Lull Mattress Firmness and Feel

First things first, let’s examine the Lull mattress’s firmness and feel. These two elements will help you quickly determine whether the bed will meet all of your sleep needs.

How Firm is the Lull Mattress?

The Lull mattress comes in at 7/10 on our firmness scale, which is a half point firmer than the industry standard of medium-firm. However, it’s important to note that firmness is subjective and greatly depends on a person’s body type. For example, heavier people may think the Original Lull mattress feels much firmer because they will compress the top layers and feel more of the support foam underneath.

Sleeping On The Lull Mattress

The Lull is a great mattress for back sleepers because it offers plenty of lumbar support. It doesn’t work as well for side sleepers, though. Because the Lull mattress feels firmer than average, some side sleepers won’t get enough pressure relief along their shoulders and hips. The Lull mattress could work well for some lightweight and average weight stomach sleepers, but heavier stomach sleepers won’t get the hip support they need in order to maintain the proper alignment.

Lull Mattress - Back Sleeping

What Does the Lull Mattress Feel Like?

The Lull mattress has a balanced foam feel. Sleepers will feel some pressure relief from the memory foam comfort layers, but they won’t “sink inside” it like they might on other memory foam mattresses. Because the foam feels a bit more responsive, it’s also easy for sleepers to move around on top of the mattress and switch sleeping positions.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lb – 230 lb

The Lull is a great match for average weight back sleepers. This mattress contains supportive memory foam that promotes the proper spinal alignment. Some average weight side sleepers may feel some pressure along their shoulders and hips. That’s because smaller people don’t compress the top layers very much, which makes the mattress feel firmer. Stomach sleepers who weigh between 130 lb and 230 lb will likely feel their hips sinking out of alignment, which can lead to lower back pain.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lb

Those who weigh more than 230 lb will compress the foam layers a bit, which will make the mattress feel firmer — around 8/10 on our firmness scale. This is great news for heavier back sleepers, because the mattress will offer plenty of lumbar support.

Side sleepers in this category will need more pressure relief along their shoulders and hips, because the firm foam layers won’t cushion joints. The Lull also isn’t a great option for heavier stomach sleepers. In this sleeping position, heavier people may feel their backs crane out of alignment, which could cause lumbar pain. Check out our list of the best mattresses for heavy people for some other options.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lb

The Lull is a great mattress for side sleepers. While back sleeping, lightweight people should feel plenty of lumbar support. Because smaller people won’t compress the top layers too much, side sleepers will also get the pressure relief they need along their shoulders and hips. The Lull is also a great match for lightweight stomach sleepers, because the supportive foam will help keep hips in the proper alignment.

Lull Mattress Construction

Now, let’s see what the Lull mattress is made out of.

LayerDescription
CoverThe cover feels soft, thin, and breathable.
Comfort Layer #1The first layer is made with gel-infused memory foam, which helps dissipate body heat.
Comfort Layer # 2The second comfort layer is made with high-resilience foam, which helps prevent sleepers from “bottoming out” on the mattress.
Support LayerThe base layer is made with high-density support foam.

Lull Mattress Performance

We can’t just look at firmness, feel, and construction! It’s also important to examine how well a mattress performs. Keep reading to learn about the Lull mattress’s cooling features, motion transfer, edge support, and more.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

The gel-infused foam layer helps dissipate some body heat, and the responsive feel prevents sleepers from becoming uncomfortably warm. But even so, the Lull mattress doesn’t sleep as cool as most innerspring and hybrid mattresses. If you tend to overheat at night, we recommend looking at one of the best cooling mattresses.

Motion Transfer

Because it’s made entirely out of foam, the Lull mattress isolates motion well. When my colleague switched sleeping positions on top of the bed next to me, I couldn’t feel his movements at all. This is great news for couples!

Edge Support

When I sat along the edge of the Lull mattress, I felt the foam layers collapse underneath me. However, when I rested along the side of the mattress, I felt quite secure. Overall, the Lull has good edge support and should work well for couples.

Durability

Because it’s a budget-friendly bed, I don’t expect the Lull mattress to last as long as many other options on the market. The Lull mattress should have a lifespan of about five to seven years.

Off-Gassing

Like most all-foam mattresses, the Lull had a brief off-gassing period. You can expect to smell a faint chemical odor for about 48 hours. After that, the smell will completely fade away.

Noise

The Lull mattress was completely silent when we tested it, and because it doesn’t contain springs, we don’t expect it to create sound as time goes on.

Sex

If you’re looking for one of the best mattresses for sex, chances are you want a bed that’s easy to move around on. The Lull mattress feels more responsive than many other memory foam mattresses, but it isn’t as bouncy as innerspring beds. This may not be the best mattress for getting intimate.

Company Policies

We always urge shoppers to read the fine print before making a purchasing decision. Here’s what you can expect if you order a Lull mattress.

Warranty Info

The Lull mattress is backed by a lifetime warranty.

Sleep Trial

Lull gives customers a 365-night sleep trial period.

Return Policy

Lull offers quick and easy returns — as long as you return the mattress within the first year.

Common Lull Mattress Complaints

The Lull mattress is great for lightweight sleepers who want to save money, however, some people found the mattress was not a good match. Some customers complained about its firmness level. Larger stomach sleepers, for example, said they didn’t get enough pressure relief on the Lull.

How Does The Lull Compare To Other Mattresses?

Anyone who is considering the Lull mattress might want to know how it compares to one of its main competitors, the Casper mattress. Let’s take a closer look:

Lull vs Casper

While the Lull and Casper are both all-foam mattresses, they do feature some noticeable differences.

The Casper contains four foam layers, while the Lull only contains three. Casper also has a zoned support system that makes the center of the mattress feel firmer than the head and foot. This helps combination sleepers maintain the proper spinal alignment throughout the night.

Casper Mattress Construction

The Casper is a better match for side sleepers because it offers more pressure relief. It is also a more luxurious mattress, and while it does cost more, the Casper could be a better long-term investment. The Lull, on the other hand, is a great fit for back sleepers who want to save money.

Who Should Get The Lull?

  • Lightweight people
  • Back sleepers
  • Those who want to save money

Who Should Get The Casper?

  • Combination sleepers
  • People who want a more luxurious mattress
  • Those who have back pain

FAQs

How long is the Lull mattress going to last?

The life of the Lull very much depends on the size and weight of the owner, how often they use it, and how often they maintain the mattress. That being said, most Lull mattresses should last for between five and seven years.

Is the Lull mattress good for side sleeping?

The Lull mattress is not the best match for side sleeping because it is firmer than average, and side sleepers could feel some serious pressure on their shoulders and hips when they lie down. The mattress is a much better fit for back and stomach sleepers.

Do you need a box spring for the Lull mattress?

The Lull mattress does not require a box spring, and it can be placed on any flat surface such as a bed frame or foundation.
