Whenever you’re hunting for a new mattress, two of the most important factors to consider are firmness and feel. So let’s take a close look at these qualities on the Saatva and Puffy Cloud!
How Firm Are The Saatva And Puffy Mattresses?
As noted above, the Saatva mattress comes in three firmnesses: Plush Soft, Luxury Firm, and Firm. We ranked the Luxury Firm around a 7/10 on the firmness scale. The industry standard for average firmness is 6.5/10, meaning we found the Luxury Firm model to be a bit firmer than average. The soft pillow-top is balanced out by the firmer coil layers underneath. While we aren’t focused on the Plush Soft model in this review, it’s worth noting that we ranked this as one of the best soft mattresses.
We also ranked the Puffy Cloud mattress around a 7/10, or a touch firmer than average. While the bed’s comfort layer is soft, it’s also very thin, so we felt the firmer transition and support layers underneath. Note that any bed’s firmness will vary a bit depending on your body weight and personal preferences.
Sleeping On The Saatva And Puffy Mattresses (Sleeping Positions)
We personally tested each of these mattresses in every sleeping position. Here’s how we felt on these beds.
Saatva
We enjoyed a great balance of spinal support and comfort while back sleeping on the Saatva. Our hips sank into the pillow-top a bit for some pressure relief, but not too far—so our spine stayed aligned. The dual coil layers offered plenty of spinal support, including great lumbar support. The microcoils also created some additional body contouring. All told, we found the Saatva to be a fantastic mattress for lower back pain and sciatica and well as one of the best mattresses for arthritis.
While side sleeping on the Saatva, we enjoyed a decent amount of pressure relief around our shoulder and hip. That said, folks who spend all night in this position might prefer the softer Plush Soft model.
The Saatva offered decent support while stomach sleeping. Our hips stayed aligned with our spine, and we enjoyed good overall spinal support. Note that heavier-weight sleepers might need the Saatva Firm model or another more supportive bed.
Puffy Cloud
While back sleeping on the Puffy Cloud mattress, we enjoyed a pleasant balance of comfort and support. Our hips sank through the thin comfort layer, but the transition layer underneath ensured they didn’t bow too far into the mattress. Meanwhile, the comfort layer offers some nice body contouring.
Our heavier-weight reviewer felt some pressure on the shoulder and hip while side sleeping on the Puffy Cloud. However, lighter-weight sleepers should get the pressure relief they need here since the thinner comfort layer should be sufficient.
In our experience, the Puffy Cloud is not supportive enough for stomach sleeping. Our hips dipped into the mattress and pulled the spine out of alignment, which created some pain in the lower back. People who prefer this position will definitely want a more supportive mattress for stomach sleepers.
What Do The Saatva And Puffy Mattresses Feel Like?
The Saatva has a classic innerspring feel with a pillow-top feel right on top. The pillow-top and the microcoils offer some body contouring, while the dual layers of coils create plenty of bounce and responsiveness. It’s easy to move around on this mattress, and sleepers won’t feel stuck.
Overall, the Puffy Cloud has a balanced foam feel. It has a layer of slow-moving memory foam on top, which is balanced out by firmer and more responsive foams underneath. It should be pretty easy to change positions on this bed.
Average-Weight Sleepers – 130lbs – 230lbs
The Saatva’s Luxury Firm model should be a great fit for most average-weight sleepers. It offers excellent spinal support to back sleepers, decent pressure relief for side sleepers, and a supportive feel for stomach sleepers. Note that side sleepers who prefer a softer feel will probably want the Plush Soft model.
The Puffy Cloud should offer a nice blend of comfort and support for average-weight back sleepers. Average-weight side sleepers will most likely experience too much pressure around the shoulder and hip. The Puffy Cloud will not be supportive enough for most average-weight stomach sleepers.
Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230lbs
Heavyweight back sleepers who weigh closer to 230lbs should feel well-supported on Saatva’s Luxury Firm model. Folks who require more support should consider the Firm model or the Saatva HD, which is made specifically for heavy people. Heavyweight side sleepers should enjoy decent pressure relief on the Luxury Firm model. Most heavyweight stomach sleepers will probably require a more supportive mattress.
The Puffy Cloud should offer decent spinal support to heavyweight back sleepers who weigh close to 230lbs. Folks who weigh closer to 300lbs will probably require a mattress with coils. Most heavyweight side sleepers will experience too much pressure around the shoulder and hip. Meanwhile, the Puffy Cloud probably won’t be supportive enough for heavyweight stomach sleepers.
Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130lbs
The Saatva’s Luxury Firm model could be a great fit for lightweight sleepers of all stripes. It offers plenty of support to back and stomach sleepers and should relieve pressure for side sleepers. That said, some side sleepers might prefer the softer Plush Soft model.
The Puffy Cloud should be a good fit for lightweight back and side sleepers, who should enjoy spinal support as well as body contouring. Lightweight stomach sleepers could get enough spinal support on the Puffy Cloud.

