Sutera Dream Deep Pillow Firmness and Feel

The first thing you’ll notice about a pillow is its firmness and feel. Let’s go over these two important categories for the Sutera Dream Deep pillow.

How Firm is the Sutera Dream Deep Pillow?

The main body of the Sutera pillow is a single piece of memory foam. I found this pillow to be slightly firmer than medium-firm. Firm pillows usually offer more support, and because the main goal of this pillow is to help support your neck, being firmer than average is a good thing here.

An image of a hand pressing into the Sutera Dream Deep pillow to show off its firmness.

Sleeping on the Sutera Dream Deep Pillow

Each pillow I test has two testing phases: one awake, and one asleep. When I’m awake, I quickly change between each sleeping position to get a good feel for how the pillow will feel in each.

Starting out on my side, I felt a good amount of neck support. You place your neck on a “neck nook” on the tallest part of the pillow. This “neck nook” dips slightly downward to accommodate your neck and head. Because of this, I think the Sutera pillow really shines for side sleepers. The cutouts along the side make for a comfortable spot to rest your arms. I tend to sleep on my side, with the arm I’m resting on usually under the pillow already, so this was a nice addition to the pillow.

A man sleeps on his back while resting on the Sutera Dream Deep pillow.

Moving over to my back, again, the neck nook offers a good amount of support. If you’re a back sleeper, look for a pillow that keeps your chin in line with your chest. You don’t want your chin jutting downwards or too far up. With the Sutera pillow, I felt my neck in its proper alignment, so I would recommend it for back sleepers.

Even though Sutera markets the pillow for all three sleeping positions, I wouldn’t recommend this pillow for stomach sleeping. While the cutouts along the side are great for a place to put your arms while you sleep, when I moved to this position, I felt my neck craning upwards, which put some unnecessary strain on it. Research suggests a too-high pillow could potentially contribute to neck pain and waking symptoms.

Be sure to check out our full list of the best pillows for stomach sleepers for more options. But generally, you’ll want something low and flat for this position.

30-60 Min Nap

My second test is a full-on nap test. This is the most real-to-life test we do here at Mattress Clarity, and gives us the most information on a pillow. As I said, I’m a side sleeper, so that’s where I found myself when it came time to take a nap.

One thing about me is I switch sides often during the night. And while the Sutera pillow is really easy to move around on, I actually found that I was able to stay put while I napped. I think this was because my neck felt very supported.

An image of a man sleeping on his side while resting his head on the Sutera Dream Deep pillow.

Personally, I don’t deal a lot with neck pain, so ergonomic pillows usually aren’t for me. But when I woke up from my nap, I didn’t have a crick in my neck and I felt like I was able to get some good rest from it. I’m also someone who tends to sleep hot, but I didn’t notice any hot spots developing on this pillow.

What Does the Sutera Dream Deep Pillow Feel Like?

The foam used for this pillow is not like your traditional memory foam. Whereas traditional foam feels soft, squishy, and slow-moving, the Sutera pillow feels much more responsive. This means that the foam springs back into shape immediately, rather than taking several seconds.

This means that you won’t sink very far into the foam, and the foam is easy to move around on. This is good news if you switch between your back and side while you sleep.

Average-Weight Sleepers – 130 lbs – 230 lbs

Overall, this is a great option for back and side sleepers. For average-weight individuals who are looking for an ergonomic and orthopedic pillow to help with adequate neck support, the Sutera is worthy of consideration. Its firmness, shape, and loft may help keep your spine in proper alignment, which could help prevent neck pain. I wouldn’t really recommend this pillow to stomach sleepers, though, since it has too high of a loft to promote healthy spine alignment for some individuals.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lbs

Heavyweight back and side sleepers can also expect ample support from this pillow. I fall into this category, and I didn’t find that I compressed the pillow too much because of how firm it was. Again, I wouldn’t recommend this to stomach sleepers, however.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lbs

Lightweight side sleepers with neck pain may find what they’re looking for with this pillow. If you’re a lightweight side sleeper with narrow shoulders, though, the pillow could potentially be too tall for you. Similarly, lightweight back sleepers might find the loft too tall because they won’t compress the foam very much. As is the case with the other weight categories, I don’t see this being a good match for lightweight stomach sleepers.

Sutera Dream Deep Pillow Construction

Let’s go over the materials that make up the Sutera Dream Deep pillow.

Cover

The outer cover of the Sutera Dream Deep pillow is 100% polyester. It feels soft and smooth, and it is removable, making it easy to clean and protect the foam.

Core

The inner core of the Sutera pillow is a single piece of memory foam. As mentioned above, it has “butterfly” cutouts along the sides, which allow you to place your arms comfortably along the sides of the pillow.

A close up image of the memory foam core and outer cover of the Sutera Dream Deep pillow.

Height/Loft

The loft of a pillow refers to how tall the pillow is. The Sutera pillow has a unique shape with differing lofts, but at its highest point, the Sutera is 5.5” tall.

Sutera Dream Deep Pillow Performance

We’ve covered some important considerations for pillow purchasing, but there are a few more factors to keep in mind. Let’s go over some additional performance details.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

Sutera mentions that the polyester cover is moisture-wicking. However, outside of that, there aren’t any specific cooling features to this pillow. I tested the pillow for a handful of hours across a couple of days, and during that time, I never really noticed hot spots happen. This is because the foam is supportive and responsive, so you don’t really sink into the pillow. Memory foam often sleeps hot because it reflects your body heat back, so the Sutera shouldn’t have this problem.

I will say, however, because of the lack of specific cooling features, if you are a chronically hot sleeper, or someone who constantly switches over to the cool side of the pillow, this might not be the best choice. Especially since its unique shape doesn’t really lend itself to fitting into a cooling pillowcase. Technically, you could put the Sutera in a standard pillowcase, it just might not fit very well.

Off-Gassing

The Sutera pillow comes compressed in a small fabric bag. Once you remove all the packaging, the pillow will spring into shape fairly quickly. However, it might have a slight chemical smell to it. It’s best to leave the pillow in a well ventilated area for about 24-48 hours if you notice this smell, or have a sensitive nose. After this time, the smell should dissipate and it’ll be ready to use. I did notice a slight smell, but for me, it’s not enough to be much of a bother.

Care Instructions

The outer polyester cover is machine-washable. Sutera recommends washing the cover in cold water with a mild detergent. The brand doesn’t mention any specific drying instructions, but I would recommend hang drying or tumble drying on low heat. The inner foam core is spot clean only.

Allergies

Sutera doesn’t list this pillow as a hypoallergenic pillow. However, both polyester and memory foam are not known for trapping allergens in your sleep environment or triggering allergies. This should be good to use for those with sensitive skin as well.

Company Policies

Let’s take a look at what Sutera offers when you purchase a pillow.

Warranty Info

Sutera does not offer a warranty on the Sutera Dream Deep pillow. This pillow is around $60 after discounts, and with good care, I do expect it to last several years, so this may not be much of an issue to some. However, if you’re someone who prefers to have warranties, just in case of the product arriving with manufacturing defects, something like the TEMPUR-Neck pillow has a 5-year limited warranty, although this pillow does cost more than the Sutera.

Sleep Trial

Whether you buy this pillow through Sutera’s website or through Amazon, you’ll have 30 days from the date it was delivered to you to make return decisions.

Return Policy

If, during that 30-day window, you decide that the Sutera Dream Deep pillow isn’t for you, you can get your refund. Sutera will take a $20 processing fee from the total amount.

How Does Sutera Dream Deep Pillow Compare To Other Pillows?

If you’re on the hunt for an orthopedic or ergonomic pillow, but aren’t sold on the Sutera pillow, let’s see how this pillow stacks up to two other orthopedic pillows, the TEMPUR-Neck and the Med-Cline body pillow system.

Sutera vs Tempur-Pedic

Both the Sutera Dream Deep and TEMPUR-Neck pillows are ergonomically designed pillows that aim to help with neck pain. I’ve tested both, and I think they fit the bill, but where they really differ is in shape and feel.

A man sleeps on his side using the TEMPUR-Neck pillow

I’d consider both to be firm pillows, but if you want that classic, slow-moving memory foam feel to your pillow, then the TEMPUR-Neck is the way to go. It’s made of a single piece of TEMPUR material, which is what most of us think of when we think of memory foam. The Sutera pillow uses foam that springs back into place immediately, which makes it a bit easier to move on. You’ll sleep more “on top” of this pillow, rather than sink too far into it.

The shapes are a bit different, with the TEMPUR-Neck looking like a more traditional neck pillow design, while the Sutera has a sloped design with cutouts on the side to allow for arm space. Finally, if you’re shopping with a budget in mind, the Sutera is a bit more budget-friendly than the TEMPUR-Neck.

Sutera vs MedCline

There are pillows that may help with orthopedic issues and then there are whole body pillow systems like the MedCline Shoulder Relief system. Where the Sutera is a single orthopedic pillow, the MedCline system is three pillows that make up the whole: a C-shaped body pillow, a large wedge pillow with a shoulder gap, and an insert pillow to help fill in that gap.

MedCline Body Pillow Featured Image

The MedCline’s design means you can sleep with or without the wedge. If you choose to sleep with it in its entirety, it’s supposed to help take pressure off of your shoulders, and can even help your head and neck find a neutral alignment. This whole system is rather bulky, so if you’d rather just use a pillow, the Sutera pillow is the way to go. This also makes it a good deal more affordable than the MedCline system, as well.

Sutera Dream Deep Pillow Review

Can you put a pillowcase on the Sutera pillow?

Technically, you can put the Sutera Dream Deep pillow into a standard pillow case. However, it might not fit very well considering the unique shape to the pillow. Sutera designed its polyester outer cover to work as the Dream Deep’s standard pillowcase. It is removable and can be machine-washed for easy care.

What are the benefits of the Sutera Dream Deep pillow?

This pillow is designed for ergonomic support and targets the uppermost part of your spine called the “cervical spine.” This is the area from the base of your head, neck, and upper back. This pillow’s firmness and unique shape are designed to support this area, which could also help those with neck pain.

RELATED: Best Orthopedic Pillows

Is Sutera good for side sleepers?

Yes. After my testing, I would say the Sutera Dream Deep pillow really shines for side sleepers. It has a higher loft (height) than most pillows, and it keeps your head and neck in a neutral alignment while you sleep.

A mattress topper can be a practical solution to a mattress that’s too soft or too firm. This layer of material can change the overall feel of a mattress, add features like pressure relief or motion isolation, and even extend the life of your mattress. But even the best topper won’t last forever.

When you’re ready to get rid of your old topper, it can feel like a big job. You have a few options, but some are far more environmentally friendly than others. Instead of trying to wrestle a 6′ slab of foam into the garbage can, here’s what else you might consider.

What’s the best way to get rid of a mattress topper?

In most cases, the best way to dispose of a mattress topper is to recycle or upcycle it. Memory foam toppers in particular should not be sent to a landfill, because they can release harmful substances as they degrade. Other topper materials, including cotton, down, and wool, can be composted or turned into DIY crafts (like dog beds, pillows, and cushions).

Can You Throw a Mattress Topper in the Trash?

Technically, you can throw most mattress toppers in the trash. But that’s not the case if your topper is made with memory foam. This type of topper can be environmentally damaging if it goes to the landfill because it can release harmful substances as it degrades. Memory foam toppers should be taken to a local recycling center instead, which is better equipped to recycle them.

While it’s still best to recycle or repurpose toppers made with other materials, including down, down alternative, and wool, they aren’t known to leech out chemicals if they go in the trash.

5 Ways to Dispose of an Old Mattress Topper

Different materials will dictate the best ways of disposing of your mattress topper. Whether it’s made with memory foam, down, or wool, here are your options.

Recycle It

Depending on where you live, there may be a local recycling center that will break down and reuse components in your mattress topper. Be prepared to pay a fee for this kind of service, which often includes curbside pick-up. No recycling centers in your area? Look for a local junk removal service instead. These organizations are motivated to recycle toppers and mattresses to minimize fees associated with dumping at landfills.

Return It

If you’re having a hard time finding a local recycling center, try contacting the company that sold you the topper. Some companies offer return and recycling programs to help minimize waste.

Reuse It

Reusing a mattress topper, and particularly the filling, is a great way to reduce waste in our landfills and create something useful. If your topper is made with a fill material like cotton, wool, or down, you might consider upcycling it into a ped bed, pillow, or seat cushions. These materials also work well as shipping packing for delicate items, so you might consider stashing a few bags in the garage for the next time you have something to ship.

Compost It

While you can’t compost a memory foam topper, you can certainly do so with a wool, down, or cotton topper. Wool is an incredibly versatile material with impressive insulating properties. Wool absorbs and stores water, so it can be used around the base of garden plants to improve watering efficiency.

The same is true of cotton. Not only is cotton one of the most recyclable fabrics on the planet, it can be safely composted. If composting isn’t an option for you, look for professional services that recycle old cotton as well. Your old topper could become a brand new one!

Donate It

If your mattress topper is in good shape, you may be able to give it to a friend or family member or post it online as a free item. Some charitable organizations may also be interested in donated toppers. But before you load up the car and drive to your local Goodwill or Salvation Army, make a phone call first. Some places won’t accept these items. Your best bet is to spend some time looking online for options in your area, then contact them directly to ensure they’ll accept used mattress topper donations.

FAQs About Disposing of an Old Mattress Topper

Can you recycle a memory foam mattress topper?

Yes. In fact, recycling your memory foam mattress topper is the best thing to do. Memory foam mattress toppers should not be thrown in the trash, because they can release harmful contaminants as they degrade. Instead, contact local recycling centers or the company from which you purchased the topper for recycling options.

