Firmness and Feel Differences
When shopping for a new mattress, it’s always important to consider firmness and feel. Some people prefer something soft and slow-moving, while others need more support. Which mattress will best suit your sleep needs?
How Firm Are the Saatva and Amerisleep Mattresses?
On our firmness scale, the Amerisleep AS3 mattress feels comes in at 6.5/10 – a classic medium-firm. With Bio-Pur foam on top and coils at the bottom, the Amerisleep AS3 gives a great balance of comfort and support.
The Saatva Luxury Firm model feels like a 7/10 on our firmness scale. So if you’re looking for a mattress that’s slightly firmer than the industry standard, the Saatva is a great choice. The pillow top adds a touch of plushness, while the coils provide ample support.
Sleeping on the Amerisleep and Saatva Mattresses
The Amerisleep AS3 is a fantastic choice for back sleepers. The base layer gives the lumbar area an extra boost of support, so back sleepers should stay in the proper alignment all night long. Like the Saatva, the Amerisleep AS3 mattress is a decent choice for side sleepers. Many people may sink through the memory foam comfort layer and feel some pressure along their shoulders. Stomach sleepers should feel well supported on the AS3, but they may prefer the Amerisleep AS1‘s firmness level.
Saatva’s supportive coils and plush comfort layer makes it a great pick for back sleepers. This mattress provides plenty of support for the lumbar area, which is why we named it one of the best mattresses for lower back pain and sciatica. The Saatva Luxury Firm mattress is a decent pick for side sleepers, but some people may need more plushness. This bed should work well for stomach sleepers, but it greatly depends on body type.
What Do the Amerisleep and Saatva Mattresses Feel Like?
The Amerisleep AS3 has a bouncy and responsive feel, so you won’t feel trapped inside the layers. It’s still quite easy to move around on top of this mattress.
Even with its soft pillow top comfort layer, the Saatva has a traditional innerspring feel. When lying down on the mattress, I don’t sink in too far, and I still feel a good amount of bounce.
Average Weight Sleepers – 130lbs – 230lbs
Back sleepers who weigh between 130 and 230lbs should find the Amerisleep AS3 is a great pick. Average weight side sleepers, however, may find this bed is a touch too firm. If you’re primarily a side sleeper, we recommend choosing the Amerisleep AS4 or Amerisleep AS5. The AS3 is a decent choice for average weight stomach sleepers; its firmness level should prevent hips from sinking too far into the layers.
Average weight back sleepers should feel quite comfortable on the Saatva mattress. The coils help keep the lower back in alignment, and the comfort layers cushion the hips. Some side sleepers may find the Saatva Luxury Firm is a nice pick, but it still might be too firm for those who weigh closer to 230lbs. If you need additional pressure relief, we recommend choosing the Saatva Plush Soft model. While stomach sleeping, average weight people should feel well-supported. Because this mattress is on the firmer side, it should keep the body in alignment throughout the night.
Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230lbs
Because the Amerisleep AS3 has zoned coils, heavyweight back sleepers should get plenty of support. While side sleeping, heavier people may notice some pressure along their shoulders as they press into the top comfort layer. The Amerisleep AS3 also isn’t a great pick for larger stomach sleepers. People in this category may feel their hips sink deeply into the foam layer, which could lead to back pain over time. If you’re a larger stomach sleeper, we recommend specifically searching for one of the best mattresses for heavy people.
For back sleepers who weigh closer to 230 lbs, the Saatva Luxury Firm is a great pick. Those who weigh closer to 300lbs will feel more supported on the Saatva HD. Larger side sleepers will likely find the Saatva is a decent pick. Some people may notice a bit of pressure along shoulders and hips, however. Heavyweight stomach sleepers will need a firmer mattress. On the Saatva Luxury Firm, people in this category will likely feel their hips sinking out of alignment.
Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130lbs
Lightweight back sleepers should feel quite comfortable on the Amerisleep AS3. While side sleeping, however, lightweight people may feel significant pressure. If you fall in this category, check out our list of the best soft mattresses. These options should provide plenty of relief along shoulders and hips. Lightweight stomach sleepers, on the other hand, should find the Amerisleep AS3 is a fantastic choice. This mattress is firm enough to keep the body in alignment, which is exactly what you should look for if you’re a stomach sleeper.
The Saatva Luxury Firm mattress is well suited for lightweight sleepers – no matter which sleeping position they prefer. The base coils and soft pillow top combine to create an excellent balance of comfort and support.
