How Firm Are the Saatva and Lull Mattresses?
We ranked the Luxury Firm model of the Saatva around 7/10 on the firmness scale. The industry standard for average firmness is 6.5/10, so this suggests the Saatva is a bit firmer than medium-firm. The Saatva’s pillow-top is quite soft, but its dual layers of coils keep this bed feeling firmer than average.
We also ranked the Lull around 7/10, or a bit firmer than average. This might be surprising given that the Lull is an all-foam mattress and doesn’t use coils. The comfort layers are soft, but they’re balanced out by the much firmer base foam underneath. Of course, firmness is always a bit subjective—depending on your weight and personal preferences, you might rank these beds a bit differently.
Sleeping on the Saatva and Lull Mattresses (Sleeping Positions)
We personally tested each of these mattresses. Here’s how we felt in every sleeping position on both beds.
Saatva
We enjoyed an excellent balance of comfort and spinal support while back sleeping on the Luxury Firm model of the Saatva. Our hips sank into the pillow-top a bit for some nice pressure relief, but not so far that they pulled the spine out of alignment.
At the same time, we enjoyed nice support from the dual coil layers—including great lumbar support. In fact, we ranked this bed as one of the best mattresses for lower back pain and sciatica as well as one of the best mattresses for arthritis.
While side sleeping on the Saatva’s Luxury Firm model, we enjoyed nice pressure relief around the shoulder and hip. That said, folks who spend all night in this position will probably prefer the softer Plush Soft model.
We also found the Saatva’s Luxury Firm model to be a nice match for stomach sleeping. Our hips felt well supported, and our spine and hips stayed aligned. That said, heavier-weight stomach sleepers will probably prefer the more supportive Firm model or a mattress made for heavy people.
Lull
We felt great while back sleeping on the Lull. The comfort layers allowed us to sink in for some nice pressure relief, while the support foam underneath kept our hips and spine aligned.
In our experience, the Lull felt a bit too firm for side sleeping. We felt some pressure around the shoulder and hip. Side sleepers will definitely want to look for a softer mattress.
We felt well-supported while stomach sleeping on the Lull. That said, heavier-weight stomach sleepers might require a more supportive mattress with coils.
What Do the Saatva and Lull Mattresses Feel Like?
The Saatva has a classic innerspring feel with a plush pillow-top feel on top. The two layers of coils give the mattress quite a bit of bounce, which makes it easy to move around and change positions. Sleepers don’t sink far into the mattress; you’ll feel like you’re sleeping on top of the bed rather than “in” it.
The Lull has a balanced foam feel. The memory foam allows sleepers to sink into the mattress, but the bed is still pretty responsive thanks to the firmer foams underneath. Sleepers shouldn’t feel stuck in this bed.
Average Weight Sleepers – 130lbs – 230lbs
The Saatva’s Luxury Firm model should be a great fit for average-weight back and stomach sleepers, who will enjoy a blend of spinal support and pressure relief. It could also be a fit for average-weight side sleepers, although folks who prefer a plusher feel will probably prefer the Plush Soft model.
The Lull should be well-suited to most average-weight back and stomach sleepers, who should get plenty of support as well as some pressure relief. This mattress will almost certainly feel too firm for average-weight side sleepers.
Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230lbs
Back sleepers who weigh close to 230 pounds should obtain adequate support on the Saatva’s Luxury Firm model. Folks who weigh more than that might want to consider the Firm model or the Saatva HD, which is made for heavy people.
Heavyweight side sleepers should enjoy plenty of pressure relief on the Luxury Firm model of the Saatva; they will compress the coils, enhancing the pressure relief around the shoulders and hips. Most heavyweight stomach sleepers will require a more supportive mattress.
The Lull should be a great match for heavyweight back sleepers, who should enjoy a blend of comfort and support (including nice lumbar support). It will almost certainly feel too firm for heavyweight side sleepers, who will probably press through the softer comfort layers into the firmer support layer underneath.
Heavyweight stomach sleepers won’t get enough support on this mattress; most people in this category will find their hips bow too far into the mattress and tug the spine out of alignment.
Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130lbs
Lightweight sleepers of all stripes could find the Saatva to be a great match. Lightweight back and stomach sleepers will get plenty of spinal support, while lightweight side sleepers should enjoy nice pressure relief. Again, side sleepers who prefer a plusher feel will probably want the Plush Soft model.