Can I put a mattress topper in the trash?

While some mattress toppers, such as those made with cotton, wool, or down, can technically go in the trash, it’s not the most eco-friendly option. These materials can and should be upcycled, recycled, and in some cases composted.

What can I do with my old memory foam mattress topper?

An old memory foam mattress topper can be recycled, but you have upcycling options as well. The material can be shredded to serve as a filling for pet beds, pillows, and cushions. If you’re the crafty type, it also works well in bean bags or stuffed animals.

Bottom line

Responsibly disposing of your mattress memory largely depends on what it’s made from. Memory foam toppers must be recycled or upcycled to keep harmful substances from leaching into the environment. Toppers made with wool, cotton, or down can be recycled and repurposed as well, extending their lifespan and minimizing waste.

If you’re looking at adding things to your self care routine, you may have heard of weighted blankets. As the name suggests, weighted blankets are blankets that have weight to them. They come in a variety of weight options, from as light as 5 lbs, to as heavy as 40 lbs.

But with this weight comes added materials that don’t always allow for airflow. So, are weighted blankets hot? The short answer is: more often than not, yes. But keep reading to find out the different types of blankets and how hot or cold they might feel.

Types of Weighted Blankets

Weighted blankets come in a few different styles, and I’ll break them down one by one below. But no matter which style you choose, they all have the same goal.

Some benefits of weighted blankets are that they can help people feel safe and calm while they use them. They simulate something called Deep Touch Pressure (DTP), which is just a name to the “hugging sensation” that weighted blankets are known for.

A man sleeps on his side with the Resident Serenity Sleep Weighted Blanket

If you toss and turn during the night, weighted blankets can help you stay in one spot. Because of the DTP sensation, weighted blankets can help your body release more melatonin, which in turn helps you fall asleep and stay asleep.

This is just a quick overview of how weighted blankets can help, but for a more detailed article, be sure to read through our weighted blanket pros and cons. In the end, they are blanketsl, so they usually add some extra warmth. But let’s go over the different styles of weighted blankets, going from coolest to warmest.

Knitted Weighted Blankets

Often called “chunky-knit” weighted blankets, these are exactly what they sound like: weighted blankets that feature a knit design. In my opinion, these are the best weighted blankets for hot sleepers.

Bearaby Tree Napper Weighted Blanket Construction
The Bearaby Tree Napper weighted blanket uses a chunky knit design.

The loops literally open up and allow for airflow. And some knitted weighted blankets, like the Bearaby Tree Napper, contain TENCEL. This is a fabric made from eucalyptus tree pulp, and it’s naturally cooling and moisture-wicking. When you couple this with the open-knit design, there’s not really any danger of overheating.

Duvet-Style Weighted Blankets

This is probably the most popular weighted blanket design. Duvet-style weighted blankets usually have some sort of outer cover and a weighted insert. In some cases, you could use the insert by itself, but the duvet cover protects the weighted insert and helps it stay clean. And the outer, removable covers are usually machine-washable so you don’t have to wash the heavy insert.

A hand pulls out the weighted insert of the Puffy Weighted Blanket.
The Puffy weighted blanket uses a weighted insert inside a soft, minky duvet cover.

This outer cover can be made of a number of materials, from breathable cotton, bamboo, and TENCEL, to warm, minky polyester.

Traditional Weighted Blankets

The “traditional” weighted blanket design is essentially what you find inside of the duvet style blankets, just without corner loops to attach a duvet cover to it. The fabric shell is often sewn through to keep the weighted fill evenly distributed throughout the blanket. This outer shell can be made from a variety of materials, from cotton to polyester. Take a look at our Layla and Baloo reviews to learn more about this type of weighted blanket.

The Baloo weighted blanket does not have an outer cover.

Because you’re relying on just the fabric shell for things like cooling or breathability, these styles of blankets tend to sleep the hottest.

Cooling Weighted Blankets: What to Look For

Let’s cover some of the basics on what to look for in cooling weighted blanket

Breathability

Materials such as cotton, bamboo, and TENCEL feel breathable and cool.. But as I mentioned earlier, knitted weighted blankets tend to be the most breathable; they will literally open up and let air come through. This helps people feel more comfortable and not so stuffy while using a weighted blanket.

But that’s not to say other types of weighted blankets can’t be breathable. While air won’t easily flow through the weighted fill, the material is still important. Plant-based fabrics like cotton and bamboo are  more breathable than synthetic fabrics like polyester.

Cooling Covers

If you want to go with the duvet-style weighted blanket, look for an outer cover that’s made with cooling fabrics like bamboo or TENCEL. In my opinion, these two do a better job at staying cool over cotton, which is really only good for its breathability.

One of the best cooling weighted blankets I’ve reviewed is the LUXOME weighted blanket because it has a bamboo outer cover. I’ll be honest, I’m a bit biased towards bamboo as a whole, but even with the weighted insert, the bamboo cover did a great job at keeping the heat level low. If you’re a hot sleeper like myself, bamboo is a great material to keep you cool.

Moisture-Wicking Materials

If it’s not made clear at this point, plant-based fabrics like bamboo and TENCEL are king when it comes to cooling. Both are moisture-wicking as well, which means they shouldn’t make you feel sweaty. TENCEL is also cool-to-the touch, giving it one leg up over bamboo.

Some polyester materials, however, are designed to fight the heat and keep moisture off of you while you sleep. The Sleep Number True Temp weighted blanket uses a unique polyester material called 37.5 active particle technology. This material can adjust to your body temperature, keeping you warm and cozy when you need it, but when the temperature starts to go up the material will dissipate heat and wick away moisture.

How Heavy Should My Weighted Blanket Be?

Weighted blankets come in a range of weights. The most common weight options are 10, 12, and 15 lbs, but they can be as light as 5 lbs or as heavy as 35 or 40 lbs. With so many options available, it might be confusing on which to pick, especially if this is your first weighted blanket.

The general rule of thumb is to take 10% of your body weight (or divide your body weight by 10) and that’ll be the ideal weight, give or take a pound or two. For example, if you weigh around 225 lbs, 10% of that is 22.5 lbs. You could go either 20 lbs or 25 lbs based on that. But, we also have a weighted blanket calculator to help make it easy for you.

How To Sleep Cooler at Night

So, you’ve got a cooling weighted blanket but still feel a little toasty underneath it all. There are some ways you can cool off while you sleep, in addition to turning on that ceiling fan and cranking down the air conditioner. Let’s cover some different ways you can cool off.

Sleep Naked

Pajamas are nice and comfy when you’re lounging in bed or on the couch, but clothes might add to the heat when you pull over the covers. So, one way you could beat the heat is just shedding that extra layer of fabric.

There are many benefits to sleeping naked, but helping you feel cooler is the important one here. Having your clothes off can help your body regulate temperature, which means you should  feel more comfortable.

RELATED: Should You Sleep Naked?

Get Cooling Sheets

Those materials used for the cooling covers I mentioned above? They make entire sheet sets out of them, too. I sleep with a set of bamboo sheets every night. For the longest time, I slept hot because I used polyester sheets. Making the change to bamboo sheets, in my opinion, is worth it if you’re a chronic hot sleeper.

An image of a man sleeping on his side with the blue Sweet Zzz Bamboo Sheets.

Bamboo feels super soft and almost silk-like, which is a texture I prefer. Cotton, TENCEL, and linen sheets are also great for hot sleepers thanks to their breathability. And when you pair this with the moisture-wicking properties found in bamboo and TENCEL, you won’t sleep hot. I’ve also rounded up a list of our best cooling sheets, if you want some suggestions.

Add a Cooling Mattress Topper

If your bed is a source of heat, but you’re not in a position to get a brand new mattress, investing in a cooling topper is a great, more affordable option. Toppers made with gel-infused memory foam are good for hot sleepers who like a  slow-moving feel. The gel infusion helps pull body heat away, which keeps you from overheating.

Viscosoft mattress topper construction
The ViscoSoft topper uses a gel-infused memory foam

But if you’d rather sleep more “on top” of your mattress, latex toppers are cooling, bouncy, and responsive. Latex toppers are often perforated with holes, which allow for airflow. For more options, we’ve put together a full list of the best cooling mattress toppers we’ve tested.

Try the BedJet Climate Comfort System

If you want to keep the electric bill a bit lower and keep the AC off during the night, but the ceiling fan isn’t cutting it, the BedJet is a good option. It’s basically a small air conditioning unit that you can use in bed. You just hook it up to your mattress and it’ll blow air directly on you to keep you cool.

Get a Cooling Mattress

If you are just ready to gut your whole room and start anew, you may want to get a cooling mattress. More often than not, you’ll want to consider a hybrid bed, which combines both coils and foam for a balance of comfort and support. The coils allow for a lot of airflow and most of the time, the foam will have a gel infusion. Some companies, like Helix and Brooklyn Bedding, will even let you add a cooling cover (albeit for an extra fee) to really get that cooling experience.

Are Weighted Blankets Hot FAQs

How do you stay cool with a weighted blanket?

Go for a knit weighted blanket or use a blanket that has a bamboo outer cover. The knit blankets let air flow through, which helps keep hot spots from forming. Breathable and moisture-wicking fabrics like bamboo are, in general, great for hot sleepers because they won’t make you feel hot and sweaty.

Are weighted blankets OK for summer?

Yes, weighted blankets are OK for summer if they contain cooling and moisture-wicking materials. Look for fabrics such as bamboo or TENCEL, both of which are known for staying cool.

Is it OK to sleep with a weighted blanket every night?

Yes, it’s completely OK and safe to use a weighted blanket every night. The only people that shouldn’t use weighted blankets are those with health concerns or toddlers and babies.  The blankets are too heavy for toddlers and babies. Using the 10% rule, children around 50 lbs and up should be safe to use weighted blankets, given the proper weight option. If you have health concerns, it’s best to consult your doctor about weighted blanket usage.

If you’re a side sleeper looking for a pillow that is comfortable to use with your CPAP machine, the Lundberg could be a good choice. Here’s a quick overview of the pillow.

Family members of those with sleep apnea who are looking for a gift or to help outPeople who don’t prefer firm pillows

Lundberg CPAP Pillow Firmness and Feel

Many people pick pillows based on how firm the pillows are and how they feel. Let’s go over these two important categories for the Lundberg CPAP pillow.

How Firm is the Lundberg CPAP Pillow?

The Lundberg CPAP pillow feels firm and supportive. The foam doesn’t have a lot of give, and it’s pretty dense, so it offers a good amount of neck support.

A hand presses firmly into the Lundberg CPAP pillow to show its firmness.

Sleeping on the Lundberg CPAP Pillow?

As someone who has sleep apnea, my CPAP machine is crucial for my sleep. But finding a comfortable position on a pillow can be challenging for me because of my mask. So, when I saw the Lundberg pillow, I was excited to try it out.

Before I tried the pillow with my mask, I decided to try it out without my mask to get a good feel for how this pillow works in each sleeping position. I also had to figure out which side of the pillow I thought was going to work better for my head and neck. Ultimately, I opted for the taller side because I’m a taller guy and I have some broader shoulders than most.

A man rests on his back while using the Lundberg CPAP pillow.

This side of the pillow works really well for back and side sleepers. When you have a CPAP, it’s easiest to sleep on your back, but I’m a side sleeper, so I wanted to see how the pillow felt on my side. And I gotta say, I think this pillow works the best for side sleepers. The ergonomic design and the height helped keep my head and neck supported in this position.

Moving over to my back, I also felt really comfortable here. Because I don’t sink into the pillow too much, it was also easy to switch over to my back. I think if you’re a stomach sleeper, this pillow could work, but I’d recommend taking out the additional foam booster and switching the pillow over to the smaller side. This will make it shorter as stomach sleepers need short, flat pillows, so doing this will help with that.

30-60 Min Nap

Now, as I mentioned, I need to sleep with a CPAP machine, and the cutouts on the side of the pillow allow room for the mask and hose that connects the mask to the machine, so I loved that. I pulled on my mask and settled in for a quick nap.

Many comments on both Amazon and Lundberg’s website said that the pillow helped prevent air leaks. Air leaks are exactly what they sound like: air leaking out of the machine while you sleep. These are particularly bad because the machine is pumping air into your airways to keep them open. So when air leaks happen, you aren’t getting the proper treatment for sleep apnea. In my experience, this occurs when my pillow pushes my CPAP mask away from my face.

A man sleeps on his side using the Lundberg CPAP machine.

When I slept, I didn’t notice any air leaks happening (they can sometimes cause a loud hissing noise when they do happen), and I woke up from my nap feeling well rested. I slept on my side for the most part, and the pillow’s unique design and multiple grooves helped me feel comfortable with my mask on. I even felt some more neck support than I do with my standard pillows.

My one complaint, which isn’t much of one but it’s worth noting, is that this pillow is really only good for sleeping. It sounds crazy to say, but I do like to read in bed before I sleep, and this pillow doesn’t really let you prop yourself up on your bed. But as far as cons go, there are definitely worse problems to have.

What does the Lundberg CPAP Pillow Feel Like?

