Birch Natural Wood Bed Frame Overview

Birch, a branch of the Helix brand, is dedicated to making all natural, 100% organic bedding for  its customers. We’ve reviewed the Birch and Birch Luxe mattresses, as well as the brand’s pillows and sheets.

But if you’re looking for a no-fuss, totally wooden bed frame, then this is the review for you. Here’s a quick overview of the Birch Natural Wood bed frame before we get into the full details:

People looking for simple set upPeople who want a tall frame for storage space underneath
Fans of a minimalist bed frame designShoppers on a budget

Birch Natural Wood Bed Frame Construction

Just like the name suggests, Birch uses wood for this bed frame. And it truly is 100% wood. I’ll get into the set up further below, but there aren’t even metal screws included in this base. And due to Birch’s dedication to using natural products, the wood has a certification from the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). This certification means that the trees were grown in forests that are ethically and sustainably run, and without the use of harsh chemicals. This makes this frame a good option for eco-conscious shoppers.

There are a few different types of wood used for each of the pieces for this frame. The slats are made from hardwood, the outer rails are made from pine, while the legs are made from maple. You  have the option to get the frame in a natural color, or you can choose a white finish.

This isn’t an adjustable base, and when completely assembled it stands at 13” tall. You don’t have the option to select a headboard, nor is this base compatible with one.

How Do You Put the Birch Natural Wood Bed Frame Together?

The Birch wood bed frame uses something called Japanese joinery for its assembly. This is the same construction method for the Thuma bed frame, which we’ve also reviewed. Japanese joinery uses cutouts in the wood to slide pieces together and lock them into place without the use of tools and screws.

In total, putting the Birch bed frame took me about 30 minutes. The joinery certainly makes for simple and intuitive set up. It likely would have taken me less time to put together if I had help, but because I was assembling the frame by myself, I found myself having to readjust many pieces that weren’t fully linked together.

Honestly, once I managed to get pieces to balance, finishing the frame became quick and easy. I don’t mind a bed frame that uses screws and an Allen wrench, but if you’re looking for a bed frame that is really simple to put together, this is certainly a great choice to consider.

Mattress Compatibility

I can see the Birch Natural Wood bed frame working well with a variety of mattresses, especially because it’s not an adjustable frame. I tested it out with an average hybrid mattress that wasn’t too heavy or very tall. This base supported the mattress well, and because of the durable wooden slats, I don’t see this bed frame bending or sagging over time.

Most beds these days don’t need box springs, but you can certainly use one with this bed frame. But keep in mind that this bed frame won’t hide the box spring like a sled frame or something built with tall railings.

I also made sure to move around on the bed to check for swaying or noises. I’m happy to report that the Birch bed frame didn’t make much noise, if any at all. And the Japanese joinery is quite sturdy, so I didn’t notice the bed frame swaying with my movement.

Birch Natural Wood Bed Frame FAQs

How long will the Birch Natural Wood bed frame last?

With good care, high-quality wooden bed frames can last up to a decade. With Birch’s five-year warranty, the Natural Wood bed frame should easily last that period of time, if not a full decade.

Do bed bugs prefer wooden frames?

No. Bed bugs will find nooks and crannies to hide in, regardless of the material used for your bed frame. Wooden frames won’t attract bed bugs, nor are they the preferred home for bed bugs.
