  • Avocado incorporates coils and is a bit more durable than the Tuft & Needle.
  • Avocado conforms better to the curves of the body.
  • Avocado is thicker than the Tuft & Needle. (It comes in 11″ and 13″ models, while Tuft & Needle comes only in a 10″ model.)

Avocado Construction

  • Avocado’s top layer is made of natural Dunlop latex – this foam from a natural material is one of Avocado’s unique features, and it provides pressure relief and bounce.
  • Consumers have the option of adding a pillow-top on top of the first foam layer; with the pillow-top, the mattress is 13″ thick, which is 2″ thicker than the non-pillow-top model.
  • The base support layer is comprised of individually wrapped coils – these coils are zoned to provide extra support where people need it most, and they make the mattress extra strong and supportive for sleepers who weigh more.
  • The mattress has a 100 percent organic cotton cover that doesn’t affect the overall feel of the mattress significantly.

avocado vs tuft & needle construction comparison

Tuft & Needle Construction

  • The Tuft & Needle is comprised of only two polyfoam layers.
  • On top is 3″ of proprietary “Adaptive” foam — a polyurethane-based foam that blends in graphite to absorb heat from the body and a gel polymer to distribute the heat. This firm, bouncy layer helps ensure even cooling and mixes in memory foam and latex qualities into one foam layer.
  • The support layer is  7″ of 1.8 lb density poly foam, which is pretty standard amongst bed-in-a-box mattresses.
  • Tuft & Needle has a breathable cover made of a polyester blend that is very thin and doesn’t affect the feel of the mattress too much.

Construction Differences and Notes

  • Tuft & Needle is all-foam and has a much simpler construction than the Avocado.
  • Avocado has coils in the support layer
  • Avocado has an optional pillow-top, but the Tuft & Needle does not
  • Avocado uses natural materials, including Dunlop processed latex.
  • Both are relatively firm, but the Tuft & Needle is a little firmer.

Firmness and Feel Differences

Both are firm, but Avocado has a little more give and will conform a little better to the shape of the body.

Motion Transfer Differences

Because both are fairly firm, these aren’t the best at preventing movement from traveling across the mattress, and this is something for couples to consider. That being said, they do an okay job.

For more information on how these mattresses stack up to other competition, it should be helpful to check out our other popular Avocado and Tuft & Needle comparisons like Avocado vs Leesa and Tuft & Needle vs Loom & Leaf.

The Avocado Should Work for

  • Side sleepers. Avocado conforms better to the shape of the body, and if one adds the pillow-top it gives a little more softness to the surface.
  • Those who want a mattress that lasts. Avocado uses higher quality materials and contains coils, so it should be a longer-lasting mattress.

The Tuft & Needle Should Work for

  • Those who are on a budget. It’s hard to find a quality mattress that costs less than Tuft & Needle. If price is a concern, people may prefer this all-foam option.
  • People who want a no-frills mattress. Maybe this will go in a guest bedroom or someone is looking to furnish a short-term rental. If someone is looking for something temporary or that won’t get a lot of use, Tuft & Needle is a great option.