Though the entirety of this pillow is made of memory foam, it doesn’t feel like what most of us expect memory foam to feel like. This foam springs back into position immediately after you press your hand into it. This means you won’t sink too far into this pillow.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lbs – 230 lbs

This pillow really shines for back and side sleepers who use a CPAP while they sleep. It’s firm and supportive enough for both sleeping positions. Those on the lighter end of this spectrum, or those who have narrower shoulders, may want to remove the booster to make it a little lower for side sleeping. I think this pillow could work for stomach sleepers, but overall, it wouldn’t be my top recommendation.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lbs

Heavier folks like myself might compress the pillow a bit more than others. I kept the pillow as is and felt really comfortable sleeping on my side. I’m also a pretty tall guy, and my shoulders are broad, so having the extra height really helped. I think heavyweight back sleepers should feel comfortable as well. If you remove the booster, heavyweight stomach sleepers with CPAP machines might feel comfortable, but again, this isn’t my first choice for stomach sleeping.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lbs

This should also be a good choice for lightweight sleepers who use CPAPs and need a pillow to help stay comfortable and prevent air leaks. If you have narrow shoulders, I recommend removing the booster and sleeping on the shorter side for back and side sleeping.

Lundberg CPAP Pillow Construction

Let’s take a look at the materials that go into the Lundberg CPAP pillow.

Cover

The Lundberg CPAP pillow comes with two covers: a standard cover that is already on the pillow when you unbox it and a special cooling cover. Both of these are made from a soft polyester material. Both act as standard cases, so you won’t have to worry about trying to fit the pillow inside of a traditional pillow case.

Core

The main core of the pillow is a two pieces of memory foam that has a unique, ergonomic shape and has cutouts to accommodate your CPAP machine. There’s the bulk of the pillow itself, and the second piece is an additional foam booster.

An image showing the Lundberg CPAP pillow and its foam booster.

Height/Loft

The Lundberg CPAP pillow has a sloped design, and the tallest part of this pillow is roughly 6” tall. The shorter side is about 4”. The height can be adjusted by removing the bottom foam insert, which is about 1” thick.

Lundberg CPAP Pillow Performance

Let’s go over some other important performance considerations about the Lundberg CPAP pillow.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

On its own, the Lundberg pillow doesn’t have any specific cooling features. The foam doesn’t have a cooling gel infusion, and the polyester cover might not be the most breathable. Overall, I didn’t notice a lot of heat buildup, but if you’re a hot sleeper, you should put on the cooling cover.

Off-Gassing

The Lundberg pillow is not compressed into its packaging. However, many memory foam products may have a slight chemical smell to them right out of the box, which is mostly a result of the packaging process. There might be a slight smell to this pillow right out of the box, but if you leave it in a well ventilated area for about 24-48 hours, the smell should be gone. Personally, I didn’t notice any smell, but it’s worth mentioning for those with sensitive noses.

Care Instructions

Lundberg doesn’t list any specific care instructions on the brand website. However, the Amazon listing mentions that the covers are hand-wash only. If you start to see sweat stains, or notice that the cover is looking particularly dirty, wash it with warm water and a small amount of detergent. I would also recommend letting it hang dry.

Allergies

While not listed as a hypoallergenic product, memory foam is not known to trap or attract allergens in your sleep environment. You can also remove the outer covers and hand wash them to remove dirt, dust, and sweat.

Company Policies

Let’s take a look at what you can expect in terms of company policies when you order a Lundberg pillow. Note that we got our sample from Amazon, so we will be listing what Amazon offers as well, but you can order directly from Lundberg.

Warranty Info

Lundberg offers a one-year warranty on the CPAP pillow. There is a section on Lundberg’s website to register your pillow for the warranty. There isn’t an option to apply for the warranty through Amazon.

Sleep Trial

While not an official trial period, you’ll have 30 days, from the day it arrives on your doorstep, to make return or exchange decisions.  This applies to purchases on both Amazon and Lundberg’s website.

Return Policy

If, during the 30-day window, you decide that the Lundberg CPAP pillow is not for you, you can issue a return. Lundberg offers free shipping on all orders and returns. Again, this applies to purchases on both Amazon and Lundberg’s website.

How Does the Lundberg CPAP Pillow Compare to Other Pillows?

The Lundberg CPAP pillow is highly specific and specialized. But there are plenty of other ergonomic pillows available for those who are on the hunt for relief, be it shoulder pain or neck pain. Let’s compare the Lundberg CPAP pillow to the Eli & Elm Side Sleeper pillow and the TEMPUR-Neck pillow.

Lundberg vs Eli & Elm

These days, there are many pillows with unique designs that are intended for side sleepers. The Eli & Elm side sleeper pillow has a U-shaped cutout on one side of the pillow which allows room for your shoulder. While the Lundberg pillow doesn’t feature a spot for your shoulder, its height makes it a good option for many side sleepers. Both pillows should be able to keep your head and neck supported while side sleeping.

eli & elm - best pillows for side sleepers 2020

But the pillows have different materials. The Lundberg pillow is a single piece of memory foam with cutouts that leave room for your CPAP machine. The Eli & Elm pillow is made of shredded latex noodles which gives it a soft, springy feel. Both pillows are responsive, but the Lundberg pillow is much firmer.

The Eli & Elm pillow is not designed specifically for those with CPAP machines like the Lundberg is.If you prefer something more similar to a traditional pillow design, the Eli & Elm could be a good choice.

People who want a firm pillowFans of springy latex pillows

Lundberg vs Tempur-Pedic

Oftentimes, side sleepers who deal with neck pain either have a pillow that’s too tall or too short. This can cause your neck to get out of its neutral alignment, which can lead to neck pain. One of the more popular pillows for neck pain relief is the TEMPUR-Neck pillow from Tempur-Pedic. This pillow features Temper-Pedic’s proprietary TEMPUR material, which is that classic, slow-moving memory foam most people think of.

A man rests on his back using the TEMPUR-Neck Pillow.

The Lundberg pillow is also made entirely of foam, but the foam feels a bit different than the TEMPUR-Neck. It springs back into place almost immediately, unlike the TEMPUR-Neck, which slowly returns to its original shape. And while the TEMPUR-neck isn’t designed specifically to aid with sleep apnea, its unique, ergonomic design might allow for some comfort if you’re using a CPAP machine.

Both pillows offer standard covers and cooling covers, but the TEMPUR-Neck’s cooling cover comes at an extra fee, while Lundberg’s is included.

Lundberg CPAP Machine FAQs

What is the difference between a CPAP pillow and a regular pillow?

CPAP pillows are designed to be used with CPAP machines. They often have cutouts which allow room for your mask and the hose that attaches the mask to the main CPAP machine. This should help sleeping with the CPAP machine feel more comfortable. It also helps prevent air leaks that may happen due to a regular pillow pushing your mask off while you sleep.

Does the Lundberg CPAP pillow actually work?

The unique and ergonomic design of the Lundberg CPAP pillow helped because my mask was able to fit comfortably on this pillow. So, yes, I’d say they work. I didn’t notice any air leaks while I slept.

What’s the best pillow for CPAP machines?

The Lundberg pillow is a great choice for those who sleep with a CPAP machine. However, if the unique shape to this pillow doesn’t look like it’ll fit your needs, we have a full list of the best pillows for sleep apnea that may offer what you need.

People tend to spend a lot of time researching their mattress purchase, but the bed frame also deserves consideration, too. It’s what offers sufficient support and structure to your mattress, helping it perform at its best.

Bed frames come in lots of styles. You can find a bed frame with or without a headboard and in various heights to suit different preferences. Beyond finding a frame that will accommodate your mattress size, here’s what else to keep in mind as you shop.

Types of Bed Frames

Finding the right bed frame begins with choosing the right style. Let’s take a look at five of the most common bed frame types.

Platform

Pros
Minimalist, modern aesthetic with broad appeal
Low profile increases stability
Cons
Heavy construction makes them hard to move
Low profile can make getting in and out of bed challenging

Platform bed frames are generally designed without a headboard or a footboard. It’s a modern, minimalist style often available in wood or metal. Unlike other bed frame styles, platform beds serve as the only support for the mattress, with no need for a box spring or a foundation. They’re available in all mattress sizes.

Panel

Pros
Traditional option, comes in multiple sizes and styles
Tend to be affordable
Typically higher profile, easier to get in and out of
Cons
Require a box spring or foundation, which can add cost
Typically don’t have a modern look

A panel bed frame is a traditional style that uses railed support on either side, with a headboard and footboard. The mattress is supported with wide slats, on which a foundation or box spring rests. These bed frames are also available in all sizes. They’re sturdy and stable, and they’re often affordably priced.

Sleigh

Pros
Elegant and sophisticated look
Sturdy design
Cons
Oversized design isn’t for everyone
Require more space and are typically expensive
Typically heavy, so harder to move

Sleigh bed frames are generally made of wood (though they can also be upholstered) and feature curved headboards and footboards, with either a panel or platform base. These decorative bed frames are durable, but they’re also heavy. That can make them hard to move. Sleigh frames can accommodate all mattress sizes.

Four-Poster

Pros
Can draw eye upward, making small spaces seem bigger
Can add a canopy to keep sleep space warmer, darker, and quieter
Cons
Large frames, so they’ll take up more space
Tend to be expensive
Often require more maintence and cleaning

Four-poster bed frames are a classic style with four posts or pillars on all four corners, along with side panels, and often a headboard and footboard. Four-poster frames are often decorated with canopies or curtains. They have a striking aesthetic, but they take up a lot of room and vertical space.

Adjustable

Pros
Good option for folks who experience back pain, mobility issues, or snoring
Work well for couples with different sleeping preferences
May come with luxury featurs, like massage functions
Cons
Usually quite heavy
Often expensive
Not compatible with all mattresses

Adjustable bed frames make it possible to customize the position of your mattress, including raising and lowering the head and foot. They’re generally powered by motors and controlled with wired or wireless remotes. These frames usually come with a range of features and options, but they can be expensive.

Wood vs Metal Bed Frames

The material your bed frame is made of is also important because it can affect.

Metal frames tend to be lightweight, low-maintence, and durable, without the potential for warping that may occur with wooden frames. The weakest points of a metal bed are the welded joints, which could bend or break. They can also be noisy, but tend to be an affordable option.

Wooden frames often have a warmer, more classic aesthetic. They’re also easy to maintain and come in many styles and finishes. They’re also sturdy and offer great support for a mattress. But they can be more expensive and they’re often heavy.

Who May Prefer a Wood Frame?

  • Those looking for a classic aesthetic
  • Those who want a durable, supportive option

Who May Prefer a Metal Frame?

  • Those on a budget
  • Those who like to rearrange their bedroom furniture
  • Those who like a modern, industrial aesthetic

How to Pick the Right Bed Frame for Your Mattress

Bed frame sizes correspond to mattress sizes, which means you’ll need a Queen-size frame for your Queen-size mattress. Beyond that, choosing the right bed frame comes down to personal preferences, budgetary considerations, and logistics. If space is at a premium, for example, a slimmer bed frame, like a platform bed, is likely a better choice than a four-poster.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are standard bed frame sizes?

Standard bed frame sizes correspond to mattress sizes:

  • Twin: 40-43” x 77-80”
  • Twin XL: 40-43” x 82-85”
  • Full: 56-59” x 77-80”
  • Queen: 62-65” x 82-85”
  • King: 78-81” x 82-85”
  • Cal king: 74-77” x 86-89”

How do you measure bed frames?

Bed frames are measured from head to foot to determine length and side to side to determine width. You can also measure from the floor to the top of the headboard to determine height.

Do you need a bed frame?

Most folks will prefer to have a bed frame. Bed frames support your mattress to ensure it can perform properly. They also raise your bed off the floor, which helps keep it clean and makes it easier to get in and out of bed. Bed frames also add style to your bedroom.

Bottom Line

Bed frames come in all materials, styles, shapes, and sizes. There are pros and cons to different frame styles, and it’s worth considering your options carefully. Ultimately, your decision should be based on your budget, room size, and personal preferences.

PlushBeds Latex Sofa Bed Mattress: General Overview

Pros of the PlushBeds Latex Sofa Bed

  • Because it’s made out of latex, it’s durable and long-lasting. If used regularly, I expect it to last about 10 years.
  • It’s made with high-quality and eco-friendly materials, such as organic latex and cotton.
  • It’s backed by a 100-night sleep trial period and 10-year warranty, which is not common for many sofa bed mattresses.
  • It’s breathable, so it works well for people who tend to overheat at night.

Cons of the PlushBeds Latex Sofa Bed Mattress

  • It’s pricier than most sofa bed mattresses, so it may not work for everyone’s budget.
  • It’s quite thick, so it may not work with everyone’s sofa bed.
  • Even though it’s more comfortable than most sofa beds, it may not be suitable for long-term use. It lacks the support of a traditional latex mattress, which could lead tolower back pain over time.

What Does the PlushBeds Latex Sofa Bed Mattress Feel Like?

I always pay close attention to a mattress’s firmness and feel. Let’s take a closer look.

PlushBeds Latex Sofa Bed Firmness and Feel

The Mattress Clarity firmness scale ranges from 1-10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest. I rated the PlushBeds Latex Sofa Bed Mattress a 6.5/10, which is the industry standard of medium-firm.

When I rested on my back, I felt supported and comfortable. The latex foam hugged my hips and gently cushioned my lower back.

Because the PlushBeds Sofa Bed Mattress isn’t as thick as a traditional mattress, it didn’t offer a lot of pressure relief when I rested on my side. I felt my shoulder sink through the latex foam, which put a bit of strain on my joint. If you’re a side sleeper, you may want to put a mattress topper on this mattress to get more cushioning.

If you weigh less than 130 lbs, you may feel comfortable while stomach sleeping. I weigh more than this, and I didn’t get the support that I needed when I rested on my stomach. I felt my hips sink out of alignment, which put some pressure on my lower back.

PlushBeds Latex Sofa Bed Construction

The PlushBeds Latex Sofa Bed Mattress is surrounded by an organic cotton cover. The outer layer not only feels soft and luxurious – it also promotes airflow and helps you stay cool.

