Firmness and Feel Differences
Firmness and feel are two things you should definitely consider when shopping for a new mattress. These can really determine which mattress is going to work best for your situation.
How Firm Are the Avocado Eco Organic and Purple Mattresses?
My colleague and I both tested out these mattresses to see exactly how firm they are. We felt like the Avocado Eco Organic is definitely a firmer mattress overall. On a scale of 1-10, 6.5 is the industry standard for medium-firm. We felt like the Avocado was close to 7.5, about a point over medium-firm. The Dunlop latex is a dense, supportive material and makes the top of the mattress feel quite firm.
In our experience, the Purple felt softer. We thought it was close to 6.5, around medium-firm. The gel grid on top felt firm at first, but when we press in, it collapses quickly under the pressure.
Sleeping On The Avocado Eco Organic and Purple Mattresses
It felt decent back sleeping on the Avocado Eco Organic mattress. While it is on the firmer side, it allows the hips to sink in just a bit.
Side sleeping, the Avocado Eco Organic felt too firm. It doesn’t do the best job of relieving pressure on the shoulders and hips. I experienced some pressure buildup in those areas and could see this causing pain over time.
Stomach sleeping, the Avocado Eco Organic is great Stomach sleepers usually want to opt for a firmer mattress, so it is no surprise that the Avocado works so well in this position.
Back sleeping on the Purple is really comfortable. The gel grid collapses only under the hips and butt while staying flat and supportive under the rest of the body. That gel grid offers the perfect balance of comfort and support that back sleepers should be looking for.
Side sleeping, the Purple also offers excellent pressure relief. It really collapses under the shoulders and hips, taking away pretty much any pressure in those areas.
When stomach sleeping, the Purple is also a great match. It stays flat and supportive under the entire body, offering excellent support.
What Do The Avocado Eco Organic and Purple Mattresses Feel Like?
While the Avocado Eco Organic and Purple are both responsive mattresses, they still feel different. The Avocado features that classic latex mattress feel that is dense and springy. This makes it very easy to move around on the mattress.
The Purple is bouncy as well, but its feel is very unique. It has a squishy gel-like feel that is also somewhat firm. The mattress feels firm until you apply enough pressure. Then, that specific area of the gel grid will collapse without affecting the rest of the mattress. There’s really nothing else like it!
Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lbs – 230 lbs
Average weight back sleepers will most likely prefer the Purple mattress over the Avocado Eco Organic. They might feel like the Avocado is too firm and could push their hips up and out of alignment. If they are close to 130 lbs, both mattresses might feel too firm.
Side sleeping, those over 200 lbs are going to want to go with the Purple mattress. The gel grid should offer better pressure relief than the Avocado. Those under 200 lbs might feel like these mattresses are too firm for side sleeping. Lighter weights might not activate the gel grid, so it could feel firmer.
Stomach sleeping, average weight sleepers should feel well-supported on both mattresses. That being said, strict stomach sleepers might want to go with the Avocado as it is firmer and features coils as well.
Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lbs
Heavyweight back sleepers who are closer to 230 lbs should feel comfortable on both of these mattresses. However, those over 300 lbs might want to look at a mattress for heavy people.
The Avocado Eco Organic will probably feel too firm for heavyweight side sleepers, but the Purple should feel nice for side sleepers closer to 230 lbs. Heavyweight side sleepers who weigh over 300 lbs should consider the Purple Hybrid Premier.
Heavyweight stomach sleepers who don’t weigh much over 250 lbs should get the support they need on the Avocado Eco Organic. If they’re over 300 lbs, a more supportive mattress will probably be necessary.
Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lbs
Lightweight back and side sleepers will probably find that the Avocado Eco Organic and Purple are too firm for them. Unless they have a strong preference for firm mattresses, they should look for a softer hybrid mattress. Lightweight side sleepers should get the necessary support on both mattresses.

Cover
The Avocado Eco Organic mattress features an organic cotton cover that is soft and very breathable as well. Right beneath it is a layer of organic wool that adds some plushness to the top of the mattress.
The Purple features a SoftKnit cover that is thin and breathable too. It lets you interact with the gel grid very easily.
Comfort Layers
The main comfort layer of the Avocado Eco Organic is a thick piece of Dunlop latex. This is an eco-friendly organic material that is durable, bouncy, and breathable.
The Purple features a proprietary gel grid that is firm and pressure relieving at the same time. It also leaves plenty of room for air to pass through, making it a good cooling material.
Support Layers
In its support layer, Avocado Eco Organic contains supportive coils made from recycled steel. This allows a lot of room for airflow in the bottom part of the mattress.
The Purple features supportive base foam, but there are Purple models that do have coils in their construction.

Avocado Eco Organic And Purple Performance Differences
We put the Avocado Eco Organic and Purple through the paces to see how they performed with regard to cooling, durability, and other criteria.
Sleeping Hot or Cold
These are both very breathable mattresses, but the Purple wins out when it comes to cooling. Its gel grid helps make the top of the mattress much more breathable so that it traps almost no body heat. We did not heat up on either mattress, but we can say we slept cooler on the Purple.
Motion Transfer
Motion transfer is a big consideration if you sleep with a partner. If a mattress doesn’t cut down on motion transfer, your partner’s nocturnal movements could disturb your sleep.
Neither mattress does an amazing job of cutting down on motion transfer, but the Purple performed just a bit better during our tests. Still, you should take a look at one of our best mattresses for couples if you want a better option.
Edge Support
Couples and those who want to use the entire surface area of their mattress should also think about edge support. A mattress with solid edge support can ensure you can sleep and sit all the way toward the edge of your mattress.
We’ve got good news because both the Avocado Eco Organic and Purple have great edge support. I felt very well-supported near the edge of both mattresses.
Durability
Durability is sometimes hard to gauge, but you can deduce a lot based on what materials are in a mattress. Looking at the Avocado Eco Organic and Purple mattresses, they both seem equally durable. The Avocado’s latex and Purple’s gel grid are high-density materials that should last for a number of years without sagging.
Off-Gassing
Off-gassing usually occurs when you are unboxing a mattress that contains polyfoam or memory foam. The chemicals found in these materials give off a strong scent when they are taken out of their packaging.
Latex mattresses rarely have this issue, and we did not experience any off-gassing with the Avocado. The Purple does feature foam in its support layers, but we also didn’t notice a strong chemical smell after unboxing it.
Noise
Neither of these mattresses made a significant amount of noise when we were moving around on them. However, the Avocado Eco Organic mattress might start to creak over time as the coils start to weaken.
Sex
Those who want the best mattress for sex usually need something more responsive. The Avocado Eco Organic and Purple are both very bouncy, making it easy for sexual partners to move around.
