Layla Pillows Firmness and Feel
When shopping for a new pillow, it’s super important to consider its firmness level and feel. Keep reading to learn which pillow works best for you.
How Firm Are the Layla Pillows?
Right out of the box, both pillows feel medium firm. Thanks to its construction, however, you can easily take out some of the filling and soften the pillows.
Sleeping on the Layla Pillows
Because you can remove some of the interior fluff, the Layla pillows should work well for all three sleeping positions. To find the right pillow height, make sure your body is in neutral alignment. For side sleepers, this means your ears line up with your shoulders. If you’re a back or stomach sleeper, make sure your pillow allows your chin to line up with your sternum.
What Do the Layla Pillows Feel Like?
The Layla memory foam pillow feels slightly softer than the Kapok. The filling, made of shredded memory foam pieces, gives the pillow a nice bounce and responsiveness.
RELATED: GhostPillow Review
The Layla Kapok pillow weighs more than the memory foam model, and it doesn’t have much bounce. When your head hits the pillow, it will really sink into it. The kapok tree fibers and memory foam pieces give the pillow the feeling of traditional down, so it’s super lofty and luxurious.
Average Weight Sleepers – 130lbs – 230lbs
On the Layla pillows, average weight sleepers should feel comfortable in all three sleeping positions. Side sleepers likely won’t have to remove any of the filling. Back sleepers, however, may want to remove a small portion of the interior fluff. Stomach sleepers typically need a flat sleeping surface, so they will need to take out a lot of the foam and fibers.
Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230lbs
The Layla pillows also work well for heavier sleepers. Back sleepers should easily reach neutral alignment on either the memory foam or Kapok pillows. Larger side sleepers, however, may prefer the loftier Kapok pillow. This pillow is more dense, so it creates more support. Heavier stomach sleepers will need to take out some of the pillow’s filling to reach neutral alignment.
Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130lbs
Lightweight sleepers may need to remove some of the filling in order to feel comfortable on the Layla pillows, but it should still work for every sleeping position.
Layla Pillow Construction
To fully understand the differences between the two pillows, we’ll need to look closely at their construction.
Cover
Both pillows feature Layla’s classic hexagonal stitching, but they’re made with different materials. The Layla memory foam pillow has a soft cover made out of breathable polyester fabric.
The Kapok pillow’s cover has a few extra features. It still has a polyester cover, but it’s also made with copper fibers. Copper helps pull heat away from the body, and it’s antimicrobial.
Core
When you unzip the covers, you’ll find the pillows also have very different fillings. The memory foam pillow’s filling consists of open-celled memory foam and polyester fibers. Both materials feel especially breathable, so they shouldn’t trap heat.
RELATED: Best Cooling Pillows
The Kapok pillow’s filling also has pieces of open-celled memory foam, but it doesn’t have poly fiber. Instead, the pillow is filled with fibers harvested from the seeds of Kapok trees. This all-natural material is responsibly sourced, and it feels similar to down feathers.
Weight
A queen size memory foam pillow weighs 3.7lbs, and a queen size Kapok pillow weighs 4lbs.
Height/Loft
Both pillows allow sleepers to customize the loft. Right out of the box, the Kapok pillow is slightly loftier.

Layla Pillow Performance
How do these two pillows compare when it comes to cooling, off-gassing, and maintenance? Let’s check out their performance features.
Sleeping Hot or Cold
Both pillows have impressive cooling features. The memory foam pillow’s breathable construction allows for plenty of airflow. If you especially worry about sleeping hot at night, check out the Kapok pillow. This model has copper fibers sewn into the cover, which is both temperature regulating and antimicrobial. You shouldn’t trap body heat on this pillow.
Off-Gassing
When you unbox your Layla pillow, you will notice a slight chemical smell. We call this off-gassing, and it’s completely normal. If you’re sensitive to odors, you may need to wait for your pillow to air out before sleeping on it. Usually, this takes about 48 hours.
Care Instructions
The memory foam pillow contains an inner liner that holds all of the filling, so it’s super easy to wash and maintain. Just unzip the outer cover and wash on the cold cycle and tumble dry.
Because it doesn’t contain an interior liner, the Kapok pillow isn’t as easy to wash. We recommend putting a pillow case around it.
Allergies
Layla uses only CertiPur-US Certified foams, so they’re free from many harmful chemicals.
Company Policies
Curious about Layla’s warranty information, sleep trial period, and return policy? We’ve outlined everything you need to know.
Warranty Info
Both pillows are backed by a 5-year warranty.
Sleep Trial
Layla offers a 120-night sleep trial period.
Return Policy
If you aren’t happy with your pillow during the initial sleep trial period, you can return it for a full refund.
Common Layla Pillow Complaints
Although most people rave about the Layla pillows, we occasionally come across negative reviews. Many people complained about the pillows’ off-gassing periods. When it first arrives, you’ll notice a slight chemical smell. This is completely normal, and it should fade in 48 hours.
Others have complained about how difficult it is to clean the Kapok pillow. While it’s possible to put the entire pillow in the washing machine, it’s difficult to dry it. If you opt for this model, you’ll want to put a pillow case around it.
How Do the Layla Pillows Compare to Other Pillows?
Now, let’s see how the Layla pillows compare to other popular products on the market!
Layla Pillows vs Tuft & Needle Foam Pillow
If you’re a fan of shredded memory foam pillows, you may prefer Layla’s products. Both of their models include fillings made with tiny pieces of fiber and foam. Because it’s easy to take out the fluff, Layla pillows have adjustable lofts.
The Tuft & Needle pillow, on the other hand, has a set loft size of 5” tall. It’s made with the company’s proprietary responsive foam. For extra support and durability, Tuft & Needle custom cuts each piece of foam.

Layla Pillows vs Sleep Number True Temp Pillow
The Layla and Sleep Number pillows have many similarities. They’re both cooling pillows, and they’re adjustable. However, the Sleep Number True Temp pillow has a few extra bells and whistles.
Sleep Number’s cover has soft fiberfill sewn into the edges. This creates some plush comfort. For added support, the Sleep Number pillow has a foam insert. This firm material is especially great for side sleepers, but stomach sleepers should feel comfortable if they remove the foam insert.
Layla’s pillows don’t have foam inserts. Instead, they have a filling made with shredded pieces of foam and fiber. The Layla memory foam pillow is super easy to wash, but the Kapok pillow is a bit more difficult. Sleep Number’s cover is completely machine washable, and it’s hypoallergenic.
The pillows fall in a similar price range, and you can save some money by using a Mattress Clarity coupon.
