Firmness And Feel Differences (Including Firmness Rating)
Alright, now that we have a general sense of the similarities and differences between these two mattresses, let’s take a closer look at each bed’s firmness and feel.
How Firm Are The Puffy Cloud And Puffy Lux Mattresses?
We ranked the original Puffy Cloud around a 7/10 on the firmness scale, and we put the Puffy Lux at a 6.5/10. The industry standard for medium firmness is 6.5, so this means the Puffy is a touch firmer than medium-firm while the Puffy Lux is right around medium firm.
Note that firmness can be a bit subjective; depending on a person’s weight, they might assess the feel of these beds a bit differently.
Sleeping On The Puffy Cloud And Puffy Lux Mattresses
Now let’s discuss what it feels like to sleep on the Puffy Cloud and Puffy Lux mattresses.
Puffy Cloud
While back sleeping on the Puffy Cloud, we experienced a pleasant balance of comfort and support. The memory foam layer on top offers some pressure relief, while the firmer foam layers underneath help support spinal alignment.
Moving to our side, we experienced some pressure around the shoulder and hip, but lighter-weight people might feel better pressure relief here.
The Puffy Cloud feels a bit too soft for stomach sleeping – our hips bowed in a bit, which throws the spine out of alignment and can lead to back pain. With the exception of lightweight folks, strict stomach sleepers will probably want to look for a more supportive mattress.
Puffy Lux
As with the Puffy Cloud, we felt both support and comfort while back sleeping on the Puffy Lux. The Puffy Lux offers more contouring and pressure relief in this position compared to the Puffy Cloud.
We also experienced better pressure relief while side sleeping on the Puffy Lux; the multiple layers of softer foams help cradle the shoulder and hip, which are common hot spots for side sleepers.
While stomach sleeping on the Puffy Lux, we didn’t feel quite enough support, and our hips sank into the mattress and pulled the spine out of alignment. Strict stomach sleepers will likely need a firmer mattress.
What Do The Puffy Cloud And Puffy Lux Mattresses Feel Like?
The original, all-foam Puffy Cloud mattress has a balanced foam feel with just a bit of that memory foam feel on top. The memory foam comfort layer offers some contouring and pressure relief, but sleepers shouldn’t feel stuck in the bed – it’s not too hard to move around on top of this mattress thanks to the firmer foam layers beneath the comfort layer.
The Puffy Lux has more of a classic memory foam feel – it contours the body and has a slow response to pressure. For this reason, it’s not as easy to move around on top of the mattress.
See our list of the best memory foam mattresses.
Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lbs – 230 lbs
Average-weight back sleepers should find a balance of comfort and support on the Puffy Cloud. Side sleepers might find there’s not enough pressure relief around the shoulder and/or hip. And the Puffy Cloud might not be supportive enough for average-weight stomach sleepers, though it could suit some folks on the lighter end of the spectrum.
The Puffy Lux should work well for average-weight back sleepers who like plenty of body contouring along with spinal support. Side sleepers will also find more pressure relief on this mattress than they would on the Puffy Cloud. However, the Puffy Lux is probably not supportive enough for stomach sleeping.
Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lbs
Folks who are closer to 230 pounds should find enough support while back sleeping on the Puffy Cloud (people who weigh much more than that will likely need a more supportive mattress with coils). Heavyweight side sleepers are likely to press through the Puffy’s comfort layer into the firmer support layers underneath, which means they probably won’t get adequate pressure relief. Similarly, the Puffy Cloud is probably not supportive enough for heavyweight stomach sleepers.
As with the Puffy Cloud, heavyweight back sleepers who are closer to 230 pounds could get enough support on the Puffy Lux (folks who weigh more than that will probably want to look for a bed with coils). The Puffy Lux offers better pressure relief to heavyweight side sleepers, but it still might feel too firm for some folks in this category. Heavyweight stomach sleepers will want to look for a more supportive mattress, as they’re unlikely to find enough support on the Puffy Lux.
See our top picks for the best mattress for heavy people.
Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lbs
Lightweight back sleepers should find a balance of comfort and support on the Puffy Cloud. When it comes to side sleeping, lightweight folks might get enough pressure relief on the Puffy Cloud, but they’ll find more relief on the Puffy Lux. Thanks to its firm support layers, the Puffy Cloud might be supportive enough for lightweight stomach sleepers.
The Puffy Lux should offer lightweight back sleepers body contouring and spinal support. Lightweight side sleepers will likely enjoy some nice pressure relief on the Puffy Lux. Strict stomach sleepers will probably want to look for a firmer mattress, as the Puffy Lux’s soft layers might not be supportive enough to promote spinal alignment.

Mattress Construction Differences
We now know what it’s like to sleep on top of the Puffy Cloud and Puffy Lux. Next, let’s take a deep dive into these mattresses’ innards to compare their constructions from the inside out.
Cover
The Puffy Cloud’s polyester cover is thin, stretchy, and breathable, and the same goes for the Puffy Lux – they feature a thin, breathable, and soft cover that doesn’t affect the overall feel of the mattress.
Comfort Layers
The Puffy Cloud’s main comfort layer is a Cooling Cloud layer with a slow-moving, memory foam feel (it’s also infused with gel to help with cooling). Below this layer, there’s a Climate Comfort transition layer that is firmer and more responsive than the memory foam layer above. This layer adds some bounce to the mattress so sleepers don’t feel stuck when they try to move around.
Like the Puffy Cloud, the Puffy Lux’s first comfort layer is a Cooling Cloud layer with a slow-moving feel and a gel infusion that helps with cooling. Beneath this, there’s a Plush Dual Cloud layer that really sets the Puffy Lux apart – this layer softens the mattress and provides nice body contouring and pressure relief. Below this, there’s a Climate Comfort transition layer that’s firmer, more responsive, and adds some bounce to the top of the mattress.
Support Layer
The Puffy Cloud’s Firm Core Support base layer is a firm-set, high-density layer of foam that adds durability and overall support to the mattress (the brand says this layer is unique to its mattresses).
The all-foam Puffy Lux also features a Firm Core Support base layer with the same construction found on the Puffy Cloud.
Mattress Height
The Puffy Cloud is 10″ tall, while the Puffy Lux is a bit thicker at 12″. The Puffy Lux’s Plush Dual Cloud layer accounts for its extra height.

Puffy Cloud Vs Puffy Lux Performance Differences
We put the Puffy Cloud and Puffy Lux through a range of tests to see how these beds stack up when it comes to motion transfer, edge support, temperature regulation, and more – let’s see how they performed!
Sleeping Hot Or Cold
We called this a tie – because both mattresses are all-foam, expect them to trap some heat. Both the Puffy Cloud and the Puffy Lux feature gel infusions to help with cooling, but foam simply isn’t the most breathable material.
Motion Transfer
The Puffy Lux wins out here because, thanks to its plusher memory foam layers, it absorbs movement well and helps minimize motion transfer across the mattress. This could make it a decent mattress for couples.
Edge Support
The Puffy Lux has a slight edge (pun intended!) here – it feels a touch more supportive around the edges of the mattress.
Durability
The Puffy Lux ekes out another win here because it’s simply more substantial than the original Puffy. Expect it to last for approximately seven years or more – see our list of the best mattresses that won’t sag.
Off-Gassing
We’re calling this a tie; we observed some off-gassing from both mattresses, but this dissipated after 48 hours.
Noise
Another tie – we didn’t observe any significant noise from either mattress, and this could be a boon for folks who share a bed with a restless partner.
Sex
When people look for a mattress for sex, they’re usually concerned about whether they’ll feel stuck in the mattress. For that reason, we ranked the Puffy Cloud as the winner in this category – it’s bouncier and more responsive than the Puffy Lux, which makes it easier to move around.
Warranty Info
Both the Puffy Cloud and Puffy Lux come with a lifetime warranty and a 101-night sleep trial.
