Casper Select Video Mattress Review
Casper Select Mattress Overview
Casper is one of the biggest and most popular brands on the online mattress market. The company is known for its proprietary Zoned Support system that helps promote perfect spinal alignment. From the Casper Original to the Casper Wave Hybrid, the brand’s models are great for many types of sleepers.
For a long time, Casper mattresses were mostly available online. Now, the brand has released the Casper Select, a Costco-exclusive mattress. As I will explain, it is very similar in design to the Casper Original mattress, but it does have some slight differences as well.
Pros of the Casper Select Mattress
- The Casper Select mattress is an excellent choice for most back sleepers. Its medium-firmness offers the right amount of support to average and lightweight sleepers to achieve neutral spinal alignment.
- This mattress has a balanced-foam feel. The top comfort layers make the mattress feel soft yet responsive, and its base support foam layer is much firmer to elevate the lumbar region.
- For Costco members looking for an affordable mattress, the Casper Select is a great contender. Members may also save money by purchasing the mattress in-warehouse at a lower non-delivered price, subject to item availability.
Cons of the Casper Select Mattress
- The Casper Select is not firm enough to support heavyweight sleepers. It performs decent for heavyweight back sleepers, but I would recommend a firmer mattress to better elevate the lumbar region.
- Although this mattress is made with memory foam, it does not have a conventional memory-foam feel. It is more responsive and has less impressive motion isolation than a slow-moving memory foam mattress.
- Those without a Costco membership are unable to purchase the Casper Select.

Casper Select Mattress Firmness and Feel
Let’s start off by talking about the Casper Select’s firmness and feel. This should give you a good initial idea of whether or not this mattress will work for you.
How Firm Is The Casper Select Mattress?
On a firmness scale of 1-10, I put the Casper Select at a 7. The industry standard medium-firm is 6.5, so this is just a bit firmer than average. The combination of two soft layers with firmer support layers gives this mattress a decent balance of comfort and support.
It is worth noting that the bed’s zoning means it might feel firmer or softer depending on your sleeping position.
Sleeping On The Casper Select
I felt very comfortable back sleeping on the Casper Select mattress. It has a good balance of comfort and support, and that is perfect for back sleeping. I also felt the extra lumbar support coming from the Zoned Support layer. Overall, it was a great mattress for back sleeping.
Side sleeping, the Casper Select was not the best match for me. I am a larger person and weigh 270 lb. Because of this, I pushed pretty far into the mattress and felt some bunching up around my pressure points.
When I was stomach sleeping, the Casper Select was decently supportive. However, if I slept on my stomach all night, I would probably want a firmer mattress.
What Does The Casper Select Feel Like
While the Casper Select does feature memory foam in its construction, overall, it features more of a balanced foam feel. Lying down, I didn’t sink in too far, and I found it very easy to move around and change positions. Sleeping on the Casper Select, you shouldn’t feel stuck.
Sleeper Weight | Back Sleepers | Side Sleepers | Stomach Sleepers |
Lightweight (Under 130 lb) | Excellent | Good | Good |
Average (130 – 230 lb) | Excellent | Good | Fair |
Heavyweight (Over 230 lb) | Fair | Bad | Bad |
Is the Casper Select Mattress Good For Lightweight People (Under 130 lb)?
- Lightweight back sleepers will feel well-supported and comfortable on the Casper Select. Its medium-firmness is ideal for back sleepers so their hips do not sink too far into the mattress.
- Lightweight sleepers on their side will feel a great deal of pressure relief and body contouring around their shoulders and hips.
- While stomach sleeping, lightweight sleepers will feel extra support in their lumbar region from Casper’s Zoned Support system.
Is the Casper Select Mattress Good For Average Weight People (130 – 230 lb)?
- Average weight back sleepers should love sleeping on the Casper Select mattress. The Zoned Support should press up into the lumbar area and keep that area elevated.
- If you are average weight and sleep on your side, the Casper Select should be a good match. You won’t sink too far into the mattress and should mostly feel the soft pressure relief of the top two foam layers.
- Average weight sleepers should get decent support when they are stomach sleeping. However, if you just sleep on your stomach, you might want to opt for a firm mattress.
Is the Casper Select Mattress Good For Heavyweight People (Over 230 lb)?
- Heavyweight back sleepers who weigh less than 270 lb should like the Casper Select. However, if you weigh more, you will want to check out a hybrid mattress or an innerspring mattress.
- Heavyweight side sleepers will most likely feel too much pressure on their shoulders and hips. They will want to find a mattress with a thicker comfort layer or check out the best mattresses for heavy people.
- Heavyweight stomach sleepers will also need to find a more supportive mattress. There is not enough support for their hips and pelvis, which can take their spine out of proper neutral alignment.

