Tomorrow Sleep vs. Bear Original Overview

Tomorrow Sleep and Bear are both online sellers of mattresses that incorporate unique features to solve common mattress issues. The main differences between the mattresses are that Tomorrow Sleep incorporates springs and offers two firmness options, while Bear’s flagship mattress is made entirely of foam and is sold in only one firmness level. (Bear also makes a hybrid springs and foam mattress, but we won’t be discussing that here.)

I’ll run through the similarities and differences in greater detail in this Tomorrow Sleep vs Bear mattress comparison to help you determine which better suits your needs.

Key Similarities

  • All options are 10” thick and are constructed to ensure people sleep cool throughout the night.
  • All options have a high-density base support foam.
  • Options are similarly priced. ($550.00-$1150.00 for Tomorrow Sleep, $786.00-$1304.00 for Bear)
  • Both incorporate memory foam somewhere in the construction.
  • Both companies offer free shipping.

Key Differences

  • Tomorrow Sleep is softer (both versions).
  • Tomorrow Sleep has a more complex construction.
  • Tomorrow Sleep has springs and side rail system to reinforce edge support.
  • Bear has more spring and bounce.
  • Bear offers an upgraded cover that’s made with Celliant, which is said to help athletes recover more quickly.
  • Bear has a 365-night sleep trial, while Tomorrow Sleep has a 100-night trial period.

Tomorrow Sleep Construction

  • The Medium Soft and Medium Firm versions of Tomorrow Sleep differ mainly in the thickness of certain layers, but otherwise are similar in construction.
  • The cover is made of polyester and nylon.
  • A 1-inch layer of memory foam with phase change material comprises the top layer.
  • Below that is a layer of gel foam, providing comfort and bounce. In the Medium Soft option, this layer is thicker.
  • The Medium Firm option has an additional layer of memory foam-like “dynamic response foam” under the gel foam layer.
  • Bother options have a 6-inch support layer consisting of individually pocketed coils. The Medium Firm option uses thicker coils in this layer.
  • A foam side rail system reinforces edge support.
  • A 1-inch layer of stabilizing foam forms the base in both options.

Bear Original Construction

  • The optional, $200 cover is made of Celliant, a material used in some athletic clothes. Celliant incorporates thermoactive minerals said to convert convert radiant body heat into infrared energy that is sent back into the body.  These infrared rays are understood to have positive effects on the body. If you don’t want to spend the additional $200 the cover will not contain Celliant.
  • A special memory foam made with graphite gel comprises the top layer of the mattress. This combination of materials is supposed to better disperse heat and prevent you from sleeping hot.
  • The bottom two layers consist of a springy response foam and layer of dense base foam.

Construction Differences and Notes

  • Tomorrow Sleep has more layers and also incorporates springs in the support layer.
  • While both mattresses incorporate memory foam, Tomorrow Sleep has more of a traditional memory foam feel.
  • Bear uses a material called Celliant in its optional cover that is supposed to help athletes recover.
  • Bear uses graphite gel to help disperse heat, helping to keep the mattress cool.
  • Tomorrow Sleep sleeps cool on account of its incorporation of springs.
  • Bear is firmer than both versions of the Tomorrow Sleep mattress.

Firmness and Feel Differences

Bear is firmer and has more bounce than the Tomorrow Sleep does. Tomorrow Sleep is more responsive to pressure, sinking in more and with greater ease when I press into it with my hand. The Tomorrow Sleep video here is for the Medium Firm option, so keep in mind that the Medium Soft version will be even softer.

Motion Transfer Differences

As firm and springy as Bear is, it still does a good job of isolating motion, just as Tomorrow Sleep does. Both these mattresses are good options for couples.

Pick Tomorrow Sleep If:

  • You sleep on your side– Tomorrow Sleep is softer, with a more quicksand-like feel, and will conform to the contours of your body.
  • You like memory foam– Tomorrow Sleep has more of a memory foam feel, so if you’ve had luck with this material, you may prefer this mattress.

Pick Bear If:

  • You sleep on your stomach or back– Bear is firmer than both versions of Tomorrow Sleep, making it a better option for people looking for firm support.
  • You worry about sleeping cool– Both mattresses sleep cool, but Bear uses special materials to ensure you don’t overheat in bed.
