foam topper. In my testing, this topper felt very soft and had a lot of give. If you have a firm mattress in need of softening, this topper will certainly do the trick. A popular firm mattress we’ve tested here at Mattress Clarity is the Emma Hybrid Comfort, which we rated a 7.5/10. I tested the Bear Pro topper on top of the Emma Hybrid Comfort and found that it made it about two points softer, somewhere between a 5.5 and a 6 on the firmness scale. So if you have a firm bed, you can count on this topper to soften it significantly.

What does the Bear Pro Mattress Topper Feel Like?

The Bear Pro topper, though made of memory foam, has more of a responsive foam feel. In my testing, though the foam took about a second to spring back into place, it still felt really easy to move around on. I didn’t feel trapped “in” it like some other memory foam toppers out there.

Sleeping on the Bear Pro Mattress Topper

When I first test mattress toppers, before I take a nap on them, I always test how they feel in each of the three sleeping positions.

Getting on top of the Bear Pro topper was easy, as the foam did give way to my weight, but it was really easy to move around on. The foam springs back a bit quicker than most memory foam toppers. Once on the bed, I started on my back. I felt really comfortable here.

My hips sank into the topper just enough, and I didn’t feel like I was going to bottom out of the topper. But I’m a side sleeper by nature, so I shifted over to my side. Thanks to the 3” of foam, I felt really good pressure relief along my hips and my shoulders.

Finally, moving over to my stomach, I did feel comfortable as well. But I think this would really only work well for short naps. I felt my general lower back and hip area feel a little bit lower than the rest of my body. This told me that if I were to sleep exclusively on my stomach with this topper every night, I’d run the risk of developing some lower back pain due to the strain on that area. Overall, we recommend stomach sleepers stick with a firm bed—it will keep their hips from dipping below their shoulders, which can cause back pain over time.

30-60 Min Nap

With my initial testing out of the way, it came time to actually nap on the Bear Pro topper. I prefer memory foam that offers really good cushioning and contouring while still being really easy to move around on. I tend to toss and turn, so the Bear Pro would be exactly what I’d be looking for in a topper.

I slept exclusively on my side, and as I said before, I felt little to no pressure relief in my shoulders and my hips. I’m a textbook hot sleeper though, so I’m always paying close attention to how hot or cool I feel while I sleep.

A man wearing a blue t-shirt sleeps on his side while on top of the Bear Pro mattress topper.

I’m always the hottest when I first climb into bed, so I always have to wait a bit and see if that changes. The foam core of this topper isn’t ventilated, but the outer cover is designed for cooling and I’m happy to say that I didn’t really notice any hot spots developing.

And because I’m a side sleeper who switches sides while I sleep, by the time I was ready to move to the other side of the bed, the cover had become cool. So, if you’re a hot sleeper like me, I don’t think you should have to worry too much about overheating.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lb – 230 lb

Average weight back and side sleepers should find really good comfort, pressure relief and body contouring on this topper. This is due to the really soft feel of the topper and its ability to mold to the shape of your body. Average weight stomach sleepers might be able to enjoy sleeping on this topper, but I’d be worried about their spines dipping too far into the topper, so I’d say keep the bed firm or get a topper that isn’t as soft as this one.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lb

Heavyweight back and side sleepers should also feel comfort and support on this topper. I’d be worried about people over 300 lb potentially bottoming out of the topper if they’re exclusive side sleepers. However, I am an exclusive side sleeper and am a heavy guy myself. I didn’t bottom out of the topper. But it is something to keep in mind. I don’t recommend this to heavyweight stomach sleepers. I think that the foam is too soft to offer enough support for this weight range, which will cause spines and hips to dip too low and out of a proper alignment.

Lightweight Sleepers – Less than 130 lb

Just like average weight and heavyweight sleepers, lightweight back and side sleepers should find good comfort and support and additional softening with the Bear Pro topper. I do think that some lightweight sleepers may be able to sleep on this topper without too much issue, but because this topper is on the softer end, it still wouldn’t be my first recommendation to stomach sleepers out there.

Bear Pro Mattress Topper Construction

Let’s break the Bear Pro topper down by each of its components and talk about the high-quality materials used to make it.

Cover

The Bear Pro mattress topper comes with a cover. This cover is made with polyester cotton blend. These two materials work together to add some cooling and breathability properties to the topper. The polyester is mostly in the top portion, and it stays relatively cool to the touch.

The cover also features something called Celliant, which is a common material found in Bear products. This is woven into the polyester portion of the cover and is a unique textile that converts body heat into energy, which some research shows helps with muscle recovery. This can help you wake up feeling more refreshed and energized, especially if you live a more active lifestyle.

Comfort Layer

The main core of the Bear Pro topper is a single slab of memory foam. Bear makes sure to get this foam CertiPUR-US® certified. This certification means that the foam is produced without harsh chemicals, heavy metals and that the production process meets certain environmental emissions standards.

Topper Height

The Bear Pro topper is 3” tall.

