TEMPUR-Adapt Topper Firmness & Feel
Mattress toppers change the firmness and feel to your mattress. Let’s talk about how firm the TEMPUR-Adapt is and what it feels like, and how these will change your mattress.
What’s the TEMPUR-Adapt Topper’s Firmness?
The TEMPUR-Adapt is quite soft. You can press your hand into it and leave an impression as it slowly moves back into place. This topper is ideal for those who want to significantly soften their mattress.
Using our Mattress Clarity score ranking, this topper will be able to soften a mattress by about two points. I tested it on a mattress that came in at around 6.5/10, or a standard medium-firm mattress. This topper made it feel much softer, closer to a 4.5/10.
What does the TEMPUR-Adapt Topper Feel Like?
When you think of memory foam, you think of that slow-moving, almost quicksand feeling. That’s exactly what you get with the TEMPUR-Adapt topper.
It’ll contour around your body and cushion your joints and provide some really good pressure relief. This makes it a particularly good option for anyone suffering from joint pain of any kind.
Sleeping on the TEMPUR-Adapt Topper
After unboxing the TEMPUR-Adapt and letting it off-gas (release gasses trapped during compression), I started testing it on my back. This topper is very soft and almost plush. As I rested on my back, I felt lots of immediate body contouring. I could feel it cushion my lumbar area, but still felt supported.
Moving on to my side, my shoulder felt little to no pressure. However, my hips dipped in a bit more than I would have liked. That dipping led to a little pressure build up on my hips as I rested. Over time, this could cause pain. I should note that I am a heavyweight sleeper, so this is probably a result of me sinking through the topper and reaching the mattress beneath.
Moving on to my stomach, I felt very comfortable. But while this could be a good option for a quick nap, chronic stomach sleepers might find their hips dipping into the topper. This will cause some strain on your lower back, and could cause some lower back pain to develop over time.
30-60 Min Nap
Getting the TEMPUR-Adapt placed on the mattress was easy thanks to the straps. This helped it stay nice and secure. Though the foam is super slow-moving and contoured to my body almost immediately, I found that it was still easy to move around on. However, not everyone will experience it that way. If you enjoy the slow-moving feel of memory foam, I’d suggest this topper!
When it came time to take a nap test, I found myself switching from my side to my back. Though I’m a natural side sleeper, I really enjoyed this topper for back sleeping. Though I sometimes felt some pressure on my hips while resting on my side, overall this is still a solid choice for both back and average to lightweight side sleepers.
I will say, however, hot sleepers should beware. Though TEMPUR-Pedic mentions that the cover is made of a polyester/cotton blend that has some moisture-wicking properties, I found that some hot spots were developing while I napped. Memory foam uses your body heat to mold and contour, and while this topper was almost immediately contouring, the fact that you’re resting within the foam is a perfect storm for heat retention.
If you find yourself constantly overheating, opt for the cooling cover for this topper, or check out some other cooling toppers with our best cooling toppers list!
Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lb – 230 lb
Average weight back and side sleepers should enjoy a good amount of pressure relief and body contouring on the TEMPUR-Adapt topper. The memory foam will mold and contour around your body and can provide some ease for your joints.
Most average weight stomach sleepers might be able to enjoy a quick nap on this topper every now and then, but I wouldn’t recommend it for every night use for stomach sleeping.
Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lb
Heavyweight back sleepers should enjoy the TEMPUR-Adapt thanks to the body contouring it can provide. I think this could be a good option for heavyweight side sleepers, too but because of how soft this topper is, I’d be worried about some reaching the mattress underneath.
Heavyweight stomach sleepers should steer clear from the TEMPUR-Adapt. Because you’ll compress the foam a good deal, your hips will not be very supported, which will cause lower back pain.
Lightweight Sleepers – Less than 130 lb
Most lightweight back and side will find some good comfort and pressure relief from the TEMPUR-Adapt. Similarly to average weight and heavyweight sleepers, stomach sleepers should look at getting a firmer option if they need to change the feel of their mattress.
TEMPUR-Adapt Topper Construction
Let’s break down the TEMPUR-Adapt Topper by looking at the high-quality materials that go into it.
Cover
The TEMPUR-Adapt comes with an outer, removable cover. TEMPUR-Pedic uses a blend of cotton and polyester for the Adapt’s cover. TEMPUR calls this a “high performance” cover, and has infused it with moisture-wicking properties to help you stay dry.