Beneath the cover sits a 4.5” piece of organic latex foam. This material offers a nice balance of comfort and support, and it’s naturally breathable.

PlushBeds Latex Sofa Bed Mattress Performance

I put the PlushBeds Latex Sofa Bed Mattress through a number of tests to assess its cooling features, durability, and more. Let’s take a closer look.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

When I slept on this mattress, I didn’t feel hot at all. The responsive latex foam kept me from “sinking inside” the mattress, so it didn’t trap body heat. If you tend to overheat at night, this is a good option.

Motion Transfer

Sofa bed mattresses, in general, don’t isolate motion well. That’s because they typically sit on top of shaky foundations, and the mattresses aren’t very thick. When I tested this mattress with my partner, I felt his movements come over to my side of the bed. For this reason, it may not be the best mattress for couples.

Edge Support

When I sat along the side of the PlushBeds Latex SofaBed Mattress, I felt the foam compress quite a bit. It doesn’t have great edge support, which is to be expected. It’s only 4.5” thick, so it won’t offer the same edge support as a 10-15” mattress.

Durability

For a sofa bed mattress, it’s quite durable. Latex foam is one of the most dense and durable mattress materials on the market. If used on a regular basis, I expect this mattress to last about 10 years.

Noise

This mattress doesn’t contain coils, so it doesn’t make sound whenever you move around on it. That said, the foundation underneath it might make sound if you move around a lot during the night.

How Do You Set Up the PlushBeds Latex Sofa Bed Mattress?

First, you’ll need to unbox the mattress by removing the outer plastic cover. Because this mattress contains eco-friendly materials, I didn’t notice a strong off-gassing odor. Traditional mattresses usually take about 48 hours to fully expand, but because the PlushBeds Sofa Bed Mattress is much thinner, it only took about two hours to reach its full form.

After I unboxed the mattress, I placed it on top of my couch’s pull-out foundation. This mattress is much thicker than the one the couch came with, so it was a little bit difficult to push back into the sofa. I had to wedge the mattress back into the interior compartment and use some muscle. I noticed the latex foam bulging out a little on the sides, but because latex is so durable, I’m not worried about that compromising the overall quality.

PlushBeds Company Policies

Now, let’s take a look at PlushBeds’ company policies.

Trial period

The PlushBeds Latex Sofa Bed has a 100-night sleep trial period. That means you have about three months to test the mattress and decide whether you want to keep it. PlushBeds requires customers to try out the mattress for 30 days before issuing a return, though, because it can sometimes take people a few weeks for their body to get used to a new bed.

Returns

You can issue a return between days 30 and 100 of owning the mattress. After your return is accepted, you’ll receive a full refund.

Warranty

The PlushBeds Latex Sofa Bed mattress is backed by a 10-year limited warranty. If, during the first five years, you discover a manufacturing defect, PlushBeds will replace your mattress for free. During the last five years of the warranty, PlushBeds may repair the defective mattress at their discretion.

Shipping

PlushBeds offer fast and free shipping for all orders.

FAQs

Can you make a sofa bed more comfortable?

If you don’t want to purchase a new sofa bed mattress, you can make your current bed feel more comfortable by adding a mattress topper. Toppers help cushion joints and offer pressure relief.

How thick should a sleeper sofa mattress be?

The most comfortable sofa mattresses are between 4-5” thick. Thinner mattresses usually don’t offer enough comfort and support.

Do you need a special mattress for a sleeper sofa?

Yes, you do. Sofa bed mattresses are designed to fit on pull-out couch foundations and fold away easily. If you put a traditional mattress on a pull-out couch, it won’t work well.

Finding a comfortable sleep position is key to getting enough restful sleep. But if you can’t ever seem to find that comfortable position, there could be a simple solution. Sleeping with a pillow between your knees can be beneficial for side sleepers and anyone looking to improve their sleep posture and overall sleep quality.

Keep reading to learn more about the benefits of sleeping with a pillow between your knees and how to choose a pillow to sleep comfortably in this position.

Benefits of Sleeping With a Pillow Between Your Knees

Sleeping with a pillow between your knees can be helpful for some people. Let’s take a closer look at the benefits of this sleep position.

Maintain Sleep Posture

Sleeping with a pillow between your knees can help improve your sleep posture, which can help prevent back and hip pain. Side sleepers can improve their sleep posture by filling the gap between their legs with a supportive pillow to keep the hips and pelvis symmetrically aligned with the spine.

Help Alleviate Muscle and Joint Pain

If you deal with muscle or joint pain in your hips or legs, try placing a pillow between your knees.  This can help support the weight of your legs and take the pressure off of your lower back and hips, which could help relieve aches and stiffness. If you have knee pain, you may benefit from the additional comfort of a pillow to prevent your knees from touching.

Prevent Tossing and Turning

If you’re feeling restless and unable to find a comfortable sleeping position, a pillow between your knees can help keep you from tossing and turning. Depending on the size and shape, a pillow can help keep you in one comfortable position all night long.

Help Modify Your Sleep Position

Side sleeping is a commonly recommended sleep position to help relieve muscle or joint pain and reduce snoring. If you want to give side sleeping a try but don’t know how to start, a pillow between your knees can help. A pillow in this position keeps you from shifting to your back or stomach and can help form the habit of side sleeping.

A man sleeps on his side, resting his head on the FluffCo down & feather pillow.

Improve Blood Circulation

One of the benefits of side sleeping is that it increases blood circulation throughout your body.

You might have poor circulation in your legs if you experience a numbing sensation or swollen limbs when you wake up. Elevating your leg with a pillow can promote blood flow and help prevent varicose veins from developing.

Who Should Sleep With a Pillow Between Their Knees?

Here’s a closer look at who might want to consider sleeping with a pillow between their knees.

People with Back Pain

An estimated 75-85% of adults experience back pain at some point in their life, and a 2019 survey found around 8% of Americans deal with chronic severe back pain. Back pain can be caused by a medical condition, strained muscles, or poor spinal alignment.

Side sleepers with back pain can place a pillow between their knees to help align their spine, hips, and pelvis and help prevent strain on their back muscles. This position also takes pressure off the lower back by supporting the legs and keeping the pelvis from rotating during the night.

RELATED: How to Sleep with Back Pain

People with Hip Pain

Like back pain, hip pain can be caused by misalignment or poor sleep posture. Placing a pillow between your knees can improve your sleep posture by preventing your hips from twisting in your sleep. The pillow helps keep your legs comfortably stacked on top of each other, which can  help reduce hip strain and aching joints. Keep in mind that side sleeping may not be a comfortable position for all people with hip pain.

RELATED: How to Sleep with Hip Pain

People with Scoliosis

For those with scoliosis, it’s especially important to keep the shoulders, spine, and hips neutrally aligned as you sleep. A knee pillow can lift your upper leg into neutral alignment when you’re lying on your side, and it can help prevent your body from twisting in your sleep.

People with Sciatica

Those with sciatica may struggle to sleep comfortably due to lower back, hip, and leg pain. Sciatic pain is usually felt on one side of the body, and side sleeping can help reduce strain on the sciatic nerve. A knee pillow can help take pressure off your sciatic nerve and help keep your spine, hips, and pelvis aligned.

People with Sleep Apnea

Those with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) can utilize positional therapy as an intervention approach to reduce snoring. Doctors recommend that those with sleep apnea sleep on their side to take pressure off their airways. Body pillows or knee pillows can help train people with OSA to stay positioned on their side throughout the night.

Pregnant People

Side sleeping is also the recommended sleep position for pregnant people. With a growing baby bump, pregnant people will likely experience lower back pain and discomfort while trying to fall asleep. To relieve lower back pain and increase blood circulation, the American Pregnancy Association recommends sleeping with your legs slightly bent with a pillow between your knees. Using a pregnancy pillow is another way to sleep comfortably on your side and find full body support while you are pregnant.

Drawbacks of Sleeping With a Pillow Between Your Knees

While sleeping with a pillow between the knees can be beneficial for many people, it may not be helpful for everyone. Here are a few reasons why this configuration might not work for you.

May Cause More Discomfort

Some people may feel pressure around their hips and knees in this position, especially if they have pre-existing pain in those areas. If sleeping with a pillow between your knees worsens your hip or knee pain, then we don’t recommend continuing to sleep in this position.

May Impair Pelvic Alignment

Placing the wrong pillow between your knees can bring your hips out of neutral alignment. For example, a tall, dense pillow could lift your leg too high and create discomfort. You may want to consider placing an adjustable pillow between your knees, such as the COOP Original. By adding or removing the filling, you can easily get the pillow to the best height for you.

Traps Body Heat

Just like some mattresses, pillows can also trap body heat. A pillow made from dense, non-breathable materials, such as memory foam, can absorb the heat between your legs and make you feel uncomfortable. Take a look at our list of the best cooling pillows for some breathable options.

Takes Up Space

Whether the pillow between your knees is a standard size or a body pillow, an additional pillow will occupy space in your bed. This is something to keep in mind if you sleep with a partner. Although keeping a pillow between your knees is meant to keep you in a stable sleep position, it might also restrict your partner’s movements.

How to Choose a Knee Pillow

When it comes to knee pillows, some are better than others. You will want to choose a pillow that has the proper amount of support and the right loft, or height, depending on your frame. Knee pillows come in a few shapes and sizes, and some are contoured to the gap between your legs. Hot sleepers may want to consider getting a pillow with cooling features so that their legs don’t overheat during the night.

The Best Knee Pillows

Here are a few pillows on the market designed to provide full-body support and help you achieve neutral spine alignment.

COOP Sleep Goods Body Pillow

The COOP Sleep Goods body pillow has a shredded memory foam filling and is a good fit for all three sleep positions. It has an adjustable loft, so sleepers can customize it to their needs.

Coop Home Goods Original Pillow

Boppy Side Sleeper Pregnancy Pillow

The Boppy is a versatile pregnancy pillow that can be used in several ways, including between the knees while side sleeping. It consists of two pillows that are connected by a removable outer cover. This is a great pregnancy pillow for people looking for lower back pain relief or belly support.

Snoogle

The Snoogle is a C-shaped pregnancy pillow that wraps around your entire body. Side sleepers can wrap the Snoogle around their shoulders and between their legs to help achieve neutral spine alignment and keep from tossing and turning. It also replaces the need for pregnant people to sleep with multiple pillows at once to support their bodies.

FAQs

Does sleeping with a pillow between your legs help knock knees?

Sleeping with a pillow between your legs may help alleviate joint pain caused by knock knees. A pillow can also prevent knock knees from stacking on top of each other, which may be painful. However, knock knees cannot be treated or corrected by sleeping with a pillow between your legs.

Does sleeping with a pillow between your legs fix posture?

One benefit of sleeping with a pillow between your knees is that it may improve sleep posture while side sleeping. A pillow can fill in the gap between your knees and help keep your hips and pelvis in neutral alignment with your spine.

Does sleeping with a pillow between your legs help circulation?

Yes, sleeping with a pillow between your legs while lying on your side can help blood circulation. Side sleeping promotes blood flow to your limbs while keeping your internal organs protected. Elevating your legs with a pillow also improves circulation by using gravity to assist blood flow back to the heart.

Can sleeping with a pillow between your legs help you grow?

It’s a common misconception that sleeping with a pillow between your legs can help you grow taller, but this is untrue. Sleeping with a pillow between your legs can improve your spinal alignment as you sleep, which may indirectly affect your posture. Improved posture might give the appearance of growing taller, but it’s not directly caused by a knee pillow.

PlushBeds MobilePlush Mattress Review: General Overview

The PlushBeds MobilePlush mattress is a memory foam mattress that’s certified by both CertiPUR-US and GreenGuard Gold. According to PlushBeds, it’s a patented and premium memory foam mattress designed to provide support, relieve pressure and, notably, keep you cooler out on the road.

Let’s take a look at the mattress’s pros and cons.

Pros of the PlushBeds MobilePlush Mattress

  • It offers a good balance of comfort and support for average-weight and lightweight back sleepers.
  • It’s a good pick for fans of a balanced foam feel.
  • At only six inches in height, it’s a thin mattress and comes in RV-specific sizes, so it should fit most RVs.

Cons of the PlushBeds MobilePlush Mattress

  • While it is a memory foam mattress, it doesn’t have a traditional memory foam feel.
  • It’s likely too thin to provide enough support for folks who weigh more than 230 lbs.
  • Stomach sleepers who weigh over 130 lbs will probably need a firmer mattress, as this doesn’t have sufficient support to keep their hips elevated.

PlushBeds MobilePlush Firmness and Feel

Since firmness and feel directly affect comfort, here’s what to know about how it feels to sleep on the PlushBeds MobilePlush mattress.

How Firm is the PlushBeds MobilePlush Mattress?

This is a noticeably firm mattress. On our firmness scale, with 1 being the softest, I rated the MobilePlush a 7/10. That’s slightly firmer than what we’d consider medium-firm.

Sleeping on the PlushBeds MobilePlush Mattress

Back sleepers, excluding those who weigh more than 230 lbs, will likely find this mattress to be a good fit. But it lacks the support heavier sleepers need to avoid dipping too deeply into the mattress.

Sleeping on my side, I found myself pressing in too far, leading to pressure on my hips and shoulders. When I rolled onto my stomach, the mattress simply wasn’t firm enough to properly elevate my hips. At 270 pounds, I compress the mattress more than lightweight and average-weight sleepers, but the PlushBeds likely won’t be supportive enough for all but the lightest of stomach sleepers.

What Does the PlushBeds MobilePlush Mattress Feel Like?

