Nolah Mattress Topper Firmness & Feel

The main goal of a mattress topper is to change the feel of your mattress. Let’s talk about how firm the Nolah topper is and how it’s going to feel on your bed.

What’s the Nolah Mattress Topper’s Firmness?

Nolah offers its topper in two firmness levels: plush and luxury firm. For this review, I received the plush version. True to its name, this is a very soft, plush-feeling mattress topper.

A hand presses into the Nolah Mattress Topper.

At Mattress Clarity, we rate mattresses on a scale from one to 10 when it comes to firmness, with one being like a cloud, and 10 being like hard concrete. The Nolah topper isn’t a super thick topper, but the plush version should soften a mattress by about two points.

If you have a firm mattress, like the Saatva Classic, which is a 7/10 on our scale, this topper will make it feel more like a 5/10.

What does the Nolah Mattress Topper Feel Like?

The Nolah mattress topper is made out of foam, and as such, it does have a slightly slow-moving feel to it. However, Nolah uses its proprietary AirFoam™, which was designed to be more responsive.

A hand squeezes the Nolah Mattress Topper.

You’ll sink in just a little as this topper contours to your body, but it’s still very easy to move around on. You won’t feel like you’re trapped in the foam.

Sleeping on the Nolah Mattress Topper

For a thinner mattress topper, being only 2”, I was curious to see how the Nolah topper would feel. The set up was rather easy, and having the elastic bands to attach it to the mattress is very convenient.

Nolah’s AirFoam™ combines that classic body contouring and pressure relief from standard memory foam with more responsive and easy-to-move-around-on qualities from latex foam. This was also really nice to have because some foam toppers I’ve tested have trapped me and made moving around awkward.

As a side sleeper, I started out on my side and felt amazing pressure relief, especially in the pressure points along my hips. Moving over to my back, I felt a good amount of support and didn’t feel like I was going to bottom out.

I tried it out on my stomach, and while I felt comfortable here, I don’t recommend sleeping on the plush version of this topper. I think after some time, your hips would begin to dip, which could cause back pain.

30-60 Min Nap

When it came time for a nap, I decided to stay on my side. As someone who tends to toss and turn during the night, I figured this was the true test for this topper.

As I mentioned earlier, I was amazed at the pressure relief in my hips. At the time of writing this review, my left hip had been giving me some issues, and resting on this topper felt like there was no pain or pressure at all.

A man rests on his side while on top of the Nolah Mattress Topper.

Sure enough, as I napped, I switched over to my right side and the topper was very easy to move around on. Even as a heavier person, this topper was able to support my body weight. And because I wasn’t sinking straight through the topper, I didn’t sleep too hot because the topper wasn’t retaining any of my body heat.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lb – 230 lb

Average weight side and back sleepers should find a good amount of pressure-relieving comfort and support from this topper. It conforms around your body without letting you sink too far in.

However, stomach sleepers will want to opt for the luxury firm or keep their firm mattress sans topper to get optimal support.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lb

Heavyweight back and side sleepers should also find good support and pressure relief on the Nolah topper. For more high-density support, the luxury firm could be the better choice. But as a heavier person myself, I still felt great on the plush model.

Heavier stomach sleepers may be able to find comfort on the luxury firm option, but on the plush model, your hips would sink too far, which could cause lower back pain.

Lightweight Sleepers – Less than 130 lb

Lightweight sleepers of all sleeping positions should find comfort and support on both models of the Nolah topper. Side and back sleepers should opt for the plush model, while stomach sleepers should enjoy the luxury firm model.

Nolah Mattress Topper Construction

Let’s take a look at the materials that make up the Nolah mattress topper.

Cover

The Nolah topper has an outer, organic cotton cover with elastic bands in each of the corners to firmly attach it to your mattress. The current version of the Nolah topper does not have a removable cover. However, the model I tested did have a removable cover, but this is no longer the case.

Comfort Layer

Within the cover is a 2” thick piece of Nolah’s proprietary AirFoam™. This material has been CertiPUR-US® certified, meaning that the foam has passed rigorous tests, proving it is made without harmful chemicals.

Nolah AirFoam™ is a unique type of polyfoam that has that soft, slow-moving feel but is more responsive than traditional memory foam. It’s very easy to move around on, and has an open-cell construction, making it very breathable.

Topper Height

The Nolah mattress topper is 2” tall.