Let’s dig beneath the surface of these mattresses to see what they’re really made of. Here’s a close look at each layer of the construction on the Puffy Cloud and the Saatva—plus how different materials impact feel and performance.
Cover
The Saatva’s cover is made from organic cotton, which makes a soft and breathable surface. The cover is tufted and quilted with soft foam to create a pillow-top look and feel.
The Puffy Cloud’s polyester cover is thin, soft, and breathable. Overall, it doesn’t really affect the bed’s performance and feel.
Comfort Layers
The primary comfort layer on the Saatva is the pillow-top that’s quilted into the bed’s cover. Below the pillow-top, there’s a thin layer of memory foam that offers some additional pressure relief.
The Puffy Cloud’s first comfort layer is dubbed Cooling Cloud. It’s made of soft memory foam and has some of the slow-moving feel that’s usually associated with this material. This layer is also infused with a cooling gel to help dissipate heat. Below the Cooling Cloud layer, there’s a Climate Control layer that acts as a transition layer between the softer memory foam and the firmer support foam underneath. This layer is also designed to support cooling.
Support Layers
The Saatva features a unique construction in the form of a dual set of steel coils. First, there’s a layer of smaller microcoils that simultaneously offer support and body contouring. Underneath the microcoils, there’s a layer of thick, high-grade coils that offer excellent support.
The Puffy Cloud has a simpler support layer that consists of a high-density base foam. This material provides overall structure and support.

The Saatva comes in two height options: 11.5” and 14.5”. The Puffy Cloud comes in one firmness option and stands 10” tall.

Sleeping Hot Or Cold
The Saatva is the more cooling mattress. Not only does it have a breathable cover, but its dual layers of coils create tons of room for air to circulate throughout the center of the mattress. This means sleepers shouldn’t overheat.
When it comes to cooling, it’s tough for all-foam beds to compete with innerspring mattresses. This holds true for the Puffy Cloud—it did trap some heat. That said, the cooling gel infusion in the top comfort layer and the breathable cover do help this bed sleep a bit cooler than some all-foam mattresses.
Motion Transfer
The Puffy Cloud wins this category. Its memory foam comfort layer is great at isolating motion and minimizing disturbances across the surface of the mattress. In contrast, the Saatva does not do a good job of absorbing movement. Its bouncy and responsive coils allow disturbances to travel across the mattress.
Edge Support
The Saatva wins out. Its dual layers of coils create excellent edge support, and we felt very secure while sitting and lying down near the edge of this mattress.
The Puffy Cloud features decent edge support; it collapsed a bit when we sat near the edge, but we felt fairly secure while lying near the edge of this bed. Still, the Saatva will offer much stronger edge support overall.
Durability
The Saatva takes another win. The high-grade coils make this a long-lasting mattress that won’t sag for years to come. With proper care, the Saatva should last for at least 7-10 years.
Off-Gassing
The Saatva wins here. Unlike most online mattresses, the Saatva does not arrive rolled up in a cardboard box. Instead, the Saatva company offers free White Glove Delivery, meaning people will remove your old mattress and set up the new mattress in your bedroom. Because it doesn’t spend time rolled up in a box, the Saatva doesn’t off-gas upon arrival. The Puffy Cloud is a more conventional bed-in-a-box, and it will probably emit a slight chemical smell at first. This should dissipate after 48 hours.
Noise
The Puffy Cloud could win here, but only time will tell. During our review, we didn’t observe any significant noise from either of these beds. But because the Saatva contains a lot of coils, it’s possible they could squeak a bit over time. Because the Puffy Cloud is all-foam, it should stay noise-free over the long haul.
Sex
We called this a tie. Both mattresses are responsive, and it should be easy for sexual partners to move around and change positions on both the Saatva and the Puffy Cloud. That said, the bouncier Saatva could make things even easier.
