Memory foam mattress toppers used to be a single slab of foam you fit under your fitted sheet. But as the years have gone on, they’ve gained outer, removable covers, and corner straps to attach it to your mattress. But the Coop Sleep Goods Retreat mattress topper does things a little differently. It uses shredded foam!

In my unbiased review, I’ll cover everything about this topper, from the materials used, how it performs on a bed, price, and much more.

Coop Sleep Goods is a very popular online bedding brand. We’ve covered the Coop Original pillow, the Coop Eden pillow, and the Coop Sleep Goods body pillow before. They all feature hypoallergenic, shredded foam.

But Coop took this idea and stuffed it into a mattress topper! Here’s a brief overview on who will enjoy the Coop Sleep Goods Retreat mattress topper, and who might need to look for something else:

Mattress toppers are great for softening mattresses that are too firm, or if your mattress needs a little extra life. So, how does the Coop Sleep Goods Retreat mattress topper feel and how can it soften your mattress? Let’s find out.

What’s the Coop Sleep Goods Retreat Mattress Topper’s Firmness?

The Coop Sleep Goods Retreat topper has a soft-to-medium firm feel to it. The foam is shredded, making it feel like the brand’s shredded memory foam pillows. The only difference here is that the topper covers more area, and can’t be adjusted like the pillows.

Here at Mattress Clarity, we rate mattresses on a scale from one to 10, with one being like a cloud, and 10 being like concrete. If your bed falls on the firmer side of this scale, the Coop Sleep Goods Retreat topper will soften your mattress by about two points.

Take, for example, the Saatva Classic mattress. We’ve rated this mattress a 7/10. If you were to use the Retreat topper, it would make it feel much softer, close to a 5/10.

What Does the Coop Sleep Goods Retreat Mattress Topper Feel Like?

The shredded foam in this topper gives it a very plush, slow-moving feel. Once the topper fully expanded, the foam was able to provide some good pressure relief along my shoulders and hips. If you have a firm mattress and want to add a pillow top feel, this topper is a good choice.

Sleeping on the Coop Sleep Goods Retreat Mattress Topper

Once the topper was fully expanded, it was ready for testing. My colleague, Marten, mentioned how it looked like a memory foam feather bed because of the baffle box design, and that’s a good way of describing this topper!

I was a little worried about this topper feeling lumpy and like I was on top of a bunch of pillows, but that wasn’t the case here. I started out on my back, and the foam had a nice, plush feel. I could feel it contouring around my body immediately. And I didn’t notice it feeling lumpy.

Some toppers are hard to move around on when they’re made of thick memory foam. But the Retreat was fairly easy to move around on. I think this is because of the shredded foam fill and baffle box construction. You don’t feel trapped on this topper.

So, when I moved over to my side, I did it with ease. I’m a natural side sleeper, and this topper provided some good relief for the pressure points in my shoulders and hips. However, I have to say, this topper felt much more comfortable, to me, while resting on my back.

And just for the sake of being thorough, I tried this topper out on my stomach. I felt fairly comfortable here, too. But I think over time, some folks would probably develop some lower back pain. It’s not supportive enough to keep stomach sleepers hips elevated.

30-60 Min Nap

When it came time for a quick nap, I decided to stay on my back. Weirdly, I felt compelled to try this topper without a pillow, just because it felt like one of Coop’s pillows to begin with.

It was very comfortable and as mentioned earlier, when I eventually changed positions, it was easy to do so. Now, I will say I don’t recommend sleeping on your side without a pillow.

But when I moved over to my stomach, this topper felt very comfortable for a quick nap. However, I still wouldn’t recommend it for long term use if you’re a strict stomach sleeper.

Overall, this topper did its job and stayed relatively cool as well!

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lb – 230 lb

Average weight side and back sleepers should find good pressure relief and body contouring from the Retreat topper. Combination sleepers will also have the ability to move with relative ease to change positions.

I don’t recommend this topper for stomach sleepers outside of a quick nap. The goal of a topper is to soften firm mattresses. Stomach sleepers need a firm mattress to keep their hips elevated to prevent lower back pain.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lb

Thanks to the thickness of this topper, heavyweight back and side sleepers will find a good amount of support. The foam will provide some nice comfort, body contouring, and pressure relief without making you feel like you’re touching your mattress below.

Again, I don’t recommend this topper to heavier stomach sleepers. You’ll compress the foam much more than other body types, which will definitely increase your chances of developing lower back pain.

Lightweight Sleepers – Less than 130 lb

This topper should be a good pick for lightweight sleepers of all sleeping positions. It could be thick and firm enough to support stomach sleepers, though I still wouldn’t recommend it fully. But side and back sleepers will be able to soften their existing firm mattress a good deal to get what they need.

Cover

The Coop Sleep Goods Retreat mattress topper has an outer cover made from 100% brushed microfiber. This cover is not removable, but it does have a baffle box construction to it. This means that the cover is sewn through to keep the fill evenly distributed throughout the topper.

And in each of the corners, you’ll find an elastic corner strap. This will attach the topper firmly to your mattress to prevent it from shifting around if you toss and turn.

Comfort Layer

Within the microfiber cover, Coop uses a blend of shredded memory foam and plush microfibers. This foam has been CertiPUR-US® and GREENGUARD Gold certified. These certifications mean the foam has met rigorous standards for safe production, which includes being free from harmful chemicals.

Topper Height

The Retreat topper is 5” thick.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

Memory foam has been notorious for trapping heat in the past. But these days there are ways to get around sleeping hot on foam.

The Retreat topper has a breathable cover on the outside. And with the foam fill being shredded, it allows for air to flow through the topper much easier.

I’m a hot sleeper most of the time; it can take me a good amount of time to cool off when I climb into bed. When I tested out the Retreat topper, it actually felt cool to the touch, even though there’s not a specific cooling feature to the cover.

As I rested, I was never worried about this topper trapping heat or overheating.

Durability

When it comes to mattress toppers, durability is a big consideration, especially if you can’t get a new mattress. The Retreat topper is a high-quality topper with an outer cover and elastic corner straps to attach it to your mattress.

Though you can’t machine-wash this topper, these added elements of an outer cover, baffle box construction, and elastic straps should add to its durability.

With good care and spot cleaning when you can, this topper should last at least two to three years.

Off-Gassing

The Coop Sleep Goods Retreat topper comes to you compressed in plastic. You will need to let the topper expand and let it off-gas. The expansion should take no more than an hour or so, but there may be a slight chemical smell to it. This usually dissipates after 24 hours.

Cleaning

Unfortunately, the topper is not machine-washable, nor does it come with a removable cover. You will have to spot clean the topper when necessary.

Here’s what Coop recommends:

• Treat affected areas with a damp sponge using a mild detergent
• Rinse with a clean sponge
• Gently squeeze out remaining water
• Let air dry

Allergens

Coop mentions that the fill for the Retreat topper is 100% hypoallergenic. If you suffer from sensitive allergies, you won’t have to worry about trapping allergens in your sleep environment.

When it comes to toppers, the main goal is to soften your mattress. But there are those out there who have a mattress that’s too soft, and having the option to firm up their mattress can help. Avocado makes its latex mattress topper in two firmness options: plush and firm.

Besides a firmness option, the main differences between the Avocado topper and the Retreat topper are the materials. Avocado uses bouncy, responsive Talalay latex.
