The main design difference is going to be the microcoils and pocketed coils. The Original and the Mint are both all-foam mattresses, but the Hybrid contains coils in its support layer instead of foam. This makes it a supportive, high-end mattress that’s great for a variety of different kinds of sleepers. But is this right bed for you? Here’s a quick snapshot of the pros and cons of this popular bed-in-a-box.
Pros of the Tuft & Needle Hybrid
- This mattress’s thick memory foam comfort layer should provide most back and side sleepers with a balance of support and ample pressure relief.

How Firm is the Tuft & Needle Hybrid?
The Hybrid feels close to a 6/10, just slightly softer-than-average. When I press my hand into the top of the Tuft & Needle Hybrid, I am feeling some soft layers at first, but then my hand hits the firmer layers beneath.
Sleeping On The Tuft & Needle Hybrid
The memory foam, Adaptive foam, microcoils, and pocketed coils combine to give the Hybrid a balance of comfort and support. This makes the Tuft & Needle feel absolutely fantastic when I am sleeping on my back. The supportive coils are providing excellent overall support, while the memory foam and Adaptive Foam are adding some contouring as well.
The comfort layer is also particularly thick so that, when I move to my side, I feel no real noticeable pressure on my shoulders and hips. The top of the Hybrid is quite plush, and I believe most side sleepers are going to feel similarly.
However, stomach sleepers of pretty much any size are going to want a firmer mattress. The Hybrid is just not supportive enough for me when I am on my stomach, and I need something a bit more supportive.
What Does the Tuft & Needle Hybrid Feel Like?
Now, when it comes to feel, the Hybrid is all about balance. The mattress has a bit of that memory foam feel but not too much. It also has a bit of bounce, but not too much. So, I feel like I am sleeping on top of the mattress, but I am also sinking in just a little bit.

- The Tuft & Needle Hybrid provides excellent support and pressure relief to lightweight back sleepers.
- Lightweight side sleepers shouldn’t feel any pressure along their shoulders and hips.
- Even while stomach sleeping, lightweight sleepers should feel good support under their hips.
Is the Tuft & Needle Hybrid Mattress Good For Average Weight People (130 – 230 lb)?
- Average weight sleepers should feel very comfortable while back sleeping. The pocketed coils provide plenty of support, and the memory foam gives nice body contouring.
- Average weight side sleepers should also feel plenty of pressure relief and support on the Tuft & Needle Hybrid.
- The Tuft & Needle Hybrid isn’t the best choice for average weight stomach sleepers. This bed is on the softer side, so it won’t provide enough support for this sleeping position. Instead, people in this category should take a look at the best mattresses for stomach sleepers.
Is the Tuft & Needle Hybrid Mattress Good For Heavyweight People (Over 230 lb)?
- Heavier sleepers, generally, will feel like the Tuft & Needle Hybrid is a bit firmer. It’s still a great pick for back sleepers, though. Heavier people should feel ample support from the coils and plenty of comfort from the foam.
- Side sleepers who weigh closer to 300 lb should sleep comfortably on this mattress. The comfort layer is thick enough to alleviate pain on hips and shoulders. Those who weigh more than 300lbs may feel some slight firmness and pressure in those areas, however.
- Heavier stomach sleepers likely won’t get enough support on the Tuft & Needle Hybrid. The thick comfort layer allows hips to bow in, causing the body to get out of alignment. This can lead to back pain over time.

Cover
The Tuft & Needle Hybrid’s cover is soft and has a bit of that sweatshirt quality. It is quilted with a thin layer of memory foam.
Comfort Layers
The top comfort layer is 2” thick and made of Tuft & Needle’s proprietary Adaptive Foam. This unique material is found in all of the Tuft & Needle mattresses and combines memory foam and latex qualities. It is soft and allows sleepers to sink into the mattress, but it is also responsive and makes it easy to move around. The foam contains graphite and gel beads, which are are intended to assist with heat dissipation.
Below the top layer, there is a very thin layer of microcoils. This feature adds more contouring to the top of the mattress and gives the bed a nice balance of comfort and support.
Below the first two comfort layers sits a foam transition layer.
Support Layers
The support layer contains 6” of pocketed coils. These should be very supportive and should be able to hold up even larger weights.
This all rests on a 1” layer of base polyfoam.

To get a full picture of any online mattress, you’ll need to know how well it performs. Let’s dive deeper into the Tuft & Needle Hybrid’s cooling features, motion transfer, edge support, and durability.
Sleeping Hot or Cold
Foam mattresses have a history of sleeping hot, but that should not be a problem with the Tuft & Needle Hybrid. The graphite and gel beads can help draw heat away from sleepers, allowing them to sleep more coolly. The multiple sets of coils also promote airflow through the mattress. This will also keep the Hybrid from trapping too much heat and should make for a cooler night of sleep.
Motion Transfer
For those couples out there, motion transfer should be a major consideration. On a mattress with a lot of motion transfer, partners could wake each other up but, on mattresses with little motion transfer, this won’t be so much of an issue.
Memory foam mattresses are some of the best at handling motion transfer because this material absorbs motion and helps isolate motion to each side of the mattress.
Since the Tuft & Needle Hybrid features memory foam on top, I was interested to see how it would perform. I first placed a glass of water on one side of the Hybrid, and then I pressed into the other side. The glass of water was not disturbed too much.
Next, I lay down on one side of the mattress while Marten moved around on the other side, making the movements a partner might make in the middle of the night. I really didn’t feel his motion transfer to my side of the mattress.
This lets me know that the Tuft & Needle Hybrid should be a good mattress for couples.
Edge Support
Edge support should also come into play when couples are buying a mattress. Edge support is basically a measure of how stable the edge of a mattress is. Sitting or lying down near the edge of the Tuft & Needle Hybrid, will sleepers feel like they are going to roll off?
When I sit near the edge of the Tuft & Needle Hybrid, the memory foam and Adaptive Foam collapse only a bit. Also, the pocketed coils do not really collapse because they have a reinforced edge. This means the coils are actually firmer toward the edge of the mattress. That design also makes me feel very secure when I am lying down near the edge of the Hybrid.
Durability
The Tuft & Needle mattress is made with durable and high-quality materials, so it should have a long lifespan. You can anticipate this mattress will last between 7 and 10 years.
Off-Gassing
When opening a new bed-in-a-box, it’s common to notice a slight chemical smell. This is called “off-gassing,” and it was prevalent with the Tuft & Needle Hybrid. After 48 hours, though, the smell completely faded.
Noise
I did not notice any noise when testing the Tuft & Needle Hybrid. It’s possible the coils could squeak over time, but I don’t anticipate this becoming a noisy mattress.
Sex
Generally, couples looking for a good mattress for sex want something that’s responsive and easy to move around on. Because of its balanced feel, the Tuft & Needle mattress is a good choice for getting intimate. Partners won’t feel like they’re sinking inside the layers, and they should be able shift positions on top of this bed.