Casper Select Mattress Construction
Now, let’s pull back the cover of the Casper Select mattress and see what is going on inside.
Cover
The Casper Select features a hand-sewn cover that is soft and breathable as well. You can actually unzip the cover and remove it for easy cleaning.
Comfort Layers
The top comfort layer of the Casper Select is open-celled poly foam. It is responsive and adds some bounce to the mattress. Being open-celled, it is also designed to help dissipate heat and keep the top of the mattress nice and cool.
Below this, there is a layer of high-density memory foam. This makes the top of the mattress feel softer and provides pressure relief and a bit of contouring.
These two layers rest on a zoned transition layer. Casper’s proprietary Zoned Support makes the mattress feel firmer toward the center. This is meant to add extra support under the lower back and help keep your spine neutrally aligned in all three sleeping positions.
Support Layer
The Casper Select features high-density base support foam in its bottom layer. This is much firmer than the top layers and works to keep your body elevated.
Mattress Height
The Casper Select is 12” tall.

Casper Select Mattress Performance
I ran the Casper Select through a number of performance tests. Let’s see how it did!
Sleeping Hot or Cold
The Casper Select is an all-foam mattress and, while it features open-cell foam for some breathability, it really isn’t the coolest-sleeping mattress. Sleeping on the Casper Select, I felt myself heat up somewhat. Without coils, there is not a lot of room for airflow.
RELATED: Best Cooling Mattresses
Motion Transfer
If you sleep with a partner, you don’t want to feel their movements on your side of the mattress. This could disturb you and wake you up during the night. With this in mind, find a mattress that handles motion transfer well.
In my experience, the Casper Select does not feature the best motion isolation. The memory foam layer is absorbing a bit of motion but, overall, this isn’t a great mattress for couples.
Edge Support
Edge support is something couples should also consider. A mattress with good edge support will allow both partners to sleep toward the edge and get the most room to stretch out.
The Casper Select features some surprisingly good edge support. Even without coils, the mattress supported me when I was sitting and lying down near the edge.
Durability
Based on its materials and construction, the Casper Select should last for between five and seven years. It doesn’t feature extremely high-density foams or coils. It is more of a value mattress and could start to sag after five years.
Off-gassing
The Casper Select mattress is a bed-in-a-box. After I unboxed it, I noticed some off-gassing. This is completely normal when unboxing a new mattress. Many mattresses let off a chemical smell after unboxing.
I left the Casper Select in a well-ventilated room for 48 hours and the chemical smell completely dissipated.
Noise
The Casper Select made no noise when I moved around and changed positions. You shouldn’t hear any creaking and squeaking with this foam bed.
Sex
If you are looking for a mattress for sex, the Casper Select could work for you. It is quite responsive and makes it easy to move around. You and your partner shouldn’t feel stuck in the mattress.
Company Policies
Now, let’s take a closer look at Casper and Costco’s fine print.
Warranty Info
Costco offers a 10-year limited warranty with the Casper Select mattress. The Casper Select is designed to work on a solid bed base that supports the mattress and its user(s). The warranty will not cover your mattress if you place your mattress directly floor.
Sleep Trial
This Casper bed does not come with a specific sleep trial period, but you do have 90 days to return.
Return Policy
Costco offers free shipping and returns.
Common Casper Select Mattress Complaints
A common complaint with the Casper Select was that sleepers found the mattress too firm. Casper advertises the mattress as being medium-firm, but I found it to be slighter firmer than the industry standard medium-firmness.
Some one-star reviews claimed the Casper Select was so firm that it caused shoulder and or back pain. Many reviewers that found the mattress too firm were also side sleepers who found they did not sink into the mattress as much as they wanted.
Another common complaint among negative reviews was a chemical smell that lasted longer than a typical off-gassing period. Usually, beds-in-a-box need a day or two for chemical smells to dissipate in a well-ventilated room. But a handful of negative reviews mentioned that their Casper Select had a strong chemical smell after a week or a month of use.
How Does The Casper Select Compare To Other Mattresses?
It’s always a good idea to do some comparison shopping before settling on a mattress. Let’s do that right now!
Casper Select vs Casper Original
Product
Firmness
Score
Product
Casper Original MattressFirmness
Medium-firm: 7/10Score
The Casper Select and Casper Original are very similar mattresses, but they do have their differences. The main construction difference is that the Casper Select features an additional memory foam layer below the top layer. Besides this, their constructions are nearly identical. The mattresses are also identical in terms of firmness and feel.
The other major difference has to do with price. For a queen size, the Select costs a few hundred dollars less than the Original. That being said, you have to be a Costco member to get these savings.

Casper Select vs Nectar
Product
Firmness
Score
The Nectar mattress is a popular online mattress with a memory foam construction. Unlike the Casper Select, the Nectar mattress has a slow-moving memory foam feel that offers sleepers lots of pressure relief and body contouring. The Nectar feels like the industry standard for medium firmness, which is slightly softer than the Casper Select.
Sleepers with different body types and sleep positions will find one mattress more comfortable than the other. The Nectar mattress is a better match for side sleepers than the Casper mattress because its foam layers contour the shoulders and hips. Both of these mattresses are excellent for light and average weight back sleepers.
