Vaya Mattress Overview
The Vaya mattress is a streamlined, all-foam mattress with a particularly simple construction, and it features basically two layers, much fewer than what we find in some other online mattresses. However, with its more basic design, the Vaya can be sold for much less than other bed in a box mattresses – at around $999.00 for a Queen size mattress, the Vaya really is quite affordable.
The mattress contains a proprietary Vaya foam that is a responsive and more breathable alternative to memory foam. Memory foam can make sleepers feel stuck and also overheat at night, but the Vaya is designed to prevent both of these issues.
While the mattress doesn’t have much to offer medium-weight or larger sleepers, lighter adults, children should get all the comfort and support they require on the Vaya.

Vaya Mattress Firmness And Feel
The Vaya is an all-foam mattress with proprietary foam in its comfort layer. Let’s discuss how these materials affect the support and comfort of the Vaya mattress.
How Firm Is The Vaya Mattress?
On our firmness scale, the Vaya mattress scored a 6.5/10, medium-firm. This is because the top layer of Vaya foam is very soft and easy to press into and, below that, the support layer of the Vaya is quite firm. These layers combine to give the Vaya this medium-firmness.
Sleeping On The Vaya Mattress
I expected the Vaya to be a good match for back sleeping because medium-firm mattresses with a balance of comfort and support are usually the best mattresses for back sleepers. Lying down on the Vaya, I can say that it is a decent fit for someone of my size – my hips sink into the top Vaya foam layer, but I can feel the support of the base layers beneath that.
Moving to my side, the Vaya is a decent fit, but I am still feeling a bit of pressure on my shoulders and hips. I am 160 lbs, and my weight is causing me to press through the Vaya foam and into the support layers.
At the same time, the Vaya might just be too soft for stomach sleeping – lying on my stomach, I do not get the right amount of support, especially under my hips. Those who need the best mattress for stomach sleepers will most likely need a mattress that is firmer than the Vaya.
What Does The Vaya Mattress Feel Like?
Overall, the Vaya mattress boasts a nice balanced foam feel. The Vaya foam is soft and offers some of that foam mattress feel, but it is also very responsive and makes it very easy to move around on the mattress and change positions at night. Because it is so bouncy, sleepers should not be getting stuck like they might in a memory foam mattress.
Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lbs – 230 lbs
I am average weight, around 160 lbs; I can say that, unless they primarily back sleepers, most average weight sleepers are going to want to look elsewhere. Average weight side sleepers might feel some pressure on their shoulders and their hips, and average weight stomach sleepers might bow into the mattress and experience some lower back pain.
Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lbs
To get the perspective of a larger person, we asked our team member, Marten, to try out the Vaya mattress for himself because he weighs around 250 lbs. He found that the mattress was not supportive enough for both back sleeping and stomach sleeping, and he felt like he dropped right through the mattress. Likewise, when he was side sleeping, he dropped through the comfort layer and felt serious pressure on his shoulders and hips. Those who need the best mattress for heavy people should see our roundup.
Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lbs
The Vaya is going to perform the best for lightweight adults, children, and teenagers. They should find that the mattress is supportive enough for back sleeping and comfortable enough for side sleeping, but this group still might want to find a firmer mattress if they are a stomach sleeper.
Make sure to take a look at our best mattresses for lightweight sleepers.
Vaya Mattress Construction
The Vaya mattress features a simple construction with basically two layers. Let’s look under the hood of the Vaya and see how these layers work.
Cover
The Vaya’s cover is soft, thin, and breathable. It doesn’t affect the overall feel of the mattress and it promotes airflow through the top of the mattress.
Comfort Layer
Proprietary Vaya foam is found in the comfort layer of the Vaya mattress – it is more responsive than standard memory foam and bounces back into place very quickly. It is also designed not to trap heat the way that memory foam does, so it might help the mattress sleep cooler.
Support Layers
Looking at the Vaya mattress, it looks like there are two pieces in the support layer, but they act as one. They are standard base polyfoam that one finds in most all-foam mattresses.
Mattress Height
The Vaya mattress is 10″ tall, which is similar to other all-foam mattresses on the market.
Vaya Mattress Size Options And Price
The Vaya mattress comes in all of the standard mattress sizes. Take a look at this chart to the size and price range of the Vaya.
Size | Dimensions | Price |
Twin | 38” x 74” | $749.00 |
Twin XL | 38" x 80" | $849.00 |
Full | 54" x 75" | $899.00 |
Queen | 60” x 80” | $999.00 |
King | 76" x 80" | $1199.00 |
California King | 72" x 84" | $1199.00 |
Vaya Mattress Performance
How does the Vaya perform when I lie down on it? We’ve already discussed how supportive and comfortable it is, but let’s get into the more nitty-gritty aspects of the Vaya.