Bear Pro Mattress Topper Performance

Now that you have an idea about how this topper feels and which sleeping positions will feel most comfortable on the Bear Pro topper, let’s cover a few more performance considerations.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

During my testing, I didn’t notice any hot spots developing on the Bear Pro topper. I definitely fall in the hot sleeper category, so if you’re like me this should be a good option to stay cool at night. The polyester cover does a good job at staying cool throughout the night, and the foam doesn’t trap much heat.

Of course, if you still want something designed specifically for cooling, be sure to check out our best cooling mattress toppers list for more options.

Durability

Bear offers a three-year warranty on this topper, and with good care, I can see it lasting about that long, too. Some foam toppers aren’t built to be long lasting, but the Bear topper also comes inside of a cover, so this can help protect the foam and make it last longer.

Off-Gassing

The Bear Pro topper comes compressed into a cardboard box. But I found that it expanded almost immediately when I unpackaged it. Even with a quick expansion, it might be a good idea to let the topper off-gas. What I mean by this is that you might want to let the topper air out in a well ventilated area. Foam toppers usually come with a chemical smell, which is a result of the packaging process, so those with sensitive noses should let the topper off-gas and air out for about 24-48 hours.

Cleaning

The outer cover is removable and machine-washable. Bear recommends washing it on a delicate wash cycle in cold water with a mild detergent. From there, you should air dry the cover. The inner foam core is not washable.

Allergens

Bear mentions that this topper is a hypoallergenic product. The outer cover should not trap or attract allergens in your sleep environment. Plus, it is machine-washable, which can eliminate dirt, dust and dust mites that may end up on the topper.

Company Policies

Here’s what Bear offers whenever you make a purchase.

Warranty

If you end up loving your Bear Pro mattress topper and keep it, it comes with a three-year warranty. With good care, this topper should last around that amount of time.

Sleep Trial

You’ll have 30 days from the day the Bear Pro mattress topper arrives on your doorstep to test it out. During this window you’ll be able to test the topper to see if it’s right for you.

Return Policy

Bear offers free shipping and returns on all orders. As with the sleep trial above, you’ll have 30 days to make return or exchange decisions in order to get a full refund or an exchange.

How Does the Bear Pro Mattress Topper Compare to Other Toppers?

With so many toppers to choose from, you might not be convinced that the Bear Pro topper is the right one for you yet. And I think it’s always a good idea to do a little comparison shopping, so let’s see how the Bear Pro topper stacks up against other toppers from TEMPUR-Pedic and Parachute.

Bear vs TEMPUR

On paper, the Bear Pro mattress topper and the TEMPUR-Adapt mattress topper might seem similar. But after testing both, I can say that they do perform differently. The TEMPUR-Adapt topper uses TEMPUR material, which has that more traditional memory foam feeling to it. When you press into it, you’ll feel yourself sink into this topper. The Bear Pro topper has a somewhat slow-moving quality, but it springs back a bit faster than the TEMPUR topper.

This difference in feel makes the Bear Pro topper really easy to move around on. So if you’re a combination sleeper, or someone who moves around frequently during the night, the Bear topper is the better choice. But the TEMPUR topper will likely have an easier time staying in place for combination sleepers thanks to the cover’s elastic straps that attach it to the mattress.

Hot sleepers might also enjoy the Bear topper more. The polyester cover is cool-to-the-touch and stays relatively cool during the night. The TEMPUR topper is more prone to trapping heat and overheating. Hot sleepers who do want the TEMPUR topper will want to opt for the cooling cover, albeit at a higher price.

Bear vs Parachute

If you like down in your pillows, you can surround yourself with feathers with a feather bed. Parachute makes a down feather bed that blends fiber-like down for plush comfort with tiny feathers that offer support. These feathers are encased in a soft, cotton outer shell. Essentially, sleeping on a feather bed feels like sleeping on a really big down feather pillow.

A man sleeps on his back.

Because the Bear Pro topper is made with memory foam, this means it’ll feel much different than the Parachute feather bed. Side sleepers who want some pressure relief should get the Bear Pro topper, while back sleepers will enjoy the Parachute topper thanks to its supportive feel.

However, one of the biggest drawbacks to using a feather bed is that the feathers sometimes trap allergens in your sleep environment. So, if you have sensitive allergies, opt for the Bear Pro topper, as it is a hypoallergenic product.

How long will the Bear Pro mattress topper last?

How long will the Bear Pro mattress topper last?

Around three years. With good care, the Bear Pro topper should last the length of its warranty, which is three years. This is, of course, if it’s being used every night. It certainly could last longer if it’s used in a guest room.

What is Celliant?

Celliant is a synthetic material made from silicon and aluminum oxide. All of Bear’s mattress related products feature this unique material. Some research shows that it has the ability to take your body heat and convert it into infrared rays and direct it back into your body to help your body recover while you sleep. It’s been reported to help with increasing blood flow and regulating your body temperature.

What if I don’t like my Bear Pro mattress topper?

You can return it or exchange it within 30 days. Bear offers a full refund and will cover the cost of shipping for both returns and exchanges.
