Firmness and Feel Differences (Including Firmness Rating)
If you’re hunting for a new mattress, then firmness and feel should be at the top of your list of considerations. These factors will play a major role in determining whether a given mattress is matched to your sleep preferences. So let’s get into the meat of this comparison by taking a look at the firmness and feel on the original Purple and the Amerisleep AS3!
How Firm Are the Amerisleep and Purple Mattresses?
We ranked both the Amerisleep AS3 and the original Purple mattress around a 6.5/10 on the firmness scale. The industry standard for medium firmness is 6.5/10, so this suggests both mattresses are right around medium firm. Again, note that the Amerisleep line includes four other models in different firmnesses.
It’s also important to note that firmness is a bit subjective. A person’s body weight will influence how firm or soft they perceive a mattress to be, so just be aware that these ratings aren’t an exact science.
Sleeping on the Amerisleep and Purple Mattresses
We got to spend a good amount of time on both mattresses. We rolled around and tried them out in every sleeping position:
Purple
We felt fantastic while back sleeping on the Purple. The Purple Grid collapsed a bit under our butt for some pressure relief and stayed upright everywhere else to support spinal alignment.
While side sleeping on the Purple, we activated the gel grid so that it collapsed under the shoulder and hip to provide cradling relief. However, note that lighter-weight side sleepers might not activate the grid and could find the bed to be too firm in this position.
We enjoyed plenty of support while stomach sleeping on the Purple. The gel grid kept our hips elevated and in line with the spine.
Amerisleep
We felt great while back sleeping on the Amerisleep AS3. The Bio-Pur foam provided a touch of pressure relief without sacrificing spinal support.
We also felt decent while sleeping on our side, as the Bio-Pur foam offered some body contouring around the shoulder and hip. That said, heavier-weight people or people who prefer a plusher feel will find greater pressure relief on the softer Amerisleep AS4 or AS5.
We found the Amerisleep AS3 to be too soft for stomach sleeping. People who spend all night in this position will probably want to seek out a firmer mattress, such as the Amerisleep AS1.
What Do the Purple and Amerisleep Mattresses Feel Like?
The Amerisleep AS3 features some memory foam, so it has a slightly slow-moving feel. That said, we didn’t feel stuck in this bed. It’s not especially bouncy, but it’s still pretty easy to move around on top.
The original Purple mattress has a unique feel that is simultaneously squishy and firm. That’s thanks to the gel grid, which collapses when enough pressure is applied (for pressure relief) and stays upright everywhere else (for support). This grid is bouncy and responsive.
Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lbs – 230 lbs
Most average-weight back sleepers should find a pleasant balance of comfort and support on the Purple. However, note that folks who weigh closer to 130 pounds might find that the mattress feels too firm while back sleeping as well as side sleeping. People who weigh more than 200 pounds are likely to enjoy the Purple while side sleeping, because they’ll be heavy enough to collapse the gel grid around their pressure points and enjoy pressure relief. The Purple’s supportive nature should make it a great match for average-weight stomach sleepers.
The Amerisleep AS3 should offer a nice balance of comfort and support to average-weight back sleepers. Side sleepers who weigh less than 200 pounds will probably enjoy more pressure relief on the Amerisleep AS3 than they would on the Purple. Because it’s more body contouring, the Amerisleep AS3 might not be supportive enough for average-weight stomach sleepers.
Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lbs
The Purple could be a great match for heavyweight sleepers of all stripes. Heavyweight back sleepers are likely to enjoy a mixture of spinal support and pressure relief, while heavyweight side sleepers will collapse the gel grid to enjoy cradling support around the shoulder and hip. (Folks who weigh more than 300 pounds will enjoy even more pressure relief on the Purple Hybrid Premier.) Many heavyweight stomach sleepers will find adequate support on the Purple, but folks who weigh more than 300 pounds might want to look for a more supportive mattress overall.
The Amerisleep AS3 should offer heavyweight back sleepers a balance of comfort and support. Heavyweight side sleepers will probably prefer the weightless feeling that they’ll find on the Purple; they could press through the Amerisleep AS3’s comfort layer and into the firmer support layer underneath, making the mattress feel too firm in this position. The Amerisleep AS3 is not supportive enough for heavyweight stomach sleepers.
Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lbs
Lightweight back and side sleepers will probably find that the Purple feels too firm in these positions, because they won’t be heavy enough to collapse the gel grid and activate pressure relief. The supportive nature of the Purple should be well-matched to lightweight stomach sleepers.
The Amerisleep AS3 should be a better match for lightweight sleepers overall. It offers comfort and support while back sleeping and pressure relief while side sleeping. However, it might not be supportive enough for lightweight stomach sleepers.
Mattress Construction Differences
Now that you know what it feels like to sleep on top of the Amerisleep AS3 and original Purple mattresses, let’s take a look beneath the surface. We’ll compare each layer of these mattresses’ constructions and assess how different materials influence performance.
Cover
The Purple is encased in a SoftFlex cover that is thin, breathable, and flexible enough to move with the mattress’ gel grid.
The Amerisleep AS3 features a Refresh Cooling Cover, which is designed to feel cool to the touch and improve circulation.
Comfort Layers
The original Purple’s primary comfort layer consists of 2” of the brand’s proprietary Purple Grid. The grid is made from a hyper-elastic gel polymer that remains firm and supportive until enough pressure is applied in a specific area, at which point the grid collapses for some pressure relief. A strong foam layer encases the edges of the Purple Grid to strengthen the mattress’s edge support. Below the Purple Grid, there’s a layer of soft, responsive foam that adds some pressure relief to the top of the mattress.
The Amerisleep AS3’s top comfort layer is made from 3” of Bio-Pur foam—an open-celled foam that is more breathable and bouncier than conventional memory foam. The added bounce means that sleepers shouldn’t feel stuck in this bed. Each model in the Amerisleep mattress line has different amounts of Bio-Pur foam; the AS1 is the thinnest, while the AS5 has the most. Beneath the Bio-Pur foam layer, there’s a HIVE Transition layer with a zoned construction that subtly modulates the firmness of the mattress so it’s softer in some areas and firmer in others.
Support Layer
The Purple’s support layer consists of a firm base foam that provides overall structure and support for the mattress.
The Amerisleep AS3’s support layer is made from a Bio-Core foam base layer that is high-density and supportive.
Mattress Height
The Amerisleep AS3 is 12″ thick, while the Purple is shorter at 9.5″.

Purple vs. Amerisleep Performance Differences
We’re almost to the end of this review, but there are a few more critical performance indicators to assess! We tested the Amerisleep AS3 and Purple with regards to temperature regulation, motion transfer, edge support, and more. To see how these two models compare to other brands, check out our mattress comparisons page for other popular comparisons like Purple vs Saatva and Amerisleep vs Casper.
Sleeping Hot Or Cold
The Purple is the winner here. Its breathable cover and temperature-neutral gel grid mean that this mattress shouldn’t overheat.
Motion Transfer
The Amerisleep AS3 takes the win. Its thick foam comfort layer does a decent job of absorbing motion. In contrast, the Purple’s bouncy gel grid doesn’t do much to minimize motion transfer. Keep this in mind if you’re searching for a mattress for couples.
Edge Support
Both mattresses boast decent edge support, but we’re giving the win to the Purple. That’s thanks to the foam encasement around the edges of the Purple Grid, which helped us feel extra secure while sitting down or lying near the mattress’s edge.
Durability
Both mattresses should be durable, but the Purple ekes out a win. The hyper-elastic gel polymer is an especially durable material, and this mattress shouldn’t sag.
Off-Gassing
We did observe some off-gassing from the Amerisleep AS3, but this should dissipate within a couple of days. We did not observe off-gassing from the Purple.
Noise
We called this a tie. We didn’t observe any notable noise from either mattress.
Sex
If you’re looking for a mattress for sex, that probably means you want a mattress that makes it easy to change positions. The Purple is the winner in this case, because its bouncy and responsive gel grid makes it especially easy to move around on top of the mattress.
Warranty Info
The Amerisleep AS3 comes with a 100-night sleep trial and a 20-year warranty, while the Purple comes with a 100-night sleep trial and a 10-year warranty.
