Overall, the Layla and Casper are very different mattresses. Let’s get into the specifics now:

Firmness and Feel Differences
When you are shopping for a new mattress, firmness and feel should be top of mind. Read on to see how the Layla and Casper compare.
How Firm are the Layla and Casper Mattresses?
As mentioned above, the Layla mattress has two firmness levels. The soft side is close to a 6/10, a bit softer than average. The firm side feels like an 8/10, firmer than average.
The Casper is right in the middle, around 7/10. This is just a tad firmer than average on our firmness scale. I would note that, because of the Zoned Support, the mattress might feel firmer or softer depending on your sleeping position. Specifically, the Casper could feel firmer when you are back and stomach sleeping and softer when you are side sleeping.
Sleeping On the Casper and Layla Mattresses
Starting off on the soft side of the Layla, it is not the best mattress for back sleeping. I don’t feel enough lumbar support, and I feel like I am dipping into the mattress somewhat. That being said, side sleeping is a dream on the soft side of the Layla. The thick layer of memory foam is relieving a good deal of buildup around my pressure points. The soft side is not giving me enough support for stomach sleeping, however.
On the firm side of the Layla, I feel much more supported while back sleeping. Side sleeping, this side of the Layla is too firm, and I am feeling more pressure on my shoulders and hips. Stomach sleeping, the firm side of the Layla is offering me better support under my hips. Still, stomach sleepers might want a firmer mattress overall.
The Casper feels great when I am back sleeping. I can feel the Zoned Support holding up my lumbar area, helping keep my spine in neutral alignment. I feel decent pressure relief while side sleeping, but it is not quite as comfortable as the soft side of the Layla mattress. Stomach sleeping, the Zoned Support is keeping my hips from sinking in too far.
What Do the Layla and Casper Mattresses Feel Like?
The Layla mattress features a classic memory foam feel. This means that when I lie down on the Layla, I feel myself slowly sink into the mattress. I can feel the memory foam conform to the curves of my body. Memory foam is great with contouring, so this is no surprise. I will also say it is not too easy to move around on the Layla mattress, but this is a common issue with memory foam mattresses.
The Casper mattress has more of a balanced foam feel. Lying down, I feel myself sink in just a bit, but I have no trouble moving around or changing positions. The AirScape foam on top is very responsive, so it bounces back into place very quickly.
Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lbs – 230 lbs
Average weight back sleepers will most likely prefer the firm side of the Layla mattress over the soft side. The soft side probably won’t offer them enough support. However, if you are very close to 130 lbs, you might get enough support.
That being said, most average weight back sleepers will get a better balance of comfort and support on the Casper mattress. Its Zoned Support will support the lumbar area, keeping your spine neutrally aligned all night.
Average weight side sleepers will probably experience better pressure relief on the soft side of the Layla mattress. The thick layer of memory foam should relieve pressure around the shoulders and hips.
Stomach sleepers will feel good support on the firm side of the Layla and on the Casper mattress as well. Strict stomach sleepers might still want a firmer mattress overall.
Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lbs
Heavyweight back sleepers probably won’t get enough support on either of these mattresses. If you weigh close to 230 lbs, you could get enough support on the Casper and the firm side of the Layla but, if you weigh much more, you should consider a mattress for heavy people.
Heavyweight side sleepers who don’t weigh too much more than 230 lbs should experience some nice pressure relief on the soft side of the Layla mattress. If you weigh much more than that, you could press too far into this mattress and feel more pressure on your shoulders and hips. Side sleepers of this body type will probably find the firm side of the Layla and the Casper mattress to be too firm for their situation.
Heavyweight stomach sleepers will want to find a firmer, more supportive mattress. They will want something made specifically for larger people that will keep their hips elevated.
Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lbs
Lightweight back sleepers should get the support they need on the Casper and both the soft and firm side of the Layla mattress. However, the Casper will still offer the best lumbar support.
Side sleeping, they will feel comfortable on the Casper and the soft side of the Layla mattress. The firm side will definitely feel too firm for them.
Stomach sleeping, the Casper and the firm side of the Layla will both offer the support they require.

Now, let’s pop the hood of these mattresses and see exactly what is going on inside.
Cover
The Layla memory foam mattress boasts a soft, breathable cover that is cool to the touch. It contains cooling materials that will help draw heat away from your body.
The Casper also features a thin, breathable mattress cover that allows air to flow through the top.
Comfort Layers
Because it is flippable, the Layla has comfort layers on both sides of the mattress. The soft side features a thick layer of copper-infused memory foam. This is designed to provide excellent pressure relief. In addition, the copper infusion is meant to keep the memory foam from trapping body heat and should help keep you cool at night. The firmer side features a thinner layer of this same copper-infused memory foam.
The Casper’s top layer contains a proprietary AirScape foam. This is a responsive polyfoam that is ventilated for airflow. It is meant to offer the comfort of memory foam without causing you to feel stuck or have trouble moving around.
Transition Layers
The soft side of the Layla features a transition layer made of MaxAirflow foam. This layer has channels cut into it to allow air to flow through the mattress. In addition, it is zoned, providing targeted support and comfort for your body.
The transition layer is really where the Casper shines. Its Zoned Support system is the bed’s claim to fame and is designed to provide enhanced lumbar support. Compared to the zoning in the Layla, the Zoned Support system is much more pronounced. It is meant to be a good match for combination sleepers and help with back pain.

Sleeping Hot or Cold
The Layla and Casper mattresses are both all-foam, so they are going to trap a bit of heat. However, they do feature cooling materials to offset this a bit. The Layla’s cover is cool to the touch, and the copper-infused memory foam should sleep cooler than other types of memory foam.
The Casper’s AirScape foam does help the top of the mattress breathe somewhat, but it does still feel warm

Edge support is also important for couples. A mattress with good edge support will allow both partners to sleep toward the edge without falling off.
In terms of edge support, the Casper performs much better than the Layla. I feel a bit like I might roll off the Layla when I lie near the edge. I do not have this issue with the Casper mattress and feel very supported when I sit and lie down near the edge.
Durability
Looking at the materials and construction of the Layla and Casper, they are even in terms of durability. They should last for between 7 and 10 years but, if you want some more longevity, take a look at the hybrid models.
Off-gassing
When you unbox most online mattresses, they are going to emit a chemical smell for a few days. We did experience this after unboxing both the Layla and Casper mattress. However, the smell did dissipate after 48 hours.
Sex
If you want the best mattress for sex, you are going to want something that is bouncy and responsive. This makes the Casper the better mattress for sex. The Layla might make it difficult for sexual partners to move around.
Noise
