As we’ve noted, several factors set these mattresses apart from each other.

  • The Casper Hybrid is thicker than the Purple
  • The Casper Hybrid features coils, while the Purple Original mattress does not
  • They differ quite a bit in terms of construction: The Casper Hybrid features multiple foam layers and a Zoned Support system, while the Purple contains the brand’s proprietary gel grid

  • They feature different materials in their comfort layers: The Casper Hybrid uses foam, while the Purple uses hyper-elastic gel polymer
  • The differences in construction give these mattresses very different feels: The Casper has a balanced foam feel with some bounce from the coils, while the Purple is squishy-yet-firm

Firmness and Feel Differences (Including Firmness Rating)

When it comes to choosing the best mattress for a particular sleeper, firmness and feel are two of the most important factors to consider. Let’s take a closer look at the firmness and feel of the Casper Hybrid and Purple mattresses.

How Firm Are the Casper Hybrid and Purple Mattresses?

We ranked both the Casper Hybrid at a 7/10 and the Purple around a 6.5/10 on the firmness scale. The industry standard for medium firmness is 6.5, so this suggests that both mattresses are right around medium-firm.

That said, firmness is a bit subjective, and people’s perceptions of a bed’s firmness can vary a bit depending on their weight. For instance, the Casper Hybrid might feel softer to lightweight sleepers. Meanwhile, lighter-weight folks might find that the Purple feels firmer to them, because they might not be heavy enough to activate the gel grid.

Sleeping on the Casper Hybrid and Purple Mattresses

Now, let’s take a look at how it feels to actually sleep on the Casper Hybrid and Purple mattresses:

Casper Hybrid

We felt great while back sleeping on the Casper Hybrid. Our hips sank in just a bit for some pressure relief, but we still felt well supported (thanks in large part to the coils). We enjoyed decent spinal support overall, and the lumbar support is especially great thanks to the mattress’s Zoned Support system. We feel more support while back sleeping on the Casper Hybrid than we did on the Purple. This is unsurprising as we often place the Casper mattresses on our list of the best mattress for back sleepers.

Casper Hybrid - Back Sleeping

The Casper Hybrid’s Zoned Support system is designed to make the mattress feel softer when side sleeping. True to form, it did feel softer under our hips. Lighter-weight folks should feel even better pressure relief in this position.

While stomach sleeping on the Casper Hybrid, we felt decent support overall. The mattress’s coils and zoning helped support our core and keep our hips aligned with our spine.

Purple

We found the Purple to be a fantastic match for back sleeping. The gel grid collapses in spots where lots of pressure is applied and stays upright everywhere else. We felt it collapse a bit under our butt and hips, which provided nice pressure relief while the rest of the mattress stayed supportive.

While side sleeping, our heavier-weight tester activated the gel grid so that it collapsed around pressure points and cradled them for nice pressure relief. Lighter-weight folks might not activate the gel grid, so they could find that the Purple feels firmer in this position.

Purple Original Mattress - Side Sleeping

We received the support we needed while stomach sleeping on the Purple. The gel grid did a decent job of supporting the hips and maintaining spinal alignment. It is actually one of the best mattresses for stomach sleepers.

What Do the Casper Hybrid and Purple Mattresses Feel Like?

The Casper Hybrid has a very bouncy, responsive foam feel. Even though the foam does offer some pressure relief, the bounce from the coils means that sleepers shouldn’t sink in and feel stuck. It’s easy to move around on top of this mattress.

The original Purple mattress has a unique feel that’s simultaneously squishy and firm. The gel grid collapses when a lot of pressure is applied and otherwise stays in a supportive, upright position. This is a very responsive and bouncy mattress, so it’s fairly easy to move around on top of the bed.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lbs – 230 lbs

The Casper Hybrid should be a great match for most average-weight back sleepers, as the combination of foam and coils creates a great balance between comfort and support. This balanced feel could also provide adequate pressure relief to average-weight side sleepers and decent overall support for stomach sleepers.

The Purple is well suited to average-weight back sleepers who are on the heavier side of the spectrum. It might feel too firm for folks who are closer to 130 pounds because they probably won’t activate the gel grid enough to obtain decent pressure relief. Same goes for side sleeping: Folks who are on the heavier end of the spectrum should activate the gel grid and enjoy cradling comfort, but sleepers who are on the lighter end might feel that the mattress is too firm in this position. Because of the gel grid’s supportive nature, the Purple should be a great match for average-weight stomach sleepers.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lbs

The Casper Hybrid’s balanced foam feel could be well suited to some heavyweight sleepers; however, folks who weigh much more than 230 pounds will probably need a more supportive mattress. The Casper Hybrid will probably feel too firm for heavyweight side sleepers, who could press through the comfort layers into the firmer support layer underneath. The Casper Hybrid is probably not supportive enough to maintain proper spinal alignment for heavyweight stomach sleepers.

Much like the Casper Hybrid, the Purple could be well suited to heavyweight sleepers who are close to 230 pounds. (Folks who weigh more than that will probably want to look for a more supportive mattress with coils.) The Purple should be a fantastic match for most heavyweight side sleepers, who will activate the gel grid to enjoy nice pressure relief around the shoulder and hip. The Purple’s grid could be supportive enough for heavyweight stomach sleepers who are close to 230 pounds, but much larger people will want to look for a more supportive mattress overall.