For a memory foam mattress, the MobilePlush has a balanced foam feel. You sink in a bit, but it’s responsive enough to move around and change positions easily.

Sleeper WeightBack SleepersSide SleepersStomach Sleepers
Lightweight (under 130 lbs)GoodGoodGood
Average (130-230 lbs)FairPoorPoor
Heavyweight (over 230 lbs)PoorPoorPoor

Is the PlushBeds MobilePlush Mattress Good For Lightweight Sleepers (Under 130 lbs)?

  • Lightweight back sleepers should get enough support.
  • Side sleepers in this weight range should also get the pressure relief they need.
  • Very light stomach sleepers will likely find this mattress supportive.

Is the PlushBeds MobilePlush Mattress Good For Average-Weight Sleepers (130-230 lbs)?

  • This mattress is a decent match for average-weight back sleepers.
  • Side sleepers in this weight range will probably bottom out, leading to pressure on the hips and shoulders.
  • Stomach sleepers likely won’t get enough support.

Is the PlushBeds MobilePlush Mattress Good For Heavyweight Sleepers (Over 230 lbs)?

  • Heavyweight back sleepers shouldn’t expect to get enough support and should consider a hybrid or innerspring mattress.
  • Heavyweight side sleepers will probably bottom out, just like average-weight sleepers.
  • Stomach sleepers above 230 lbs will likely find that they sink too far into the mattress and could feel some back pain after sleeping on this mattress.

PlushBeds MobilePlush Mattress Construction

Wondering what exactly goes into an RV mattress? Here’s a breakdown of the MobilePlush mattress.

Cover

The MobilePlush mattress has a deluxe stretch knit cover.

Comfort Layers

This mattress is made with open-cell, high-density memory foam. This type of foam contains lots of small airways for heat to move away from your body rather than getting trapped in the mattress. Its foam is designed to be durable and hypoallergenic as well.

Support Layers

While many mattresses feature layers of materials for both comfort and support, the MobilePlush is a single layer of memory foam designed to be both supportive and cushioning.

Mattress Height

As an RV mattress, the MobilePlush is only 6” tall.

PlushBeds MobilePlush Mattress Performance

To see how the MobilePlush mattress performs, I tested features such as temperature regulation, motion transfer, edge support, and more.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

For an all-foam bed, I found that this mattress sleeps quite cool. That’s thanks to the open-celled foam and Multiphase Transition Range technology, which help channel heat away from the body instead of letting it build up during the night.

Motion Transfer

I saw very little motion transfer on this mattress. Memory foam typically does a great job of isolating motion, and this mattress is no exception. This makes it a good option for couples looking for a bed that can help dampen any nighttime disturbances from their partner’s movement.

Edge Support

Memory foam tends to lack edge support, so it was no surprise the MobilePlush mattress has very poor edge support. It collapsed completely when I sat near the edge. That’s an important consideration for anyone with mobility issues or couples who share a bed and need to maximize sleep space.

PlushBeds MobilePlush edge support

Durability

Although the MobilePlush is made of high-density foam, it’s still a thin all-foam bed. This tends to mean a relatively limited lifespan. It should last for at least 7 years with regular use, but I don’t expect it to last as long as other bed-in-a-box mattresses. If you’re only sleeping on the mattress when you take the occasional RV trip, though, I wouldn’t expect it to wear out as quickly.

Off-gassing

Off-gassing isn’t uncommon with boxed foam mattresses. There was a bit of a chemical smell when I unboxed the MobilePlush mattress, but it went away after a few days.

Noise

The MobilePlush mattress made no noise at all. Since it lacks coils, it never should.

Sex

The balanced foam feel should make this a decent mattress for sex. But because it lacks a coil layer, it’s not comparable to a hybrid or innerspring, which tend to be much easier for sexual partners to move around on.

PlushBeds MobilePlush Company Policies

It’s always helpful to understand company policies relating to warranties, sleep trials, and returns. Here’s what PlushBeds offers on its MobilePlush mattress.

Warranty

The mattress has a 20-year warranty.

Sleep Trial

PlushBeds offers a 100-night sleep trial on its MobilePlush mattress.

Return Policy

If you decide the mattress isn’t a good fit, you can return it after the first 30 days of your sleep trial and before it concludes for a full refund minus a $149 transportation fee. This fee covers a concierge mattress removal service. If you prefer to return the mattress using your own shipping service, PlushBeds will waive the $149 fee.

Note that custom orders cannot be returned.

Common PlushBeds MobilePlush Mattress Complaints

While the MobilePlush mattress has a number of great reviews, there were also a few complaints. Some customers experienced premature sagging with their MobilePlush mattress, while others experienced delivery issues.

How Does The PlushBeds MobilePlush Compare To Others

If you’re researching mattresses for your RV or camper, here’s how the MobilePlush compares to other brands and models on the market.

PlushBeds MobilePlush vs Dreamfoam Essential RV Mattress

The Dreamfoam Essential RV is an all-foam bed that is available in multiple heights and firmnesses, while the PlushBeds MobilePlush only comes in one height and comfort level. At a 7/10 on our firmness scale, it’s a bit firmer than medium-firm. If you prefer to choose a different firmness, you’ll have more options with the Dreamfoam.

The 6” model of the Dreamfoam is also more affordable than the MobilePlush.

PlushBeds MobilePlush vs Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe

The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe is a much more substantial mattress than the MobilePlush and includes both coils and a pillow top. You can also choose from multiple firmnesses. It comes in a wide range of sizes, including RV sizes.

The PlushBeds MobilePlush is thinner and able to fit in tighter RV spaces. It is also more affordable.

PlushBeds MobilePlush FAQs

Is the PlushBeds MobilePlush a good mattress?

The PlushBeds MobilePlush is a good mattress, but it’s going to work better for back sleepers who weigh less than 230 lbs, fans of a balanced foam feel, and those who need a thinner mattress for their RV. People who weigh more than 230 lbs and those who like a memory foam feel should probably look elsewhere.

What is the lifespan of a PlushBeds MobilePlush mattress?

Thanks to its high-density foam, I expect the MobilePlush to last for at least 7 years.

Are PlushBeds mattresses good for your back?

Yes, a number of the PlushBeds mattresses will work for back sleeping. If you need something for your RV, the MobilePlush will be a good choice for back sleepers who weigh less than 230 lbs.

LUXOME is known for crafting luxurious bedding products, but that’s not the company’s only area of expertise. The brand recently launched a line of loungewear that’s comfy, stylish, and durable.

My colleague Tony Klespis and I personally tested the LUXOME loungewear and assessed the fit, comfort, price point, and more. Keep reading for the full scoop.

How We Tested These Products

My coworker, Tony, and I have tested a variety of products, ranging from mattresses to sheets to loungewear. For this LUXOME loungewear review, I tested the LUXOME women’s tunic and wide-leg pant. Tony tested the men’s crew shirt and joggers.

Both of us spent several hours in the clothes before writing the reviews. We paid close attention to the feel, durability, comfort, and style of the loungewear.

The LUXOME Women’s Essential Tunic is made with modal fleece, which feels soft and cozy. It’s thinner than a sweatshirt, but still keeps me nice and warm. It’s also much more flattering than typical sweatshirts. Instead of a bulky oversized look, it drapes beautifully over my torso. Even though I primarily wear this at home while I’m relaxing on the couch, I occasionally wear it out of the house to run errands as well.

Cost

The LUXOME Essential Tunic costs $105 before discounts. Though this is a higher price point than your typical sweatshirt, it is much more durable and stylish.

What It’s Made Of

The LUXOME Essential Tunic is made with 67% modal fleece, 27% polyester, and 6% Elastane. The modal fleece gives the tunic its soft feel, all while wicking away moisture. The elastane makes the tunic feel stretchy and breathable.

Sizing

The LUXOME Women’s Essential Tunic is available in sizes ranging from XS to XL. I ordered a size Medium and found that it fit true-to-size.

Pros

Available in three colors: fig, petal, and bone
Cons

Feels quite warm, so it may not be suitable for year-round use

The LUXOME wide-leg pant is both warm and breathable. Unlike joggers, this pant is flowy, roomy, and breezy. It’s perfect for lounging on the couch and reading a book. I could also see myself wearing them for long flights, because they’re both stylish and comfy.

Cost

The LUXOME Essential Wide-Leg Pant costs $105 before discounts.

What It’s Made Of

Like the tunic, the LUXOME Essential Wide-Leg Pant is made with 67% modal fleece, 27% polyester, and 6% Elastane. The pant has the same moisture-wicking and stretchy qualities as the matching tunic.

Sizing

The wide-leg pant is available in sizes ranging from XS to XL. I ordered a size Medium and found that it fit true-to-size.

If a buttery soft, smooth, and luxe feeling is what you’re looking for in a crew top, the Essential Crew fits the bill. “Hands down, my favorite thing about this top was how soft and smooth it felt,” Tony says of his experience testing this top. “I’m a bigger guy who tends to run pretty hot, but after about 30 minutes or so with the Essential Crew, I felt pretty comfortable. While I don’t think this is going to be a year-round staple for me, it’ll be the first thing I reach for when the temperature goes down.”

Cost

The LUXOME Essential Crew costs $105 before discounts.

What It’s Made Of

LUXOME uses a blend of materials for the crew topper. Here’s what LUXOME lists: 67% Modal Fleece, 27% Polyester, 6% Elastane. LUXOME also mentions it has 4-way stretch, which helps it fit most bodies.

Sizing

“As a bigger guy, I’m usually a little skeptical of online clothing,” Tony says. “The biggest size LUXOME offered for the Crew top was XL, so I opted for that. I’m happy to say that this actually felt snug in the best way. It was able to cover my torso pretty well without me having to tug at it.

“For reference, I weigh around 280 lbs and am around 5’8”, so if you weigh more than me, or are taller and have a longer torso, the XL likely won’t fit.”

Pros
Buttery smooth feeling
Didn’t feel too hot
Cons
XL is the biggest size offered

Joggers are great because they’re a bit more form fitting than your standard lounge pants. They could be great for those who want to take a leisurely stroll or still have some errands to do. Either way, the LUXOME Essential Joggers are just as soft and smooth as the Essential Crew and make a great pair together.

Cost

The LUXOME Essential Joggers cost $105 before discounts.

What It’s Made Of

The LUXOME Essential Joggers are made out of the same material as the Essential Crew: 67% Modal Fleece, 27% Polyester, 6% Elastane.

Sizing

The Joggers are sized by height, in addition to waist size. “I tested the XL size, again going for the biggest size just to be safe,” Tony says. “However, upon fully going through the sizing chart, the L would have been a better choice, as the XL fit well around my waist, but they felt baggy around my legs.”

Pros
Taper down to the ankle
Good for lounging or going out
Very soft and breathable
Cons
Could feel baggy for some

FONTOI Mattress Review: General Overview

FONTOI sells a variety of home furnishings, including bed frames, sofas, and of course, mattresses. There are several different types of mattresses to choose from, and they range in height and support. I personally tested the FONTOI 10-inch Queen-size memory foam mattress that’s infused with green tea, so that’s what I’ll focus on in this review.

Pros of the FONTOI Mattress

  • It’s a great cheap mattress. On Amazon, a Queen-size mattress costs about $320 and ships free with Amazon Prime.
  • It could be a good option for many back sleepers, because it feels slightly firmer than average.
  • It isolates motion well, so it could be a good mattress for couples

Cons of the FONTOI Mattress

  • Because it is a thin bed with a simple construction, I don’t expect it to last very long. Most mattresses last about 10 years, but the FONTOI will probably only last about five years.
  • It isn’t covered by a warranty.
  • It doesn’t offer much pressure relief for side sleepers.
  • This mattress has a “quicksand” feel, which could make it hard for some people to move around on top of the mattress.
  • Even though it’s infused with cooling materials, this mattress doesn’t dissipate body heat very well. If you tend to sleep hot at night, you might want to consider getting one of the best cooling mattresses instead.

FONTOI Mattress Firmness and Feel

Before I get into all of the minor details about this mattress, I’ll focus on its firmness and feel. These two pieces of information will help you determine whether the mattress could work well for your body type and sleeping position.

How Firm is the FONTOI Mattress?

The Mattress Clarity firmness scale ranges from 1-10, with 6.5/10 representing the industry standard of medium-firm. The FONTOI mattress feels slightly firmer than average, coming in at 7/10 on the scale.

That said, firmness can be subjective. I am a petite, average-weight person, and I didn’t compress the foam layers very much. People who weigh more than 230 lbs might think this mattress feels softer because they activate the comfort layers more.

Sleeping on the FONTOI Mattress

When I rested on my back on the FONTOI mattress, I felt a nice balance of comfort and support. I felt my hips sink into the top layer a little bit, but the firm base foam kept the rest of my spine in alignment.

I felt some pressure on my shoulders and hip when I moved to my side. Even though the mattress has a slow-moving feel, I wasn’t able to activate the dense base foam to feel much pressure relief. It’s possible that heavier people could feel a bit more cushioning than I did.

The FONTOI mattress was decent for stomach sleeping. I felt my hips sink out of alignment a little bit, but overall, it felt more supportive than many other mattresses I’ve tried. Heavyweight stomach sleepers, however, probably won’t get the hip support they need on this mattress.

What Does the FONTOI Mattress Feel Like?

The FONTOI mattress has a “quicksand” type of feel. I found it difficult to switch sleeping positions on this bed because the foam layers are so dense and slow-moving.

