Many mattress companies claim that their products are “luxury,” but in my time as a mattress reviewer, I’ve learned that this is rarely true. But, I’m always excited when I come across a mattress that might in fact live up to the “luxury” name.
That is what I thought when I received the Stearns & Foster Lux Estate mattress, a hand-stitched, high-end mattress. Is it as luxurious as it claims to be? I tested the mattress inside and out to help you find out if this is the luxury mattress of your dreams.
Editor’s Note: I reviewed the Medium Pillow Top model of the Stearns & Foster Lux Estate mattress.

Stearns & Foster Lux Estate Mattress Video Review
Stearns & Foster Lux Estate Mattress Review: General Overview
Stearns & Foster is one of the oldest mattress producers in the world. The company was founded in 1846, so it beats most online mattress companies by over 150 years. During the ensuing years, Stearns & Foster has become an extremely popular company and is known for its high-end mattresses that you’ll find in many nice hotels. While I’ve reviewed over 300 mattresses, I have sadly never slept on a Stearns & Foster mattress until now. As a mattress geek, I was interested to see what all the fuss was about.
I personally tried out the Stearns & Foster Lux Estate mattress. This hybrid mattress is available with or without a pillow top and comes in multiple firmnesses. I received the Lux Estate with the pillow top and a Medium firmness. And, after sleeping on it, I can say this is one of the most luxurious mattresses I have ever tried. Still, it is not going to be for everyone, and its luxury comes with a price.
Pros of the Stearns & Foster Lux Estate
- Good for multiple sleeping positions, thanks to its medium-firm feel
- Has a soft pillow top feel, which gives it a hotel-like quality
- Made with durable materials that should last at least a decade
Cons of the Stearns & Foster Lux Estate
- Lacks a contouring memory foam feel
- Has a higher price point, due to its high-quality construction
- Stomach sleepers will need something firmer in order to maintain the correct spinal alignment.