RELATED: Best Mattress For Heavy People

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lbs

The Casper Hybrid could be a great match for lightweight sleepers of all stripes. The hybrid construction balances comfort and support for back sleepers; the foam comfort layers and Zoned Support system create nice pressure relief for side sleepers; and the coils and zoning offer plenty of spinal support to stomach sleepers. Lightweight back and side sleepers, especially, will probably prefer the Casper Hybrid to the Purple.

The Purple mattress will likely feel too firm for lightweight back and side sleepers, who won’t activate the gel grid enough to achieve adequate pressure relief. The Purple could be a great match for lightweight stomach sleepers, because the supportive gel grid should keep the hips elevated and aligned with the spine.

Mattress Construction Differences

Now that we know what it feels like to sleep on top of the Casper Hybrid and original Purple mattresses, let’s take a look at what’s inside of these beds. We’ll review each bed’s construction and touch on how different construction elements affect each bed’s performance.

Cover

The Casper Hybrid features a soft and very breathable cover that’s made from recycled bottles. This cover doesn’t really impact the mattress’s overall feel.

The Purple is encased in a SoftFlex cover that is soft, breathable, and stretchy enough to move with the Purple’s gel grid. As with the Casper Hybrid, the cover doesn’t really affect the mattress’s feel.

Comfort Layers

The Casper Hybrid’s top comfort layer is constructed from the brand’s proprietary AirScape foam, which is perforated to allow for airflow. It’s also plush and responsive. Underneath the AirScape foam layer is the Casper Hybrid’s main feature: its Zoned Support system. This layer is constructed from memory foam, but it isn’t just one solid piece. Instead, it’s firmer near the center of the mattress and softer near the head and foot. The idea is to create a firmer and more supportive feel for back and stomach sleepers while offering some pressure relief to side sleepers.

Make sure to see our Casper vs Casper Hybrid mattress comparison.

Casper Hybrid - Construction

The Purple’s top comfort layer consists of 2″ of the brand’s proprietary Purple Grid, which is made from a hyper-elastic gel polymer. As noted above, this grid collapses when enough pressure is applied (to provide pressure relief) and stays upright and supportive everywhere else. Overall, the gel grid’s feel is simultaneously bouncy, squishy, and firm. A thick foam encasement surrounds the top layer and provides extra edge support.

Purple Mattress - Construction And Layers

Support Layer

The Casper Hybrid’s base layer is comprised of pocketed coils, which contribute to the bed’s supportive nature. The coils also allow for airflow through the mattress, which helps prevent overheating.

The Purple features a foam transition layer between the gel grid comfort layer and the support layer beneath. That base layer is comprised of a supportive, high-density foam.

Mattress Height

The Casper Hybrid is 11″ thick, while the Purple is a touch shorter at 9.5″.

Casper Hybrid vs. Purple Performance Differences

We’ve covered the firmness, feel, and construction of the Casper Hybrid and original Purple mattresses. Now, let’s take a look at some key performance metrics. We put both of these mattresses through a range of tests to assess their temperature regulation, motion isolation, edge support, and more. Let’s see how these beds stack up!

Sleeping Hot or Cold

Even though the Casper Hybrid’s coils do promote airflow, the Purple is the winner here. Its gel grid is very breathable and creates a temperature neutral sleeping surface.

Motion Transfer

The Casper Hybrid wins this category. The memory foam in the hybrid mattress’s second layer absorbs motion and helps minimize movement across the bed. That combined with the fact that the Casper Hybrid suits multiple sleeping positions could make this a great mattress for couples. Because the Purple’s gel grid is bouncy and responsive, it doesn’t perform as well when it comes to motion transfer.

Edge Support

This is too close to call, so we’re dubbing it a tie. The Casper Hybrid’s coils help shore up its edge support, while the Purple features an extra foam encasement around the perimeter of its comfort layer. Overall, both mattresses offer decent edge support.

Casper Hybrid - Edge Support

Durability

The Purple has a slight edge here. The gel grid is remarkably durable, so this should be a long-lasting mattress that won’t sag. That said, the Casper Hybrid’s coils also make it a durable mattress.

Off-Gassing

We didn’t notice any off-gassing from the Purple mattress. We did notice a bit of off-gassing from the Casper Hybrid, but this dissipated within 48 hours.

Noise

This is a tie. We didn’t observe any notable noise from either mattress. Because the Casper Hybrid has coils, there’s a chance it could start to squeak down the line, but we didn’t observe any noise from the coils at the time of writing.

Sex

When people seek out a mattress for sex, they’re usually looking for a bed that won’t make them feel stuck. Based on that criterion, both the Casper Hybrid and the Purple could be a good match. They’re bouncy and responsive mattresses, and it’s easy to move around on top of either bed.

Warranty Info

Both the Casper Hybrid and the original Purple come with the same warranty terms: a 10-year warranty and a 100-night sleep trial.
