A bed frame can be just as much of an investment as the mattress that rests on it. Thin metal frames, though often cheap, don’t always hold up to the test of time. High-quality wooden frames, like the Avocado City bed frame, however, are sturdy and built to last.
In my unbiased review, I cover everything you need to know about this 100% wooden frame. I’ll go over the materials, how to set it up (spoiler alert: you don’t need tools), price and mattress compatibility. Read on to get all the details.

If you’re the type of shopper who wants a 100% wooden bedframe with easy set up, the City bed frame could be for you. Here’s a quick overview to highlight some of the things I loved about this frame, and what to be aware of to help you decide if this it the frame for you:

Avocado City Bed Frame Construction
Avocado offers this bed frame in two color options: blond or walnut. Regardless of which you pick, this frame is made up of 100% American hardwood timber. There are no laminates used in this frame. In fact, there are a number of certifications Avocado has acquired to ensure that the wood used is eco-friendly and certified organic.
One of these certifications involves the finish on the wood. Avocado doesn’t use traditional lacquers, which usually involve some kind of chemical that can be troublesome for those that are typically sensitive to chemical lacquers.

This frame comes in a standard base or you can opt for a headboard for an additional cost. For this review, I received the queen-sized frame with blond wood with a headboard.
How Do You Put the Avocado City Bed Frame Together?
Full disclosure—Avocado recommends two people for the set up of this frame (especially with the headboard). There’s a QR code you can scan on your phone to take you to a page with written instructions on how to set up this frame, as well as a video detailing set-up instructions. This QR code is on the outside of the box and on a card within one of the boxes as well.
I was all by myself the day I set this up. And while it certainly would have been easier to assemble this frame with a buddy, it’s not impossible to set up by yourself. In total, there are six pieces to this frame and I’m happy to report that none of them require tools to be put together.
The Avocado City Frame uses slide and lock systems to assemble. This just means you simply need to line up the two long sides with the shorter front piece and slide the metal locks together. Then, with a helper, lift the headboard and slide and lock it into place. Once you do that, you can attach the middle support beam and then roll out the wooden slats.
In total, it took me about 30 minutes (due to pauses and me having to do some creative thinking) to get the frame together. But if you’re setting the frame up with a second person, I can’t imagine it taking any more than 10 minutes. It definitely beats having to use screws and Allen wrenches, so I would certainly consider it one of the easier frames to assemble.
Mattress Compatibility
In general, the Avocado City bed frame will work with most beds. For my testing, I used the all-foam Bear mattress. Because the ends of the wooden planks aren’t just placed on the frame and have their own groove that they snap into place, I felt really supported on the City bed frame.
The middle slats don’t have grooves to rest in, so I did notice them making some noise while I shifted around on the frame. But over all, this is a relatively quiet frame. And because everything isn’t relying on tight screws to be connected, as I shifted around on the Bear mattress, I didn’t notice any swaying of the frame, either.
This is a rather low frame that doesn’t have too much space underneath it. If you have a thin mattress, you should still feel pretty supported. But just know that you’ll be pretty low to the ground. This frame shouldn’t need a box spring, but if you prefer to have your bed higher up, I’d consider using a box spring or look for a taller frame.

Warranty
Avocado offers a 10-year warranty on the City bed frame. This will cover defects in workmanship or manufacturing, but won’t cover general wear and tear. In my opinion, considering how sturdy the wood felt, this should last the length of its warranty.
Shipping & Returns
Avocado mentions that all sales are final for its furniture, so returns or exchanges are not possible for the Avocado City bed frame. There will be a flat-rate shipping charge as well, and the frame will arrive in either two or three boxes depending on whether or not you opted for the headboard.

How much weight can the Avocado City bed frame hold?
According to Avocado, anywhere between 800 to 1,500 lb. After assembling the frame, everything held quite firm and there didn’t seem to be anything that appeared loose. The mattress I tested the frame on was about 100 lb, and I’m about 280 lb myself. The frame showed no sign of buckling or bending.
What if I don’t like my Avocado City bed frame?
Unfortunately, the Avocado frame is not eligible for returns or exchanges. If you don’t end up loving the frame, donating or finding a way to recycle it is the way to go.
Does the Avocado mattress need a box spring?
No. The Avocado mattress has sturdy coils at the bottom of the mattress, and the City bed frame is quite sturdy. This combination should keep your mattress well supported. However, the frame is rather low to the ground. If you prefer your bed to be taller, consider using a box spring. But it’s not necessary.
