Helix Twilight Mattress Firmness and Feel (Including Firmness Rating)
Whenever you’re shopping for a new mattress, two of the most important factors to consider are firmness and feel. These elements will tell you a lot about whether a mattress could be a good match for your preferred sleep position(s) and other sleep needs. So let’s kick off the in-depth portion of this review by taking a look at the Helix Twilight’s firmness and feel!
How Firm Is The Helix Twilight?
We ranked the Helix Twilight around 7.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. The industry standard for medium firmness is 6.5/10, so this suggests the Helix Twilight is decidedly firmer-than-average.
Note that firmness is a bit subjective; depending on your body weight and preferences, you might rank this mattress a touch firmer or softer. But it’s fair to say that virtually everyone will find this to be a relatively firm mattress.
Sleeping On The Helix Twilight
We found the Helix Twilight to be a fantastic match for back sleeping. It’s especially well suited to back sleepers who need more support due to back pain, heavier weight, or another factor. In fact, we’ve ranked the Helix Twilight as one of the best mattresses for back pain. The firmer nature of this mattress helps keep sleepers’ hips elevated and aligned with their spines.
Because this is a firm mattress, it’s not ideal for side sleeping. We felt jammed up around the shoulder and hip, and it’s unlikely that sleepers will feel comfortable in this position.
Thanks to its supportive feel, the Helix Twilight should be well-matched to most stomach sleepers, who should experience plenty of spinal support.
What Does The Helix Twilight Feel Like?
The Helix Twilight is a firm hybrid mattress with a slow-moving feel on top. This slow-moving feel is balanced out by the bounciness of the coils in the support layer. Sleepers shouldn’t feel stuck in this mattress.
Average Weight Sleepers – 130lbs – 230lbs
Average-weight back sleepers will find plenty of support on the firm Helix Twilight, though folks who prefer more pressure relief might find that this mattress feels a touch too firm in this position. The Helix Twilight is almost definitely too firm for average-weight side sleepers, who will likely experience pressure around the shoulder and hip. The firm feel of this mattress makes it a great fit for stomach sleepers, who should find that their hips and spine remain aligned through the night.
Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230lbs
Heavyweight back sleepers should enjoy adequate support on the Helix Twilight. Heavyweight side sleepers will no doubt find that this mattress feels too firm in this position. Heavyweight stomach sleepers who weigh less than 300 pounds should obtain adequate spinal support, while folks who weigh more than that will probably want to look for a dedicated mattress for heavy people.
Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130lbs
While it’s certainly supportive, the Helix Twilight might feel a touch too firm for lightweight back sleepers. It will almost definitely feel too firm for lightweight side sleepers, who are likely to experience pressure around the shoulder and hip. The firm feel of this mattress is great news for lightweight stomach sleepers, who should enjoy plenty of support.
Helix Twilight Mattress Construction
Now that you know what it’s like to sleep on top of the Helix Twilight, let’s take a look at what’s inside of it! We’ll review this bed’s construction layer by layer and reveal how different materials influence performance.
Cover
The Helix Twilight features your choice of covers. You can choose from a Breathe Knit cover, which is soft and breathable, or a GlactioTex Cooling Pillow Top upgrade.
Comfort Layers
The primary comfort layer on the Helix Twilight is made from slow-moving Copper Gel Memory Foam. This material offers nice pressure relief while its copper gel infusions keep it from trapping too much body heat. Below this, you’ll find a layer of Helix Responsive Foam with a firm feel. Right underneath this layer, there’s another firm layer of Helix Responsive Foam which keeps you from sinking too far into the bed. While the Copper Gel Memory Foam provides a touch of cushion, the firmer layer underneath has the strongest influence on the bed’s overall feel.
Support Layer
In classic hybrid mattress fashion, the Helix Twilight’s support layer features individually-wrapped coils. Underneath these coils, there’s a base layer of high-density DuraDense Foam that provides structure and support for the mattress overall.
Mattress Height
The Helix Twilight is 12” tall.

Helix Twilight Mattress Performance
While a mattress’s construction, firmness, and feel will tell you a lot about whether it’s a good match for your needs, there are still some additional factors to consider. We put the Helix Twilight through a barrage of tests with regards to temperature regulation, motion transfer, edge support, and more. Let’s see how it performed!
