Gelee H4 Mattress Firmness and Feel
Before we explore the ins and outs of this mattress, let’s focus on the most important elements: firmness and feel.
How Firm is the Gelee H4?
The Mattress Clarity firmness scale ranges from 1-10. Medium firm mattresses feel like a 6.5/10, and the Gelee H4 feels just a touch softer than that. Thanks to its ultra plush memory foam, the Gelee H4 feels like a 6/10 on our firmness scale.
Sleeping On The Gelee H4
The Gelee H4 works well for most back and side sleepers. This mattress has pressure-relieving foam on top and supportive coils underneath. However, because it feels softer than average, the Gelee H4 isn’t supportive enough for most stomach sleepers.
What Does the Gelee H4 Feel Like?
The Gelee H4 has a classic slow-moving feel. When you rest on this bed, the cushy foam layers will gently contour your body. However, thanks to its innerspring support layer, you shouldn’t feel “stuck” in this mattress. It’s still fairly easy to move around on the H4.
Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lb – 230 lb
Average weight sleepers should feel a great balance of comfort and support while back and side sleeping. The top layers cradle the lower back, while the zoned coils help keep the spine in the proper alignment. Side sleepers will especially love the pressure-relieving foam on top.
The Gelee H4 won’t work well for average weight stomach sleepers, however. When resting in this sleeping position, people need an especially supportive mattress. Otherwise, their hips could dip into the top layer and cause the back to crane out of its natural alignment. This can lead to lower back pain over time, and nobody wants that! Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lb
Back and side sleepers who weigh between 230 lb and 300 lb should love the Gelee H4. Heavier people may sink deeper into the comfort layers, but they’ll still feel plenty of support from the coils underneath. People who weigh more than 300 lb, though, should consider getting a more supportive bed, such as one of the best mattresses for heavy people.
Heavy stomach sleepers will also want to look elsewhere, because the Gelee H4 isn’t firm enough to keep the spine in the correct position.
Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lb
Lightweight sleepers should feel supported and comfortable in all three sleeping positions. Yes — even lightweight stomach sleepers will feel at home on this bed. That’s because smaller folks won’t compress the comfort layers as much, so they should maintain the correct alignment throughout the night.

Cover
The cover, made out of phase change material, feels cool to the touch. If you’re a hot sleeper, you’ll definitely want to opt for the H4; this cooling cover isn’t featured in other Gelee models.
Comfort Layers
Beneath the cover, you’ll find a 1.25” layer of Gelee’s Gel Matrix. This proprietary material conforms to each person’s curves and creates excellent body contouring and pressure relief. And because it has lots of room for airflow, this material doesn’t trap body heat easily.
Underneath the Gel Matrix sits a layer of Ultra Plush HD memory foam. This slow-moving material is the most luxurious foam Gelee offers. When you press your hand into it, you’ll see that it takes several seconds for the mattress to return to its original shape.
To aid with edge support, the Gelee H4 has a reinforced foam encasement around the sides. This is especially great news for couples, because they won’t feel like they’ll roll off the side of the bed when they relax near the edges.
Support Layer
Gelee has an 8” coil system with five distinct zones. This means it feels firmer in some areas and softer in others. The result? A mattress that helps sleepers maintain the correct spinal alignment in most sleeping positions. It’s also a fantastic option for folks dealing with back pain.
Finally, Gelee has a layer of stabilizing base foam. These durable materials help extend the life of the mattress.

Gelee H4 Mattress Performance
As with every product we review at Mattress Clarity, we ran the Gelee through a number of tests. Here’s how it performed in terms of motion transfer, edge support, durability, and more.
Sleeping Hot or Cold
If you’re a hot sleeper, you can rest easy on the Gelee H4. Its Gel Matrix material feels especially breathable, and the gel helps pull heat away from the body. To make things even cooler, the cover contains phase change material and the coils promote airflow.
Motion Transfer
Most hybrid mattresses don’t isolate motion well, which can cause problems for couples. However, that won’t be an issue on the Gelee H4. This mattress has a layer of dense memory foam on top, which helps absorb movements. If finding a mattress for motion isolation is a top priority for you, the Gelee H4 could be a great choice.
Edge Support
The Gelee H4 has a reinforced edge, so when you sit near the side of the mattress, you won’t feel like you’ll roll off. This is also great news for couples, because each person can utilize more of the mattress.
Durability
As Gelee’s most luxurious model, the H4 contains many high-end materials. Because of this, we expect the bed to last longer than other mattresses — at least 10 years.
Off-Gassing
When we opened this mattress, we noticed a slight chemical smell. In the mattress world, we call this “off-gassing.” But don’t fret! This is completely normal, and the smell faded away in 48 hours.
Noise
Even though the bed has coils, we didn’t notice any loud creaking sounds when we tested the Gelee H4. It’s possible the bed could squeak as time goes on, but we don’t anticipate that becoming a major problem.
Sex
Couples looking for the best mattresses for sex usually want the same thing: It’s got to be easy to move around on. The Gelee H4 has coils, so it has a touch of responsiveness to it. However, when you rest on this bed, you’ll mostly notice its plush comfort layer. This layer isn’t the easiest to move around on, so we don’t think this is the absolute best mattress for getting intimate.

Gelee H4 Vs. Nectar
Both mattresses work well for back and side sleepers, but they feel slightly different. The Gelee mattress has a slow-moving comfort layer, but thanks to its innerspring support system, sleepers won’t feel like they’re sinking into the bed. When folks rest on the Nectar mattress, they will dip into the comfort layers a bit more. This also means that some people might find it difficult to move around on top of the Nectar mattress.
The Nectar mattress doesn’t contain springs, which also lowers its price point. Even though both mattresses contain gel memory foam, we expect the Gelee to dissipate heat better than the Nectar.

Due to its high-quality materials, we expect the Gelee H4 mattress to last at least 10 years. For reference, most beds last 7-10 years. We think the Gelee will outlast many all-foam beds.
Can you flip the Gelee H4 mattress?
No, you cannot flip a Gelee H4 mattress. This bed has coils at the bottom and foam on top. If you flipped it, the bed wouldn’t provide the right amount of comfort and support.
What if I don’t like my Gelee mattress?
Not a fan? Not to worry. Gelee offers a 90-night sleep trial period, so you can easily issue a return and receive a full refund. It’s important to note, however, that you must try out the mattress for at least 30 nights before returning it. Otherwise, you’ll have to pay for shipping costs.