Sleeping Hot Or Cold
The Vaya is an all-foam mattress but, unlike a pure memory foam mattress, it doesn’t trap as much heat. The Vaya foam and cover are quite breathable, so the mattress doesn’t sleep extremely hot.
That being said, it is not going to sleep as cool as a hybrid or innerspring mattress because coils allow for much more airflow than the base polyfoam found in the Vaya, and they should sleep cooler.
Motion Transfer
I noticed some significant motion transfer on the Vaya mattress during my tests. I placed a glass of water in the center of the mattress, and then I pressed into the other areas of the mattress and did see that the water was disturbed.
Also, I lay down on one side of the Vaya mattress while Marten got in and out of bed and rolled around on the other side. I could definitely feel his movements transfer to my side of the mattress.
Those who need the best mattress for couples might want to keep this in mind if they are considering the Vaya. They could experience some motion transfer, and they could disturb one another when they move around at night.
Edge Support
The edge support is not fantastic on the Vaya mattress. Sitting near the edge of the Vaya mattress, the foam collapses a good bit, and I don’t feel held up by the mattress; I feel like if I leaned forward to tie my shoes, I might fall forward onto the ground. Likewise, when I lie near the edge of the Vaya mattress, the foam collapses and makes me fill like I might spill off the mattress.
Again, couples might not find this to be the best match because both partners will not be able to sleep toward the edges of the mattress. They will be forced to sleep more toward the center of the Vaya.
Durability
The Vaya does not appear to contain very durable materials. There are no coils in the mattress and the foam does not seem to be of a high density and, because of this, the Vaya might only last for between three and four years before it starts to sag.
Off-gassing
The Vaya is an all-foam mattress and, like other foam bed in a box mattresses, there is going to be some off-gassing. When I took the Vaya out of the box and unwrapped it on the bed, there was a strong chemical smell but, after 48 hours, this smell completely dissipated.
Noise
The Vaya is not a very noisy mattress because it contains no coils. It is an all-foam mattress that makes almost no noise when I move around and change position, so people should not be waking up their sleeping partners when they reposition at night.
Sex
All-foam mattresses are not the best for sex because they make it difficult to find rhythm or leverage during intercourse. Those who want a better mattress for sex might want to look for a more responsive innerspring or hybrid mattress.
Warranty Info
The Vaya mattress comes with a 10-year limited warranty. Also, they offer a 100-night sleep trial to let shoppers try out the Vaya and make sure it works well for their situation.
The Vaya is a simple, affordable all-foam mattress that should be a good fit for lightweight adults, children, and teenagers.

How Does Vaya Compare To Other Mattresses?
The Vaya has many all-foam competitors, and it always a good idea to look at a number of options when shopping. I want to compare the Vaya to mattresses with a similar design.
Vaya Vs Tuft & Needle
The Vaya and the Tuft & Needle are quite similar in a number of ways – they are both all-foam mattresses with streamlined construction and they both feature a proprietary comfort foam that mixes memory foam and latex qualities. In addition, they are similar in terms of firmness and score around 6.5/10 on our mattress firmness scale.
That being said, the Tuft & Needle is a more durable, high-quality mattress, and it contains Adaptive Foam, a proprietary foam that is more cooling, supportive, and pressure-relieving than the Vaya foam. This does give it a higher price tag, however.
The Vaya mattress is an option for lightweight side sleepers, children and teenagers, and those who need an affordable mattress for a guest room. The Tuft & Needle is a more supportive and comfortable mattress for heavier sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers.
Vaya Vs AmazonBasics
The AmazonBasics is another popular mattress found on, that’s right, Amazon. Like the Vaya, it is also a basic mattress, and it contains a soft memory foam layer, a transition layer, and a dual base layer.
The memory foam gives the AmazonBasics more of a classic memory foam feel, while the Vaya has more of a balanced feel. This makes the AmazonBasics a better choice for those who like to slowly sink into their mattress. Besides that, the mattresses should both work for lightweight sleepers, children, and teenagers.
RELATED: Best Mattress On Amazon
The AmazonBasics is even more affordable than the Vaya, so those who want to spend as little as possible should go with the AmazonBasics. Also, it comes in three different thicknesses, so customers have more options in terms of firmness.
Vaya Mattress FAQs
I would like to answer some of the most frequently asked questions about the Vaya mattress.
How long will the Vaya mattress last?
This, of course, depends on how much someone actually uses the Vaya mattress, but it should last for around three years. It is not a very durable mattress, so it won't last as long as some more high-end bed in a box options.
How long will the chemical smell last after unboxing the Vaya mattress?
After unboxing the Vaya mattress, it should take between 24 and 48 hours for the chemical smell to completely dissipate. I recommend opening the bedroom window to speed up this process.
Is the Vaya mattress good for side sleepers?
The Vaya mattress should be a good fit for lighter side sleepers, especially children and teenagers. Medium-weight and heavyweight side sleepers will feel more pressure on their shoulders and hips, so the Vaya won't be the best match for them.