Sleeping Hot Or Cold
The Helix Twilight boasts several design features that mean this mattress shouldn’t trap much heat. The breathable cover allows air to pass through the top of the mattress, while the coils create plenty of room for air to circulate within the mattress. If you’re still worried about sleeping hot, you can upgrade to the Luxe model, which offers even more cooling features.
Motion Transfer
Even though this is a firm, bouncy mattress, the Helix Twilight does a surprisingly good job of minimizing motion transfer across the mattress. That’s thanks to the memory foam layer on top of the mattress, which absorbs movement.
Edge Support
Thanks mainly to its support layer of coils, the Helix Twilight boasts solid edge support. We felt secure while lying down near the edge of this mattress.
Durability
Because the Helix Twilight features high-density foams and long-lasting coils, this should be a very durable mattress.
Off-Gassing
We did observe some initial off-gassing from the Helix Twilight. This should dissipate within a few days.
Noise
At the time of this review, we observed just a touch of noise from the Helix Twilight’s coils. It’s possible this noise could get louder as time goes on.
Sex
The best mattress for sex makes it easy for partners to change positions on top of the bed. The Helix Twilight should be a great fit thanks to its firm, bouncy feel. Partners shouldn’t feel stuck in this mattress.
Company Policies
Now, let’s take a closer look at the fine print for the Helix Twilight mattress:
Warranty Info

Sleep Trial
You have 100 nights to decide whether the Helix Twilight is the right mattress for you or not.
Return Policy
Helix asks that you try the mattress for 30 nights before you return your mattress. If between 30 and 100 nights, you don’t think the Helix Twiligth mattress is working for you, you can return for a full refund. Just schedule with Helix, and they will pick up the mattress for you.
How Does The Helix Twilight Compare To Other Mattresses?
If you’re shopping for a mattress online, then you’ve probably come across tons of other options. It’s worthwhile to do some comparison shopping, because this helps you feel confident that you’ve landed on the best mattress for your needs. To make things less overwhelming, we’ve brought the comparison to you! We’ve pitted the Helix Twilight head-to-head against two of its biggest competitors: the Nectar and the original Purple mattress.
Also, to see how Helix compares to other mattress brands, take a look at our Helix mattress comparisons.
Helix Vs Nectar
The Helix Twilight and the Nectar boast different constructions: The Helix Twilight is a hybrid mattress that layers foams over coils, while the Nectar is an all-foam mattress that uses memory foam in its comfort layer.
In spite of their different materials, the Helix Twilight and Nectar actually have similar feels. Because they both use memory foam in their top layers, they both have a slow-moving feel right on top of the mattress.
These are both durable mattresses, but the Helix Twilight might last a bit longer thanks to its inclusion of coils.
One significant difference between these two beds is their respective firmness. We ranked the Helix Twilight at 7.5/10, or firmer-than-average, while the Nectar is softer at around 6.5/10--or right around average firmness.
These mattresses also differ a bit when it comes to price. A Queen-size Helix Twilight costs around $999, while the same size Nectar costs a bit more at $1,198.
Who Should Get The Helix Twilight?
- Hot sleepers who need a mattress that sleeps cool
- Folks who are looking to save some money
- People who prefer a firmer mattress
Who Should Get The Nectar?
- People who prefer a plusher memory foam feel
- Side sleepers who need more pressure relief
- Folks who are looking for a slightly softer mattress
Learn more about the Nectar in our comprehensive Nectar mattress review.
Helix Vs Purple
The Helix Twilight and the original Purple mattress differ dramatically when it comes to their respective constructions. The Helix Twilight is a hybrid mattress that layers foams over coils, while the Purple’s comfort layer is made from a unique hyper-elastic gel polymer grid.
Because of their different materials, these beds are also very distinct in terms of feel. The Helix Twilight has a touch of the slow-moving feel that is common to memory foam, while the Purple’s gel grid creates a unique feel that is simultaneously squishy and firm.
These are both durable mattresses, but the Purple is likely to be the longer-lasting of the two. That’s thanks to the hyper-elastic gel polymer grid, which is an exceptionally durable material.
These beds are notably different when it comes to firmness. We ranked the Helix Twilight at 7.5/10, or firmer-than-average, while we ranked the Purple right around average firmness at 6.5/10.
One more difference? Price. The Helix Twilight costs around $999 for a Queen, while the Purple costs a bit more at around $1,149 for the same size.
