Construction Differences/Notes

  • The Loom & Leaf contains high-density memory foams that should be great at contouring. The foam should conform to the precise curves of the body.
  • The multiple layers of memory foam give the Loom & Leaf that classic memory foam feel that is slow-moving and allows people to sink into the mattress.
  • The Purple’s hyper-elastic gel polymer is very unique in that it stays flat and supportive until someone applies enough pressure. When this happens, the gel grid collapses in the specific area where someone has applied the weight.
  • The gel grid makes the Purple a good fit for all three sleeping positions. Since it only collapses under the heavier parts of the body, it should be supportive for back sleepers and stomach sleepers, and pressure relieving when they are on their side.
  • The Purple is a more breathable mattress than the Loom & Leaf. The gel grid promotes quite a bit of airflow, so it should be a more temperature neutral mattress.
  • Both mattresses are very durable and should be great long-lasting investments. The Purple’s hyper-elastic gel polymer shouldn’t sag the way some foams do. The Loom & Leaf features very high-density foams that should also stand up to many years of wear and tear.

Firmness/Feel Differences

In terms of firmness, the Purple felt like a 7/10, and the Loom and Leaf felt close to a 6.5/10. However, people might have a different experience on the Purple depending on their weight. Lighter-weight people might not be heavy enough to really activate the gel grid, so it might feel firmer to them. Heavier people should collapse that gel, so the mattress should feel softer to them.

In my experience, the Purple felt great when I was on my back, as the mattress collapsed under my butt and hips but stayed flat and supportive across the rest of my body. However, when I moved to my side, the mattress felt a bit firm to me. I don’t think I am heavy enough to really activate the gel grid. On my stomach, the mattress supports me quite well.

On the Loom & Leaf, I also feel nice support when I am back sleeping. I don’t sink in too far, and the foam contours to the curves of my body. When I am side sleeping, the mattress feels firm at first. However, after a moment, the memory foam softens and I feel the pressure on my shoulders and hips disappear. Moving to my stomach, the mattress is a bit too soft for me.

The Purple has a unique squishy gel feel that is firm and pressure relieving at the same time. It is responsive and has some very nice bounce to it. Most people shouldn’t have issues moving around on the mattress or switching positions.

The Loom & Leaf, on the other hand, has a classic memory foam feel that feels firm at first, but that memory slowly softens and allows you to sink in. The mattress has no real bounce and the memory foam is not very responsive, so it won’t be as easy to move around on the Loom & Leaf.

See more of what I thought about Purple’s firmness and feel in the video below.

See what I said about the Loom & Leaf’s memory foam feel in the video below.

Motion Transfer Differences

Between the two mattresses, the Loom & Leaf handles motion transfer much better than the Purple, because the Loom & Leaf has thick layers of high-density memory foam, a material known for isolating motion very well.

During my tests, I placed a glass of water on both mattresses. Pressing into each mattress, I saw much less of a disturbance on the Loom & Leaf. Also, I lay down on both mattresses and asked Marten to move around on the other side, and I felt fewer of his movements on the Loom & Leaf.

If someone sleeps with a partner, they shouldn’t be disturbed by their movements on the Loom & Leaf. It should be the best mattress for couples who don’t want to be disturbed by their partner’s movements.

See how the Purple deals with motion transfer in the video below.

Now, compare this to the memory foam Loom & Leaf mattress with the video below.

Edge Support Differences

If someone is looking for a couples mattress, they should also think about how much of the mattress they can really utilize. Can they sit or lie down near the edge without feeling like they will fall off the mattress?

Edge support is not really a highlight of either mattress. I don’t feel secure sitting on the edge of the Purple and, lying down near the edge of both mattresses, I feel a bit like I might roll off.

People can see the edge support differences in the photos below.

Marten’s Take

Marten is a staff writer for us and has a much different body type. He is 6’7″ and weighs about 230 lbs (I am 5’9″ and 160 lbs.). Here is what he thought about these mattresses and how appropriate they are for heavier sleepers:

I said the Loom & Leaf was a 7.5/10, and the Purple was close to a 6.5/10. The main reason I feel differently than Joe has to do with my weight. I am pressing further into the Loom & Leaf and feeling some more firmness than Joe did, but on the Purple, my larger weight collapses the gel grid, which actually makes it feel softer to me.

On the Loom & Leaf, I feel nice support on my back, as my hips sink in just a bit too far, but I am getting good lumbar support. While the mattress does feel firm at first when I am on my side, it does soften up and I feel some decent pressure relief on my shoulders and hips. When I’m on my stomach, the mattress is too soft, and I am bowing in at the hips.

Over on the Purple, I feel great on my back, as the mattress collapses under my butt, but nowhere else. When I am side sleeping, I feel good pressure relief on my shoulders and my hips. When I’m on my stomach, the mattress stays flat and supportive and is an excellent match.

I think both mattresses could work for heavier back and side sleepers. If someone is even larger than me, they should go with the Purple if they sleep on their back or side. Finally, if someone is a heavier stomach sleeper, they should choose the Purple.

Marten’s experience confirms that the Purple should be a good mattress for heavy people. While he also enjoyed side sleeping on the Loom & Leaf, I think he is correct that it might not be a great match for much heavier side sleepers.

Who Should Pick Purple:

  • Those who want a more affordable mattress- The Purple is a few hundred dollars cheaper than the Loom & Leaf and is an excellent overall value. If both mattresses sound like they could be a good fit, choosing the Purple could save people some money.
  • Heavier side sleepers- Larger people should feel very comfortable side sleeping on the Purple. The heavier weight will activate the gel grid, so the mattress should collapse under the shoulders and hips. The pressure relief should be great for heavier sleepers as a result.
  • Hot sleepers- If someone overheats at night, the Purple should work for them. The gel grid allows for a lot of airflow, making this a temperature neutral mattress, so people should have fewer issues sleeping hot on the Purple.
  • Stomach sleepers- While the Loom & Leaf might be too soft when people are on their stomach, the Purple should give them the support they need. The gel grid shouldn’t collapse when they are lying in this position, so they should feel well supported across their whole body.

Who Should Pick Loom & Leaf:

  • Light- or medium-weight side sleepers- Those who sleep on their sides and are on the lighter side should go with the Loom & Leaf, because the memory foam on top relieves pressure quite well. The Purple, on the other hand, might not give people the best pressure relief if they aren’t heavy enough.
  • Those who prefer a classic memory foam feel- If someone likes to slowly sink into their mattress, the Loom & Leaf should be a good choice. It has that slow-moving, quicksand-like feel that comes with memory foam.
  • People who sleep with a partner- The Loom & Leaf should definitely be a better mattress for couples for a number of reason. It has a thick layer of memory foam on top, which handles motion transfer quite well. People should feel less of their partner’s movements on the Loom & Leaf.

RELATED: Which Is The Best Mattress

Overall

If people think about the information provided above, the choice should be easy because the differences are so big. The Purple is better for heavier side sleepers, hot sleepers, and most stomach sleepers. Light- and medium- weight side sleepers and those who sleep with a partner should prefer the Loom & Leaf. Please leave any specific comments or questions about the Purple or the Loom & Leaf in the comment section below.  Consumers should read through this article multiple times, assess their own needs and preferences, and then make a more informed decision.