However, you do have the option to purchase this topper with cooling technology for an extra fee. Regardless of which cover you choose, the cover has elastic corner straps which can firmly attach the topper to your mattress.
Comfort Layer
The comfort layer is made up of the proprietary TEMPUR material. This type of memory foam is usually what most associate with that classic slow-moving, squishy foam feel. This will provide really nice body contouring and pressure relief.
Topper Height
The TEMPUR-Adapt is 3” tall.

Now that we’ve covered important factors such as firmness, feel, and sleeping positions, let’s take a look at some other key performance considerations for the TEMPUR-Adapt.
Sleeping Hot or Cold
Overall, hot sleepers will want to invest in the cooling technology and cover for the TEMPUR-Adapt. TEMPUR-Pedic does mention that the cover has moisture-wicking properties to it, but in my testing, I found that some hot spots began to pop up the more I rested on the Adapt.
Durability
Because the TEMPUR-Adapt comes with a cover, it is going to be more durable than other toppers that come to you without. The cover helps protect the foam from exposure to dirt and allergens. And TEMPUR-Pedic mentions that the TEMPUR material is designed to be more durable than other memory foam. This topper should last you at least three to five years with good care.
Off-Gassing
The TEMPUR-Adapt topper does come compressed in a box. When you remove all the packaging, you’ll need to let it off-gas and expand. For me, the expansion took about an hour, so this topper is not ready to use right out of the box.
You may notice a slight chemical smell to the topper. This is a result of the compression process. This smell usually dissipates after about 24-48 hours. Be sure to let it off-gas in a well ventilated area.
Cleaning
The outer cover is removable and machine-washable. TEMPUR-Pedic recommends washing it in cold water with a mild detergent. For drying, TEMPUR-Pedic mentions air drying the cover is ideal, but it can be machine-dried on a low or cool heat setting.
Allergens
TEMPUR-Pedic says that the cover is hypoallergenic and can resist dust mites and common allergens in your sleep environment. If you have sensitive allergies, this is a good option!
Company Policies
TEMPUR-Pedic is a well known brand that many people trust. Here’s what TEMPUR-Pedic offers when you make a purchase with them.
Warranty
The TEMPUR-Adapt has a 10-year warranty. This is a very impressive warranty for a mattress topper, matching the baseline for some mattress warranties.
This means that the TEMPUR-Adapt should last you a good while! You may not need the TEMPUR-Adapt for 10 years, but having such a long warranty proves that this should be a long-lasting product.
Sleep Trial
There is no sleep trial for the TEMPUR-Adapt topper.
Return Policy
TEMPUR-Pedic offers free shipping on all orders. However, TEMPUR-Pedic does not accept returns on the TEMPUR-Adapt. The only exception to this is if the topper was damaged from the delivery process or if there is a manufacturing defect.
How Does the TEMPUR-Adapt Topper Compare to Other Toppers?
TEMPUR-Pedic certainly has the name recognition these days. However, how does the TEMPUR-Adapt stand up to two other toppers on the market? Let’s compare the TEMPUR-Adapt to a more responsive memory foam topper, the Nolah topper, and a latex foam topper, the Avocado topper.
TEMPUR-Pedic vs Nolah
Not all memory foam feels the same. While the TEMPUR-Adapt topper is the traditional memory foam, with the slow-moving, sinking feeling to it, Nolah uses a more responsive memory foam in its topper. The Nolah topper is a 2” memory foam topper that uses Nolah’s proprietary AirScape™ foam that springs back into place immediately, unlike the Adapt. This makes it easy to move around on and ideal for combination sleepers.
Both provide good body contouring and pressure relief, but because Nolah’s is shorter and more responsive, it’s more firm than the Adapt. Though stomach sleepers need very firm mattresses, the Nolah topper is firm enough that it should still be a good fit for most average and lightweight stomach sleepers.

TEMPUR-Pedic vs Avocado
Eco-conscious shoppers who like responsive latex foam should consider the Avocado mattress topper. Unlike the TEMPUR-Adapt, this topper is springy and responsive, but should still provide a good deal of firmness adjustment to your mattress. However, Avocado does sell this topper in a firm option for those who need to firm up a too soft mattress.
The Avocado topper will also be a better pick for hot sleepers. Latex is breathable and is often perforated for airflow, which the Avocado topper is. This topper also features a breathable organic cotton cover. You can opt for a cooling cover on the Adapt, but for an extra fee. But what the TEMPUR-Adapt does have is straps which can securely attach it to the mattress, while the Avocado topper does not.