The Lull should be a supportive match for lightweight back and stomach sleepers. It’s possible that lightweight side sleepers could enjoy decent pressure relief on this mattress (since they won’t press through the comfort layers), but side sleepers who prefer a plush feel will want to consider a dedicated mattress for side sleepers.
Mattress Construction Differences
Let’s dig deeper into these beds (literally!) with a look beneath the surface. We’ll detail each layer of the Saatva’s and Lull’s construction and share how different materials affect feel and performance.
Cover
The Saatva’s cover is made from organic cotton, which is soft and breathable. The cover is tufted and quilted with soft foam, which gives the Saatva its pillow-top look and feel.
The Lull mattress features a soft and durable cover that allows air to move through the surface of the bed.
Comfort Layers
The Saatva’s primary comfort layer is the pillow-top that’s quilted into the cover. Beneath this pillow-top, there’s a thin layer of memory foam that adds a bit of pressure relief to the top of the mattress. This foam is CertiPUR-US certified, meaning it’s more eco-friendly and low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
The comfort layers are zoned to be a bit firmer in the middle (for extra spinal support) and softer near the edges (for added pressure relief).
The primary comfort layer on the Lull consists of 1.5” of gel-infused memory foam that offers some pressure relief and body contouring. The gel infusion helps dissipate heat. Beneath the memory foam, there’s a 1.5” transition layer made from a firmer foam blend. This layer helps ease the sleeper between the softer memory foam and the firmer support layer underneath.
Both comfort layers are fairly responsive, which accounts for the Lull’s balanced foam feel.
Support Layers
The Saatva features a unique support system in the form of two sets of steel coils. The first layer of coils consists of microcoils that are simultaneously supportive and body contouring. Below the microcoils, there’s a thicker layer of high-grade coils that provide excellent support.
The Lull’s support layer is composed of 7” of polyurethane foam, a high-density material that is durable and supportive. All of the foams in the Lull are CertiPUR-US certified.

The Saatva mattress comes in two height options: 11.5” and 14.5”. The Lull mattress is 10” tall.

Saatva vs. Lull Performance Differences
We ran the Saatva and Lull through a wide range of tests to assess their temperature regulation, motion isolation, edge support, durability, and more. Let’s see how these beds stacked up!
Sleeping Hot or Cold
The Saatva takes the win. It boasts a cooling cover as well as two layers of coils, which create tons of room for air to circulate throughout the mattress. Sleepers shouldn’t overheat on this bed.
As far as all-foam beds go, the Lull does a decent job of sleeping cool. That’s thanks to its breathable cover and the gel infusion in its memory foam. However, it’s tough for all-foam beds to compete with innerspring mattresses when it comes to their cooling abilities.
Motion Transfer
The Lull wins here. During our tests, its memory foam comfort layer did a nice job of absorbing motion and minimizing disturbances across the surface of the mattress. Because the Saatva contains bouncy coils, it didn’t perform very well in this regard. For this reason, the Lull could be the better mattress for couples.
Edge Support
The Saatva wins out, but both mattresses performed well here. Thanks to its dual layers of coils, the Saatva features exceptional edge support. We felt completely secure while sitting and lying down near the edge of the Saatva.
The edges of the all-foam Lull collapsed a bit when we sat and laid down near its perimeter, but we still felt pretty secure.
Durability
The Saatva takes another win. Its high-grade coils make this a very durable mattress that should last for at least seven to 10 years. The Lull is also made with durable materials, but all-foam beds generally degrade a bit faster than innerspring models.
Off-Gassing
The Saatva wins, although both beds performed well. The Saatva does not arrive rolled up in a box, and because it’s had room to breathe during transport it doesn’t really emit a chemical smell. That said, the Lull also had minimal off-gassing thanks to its CertiPUR-US certified foams. (The Saatva also uses CertiPUR-US certified memory foam.)
Noise
The Lull could be the winner here. At the time of our review, we didn’t notice any significant noise from either one of these mattresses. That said, because the Saatva uses coils, it’s possible they could start to squeak a bit down the road.
Sex
Both beds should work well for sex since it’s fairly easy to move around on either mattress. That said, the Saatva will probably be an even better mattress for sex because it’s more responsive than the Lull. Sexual partners shouldn’t have any trouble changing positions on the Saatva.