Mattress Construction Differences
We know what the Amerisleep and Saatva mattresses feel like. Now, let’s learn more about what they’re made out of. Keep reading for details about Amerisleep and Saatva’s construction.
Cover
The Amerisleep AS3 mattress has a Refresh Cooling cover, which is designed to feel cool to the touch and improve circulation.
The Saatva has a cover made out of organic cotton, which gives the top of the mattress a soft and breathable exterior.
Comfort Layers
Beneath Amerisleep’s cooling cover sits a 3″ layer of proprietary Bio-Pur foam. This plant-based material has a responsive feel, and it’s more breathable than traditional memory foam.
Beneath the organic cotton cover, the Saatva mattress has pillow tops full of soft foam. This feature gives the mattress a nice layer of cushioning for shoulders and hips. In fact, it’s part of the reason we named it one of the best pillow top mattresses. Below the pillow top sits a layer of memory foam for extra pressure relief.
Support Layer
Amerisleep’s first support layer has zoned, pocketed coils. The coils feel firmer toward the center of the mattress and softer near the sides, so sleepers should get plenty of support around the lumbar area. The Amerisleep mattress has a foam encasement around the coils, which aids in edge support. All of this rests on a layer of high-density base foam.
In the support layer, the Saatva has two sets of steel coils. First, there’s a layer of micro coils for support and body contouring. Then, there’s a layer of thick coils that can provide support for heavier weights.
Mattress Height
The Amerisleep AS3 mattress is 12″ tall.
The Saatva Luxury Firm mattress is available in two heights – 11.5″ and 14.5″

Amerisleep vs. Saatva Performance Differences
Let’s look closer at Amerisleep and Saatva’s cooling features, motion transfer, edge support, durability, and more!
Sleeping Hot or Cold
The Amerisleep AS3 mattress has several fantastic cooling features. The open-celled Bio-Pur foam has plenty of room for airflow, so it won’t trap heat like many other foams do. Plus, this mattress has coils in the support layer for added breathability.
Because the Saatva mattress has two sets of coils, it has plenty of room for airflow. But this is just one of the reasons it’s great for hot sleepers. This mattress also has a cover made out of thin, breathable cotton. It’s one of the best cooling mattresses on the market!
Motion Transfer
If you share a bed with a partner, you’ll definitely want to consider a bed’s motion transfer. If a mattress doesn’t isolate motion well, you may be disturbed by your partner’s movements when they switch sleeping positions in the middle of the night.
Even though it’s a responsive mattress, the Amerisleep AS3 does a great job at eliminating motion transfer. The Bio-Pur foam absorbs motion, so sleepers shouldn’t notice their partner’s movements during the night. If you’re shopping for one of the best mattresses for couples, you can’t go wrong with the Amerisleep AS3.
Because of the two sets of coils, the Saatva mattress isn’t the best at isolating motion. If you share a bed with someone, you may feel your partner’s movements from time to time.
Edge Support
You’ll also want to consider edge support if you share a bed with someone. If a mattress isn’t supportive near the sides, you may not be able to utilize the full surface of the bed. That could push couples closer toward the center of the mattress and create numerous sleep issues.
Fortunately, the Amerisleep AS3 mattress has impressive edge support. A foam encasement surrounds the support coils, so sleepers should feel quite secure around the sides of the mattress.
Saatva’s coils also give the mattress great edge support. When lying down near the side, I felt very secure.
Durability
Both mattresses are made with high-quality materials and should last a long time. Overall, we expect the Saatva and Amerisleep mattresses to last about 10 years.
Off-Gassing
It’s common for bed-in-a-box mattresses to have a short off-gassing period. During this time, the mattress will expand and emit a slight chemical smell.
The Amerisleep does take about 24-48 hours to off-gas and expand. You may notice a slight smell at first, but it will completely fade after two days.
Because the Saatva does not arrive compressed inside a cardboard box, there is no off-gassing period. Customers will be able to sleep on their Saatva mattress right away and avoid smelling any odor.
Noise
Neither mattress is especially noisy. It’s possible the coils could create sound over time, but we do not anticipate this becoming an issue.
Sex
Couples looking for one of the best mattresses for sex generally want something that’s bouncy and responsive. If this is top-of-mind, you can’t go wrong with either the Saatva or Amerisleep mattresses. Both beds have coil support layers, which give them a good bounce. It’s very easy to move around and shift positions on these beds.
Company Policies
Before purchasing a new mattress, it’s always a good idea to read the fine print. Let’s take a close look at Amerisleep and Saatva’s warranty information, sleep trials, and return policies.

Saatva offers a lifetime warranty.