Stearns & Foster Lux Estate Firmness and Feel
I first tested the Lux Estate to see how firm it was and what it felt like. This always gives me a good idea of what types of sleepers will prefer a mattress. Just keep in mind that I am talking about the Medium model, and the Soft and Firm models will feel different.
How Firm Is The Lux Estate Mattress?
The mattress industry uses a scale of 1-10, and 6.5 is what most brands and reviewers consider to be “medium-firm.” It’s no surprise then that the Medium model of this mattress scored an exact 6.5/10.
When I pushed into the top of the mattress, I felt the pillow top and foam layers give way. There was some real plushness on top, but deeper down, I felt the firmness and support of the coils.
Sleeping on the Stearns & Foster Lux Estate Mattress
I started out back sleeping on the Lux Estate, and I got just the balance of comfort and support I required. Back sleepers need something that is not too firm, not too soft, and the Medium model Lux Estate is just right. My hips sank into the pillow top, but I didn’t feel like I was getting out of alignment. The coils and other foam layers supported my back and kept my spine in a straight line. A mattress like this shouldn’t cause you back pain over time.
When I moved to my side, I felt some pressure buildup around my shoulders and hips. Side sleeping, your weight is concentrated on your shoulders and hips, so you need something on the softer end. I didn’t feel uncomfortable per se, but I think side sleepers will want to opt for the Soft Lux Estate model.
Stomach sleeping, the Stearns & Foster was too soft for my taste. Most stomach sleepers require a firmer mattress to hold up their hips. If your hips dip down into the mattress, your spine won’t be in alignment, which could create or worsen back pain. Stomach sleepers should check out the Firm version of this mattress, but they may need something even firmer.
What Does The Stearns & Foster Lux Estate Feel Like?
While the Lux Estate does contain some modern materials, such as TEMPUR foam, it has more of a traditional mattress feel. This is not too surprising, given that the brand pretty much wrote the book on traditional mattresses.
This means it has a bouncy, pillow-top mattress feel, and it is not hard to move around on. I rolled around on the mattress and changed positions, but I never felt like I was stuck.
Sleeper Weight | Back Sleepers | Side Sleepers | Stomach Sleepers |
Lightweight (Under 130 lb) | Excellent | Excellent | Fair |
Average (130 – 230 lb) | Excellent | Good | Fair |
Heavyweight (Over 230 lb) | Good | Fair | Bad |
Is the Stearns & Foster Mattress Good For Lightweight People (Under 130 lb)?
- It’s a great choice for lightweight back sleepers, thanks to its supportive feel and plush pillow top.
- It also works well for lightweight side sleepers, because the tufted pillow top offers plenty of pressure relief.
- It’s a decent choice for lightweight stomach sleepers, but some people in this category may not get the hip support they need.
Is the Stearns & Foster Mattress Good For Average Weight People (130 – 230 lb)?
- It’s a fantastic choice for average-weight back sleepers. The supportive coils will help keep the spine in a neutral alignment.
- Most average-weight side sleepers should feel plenty of pressure relief and support on this mattress, but those who weigh closer to 230 lb may need something that feels a bit more plush.
- Average-weight stomach sleepers who weigh closer to 130 lb should get the support they need, but heavier people may feel their hips sink out of alignment (which can lead to lower back pain).
Is the Stearns & Foster Mattress Good For Heavyweight People (Over 230 lb)?
- It’s a good choice for heavyweight back sleepers, because the supportive coils should help promote the proper spinal alignment.
- Side sleepers who weigh more than 230 lb may sink into the top layer a bit, which could put some extra pressure on their shoulders and hips.
- It’s not a good option for heavyweight stomach sleepers. People in this category may “bottom out” on this mattress, which could lead to lower back pain. Check out our list of the best mattresses for heavy people for some more options.
Stearns & Foster Lux Estate Mattress Construction
One of the drawbacks of these nicer mattresses is that you can’t really see what is going on inside. However, based on my research and experience with the Lux Estate, here are the materials you are going to find.
Cover
On top of the mattress, there is a knit cover made from Tencel. That material is known for its cooling and restorative properties. Many higher-end mattresses feature it in their covers.
Comfort Layers
The pillow-top model of the Lux Estate contains multiple layers of foam quilted into the cover. The main layer consists of TEMPUR-Indulge Memory Foam. This is designed to be supportive and comfortable at the same time and promote a weightless feeling in the bed.
Support Layer
The Lux Estate features proprietary IntelliCoil technology. They are tall, durable, and supportive. In addition, the edge of the mattress has something called Precision Edge technology. This promotes edge support and keeps the edges of the mattress sturdy.
You’ll also find AirVents tech surrounding the coils. Coupled with the breathable coils, these vents in the sides of the mattress keep air flowing throughout.
Mattress Height
The mattress is 16″ tall.