Sleeper WeightBack SleepersSide SleepersStomach Sleepers
Lightweight (Under 130 lbs)ExcellentBadGood
Average (130 – 230 lbs)GoodBadFair
Heavyweight (Over 230 lbs)BadFairBad

Is FONTOI Mattress Good For Lightweight People (Under 130 lbs)?

  • Lightweight back sleepers should feel a nice balance of comfort and support on the FONTOI mattress.
  • Lightweight side sleepers won’t compress the top layer of the mattress very much, so they may not get the pressure relief they need.
  • Lightweight stomach sleepers should get the hip support they need in order to maintain the correct spinal alignment.

Is FONTOI Mattress Good For Average-Weight People (130 – 230 lbs)?

  • The FONTOI mattress is a good option for average-weight back sleepers. People in this category won’t compress the top layer of the mattress too much, so they should feel plenty of lumbar support.
  • Side sleepers who weigh between 130 and 180 lb probably won’t feel enough pressure relief on this mattress, and they could develop pain along their shoulders and hips over time. People who weigh between 180 and 230 lb should compress the foam layers a bit more and feel some nice pressure relief.
  • The FONTOI mattress is a decent option for average-weight stomach sleepers. People who weigh less than 180 lb won’t compress the top layer too much and should be able to maintain the proper spinal alignment. Stomach sleepers who weigh over 180 lb, however, might feel their hips sink out of alignment.

Is FONTOI Mattress Good For Heavyweight People (Over 230 lbs)?

  • Heavyweight back sleepers likely won’t get enough lumbar support on the FONTOI mattress, which could lead to lower back pain over time.
  • This is a decent option for some heavyweight side sleepers. People who weigh between 230 and 250 lb will compress the foam layers quite a bit, and should feel some nice pressure relief along their shoulders and hips. Those who weigh more than 250 lb might “bottom out” on the mattress and will find more support on one of the best mattresses for heavy people.
  • The FONTOI mattress is not a good option for heavyweight stomach sleepers. Most people in this category will “bottom out” on the bed and feel their backs crane out of alignment, which can lead to back pain over time.

FONTOI Mattress Construction

Next, I’ll go into detail about the FONTOI mattress construction.

Cover

The cover is made from a thin, stretchy, and breathable fabric that aids in cooling and airflow. Beneath that sits a flame-resistant inner cover.

Comfort Layers

The main comfort layer consists of green tea gel-infused foam, which has a slow-moving feel. The infusion is meant to dissipate body heat and keep sleepers cool at night.

Support Layer

There’a a layer of high-density base foam at the bottom. This is what makes the mattress feel supportive and sturdy.

Mattress Height

The FONTOI memory foam mattress is 10” tall, which is typical for many budget-friendly, bed-in-a-box mattresses.

FONTOI Mattress Performance

I didn’t stop there. I also put the FONTOI mattress through a number of tests to rate its cooling capabilities, edge support, motion isolation, durability, and more.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

The FONTOI mattress is billed as a cooling mattress because it has a green tea gel infusion, but in my experience, this mattress sleeps quite hot. When I rested on this mattress, I gently sank into the top layer, which trapped my body heat. If you tend to sleep hot at night, I would look for a breathable hybrid mattress instead.

Motion Transfer

If you share a bed with a partner or a pet, you may want to find a mattress that isolates motion well. That way, you won’t feel much movement come over to your side of the bed during the night.

The FONTOI mattress isolates motion quite well, thanks to its dense foam layers. When I placed a glass of water on the bed and pressed my hands into the mattress, I didn’t see the water move inside the glass.

Edge Support

Edge support is another thing to take into consideration, especially if you’re looking for one of the best mattresses for couples. If a mattress has poor edge support, you’ll be forced to sleep closer toward the center of the mattress.

Unfortunately, the FONTOI mattress doesn’t have the best edge support. When I sat along the sides, I felt the mattress sink quite a bit.

Durability

With the FONTOI mattress, you get what you pay for. This mattress costs hundreds of dollars less than most Queen-size mattresses, but it will probably only last about half as long. It’s also not backed by a warranty. Based on my tests, I expect this bed to last about five years at most.

Off-gassing

After unboxing a bed-in-a-box mattress, it’s common to notice a slight chemical odor. This is called “off-gassing,” and it happened when I opened the FONTOI mattress. It took about 48 hours for the smell to fade away.

Noise

The FONTOI mattress didn’t make any noise when I tested it. Because it’s made entirely out of foam, I don’t expect it to make sound as the years go on.

Sex

People looking for one of the best mattresses for sex usually want beds that are easy to move around on. Unfortunately, the FONTOI mattress does not fit the bill. This mattress has a slow-moving feel, which could make couples feel like they are “stuck inside” the mattress.

FONTOI Company Policies

Before adding this mattress to your cart, I recommend reading the fine print. Here’s a brief overview of what you can expect if you order a mattress from FONTOI.

Warranty

The FONTOI mattress is not backed by a warranty.

Sleep Trial

FONTOI doesn’t offer a sleep trial period, but you have a 100-day window to return or exchange your purchase.

Return Policy

You can return or exchange your purchase within 100 days of receiving it, as long as it’s returned in its original condition.

Common FONTOI Mattress Complaints

Most people gave the FONTOI mattress a five-star review on Amazon, but there are a few negative reviews as well. Some people said the mattress wasn’t comfortable. A few customers said it’s suitable as a guest room mattress, but if you sleep on the bed for more than a couple of nights, you might develop lower back pain.

How Does FONTOI Mattress Compare to Others

I’ve tested hundreds of mattresses, so I know how hard it can be to find one that fits your sleep needs and budget. To make the process a bit easier, I compared the FONTOI to two other online mattresses: The Nectar and Leesa.

The Nectar mattress is another all-foam bed that’s available on Amazon. Nectar mattresses are about double the price of FONTOI mattresses, but they contain high-quality materials and have better cooling features.

The Nectar mattress has a slow-moving feel, but unlike the FONTOI, it shouldn’t make you feel like you’re “stuck inside” the bed. Because of this, Nectar mattresses don’t trap a lot of body heat, either.

Nectar mattresses have better customer service terms, as well. If you order a Nectar mattress, you can enjoy a one-year sleep trial period and lifetime warranty.

Leesa mattresses cost significantly more than FONTOI mattresses, but they are more durable and versatile. Leesa mattresses feel medium-firm and work well for most back and side sleepers. They have a balanced foam feel. This means that, unlike the FONTOI, you should feel like you’re sleeping “on top” of the mattress rather than “inside” it.

The FONTOI mattress might be a better choice if you are on a tight budget, or if you’re an average-weight side sleeper who likes a slow-moving feel.

The Takeaway

The FONTOI is a budget-friendly bed-in-a-box mattress that’s conveniently shipped through Amazon. It works well for many average-weight back sleepers, but other people might not get the pressure relief and lumbar support they need. Because it’s made with cheap materials, this mattress probably won’t last longer than five years.

If you’re shopping for a new mattress, chances are good you’ve seen latex as an option. Latex is typically more durable and responsive than memory foam, but can provide comparable pressure relief.

Interested in buying a latex mattress?  It can be important to find a mattress made with latex layers of a certain density to ensure your mattress meets your needs. Latex density can impact the bed’s cost, temperature regulation, durability and overall quality. Here’s what to understand about how latex density is measured.

How is Latex Density Measured?

Latex density measures the weight per unit of volume, and it’s expressed in pounds per cubic foot. Understanding latex density can give you an idea of how a mattress will perform and it also influences price, durability and temperature regulation. Mattresses are made with low, medium, and high-density latex.

What is Latex Density?

In a mattress, foam latex density is a measurement of weight per unit of volume expressed in pounds per cubic foot. Here’s an example: In a mattress with a latex layer that measures 20 cubic feet and weighs 100 pounds, the latex density is 5 pounds per cubic foot.

Latex Density Ranges

CategoryRange
Low DensityLess than 4.3 pounds per cubic foot
Medium Density4.3 to 5.3 pounds per cubic foot
High DensityOver 5.3 pounds per cubic foot

What Latex Density Means for Your Mattress

Latex density directly affects mattress performance. The higher the density, the more pressure the latex can withstand. Mattresses made with multiple layers of latex will typically pair high-density layer foams in the support layers with lower-density latex in the comfort layers to ensure the right balance of aligning support and cushioning softness. Here’s how latex density affects other performance factors in a mattress.

Pressure Relief

Latex is popular for its pressure relief. Because it distributes body weight evenly across the surface of the mattress, latex does an excellent job of alleviating pressure point pain. Higher-density latex offers more pressure relief than lower-density latex, but lower-density latex offers a gentle hugged sensation.

Weight

Latex mattresses are heavy, and you can thank the latex layers for that. It should also come as no surprise that higher-density latex foam is heavier than lower-density latex.

Responsiveness

Sleepers who change positions in the night tend to appreciate a mattress with high responsiveness. Unlike the slow-moving sensation of memory foam, latex responds quickly to your movements. Low-density latex actually outperforms high-density latex in responsiveness. But if you’re interested in a mattress that dampens motion disturbances from your sleeping partner,, high-density latex is a better choice.

Price point

Denser latex foams tend to be more expensive than lower-density foams. Fortunately, they’re also more durable, which means you can generally expect a latex mattress made with high-density latex foam to last longer than a mattress made with most memory and poly foams.

Cooling

People who tend to overheat at night should probably consider a latex mattress. Latex is naturally temperature neutral. However, denser latex foams are more likely to retain some heat than lower-density latex, simply because of reduced airflow.

Latex Density vs Mattress Firmness

It’s easy to assume that higher-density latex means a firmer mattress, but that’s not necessarily true. Keep in mind that latex density is a specific measurement, while mattress firmness refers to how hard or soft the mattress feels as a whole.

Mattress manufacturers use a firmness scale to give shoppers an idea of how a mattress might feel. It’s usually on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the firmest. But there is no universal firmness scale, which means a 5 on one manufacturer scale could be a 6 or 6.5 on another’s. Also, while the firmness of a mattress can be generalized based on its construction, an individual’s body type and weight will also affect how firm or soft it feels to them.

How to Choose the Right Latex Density

Choosing the right latex density comes down to personal needs and preferences. Sleepers who weigh less than 130 lbs will likely find lower-latex density conforms comfortably for a softer sensation. Sleepers between 130 and 230 lbs should do well on a combination of both low and high-density latex, or a low-density layer as part of a hybrid construction with support coils. Sleepers who weigh more than 230 lbs should consider higher-density latex to ensure sufficient support.

Your sleep position plays a role, too. Side sleepers need gentle cushioning on their hips and shoulder and will benefit from low- to medium-density latex. People who sleep on their back or stomach typically need additional support to keep their lumbar zone elevated and will do best on medium to high-density latex.

Bottom Line

Latex density can tell you a lot about how a mattress will perform. While the measurement isn’t always easy to find, you can generally find it somewhere on a manufacturer’s website. It’s often listed with the other mattress materials. Keep in mind that high-density latex offers more support than lower-density counterparts, which are best suited to cushioning comfort layers. Understanding latex density can help make it easier to find a mattress that will meet your specific needs for a better night’s sleep.

There are many brands that offer a variety of products designed to elevate your sleep, but Brooklyn Bedding could be a one-stop shop. From the brand’s Signature mattress and Aurora Luxe mattresses to pillows and sheets, we’ve reviewed a good portion of Brooklyn Bedding’s offerings.

Brooklyn Bedding Latex Topper Firmness & Feel

Let’s go over how you can expect the Brooklyn Bedding Latex Topper to change your mattress’s firmness and overall feel.

What’s the Brooklyn Bedding Latex Topper’s Firmness?

Brooklyn Bedding offers the latex topper in three firmnesses: Soft, Medium, and Firm. For this review, I tested the Medium option, and it did feel like a true medium-firm topper. It wasn’t so soft that I compressed it all the way to the mattress underneath, but it wasn’t so firm that it wasn’t comfortable.

A hand presses into the latex foam of the Brooklyn Bedding Latex Topper

Here at Mattress Clarity, we rate mattresses on a scale from one to 10, with one being so soft and plush, it’s like you’re sleeping on a cloud, with 10 being as firm as a concrete sidewalk. We rate medium-firm at 6.5/10, which is the industry standard. The mattress I tested this out on was a 6.5/10, and the Medium Brooklyn Bedding Latex Topper softened the mattress by about one point.

If you were to go for the Soft model, I would imagine that would soften your mattress even more, and if you went with the firm model, it might not soften a mattress at all. I’d guess that it would make a mattress a bit firmer, which could be good if you find that your mattress is too soft.

What Does the Brooklyn Bedding Latex Topper Feel Like?

If you’ve never experienced latex foam before, it’s much different from than standard memory foam. Latex foam is responsive and bouncy, and when you press into it, it springs back into place immediately. That’s exactly what you get with this topper. It can still add some cushioning and pressure relief to the top of your mattress, but you’re not going to sink into the foam and get a lot of body contouring like traditional memory foam would provide.

Sleeping on the Brooklyn Bedding Latex Topper

Climbing Getting on top of the Brooklyn Bedding Latex Topper was pretty easy, which I expected. Latex toppers are great for people who don’t want to have to fight with their mattress when it comes to getting in and out of bed or changing positions.

I started my initial testing out on my back, and the Medium topper did a really great job of keeping me supported. I didn’t really feel my body sink far into this topper, and I felt really well supported on it.

An image of a man resting on his back while on top of the Brooklyn Bedding Latex Topper

Moving over to my side, I noticed it felt a bit too firm for my shoulders, but my hips felt fine. Considering that this is the Medium version, though, I wasn’t too surprised. I’m a bigger guy, but I wasn’t able to compress the topper enough to really feel enough pressure relief for my shoulders. I’d recommend the Soft version instead for side sleepers.

