Emma Hybrid Comfort Mattress Review: General Overview
Emma is an online mattress brand hailing from our neighbor to the North, Canada. The bed-in-a-box brand currently offers three mattress models: the Emma Original, Emma Hybrid Comfort and the Emma Shift. While I have yet to review the Emma Shift, I tried the Emma Original mattress for myself. I thought it was a streamlined all-foam mattress that offered some impressive cooling features.
Now, the Emma Hybrid Comfort is no streamlined mattress. It features layers upon layers of different types of foam, extra-supportive coils and some cooling materials as well. I tested the mattress and, while it wasn’t comfortable in every position, it definitely didn’t lack support.
Pros of the Emma Comfort Hybrid
- The Emma Hybrid Comfort is supportive enough for heavier people. Its zoned coils are up to the challenge and should handle weights in excess of 300 lb. Also, its high-density foams shouldn’t sag under this weight.
- It sleeps very cool. The Emma Hybrid’s cover and foams are all designed to dissipate heat, and its coils promote airflow through the bottom of the mattress. In my experience, it didn’t trap heat and kept me nice and cool.
- It will work well for fans of firm mattresses. This bed scored way higher than medium-firm on our firmness scale. If you like something firmer-than-firm, the Emma Comfort Hybrid is where it’s at.
Cons of the Emma Comfort Hybrid
- You don’t get real contouring with the Emma Hybrid Comfort. If you’re used to lying down and slowly sinking into a memory foam mattress, this bouncy bed won’t be for you.
- Side sleepers, keep on walking. This bed is extremely firm and won’t give you the pressure relief you need for this position. I felt some bunching up around my shoulders and hips when I tried side sleeping on the Emma Hybrid Comfort.
- It’s too firm for most lightweight people. Unless they just sleep on their stomachs, lightweight people who weigh less than 130 lb will want to find a softer mattress.

Let’s get into the nitty-gritty details of the Emma Hybrid Comfort, starting with its firmness and feel.
How Firm is the Emma Hybrid Comfort Mattress?
On a scale of 1-10, the Emma Hybrid Comfort scored an 8/10. 6.5/10 is the industry standard for medium-firm, and the Emma Hybrid Comfort was significantly firmer. While it features many layers of foam on top, they didn’t offer too much give.
The mattress is also zoned, so it is supposed to feel firmer and softer in certain parts of the mattress. However, when I lay on the mattress, I only felt one consistent firmness.
Sleeping on the Emma Hybrid Comfort
I started out back sleeping on the Emma Hybrid Comfort. Because I weigh more than 270 lb, my weight was enough to compress the top layers of the mattress just a bit. I personally felt comfortable in this position, but back sleepers who like their hips to sink in more or simply prefer a softer feel will want to look elsewhere.
Side sleeping felt very uncomfortable on the Emma Hybrid Comfort. Side sleepers usually want to find a softer mattress to relieve pressure on their shoulders and hips. Lying on the Emma Hybrid Comfort, I felt serious pressure in those areas.
However, when I flipped onto my stomach, the Emma Hybrid Comfort worked like a charm. The mattress did not collapse under my pelvis, which is a common issue for me on mattresses. I got good support under my center mass and across my entire body.
What Does the Emma Hybrid Comfort Feel Like?
The Emma Hybrid Comfort has a bouncy, hybrid feel. The coils provide a good deal of bounce, and the top foam layers pop back into place very quickly. I had no issues moving around or changing positions on this mattress.

Now, I’d like to peel back the cover and discuss what’s going on inside the Emma Hybrid Comfort.
Cover
Right on top of the mattress, there is a thin, soft cover. It is designed to be moisture-wicking and to keep you from getting night sweats. As I will get to below, the cover is effective at keeping the top of the mattress cool.
Comfort Layers
The Emma Hybrid Comfort features three comfort layers made of different types of foam. First off, on top, there is a layer of the brand’s proprietary Breezy Airgocell foam. Like the top cover, it is meant to draw heat away from your body and help it dissipate.
Below that, a layer of memory foam is meant to add more pressure relief to the top of the mattress. As I said above, I’m not sure how effective this material is, as it doesn’t soften the mattress or add a memory foam feel.
Finally, a layer of HRX foam adds some more bounce to the mattress and also acts as a transition layer. It keeps you from sinking too far into the mattress.
Support Layers
The mattress contains individually-wrapped coils with seven zones. This is meant to keep your spine in good neutral alignment while you sleep. Again, I couldn’t feel these distinct zones, but support was not an issue overall.
All of the top layers rest on a layer of base foam. This also keeps the coils from damaging your mattress or foundation.

I ran the Emma Hybrid Comfort through even more tests to see how it performed.
Sleeping Hot or Cold
The Emma Hybrid Comfort is designed to be a cooling mattress, and it did not disappoint. Sleeping on the mattress, I didn’t have any issues with overheating. I wouldn’t say that it was cool to the touch, but I didn’t wake up hot and sweaty.
Motion Transfer
Motion transfer is something that you want to think about if you sleep with a partner. If they move around on their side of the mattress, will this motion transfer to your side? Or, does the mattress cut down on this motion transfer?
Thankfully, I didn’t see any serious motion transfer on the Emma Hybrid Comfort. I placed a glass of water on one side of the mattress and then pushed into the other side. I saw very little disturbance in the water. I also lay on one side of the mattress while my coworker moved around on the opposite side. I was not disturbed whatsoever, so this should be a good mattress for couples.
Edge Support
Edge support is also something that couples want to keep in mind when getting a mattress. A mattress with good edge support will let you and your partner sleep all the way toward the edge. Without good edge support, you’ll be stuffed together at the center of the mattress.
The Emma Hybrid Comfort has great edge support. With its tall, supportive coils, it held me up when I sat and lay down near the edge. I could sleep comfortably toward the edge without rolling off.
Durability
Durability is always hard to gauge, given that I am unable to review a mattress for its entire lifespan. However, I can give an estimate based on what I know about mattress construction and materials.
Looking at the Emma Hybrid Comfort, it should last for at least seven years. It features high grade coils and high-density foams as well. However, make sure to rotate your mattress regularly and keep it clean to get the most out of it.
Off-gassing
The Emma Comfort Hybrid is a bed-in-a-box mattress, and like most bed-in-a-box mattresses, it will off-gas when you open it up. When I unboxed the mattress, it let off that familiar chemical smell. However, after I left the mattress alone for a few days, the smell went away.
Noise
The Emma Comfort Hybrid made no noise when I rolled around on top of it. This is normal for a newer coil mattress, but keep in mind that hybrids may start to squeak after you have had them for a few years. If you’re really worried about noise, an all-foam mattress is always a better option.
Sex
If you want a good mattress for sex, you should get a bouncier mattress. This will make it easier for you and your partner to move around.
With this in mind, the Emma Hybrid Comfort should be a good mattress for sex as it features multiple responsive layers. You and your partner should never feel stuck in this mattress.

You get a 10-year warranty with the Emma Hybrid Comfort. This covers any manufacturing defects as long as you don’t purposefully damage or mistreat the mattress. This means that you have to pair the mattress with a flat, supportive base. But, if you simply don’t like the feel of the mattress anymore, and it is not defective, you won’t be able to return it.

Emma offers a competitive 365-night sleep trial with this mattress. This gives you an entire year to decide if the mattress is right for you. However, the brand asks that you try the mattress for at least three weeks before deciding to return.
