Douglas Summit Mattress Overview

Douglas is a popular mattress brand from Canada that currently offers three models – the Douglas, Douglas Alpine, and Douglas Summit. These three all-foam beds are known for their impressive comfort and pressure relief, but the Douglas Summit is their softest, most comfortable model. With extra thick layers of comfort foam, it really makes you feel like you’re sleeping on a cloud. And, while it is an all-foam mattress, it boasts some nice cooling materials as well.

There’s a lot to love about the Douglas Summit mattress, but it’s going to be a better fit for certain types of people.

Douglas Summit Mattress Firmness And Feel

Let’s start off by talking about the Douglas Summit’s firmness and feel. This will give you a good idea of whether or not the Summit will work for your preferred sleeping position.

How Firm Is The Douglas Summit Mattress?

The Douglas is an extremely soft mattress with thick foam layers and scored close to a 5.5/10 on our firmness scale. That’s quite a bit softer than 6.5/10, the industry standard for medium-firm. Lying down on the Douglas Summit, I sank in quite a bit, and it felt like I was on a huge pillow. As I’ll discuss below, this is ideal for certain sleeping positions but not so much for others.

Sleeping On The Douglas Summit Mattress

When I was back sleeping on the Douglas Summit, the mattress was too soft for my taste. It was very comfortable at first, but I quickly realized I wasn’t getting enough support from the mattress. This wasn’t too surprising as the Douglas is a soft mattress designed to promote pressure relief.

Speaking of pressure relief, this is where the Douglas Summit really shone. Lying on my side, I sank in a good deal and felt no pressure on my shoulders and hips. The Douglas Summit is ideal for side sleeping.

Unsurprisingly, the Douglas Summit was not a good match for stomach sleeping. Soft mattresses rarely work for stomach sleeping, and the Douglas Summit was no exception. I felt my hips sinking forward into the mattress, and this caused some strain in my lower back. Stomach sleepers should look at one of the brand’s firmer mattresses or a firmer mattress altogether.

What Does The Douglas Summit Feel Like?

The Douglas Summit exhibited some of the slow-moving feel you expect from memory foam. Pressing my hand in, it took the foam material some time to completely pop back into place. It also offers nice contouring around the body.

At the same time, it isn’t as slow-moving as a Tempur-Pedic mattress, so I didn’t have too much trouble moving around on top.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lb – 230 lb

Average weight back sleepers who weigh closer to 130 lb could get enough support from the Summit but, if you weigh more, you should find something with more support. You won’t get enough lumbar support, and this could cause back pain. This goes for average weight stomach sleepers as well, who will want to find a firm mattress to give them the support they need.

Side sleepers in this weight range will love the Douglas Summit. It offers some of the best pressure relief I have experienced and should ease any pressure buildup around your shoulders and hips.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lb

Heavyweight back and stomach sleepers will want to find something more supportive than the Douglas Summit. Without coils, the Summit probably won’t be able to hold up too much weight. If you are a heavier back or stomach sleeper, consider one of our best mattresses for heavy people.

Some heavier side sleepers could get enough pressure relief from the Douglas Summit. I weigh 270 lb, and I felt great pressure relief but, if you weigh much more than me, you could press in too far and bottom out. In addition, this soft mattress might not be able to keep your spine in neutral alignment.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lb

If you weigh less than 130 lb, the Douglas Summit will be a great match for back and side sleeping. You’ll get the comfort and support you need in both positions.

You may even get enough support for stomach sleeping but, if you just sleep on your stomach, you should most likely pick a firmer, more supportive mattress.

Douglas Summit Mattress Performance

I ran the Douglas Summit through a gauntlet of tests to see how it performed with regard to cooling, motion transfer, and other criteria. Let’s see how it performed.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

For an all-foam mattress, the Douglas Summit sleeps quite cool. It features cooling nanofibres in its cover that are designed to draw heat away from your body. Also, its cooling gel memory foam is even cooler than what you find in the other Douglas mattresses.

Lying down on the Douglas Summit, I could feel the cover and gel-infused foams doing their job. However, if you are an extremely hot sleeper, you still might want to consider a hybrid mattress or one of our best cooling mattresses.

Motion Transfer

With thick foam right on top, the Douglas Summit handles motion transfer very well. If your partner moves around on their side of the mattress, you shouldn’t feel it on your side. This makes the Douglas Summit a good option for couples.

Edge Support

Being a plush all-foam mattress, the Douglas Summit does not offer amazing edge support. When I sat down on the edge, it collapsed a good bit. However, when I lay down, I didn’t feel like I was going to roll off. All-in-all, the Summit’s edge support is just average.

Durability

Looking at the Summit’s high-density materials and construction, I can say the mattress should last for at least seven to ten years. If you rotate your mattress regularly and keep your mattress clean, it could last even longer. If so, you are protected by a 15-year warranty!

Off-gassing

When I unboxed the Douglas Summit, I noticed the chemical smell I get when unboxing any new mattress. This is called off-gassing, and it is normal with bed-in-a-box mattresses.

To get rid of the smell, I left the Douglas Summit in a well-ventilated room and let it air out for 48 hours. After that, the smell was gone.

Noise

I heard no noises when I rolled around and changed positions on the Douglas Summit. Without coils, the Summit should never make noise. Because of this, the sound of your partner moving around at night shouldn’t disturb you.

Sex

Those who want a good mattress for sex want to think about responsiveness. Will the mattress let you move around easily or will it make you feel stuck.

While the Douglas Summit is bouncier than some memory foam mattresses, it isn’t a very responsive mattress. Couples should take a look at a hybrid mattress or latex mattress.

Company Policies

Let’s take a look at the brand’s fine print.

Warranty Info

The Douglas Summit comes with a competitive 15-year warranty.

Sleep Trial

You get a 365-night sleep trial with your Douglas mattress.

Return Policy

Douglas offers free shipping and returns with all of its mattresses.

How Does The Douglas Summit Compare To Other Mattresses?

Let’s see how the Douglas Summit stack up against its competitors!

Douglas Summit vs Douglas Original

The Douglas mattress isn’t necessarily a competitor but, if you’re considering the Douglas Summit, you probably want to know what to compare. Put simply, you get more mattress with the Douglas Summit. It is thicker, softer, and offers more cooling features. However, it is also pricier, so you are paying for those extra materials and features.

A cross-section of the Douglas mattress

Being a bit firmer, the Douglas Original offers better support for back sleeping, while the softer Douglas Summit offers better pressure relief for side sleeping. Also, the Douglas Summit does feel noticeably cooler than the Douglas Original.

Douglas Summit vs Nectar

The Nectar mattress is one of the most popular memory foam mattresses, and for good reason. It boasts very comfortable memory foam right on top as well as some cooling infusions. And, for such a nice memory foam mattress, it is sold for a value price.

A cross-section shot of the Nectar Classic Hybrid

Compared to the Douglas Summit, the Nectar is firmer and also slower-moving. Lying down on the Nectar, you get that super slow-moving memory foam feel. On the Douglas Summit, you sink in, but it is a bit easier to move around on.

No, you cannot flip the Douglas Summit mattress. Flipping it will not let the mattress perform correctly, and it will feel very uncomfortable to you.