Now, when it comes to stomach sleeping, you want something as firm as possible to keep your hips elevated. To my surprise, I felt really well supported on my stomach here. I didn’t feel my hips sinking into the latex, and I think I felt most comfortable on my stomach. I imagine the Firm model will work even better, but the Medium topper could be a great choice for stomach sleepers.

30-60 Min Nap with the Brooklyn Bedding Latex Topper

For the nap test, I usually spend most of my time on my side as I’m a side sleeper by nature. But occasionally, I do like to switch over to my stomach while I sleep. For this particular nap test, I spent a good amount of time on my stomach. As I mentioned, I felt the most comfortable here.

An image of a man resting on his side while on top of the Brooklyn Bedding Latex Topper.

Whenever I switched back to my side, I was able to do it with ease. Latex foam is great for those who switch positions a lot while they sleep because you don’t really sink into it and feel stuck. And because I wasn’t sinking into the foam, my body heat wasn’t being reflected back on to me. So, as a hot sleeper, I didn’t notice myself overheating while I slept.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lb – 230 lb

For average-weight sleepers of all sleeping positions, the Medium option could be a winner. It’s soft enough to provide some pressure relief, but just firm enough to offer good support. But if you’re looking to get even more pressure relief, opt for the Soft model. If you’ve got a mattress that’s already too soft, the Firm model could help offer more support.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lb

For my fellow heavyweight sleepers, I’d recommend different firmnesses depending on sleeping position. For side sleepers, the Soft version should work well for pressure relief, with the Medium option being good for back-side combination sleepers. The Medium really shines for back sleepers and some stomach sleepers. Heavier stomach sleepers (around 300 lbs and over) might want to opt for the firm version, though.

Lightweight Sleepers – Less than 130 lb

Overall, each firmness option should work for lightweight sleepers. I’d recommend the Soft version for side sleepers, the Medium for back and stomach combination sleepers, and the Firm version for strict stomach sleepers.

Brooklyn Bedding Latex Topper Construction

Let’s take a look at the materials that make up the Brooklyn Bedding Latex Topper.

Cover

This is a topper that comes with an outer, removable cover. Brooklyn Bedding offers two options: a cotton cover or a GLACIOTEX cover. For this review, I tested the model with the cotton cover. This felt soft and smooth.

An image showing the cotton cover of the Brooklyn Bedding Latex Topper
The Cotton cover

GLACIOTEX is a polyester material that’s designed specifically for cooling. I should point out that if you opt for this cover, it does raise the price of the topper. This might be worth it for those who run especially hot, or if you sleep with a partner, which could cause the topper to absorb more heat. So, having that additional layer of cooling insurance could help.

Comfort Layer

The comfort layer of the topper is a single slab of latex foam. As mentioned, this is bouncy and responsive, and springs back into place immediately. The foam is also perforated, which means it contains lots of little holes which allow for airflow within the topper.

Topper Height

This topper is 3” tall.

Brooklyn Bedding Latex Topper Performance

Let’s talk about a few other factors most look for when shopping for a new mattress topper and how the Brooklyn Bedding Latex Topper stacks up.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

Overall, this should be a great choice for hot sleepers. Latex is a naturally breathable material, and the Brooklyn Bedding latex topper’s foam has been perforated, which allows for extra airflow. This topper also comes inside a cotton cover, which is thin, lightweight, and very breathable.

During my testing, I never felt like I was on the verge of overheating. You will sleep more “on top” of this topper, which means you won’t sink into the foam too much, where your body heat can be reflected back at you.

Durability

Latex is an incredibly durable material, and can last up to a decade with good care. Most toppers only last three to five years, but this topper should be a good, long-lasting option.

Off-Gassing

The Brooklyn Bedding Latex Topper arrives on your doorstep compressed in a cardboard box. When I unpackaged the topper, it sprang into shape almost immediately. So this topper could be ready to go right out of the box. However, some might notice a chemical smell to the topper, which is just a result of the compression process. We call this “off-gassing” and if you have a sensitive nose, you may want to wait for this to dissipate before using.

The smell usually fades after 24-48 hours. I noticed a faint smell, but it wasn’t so noticeable that it was an annoyance for me.

Cleaning

You are able to remove the outer cover and machine-wash it. Here’s what Brooklyn Bedding recommends:

  • Wash in a cold to warm water cycle
  • Use a mild detergent. Do NOT use bleach
  • Hang dry only

Allergens

The cotton and latex foam likely won’t attract or trap allergens in your sleep environment. So, this topper shouldn’t trigger any allergies. You can also wash the outer cover, which helps keep it clean and free of dirt and dust mites.

Company Policies

Here’s what Brooklyn Bedding offers on every purchase.

Warranty

The Brooklyn Bedding Latex Topper comes with a 3-year warranty. With good care, this topper should last the length of its warranty. And because of latex’s incredible durability, I expect it could last even longer than that.

Sleep Trial

When the latex topper arrives on your doorstep, you’ll have 30 days to make exchange or return decisions. This effectively acts as a sleep trial.

Return Policy

During that 30-day window, if the topper is not for you, you can issue a return and Brooklyn Bedding will offer a full refund and provide a prepaid shipping label.

Brooklyn Bedding also offers free shipping on all orders as well.

How Does the Brooklyn Bedding Latex Topper Compare to Other Toppers?

Never slept on a latex topper before? Let’s see how this topper stacks up to a traditional memory foam topper and a featherbed topper.

Brooklyn Bedding vs MOLECULE

When we think about mattress toppers, we usually picture that single slab of memory foam that sometimes has the egg crate design on top. If this is what you’re aiming for in your topper, then the MOLECULE CopperWELL mattress topper fits that bill. Although it has a hexagon pattern over an egg crate design, this topper has the classic slow-moving, sinking feeling that most people associate with memory foam.

A close up image of a hand pressing into the MOLECULE CopperWell topper.

The slow-moving quality to the CopperWELL topper makes it a very soft and plush topper. While the Brooklyn Bedding Latex Topper comes in a Soft version, its Medium and Firm options will likely appeal to more people. The CopperWELL is great for side sleepers who want pressure relief, but you might feel stuck inside it.

Latex foam is much more responsive and bouncy, making it very easy to move around on. Because of this, the Brooklyn Bedding Latex Topper is better suited for combination sleepers and those who tend to move around frequently during the night.

Brooklyn Bedding vs Parachute

You may have also heard of down feather mattress toppers, which are also called featherbeds. These toppers are great for those who want to add a thicker, pillow-top look and feel to their mattress. One such topper we’ve reviewed comes from Parachute. This topper combines the tiny, fiber-like feathers of down with actual feathers to give this topper its plush, cushioning feeling.

Parachute Down Feather Bed

For some, this is the ideal scenario, especially if you’re dealing with a mattress that’s too firm. However, if you want to add some pressure relief, or want to change the feeling of your mattress, the Brooklyn Bedding Latex Topper is the better choice.

This is because latex is springy, responsive, and easier to move around on. It also comes in three different firmness options. So, if you’re dealing with a mattress that’s too soft and needs some additional support, you can always get the Medium or Firm version of this topper.

Brooklyn Bedding Latex Topper FAQs

Why are latex toppers so expensive?

Latex is a natural material that’s extracted from rubber trees. The process can be lengthy and it can take many trees to produce sap for a single topper. While latex is pricey, its durability generally makes up for the price, as it can last several years, if not decades with good care.

What’s the best height for a latex topper?

Around 3” tall. Because of the way latex foam feels, anything lower than 3” might not offer enough pressure relief or it might not soften your mattress enough. The Brooklyn Bedding latex topper is exactly 3” tall.

What if I don’t like my Brooklyn Bedding topper?

During the 30-day window, you can make return or exchange decisions. If you opt to return, you’ll start the return process with Brooklyn Bedding. They’ll offer a prepaid shipping label and will give you a full refund.

D&D Futon Sleeper Mattress: General Overview

The D&D Futon Sleeper is a budget-friendly version of a traditional sleeper chair. It’s available in many different sizes and color options, but for this review, I’ll focus on the model that is 24” long.

Pros of the D&D Futon Sleeper

  • It’s budget-friendly. While twin-size sleeper chairs can cost around $1,000, the D&D Futon Sleeper ranges from $129 to $219.
  • It’s lightweight and easy to move. Unlike traditional sleeper chairs, you can easily stow the D&D Futon Sleeper away in a closet or attic.
  • It’s versatile, which makes it a nice option for dorm rooms and playrooms.

Cons of the D&D Futon Sleeper Mattress

  • It’s very firm, so it wouldn’t be comfortable for nightly use.
  • The D&D Futon Sleeper is only 6” thick, so it’s not a good option for people who weigh more than 150 lb. Most adults will sink through the foam, which could lead to lower back pain.
  • The chair only sits 12” off the ground, so it’s not a comfortable seating option for most adults.

What Does the D&D Futon Sleeper Mattress Feel Like?

When testing the D&D Futon Sleeper, I paid close attention to its firmness and feel. Keep reading to learn more about how it feels as both a chair and a mattress.

D&D Futon Firmness and Feel

The Mattress Clarity firmness scale ranges from 1-10, with 1 being the softest and 10 being the hardest. When the D&D chair is unfolded into a futon, it feels like a 9/10, which is much firmer than average.

I’m a petite, average-weight adult, and this mattress felt way too firm for me. I didn’t get the pressure relief I needed when I rested on my back or side. Even while stomach sleeping, I craved a bit more cushioning. For this reason, I wouldn’t recommend using this  futon for anything more than short naps.

Some small children may get the comfort and support they need, but even so, I’d recommend getting one of the best mattresses for kids instead. The beds on this list were specifically designed for childrens’ needs.

Because the mattress is so firm, it doesn’t have much give. I found it difficult to press into the foam. If you’re looking for a foldable mattress with more pressure relief, check out the Milliard Tri-Fold Mattress

D&D Chair Firmness and Feel

When it’s in chair form, the D&D Futon only sits 12” off the ground. This is taller than other foldable chairs, but it’s still not suitable for most adults. I felt decently comfortable when I lounged in it for 20 minutes, but after that, I started to feel some discomfort in my lower back and knees.

Like most foldable mattresses, the D&D is best suited for children. Toddlers and kids should be able to relax in the chair and get the support they need.

D&D Futon Construction

The D&D foldable futon is made with 6” of high-density foam. It’s surrounded by a polyester poplin material. Unlike other foldable mattresses, like the Milliard, you cannot remove or machine-wash the cover.

The D&D futon contains three sections, so you can easily fold it into a chair. The back of the chair isn’t very tall, but it creates a decent arm rest for most adults. You can attach the back of the chair with velcro straps.

D&D Futon Durability

Thanks to the futon’s high-density foam, it should be fairly durable. I don’t expect it to sag or sink as time goes on, but it won’t last as long as a traditional mattress. This foldable futon should last between three and five years.

How Do You Set Up the D&D Futon Sleeper Mattress?

It’s really easy to set up the D&D Futon Sleeper. When it arrived on my doorstep, I saw that it was crammed inside a cardboard box. The sides of the box barely covered the product inside, and it looked like it was about to bust open.

When it took the futon out of the plastic, I noticed a subtle chemical smell. This is pretty typical for compressed memory foam products. In fact, we even have a word for it: off-gassing. But after airing it out for two days, the smell faded away.

The D&D Futon Sleeper has an intuitive design, so it was easy for me to fold it into a chair. I just stacked the two large sections on top of each other and secured the smaller section to the top with velcro straps.

D&D Futon Sleeper Mattress Care Instructions

The D&D Futon Sleeper doesn’t have a removable cover, so you can’t machine-wash it. If you happen to get the outer cover dirty, you can spot clean it with a mixture of soap and water.

D&D Company Policies

Before buying, it’s always a good idea to read through the company policies. I’ve outlined some of D&D’s customer service terms below.

Trial period

The D&D Futon Sleeper isn’t a typical online mattress, and it doesn’t come with a sleep trial period. However, you can return the product within 30 days of purchase, as long as it’s in its original condition.

Warranty

The D&D Futon Sleeper mattress is not backed by a warranty.

FAQs

What are the best foldable mattresses?

Some of the best folding mattresses include the D&D Futon sleeper, the Milliard Tri-Fold Mattress, and the Sweetnight.

Are foldable mattresses good?

Foldable mattresses are decent options for kids’ rooms and guest rooms. Because they’re so thin, though, they aren’t great options for long-term use. Take a look at our list of the best cheap mattresses for some longer-lasting affordable options.

Can you sleep on a foldable mattress?

You can sleep on a foldable mattress, but you may not feel very comfortable. Foldable beds aren’t as durable or comfortable as traditional beds, so they are better suited for short naps.

What are the disadvantages of folding beds?

Folding beds don’t offer the same comfort and support that classic mattresses do. If you were to sleep on a folding bed every night, you might develop back or joint pain.

Saatva Rx Mattress Video Review

Saatva Rx Mattress Review: General Overview

The Saatva Rx is a luxury hybrid mattress specifically designed for maximum support and pressure relief. According to the company, its stable, supportive layers could help alleviate discomfort associated with chronic conditions like sciatica, arthritis, herniated discs, and scoliosis.

Here’s a look at the Saatva Rx’s pros and cons, but I’d like to note that people with serious pain issues should speak to a medical professional before choosing a bed. In addition, the Saatva Rx could help with your pain issues, but you shouldn’t consider it a cure-all for all of your pain issues.

