Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid Mattress Firmness And Feel
Whenever you’re hunting for a new mattress, you can can make your search less overwhelming by zeroing in on firmness and feel. These factors tell you a lot about whether a mattress will suit your preferred sleep position(s) and other sleep needs. So without further ado, let’s kick off the in-depth portion of this review by taking a gander at the firmness and feel on the Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid!
How Firm Is The Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid?
As we’ve noted, the AS3 Hybrid is Amerisleep’s not-too-firm and not-too-soft model. So it’s not surprising that we ranked the mattress around a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, or right around average firmness. (The industry standard for average firmness is 6.5/10.) The Bio-Pur foam comfort layer is very soft, but when you push into the foam you can easily feel the firmer support layers beneath.
Sleeping On The Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid
The AS3 Hybrid has a great balance of comfort and support and thus is a perfect match for back sleeping. Our hips sank into the foam comfort layer just the right amount, and the foam provides some pleasant body contouring. Meanwhile, the zoning in the coils adds additional support under the lumbar area, which helps maintain proper spinal alignment.
We felt okay but not great while side sleeping on this mattress. The memory foam did relieve a good amount of pressure from our shoulders and hips. However, we still felt a bit of pressure, and we suspect that folks who spend all night in this position could feel jammed up around the shoulder or hip. Strict side sleepers might want to consider the softer Amerisleep AS4 or Amerisleep AS5.
We felt surprisingly well supported while stomach sleeping on this mattress. Normally, it takes a firmer mattress to keep our hips elevated and aligned with the spine. That said, anyone who spends all night on their stomach might want to select one of Amerisleep’s firmer models.
What Does The Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid Feel Like?
As its name implies, the Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid mattress is a (surprise!) hybrid mattress. True to this hybrid form, the mattress creates a balance of comfort and support. The foam on top offers some body contouring, but it’s also very responsive and doesn’t have the slow-moving feel that’s common with memory foam. Thanks to the responsive foam and bouncy coils, it’s very easy to move around on top of this bed.
Average Weight Sleepers – 130lbs – 230lbs
Average-weight back sleepers should enjoy a pleasant balance of comfort and support on the Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid. Average-weight side sleepers who only spend part of the night in this position could obtain enough pressure relief, but strict side sleepers will probably want to seek out a dedicated mattress for side sleepers. The Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid could feel supportive enough for some average-weight stomach sleepers (particularly those who are on the lighter end of the weight spectrum), but in general stomach sleepers might want to seek out a more supportive mattress.
Heavyweight Weight Sleepers – Over 230lbs
Heavyweight back sleepers should obtain adequate spinal support on the Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid, thanks in part to its zoned coils. Heavyweight side sleepers are likely to experience pressure around the shoulder and hip, because they could press through the softer layers into the firmer support layers underneath. The Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid is probably not supportive enough for heavyweight stomach sleepers, who will fare better on a more supportive mattress for heavy people.
Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130lbs
Lightweight back sleepers should enjoy a touch of pressure relief along with plenty of spinal support. Some lightweight side sleepers might obtain adequate pressure relief on the Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid, but in general strict side sleepers will probably want to look for a softer mattress. Lightweight stomach sleepers will probably feel well-supported on this mattress.

The Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid has the same Refresh Cooling Cover that’s featured on all its mattresses. This cover feels cool to the touch. It’s made with technology that converts body heat into far infrared energy, which helps improve circulation to aid in athletic recovery and improve sleep.
Comfort Layer
The primary comfort layer on the Amerisleep AS3 hybrid is made from 3″ of proprietary Bio-Pur foam, a plant-based material that’s responsive, open-celled, and more breathable than conventional memory foam. This layer offers a touch of pressure relief while remaining very responsive. It’s also CertiPUR-US certified, which means it’s low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
Support Layers
Underneath the Bio-Pur foam comfort layer, the Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid sports a primary support layer made from zoned, pocketed coils. These coils provide overall structure, bounce, and support, while the zoning offers sleepers additional lumbar support by making the center of the mattress a bit firmer than the rest. A foam encasement surrounds the coils and helps beef up the mattress’s edge support. Underneath the coils, there’s a base layer made from high-density, foundational foam.

Motion Transfer
Foam generally does a good job of minimizing motion transfer on a mattress, so we expected that the Bio-Pur foam comfort layer on the Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid would help cut down on disturbances. Based on our tests, this mattress fully lived up to our expectations. Even though it’s a responsive mattress, it does a great job of limiting motion transfer. Partners shouldn’t disturb each other much in the night, and this should be a good mattress for couples.
Edge Support
We were impressed with the edge support on the Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid mattress. It incorporates strong coils and a foam encasement, which together helped us feel secure while sitting and lying down near the edges of this mattress.
Durability
Thanks to its sturdy coils and high-quality foams, the Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid is a fairly durable mattress. This durability is reflected in the mattress’s generous warranty.
Off-Gassing
We observed just a touch of initial off-gassing from the Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid. This should dissipate within 24 to 48 hours.
Noise
At the time of this review, we didn’t observe any notable noise from the Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid. That said, because this mattress incorporates coils, it’s possible they could start to squeak a bit as time goes on.
Sex