Nolah Mattress Topper Performance

Let’s get into some other key performance considerations for the Nolah mattress topper.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

The Nolah mattress topper is one of the best cooling mattress toppers out there. The Nolah AirFoam™ has been optimized for cooling and temperature regulation.

The outer cover is made of cotton, which is quite breathable so it won’t trap heat. But the foam has an open-cell structure which won’t trap heat.

Durability

Nolah offers a 10-year warranty on the Nolah mattress topper. This is a very substantial warranty for a topper, which indicates that this topper should be rather long lasting.

The Nolah AirFoam™ shouldn’t sag easily, and with the addition of a cover, it should last you several years.

Off-Gassing

Nolah does compress its topper into a cardboard box. It will need some time to expand when you remove it from its packaging. There may also be a slight chemical smell, which is a result of the compression.

If you do notice this, don’t worry too much. This usually dissipates after 24-48 hours.

Cleaning

Because the outer cover is not removable, Nolah recommends spot cleaning only for this topper.

I should point out that the model I tested had a removable cover, which Nolah has since changed. If you still have a removable cover, you can machine wash that.

Allergens

The Nolah mattress topper is not listed as a hypoallergenic topper. However, since you can machine wash the topper, you can eliminate any dirt, dust mites, and allergens that the cover may trap or accumulate.

Company Policies

Here’s what you can expect when you make a purchase with Nolah.

Warranty

As mentioned, Nolah offers a 10-year warranty on the Nolah mattress topper.

Sleep Trial

From the day the topper arrives on your doorstep, you have a 30-night trial period to test it out.

Return Policy

If, during the trial period, you’re not satisfied with the Nolah topper, you can request a return. Nolah covers shipping for all orders, but you may be responsible for handling the shipping costs for returns or exchanges, or you can purchase a discounted shipping label from Nolah when you initiate your return.

How Does the Nolah Mattress Topper Compare to Other Toppers?

If you’re in the market for a new mattress topper, but don’t know if the Nolah topper is for you, don’t stress. I’ve taken the time to compare the Nolah mattress topper with two other toppers with different materials: the Avocado Organic Latex mattress topper and the Parachute Feather Bed.

Nolah vs Avocado

Memory foam mattress toppers tend to feel much different than latex foam toppers. And while Nolah still designed its AirFoam™ to mimic some qualities of latex foam, it’s still a form of memory foam.

Avocado Mattress Topper

Avocado makes a variety of latex foam products, and its topper is one of them. This topper also comes in two firmness options, but it will feel significantly more bouncy and responsive than the Nolah topper.

Because of this, you might notice motion transfer through the Avocado topper more, while the Nolah topper will isolate motion better. But if you’re on the hunt for a high-quality organic topper, the Avocado is the better choice.

Nolah vs Parachute

Down mattress toppers, also known as feather beds, are a good choice for people who love the cushioning feel of down, and want it all around them. The Parachute Feather Bed is a high-quality feather bed that offers that classic down cushioning feel.

A man sleeps on his back.

Unlike the Nolah topper, the Parachute Feather Bed is only available in one firmness level, and it will give your bed a softer, pillow top feel. The Nolah topper has a good amount of responsiveness while still having that memory foam feel to it, and has two firmness options. So, if that’s your preference, opt for the Nolah topper.

FAQs

Still have questions that need answered? I’ve gathered some of the most frequently asked questions to help out.

What is Nolah AirFoam™ made of?

Just like TEMPUR-Pedic, Nolah makes its own proprietary memory foam material called Nolah AirFoam™. This is a polyurethane memory foam that has been designed to mimic Talalay latex.

It will feel similar to traditional memory foam, but has a more responsive quality to it that makes it easy to move around on. It also features an open-cell design, which means that the foam won’t trap heat, so it sleeps much cooler than traditional foam as well.

How long will the Nolah mattress topper last?

Nolah built its topper to last. It comes with a 10-year warranty, and is made of very durable materials. It should last you at least a few years with good care.

What thickness of mattress topper is best for back pain?

Mattress toppers can range in height from 2” to 4”. If you’re struggling with back pain, toppers can certainly help, and this range of heights will work for just about anyone, depending on body type.

Lighter sleepers might only need a 2” topper, while heavier people need a thicker 4” mattress topper to get enough body contouring and pressure relief to help with back pain.