Pros of the Saatva Rx Comfort Mattress

  • Contouring micro-coils and enhanced back support could make this a great option for people with joint pain issues.
  • With its naturally breathable cover and foams, plus its hybrid construction, it also works well for hot sleepers.
  • Those who want a deluxe mattress will find it in the luxury materials of the Saatva Rx.

Cons of the Saatva Rx Comfort Mattress

  • Fans of a traditional memory foam feel should also look elsewhere. The Rx has a plush, soft sleep surface but lacks the slow-moving feel of foam.
  • Budget shoppers should consider a less expensive mattress.

Saatva Rx Firmness and Feel

Firmness and feel have a direct impact on mattress comfort for different sleepers. Here’s how the Saatva Rx feels when you lie on it.

How Firm is the Saatva Rx Mattress?

The Saatva Rx feels very supportive beneath its plush, pressure-relieving top. On our firmness scale, 1 being the softest, I rated it a 6.5/10, which is the industry standard for medium-firm mattresses. Keep in mind that the Rx is zoned and it may feel firmer or softer depending on your sleep position.

The soft sleep surface is particularly well suited to side sleepers, but back and combination sleepers should also find it supportive and comfortable.

Sleeping on the Saatva Rx Mattress

The Saatva Rx felt great when I was on my back. The coils offered good support and some of the best contouring I have ever experienced. The Rx features Patented Lumbar Zone Quilting and a gel-infused memory foam lumbar crown, which gave me extra lumbar support

It was also a good match for side sleeping. The mattress comfortably gave way under my shoulders and hips and I felt little pressure there.

When I flipped to my stomach, the Rx felt a bit too soft for me. However, at 270 lbs, I compress the mattress more than lightweight and average-weight sleepers would. Stomach sleepers in those weight classes will feel more supported on this mattress.

Back sleeping on the Saatva Rx

What Does the Saatva Rx Mattress Feel Like?

The Saatva Rx mattress has a plush pillow-top feel and good bounce from the coil layers. The special design of the flexible micro-coils also offers excellent contouring so you feel supported along every curve.

Sleeper WeightBack SleepersSide SleepersStomach Sleepers
Lightweight (under 130 lb)GoodGoodGood
Average (130-230 lb)GreatGreatGreat
Heavyweight (over 230 lb)GoodFairPoor

Is the Saatva Rx Mattress Good For Lightweight People (Under 130 lb)?

  • Lightweight back, stomach and side sleepers will all find this mattress comfortable and supportive.

Is the Saatva Rx Mattress Good For Average Weight People (130 – 230 lb)?

  • Average weight sleepers should also like this mattress in all three sleep positions.

Is the Saatva Rx Mattress Good For Heavyweight People (Over 230 lb)?

  • Back sleepers who weigh less than 300 lbs should get enough support, but those who exceed that weight should opt for a mattress specifically designed for heavy people, like the Saatva HD.
  • The same is true of heavyweight side sleepers. Those weighing less than 300 lbs should experience enough support and pressure relief, but the Rx likely isn’t a good choice for heavier side sleepers.
  • It’s not a great choice for heavyweight stomach sleepers. People in this category will compress the layers too much and likely won’t get enough support under their hips and center mass.

Saatva Rx Mattress Construction

I took a closer look at how the Saatva Rx is built. Here’s what I found.

Cover

The organic cotton in the cover is naturally breathable. It’s treated with a botanical antimicrobial treatment to help inhibit bacteria, mold, and mildew growth. The cover is also quilted to give more support under the lumbar zone.

Pressing hand into Saatva Rx

Comfort Layers

The Rx has a layer of gel-infused memory foam that actively draws heat away from you while you sleep. This layer works with the Lumbar Zone Quilting above to deliver extra support and durability in the middle of the mattress.

Below, high-density foam layers encase a thin layer of flexible micro-coils, which feel both cradling and supportive. The flexibility of this coil layer makes for excellent contouring that may relieve pressure point pain.

Support Layers

It’s in the support layers of the Saatva Rx that things start to get interesting. First is the Therapeutic Support Core, which is composed of pocketed coils topped with foam modules. The proprietary foam is infused with graphite and phase change material and features an open cell structure to sleep cooler than traditional memory foam. The modular foam design also has excellent motion isolation and body contouring.

The pocketed coils are quick to respond, automatically adjusting to your body’s shape and movement for superior pressure relief. Firmer caliber spring coils around the mattress perimeter also add great edge support. At the bottom of the mattress is a base layer for stability and structure.

Mattress Height

The Saatva Rx is on the taller side at 15”.

Saatva Rx Mattress Performance

I tested the Saatva Rx to assess features like temperature regulation, motion transfer, edge support, durability, and more. Here’s how it worked for me.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

Hybrid mattresses encourage better air circulation than all-foam beds, and the Saatva RX is no exception. Plus, the Rx has graphite and phase change material, which can help draw heat away from the body. This could make it a great choice for hot sleepers.

Motion Transfer

I thought the mattress handled motion transfer quite well for a coil mattress. The special foam and coil design helps isolate motion to each side of the mattress, so this should work well for couples.

Edge Support

Edge support can be a really important feature for couples and those who have trouble getting in and out of bed. Fortunately, the Saatva Rx delivers. It has a reinforced edge, so the edge support is excellent. You shouldn’t feel like you are rolling off when you lie near the edge.

Durability

Saatva is a reputable brand, and the Rx is a luxurious, high-end mattress made with durable materials. I think it should last at least 10 years.

Off-gassing

Like all Saatva mattresses, this one isn’t shipped compressed and stuffed into a box. That means it has no off-gassing and it’s ready to sleep on the minute you place it on your bed.

Noise

I heard no noise when moving around on top of the mattress. However, it does have coil layers, so there’s a possibility of squeaking after a few years.

Sex

The mattress is responsive with a good amount of bounce, which is good news for sexual partners who are looking for a bed that’s easy to move around on.

Saatva Rx Company Policies

When you buy a mattress, it’s important to be clear on company policies regarding the warranty, sleep trial, and return policy. Here’s what to know about the fine print on the Saatva Rx.

Warranty

The mattress has a generous lifetime warranty, which means it’s covered in the event of workmanship or material defects as long as you own it.

Sleep Trial

Saatva has one of the best sleep trials in the industry. You can test the Saatva Rx for a full 365 nights, which should be more than enough time to decide if this is the mattress of your dreams.

Return Policy

The mattress is eligible for returns at any time during the 365-night trial window. If it’s not working out, you can contact Saatva to arrange for the mattress to be picked up. They’ll refund your money, minus a $99 processing fee.

Common Saatva Rx Mattress Complaints

Most people rave about the Saatva Rx, but there is limited negative feedback. A few customers report experiencing issues with delivery, while one or two others say that they’ve noticed premature sagging.

How Does The Saatva Rx Compare To Others

If you’re considering a Saatva Rx, you may have looked at the brand’s other options, too. Here’s how the Rx compares to other models and brands.

Saatva Rx vs Saatva Classic

The Saatva Classic is a highly-rated mattress. It has a simpler design than the Rx and it’s not designed specifically for people with pain issues. Saatva recommends the Classic for those who would classify their joint and back pain as minor.

Unlike the Rx, which has a single firmness, the Classic comes in multiple firmness options. Both mattresses have good bounce, but the Rx has a more unique feel thanks to its proprietary coil design. It also costs more than the Classic.

Who Should Get Saatva Rx Who Should Get Saatva Classic
People with pain issuesPeople on a tighter budget
Those who want a more luxurious mattressThose who don’t deal with pain issues

Saatva Rx vs DreamCloud Premier Rest

The DreamCloud Premier Rest is another luxurious hybrid bed. But for all its features and benefits, it’s not as advanced as the Saatva Rx, nor is it designed specifically for those with pain issues. It’s also a softer mattress, so it may be a better choice for side sleepers. In terms of price, the Premier Rest is more affordable than the Rx.

Who Should Get Saatva Rx Who Should Get The DreamCloud Premier Rest?
People with pain issuesStrict side sleepers

Saatva Rx FAQs

What is the lifespan of a Saatva Rx mattress?

With its premium materials and hybrid construction, you can reasonably expect the Saatva Rx to last at least 10 years.

Can you flip a Saatva Rx mattress?

No. The Saatva Rx has a top and a bottom, and it’s not designed to be flipped.

Is the Saatva Rx a good mattress?

The Saatva Rx is indeed a good mattress. It should work well for people with pain issues, and its breathable materials and hybrid construction make it a great choice for hot sleepers as well.

Milliard Tri-Fold Mattress: General Overview

Foldable mattresses aren’t as popular as sleeper sofas, but they make great additions to kids’ play areas and guest rooms. Milliard sells several types of foldable mattresses that range in size, color, and thickness. I tested a Queen-size 4.5” Tri-Fold Foam Folding Foam Sofa Bed Mattress, so that’s what I’ll focus on in this review.

Pros of the Milliard Tri-Fold Mattress

  • It’s budget-friendly. For less than $200, you get a Queen-size mattress and a small couch. It’s also available on Amazon Prime, which means it’s eligible for free two-day shipping.
  • It’s versatile. When you’re not sleeping on it, you can fold it into a couch and save space in the room.
  • It has straps that attach with velcro, so it’s easy to secure when you want to fold it into a couch.
  • The Milliard Tri-Fold mattress contains CERTIPUR-US certified foam, which means it was made without harmful chemicals. It has a slow-moving feel and offers a bit more pressure relief than competing products.

Cons of the Milliard Tri-Fold Mattress

  • It may not fit into everyone’s home aesthetic. When it’s folded into a couch, it sits low to the ground. If you’re looking for a traditional sofa or couch, this isn’t the best product for you.
  • The mattress isn’t supportive enough for most adults. When you unfold the pieces to form a Queen-size bed, the entire mattress is only 4.5” tall. People who weigh more than 130 lb likely won’t get much support from the thin mattress and could develop joint pain if they sleep on this mattress for too long.

What Does the Milliard Tri-Fold Mattress Feel Like?

When testing mattresses, I always pay close attention to firmness and feel. And the Milliard Tri-Fold mattress is no exception. Keep reading to learn more about what it feels like when it’s constructed like a Queen-size mattress and a couch.

Milliard Mattress Firmness and Feel

The Mattress Clarity firmness scale ranges from 1-10, with 6.5/10 representing the industry standard of medium-firm. When the Milliard is unfolded into a Queen-size mattress, it feels like a 7.5/10, which is firmer than average.

As an average-weight adult, I felt decently supported while back sleeping. When I moved to my side, though, I felt some pressure build up around my shoulders and hips. The mattress also wasn’t supportive enough for me when I rested on my stomach. This bed is quite thin, and I felt my hips sink out of alignment in this position.

That said, the mattress’s thin construction could work well for children who weigh less than 130 lb. It’s made with high-quality CERTIPUR-US certified foam, which has a slow-moving feel. Lightweight people won’t compress the foam too much, so they should feel more pressure relief than heavier people will.

Milliard Sofa Firmness and Feel

When it’s folded into a couch, the Milliard only sits about 9” off the ground. In my opinion, this makes it more comparable to a bean bag chair than a traditional sofa. It could work well if you only sit on it for a few hours a week. If you sat on this couch every day, it’s possible the lack of support could lead to lower back pain.

The couch’s proportions are better suited for young children. I could see this being a nice addition to a kid’s playroom. If your kiddos invite their friends over for a slumber party, you can just unfold the Milliard couch and give guests a place to sleep.

Milliard Tri-Fold Mattress Construction

Like its name suggests, the Milliard has three foldable sections. There are velcro straps attached to the sides so that you can keep the back of the couch secure and upright.

It has a removable, machine-washable cover that’s made from breathable polyester material. The CERTIPUR-US foam has a slow-moving feel that offers more cushioning than other foldable mattresses I’ve tested.

Milliard Tri-Fold Mattress Durability

Because this mattress is much thinner than typical beds, it probably won’t have as long a lifespan. With normal use, I expect the Milliard Tri-Fold mattress to last between three and five years

How Do You Set Up the Milliard Tri-Fold Mattress?

Setting up the Milliard Tri-Fold mattress is easy. The product is roll-packed and compressed into a small cardboard box. Simply carefully cut through the plastic and let the product expand for 48 hours.

You may notice a faint chemical smell at first. This is called off-gassing, and it’s completely normal. To speed up the process, place the Milliard Tri-Fold mattress in a well-ventilated room and turn on some overhead fans to increase air circulation.

To turn the Milliard Tri-Fold Mattress into a couch, stack the two large sections on top of each other. Then, pull the smaller section toward the stacked portions until it makes a right angle. Secure the back of the couch with velcro straps to keep it in place.

Milliard Tri-Fold Mattress Care Instructions

The outer cover is removable and machine-washable. For the best results, wash separately on a gentle cycle without mild detergent and let it air dry.

FAQs

What are the best foldable mattresses?

We rounded up a list of the best folding mattresses, which includes Milliard, Sweetnight, Cozzi, and Lucid.

Are foldable mattresses good?

Generally, foldable mattresses aren’t as comfortable or supportive as bed-in-a-box mattresses. That said, they are good options for guest bedrooms and children’s playrooms, because they’re versatile and easily stowed away.

Can you sleep on a foldable mattress?

Yes, you can sleep on a foldable mattress, but it won’t be as comfortable as a traditional mattress. It’s not a great idea for adults to sleep on foldable mattresses every night, because the lack of support could lead to back and joint pain. Children don’t typically need as much lumbar support, so a foldable mattress could be a decent option for them.

What are the disadvantages of folding beds?

Folding beds are much thinner than traditional mattresses, so they don’t offer a lot of lumbar support. Over time, foldable mattresses could cause adults to crane their backs out of alignment, which can lead to back pain.