Stearns & Foster Lux Estate Mattress Performance
Besides sleeping on the Lux Estate, I also ran it through many tests. The results will let you know how the Lux Estate will perform for you.
Sleeping Hot or Cold
There are many cooling materials in the Lux Estate mattress. The cooling cover, breathable coils, and vents on the sides of the mattress are all designed to prevent the Lux Estate from trapping heat.
In my experience, the cooling materials in the Lux Estate did their work well. As advertised, the top of the mattress was cool to the touch and, sleeping on the mattress, I did not overheat.
Motion Transfer
Motion transfer is what happens when your partner moves around on their side of the bed, and you feel it on your side of the bed. If you’ve ever been woken up by your partner when they go to the bathroom at night, you’ve experienced this.
To test out the motion transfer on the Lux Estate, I placed a glass of water on the mattress and pushed into the surrounding areas. This was meant to mimic the motion a sleeping partner might make at night. I was happy to see very little disturbance in the water. I also lay on the mattress and asked my co-worker to roll around on the other side. I was barely disturbed.
This all lets me know the mattress isolates motion well and should be a good option for couples.
Edge Support
The Lux Estate is a supportive mattress and even has a reinforced edge. Just looking at the mattress, I expected it to have solid edge support.
Sitting and lying down on the Lux Estate, I was not disappointed. I sat near the edge and did not feel like the mattress was collapsing too much. Also, when I lay near the edge, the edge did not buckle or make me feel like I was going to roll off.
This is also good news for couples. You and your partner can sleep all the way toward the edges of the mattress. You won’t have to huddle in the middle for fear of rolling off.
Durability
Durability is hard to judge based on a limited time with a mattress. I can’t say exactly how long the Lux Estate is going to last, but I can estimate based on its materials.
First off, based on my research, each Stearns & Foster mattress is hand-crafted. Compared to many mass-produced mattresses, this kind of construction is going to stand up to more years of use. Second, the foams and coils found in the mattress appear to be high-density and high-grade respectively.
With this in mind, I would say the Lux Estate is going to last for at least 10 years. This is a good lifespan for a mattress, and after 10 years, it is usually a good time to start looking for a new mattress.
Off-gassing
Off-gassing occurs with most bed-in-a-box mattresses when they are unboxed. You’ll notice a chemical smell with these mattresses, but this won’t happen with the Lux Estate. When I received the mattress it was fully expanded and just wrapped in a plastic sheet. After tearing this away, the mattress emitted no odors, and I was ready to use it right away.
Noise
Noise is another issue that couples want to consider. If your mattress squeaks and creaks when you move around, this will be annoying for both partners.
When I rolled around on the Lux Estate, I heard no noise whatsoever. However, this may not be the case after a number of years. Hybrids that have been slept on for years may start to squeak when you roll around on top.
Sex
The Stearns & Foster is a responsive mattress and is thus a good mattress for sex. Sexual partners need something bouncy to let them move around with ease. With the Lux Estate, neither partner should feel stuck or have issues changing positions.

Stearns & Foster Company Policies
The Lux Estate is a luxury mattress, but how does its warranty and sleep trial stack up?
Warranty Info
The Lux Estate comes with a 10-year warranty. This is standard for many online mattresses, but it isn’t as long as the lifetime warranties offered by competitors like WinkBeds.
Sleep Trial
You get a 90-night sleep trial, which isn’t as long as brands like Nectar or DreamCloud. These brands feature a 365-night sleep trial, giving you a whole year to decide if the mattress is right for you.
Return Policy
Stearns & Foster offers free shipping and returns with all its mattresses. In addition, most of its models are available with free white glove delivery. This means that delivery people will set up the mattress in your house for free.
Common Stearns & Foster Mattress Complaints
Some Stearns & Foster customers have complained that the mattresses are too firm. In addition, some had issues with sagging just a few months into owning a Stearns & Foster mattress.
How Does the Stearns & Foster Lux Estate Compare to Others?
I always recommend doing some comparison shopping before settling on a new mattress. See how the Lux Estate stacks up against its competitors.

Similar to the Stearns & Foster Lux Estate, the WinkBed is a luxurious hybrid mattress. It features coils, multiple layers of foam and a plush pillow top. You also get multiple firmness options with the WinkBed so, like the Lux Estate, it is good for multiple sleeping positions.
However, there are some construction differences between the two mattresses. For example, the WinkBed features zoning, but the Lux Estate does not. But, in general, the Lux Estate is a more high-end mattress and is, unlike the WinkBed, handcrafted. The Lux Estate’s design makes it more durable so, while it costs more, it will be a better long-term investment.

The Saatva is another popular coil mattress that comes in multiple firmness options. At first glance, its design is almost identical to the Lux Estate–coils, foam and a pillow top. Looking more closely, the Saatva actually has two sets of coils as well as a zoned construction. And, the Lux Estate features more layers of foam and more advanced cooling features as well.
Neither mattress comes in a box and will arrive at your house fully expanded and ready to be set up with free white glove delivery. However, the Lux Estate is still a higher-end mattress and, with its handmade design, should be a longer-term investment.
