TEMPUR-Pedic has been at the forefront of the mattress industry for decades now and has become a household name. Like most brands, TEMPUR-Pedic sells just about everything you’d need to deck out your mattress, and that includes a mattress protector.
In my unbiased TEMPUR-Protect® mattress protector review, I put the topper through a few tests to see what it can offer. My testing process included testing the waterproofing, how loud or quiet the protector is and sleeping on it to see if it traps heat. Keep reading to find out all the details.

TEMPUR-Protect Mattress Protector Overview
TEMPUR-Pedic makes a number of memory foam mattresses like the TEMPUR-LuxeBreeze and the TEMPUR-Cloud, which we’ve reviewed before. But of course TEMPUR-Pedic wants to make buying a new mattress as easy as possible and has just about everything from pillows, to sheets to mattress toppers.

TEMPUR-Protect Mattress Protector Performance
Mattress protectors can do a number of things for your mattress, so let’s cover how the TEMPUR-Protect protects your mattress.
Liquid Protection
The TEMPUR-Protect® is waterproof and will help keep spills or accidents from reaching your mattress. I will say, however, that the top polyester layer of the protector is not water repellant. I poured water on the protector, and the water was immediately absorbed by the polyester fabric.
My initial test for liquid protection was checking the mattress underneath immediately. This is for those spills or accidents that happen in bed where you can act immediately. The second test was me letting some water stand on the protector for about 30 minutes to mimic situations where the water may not be immediately noticeable, like if it happens while you’re sleeping.
The backing of the top layer of the protector does a good job at keeping water from getting through to the mattress, even with some elapsed time. So, if you have kiddos who might still wet the bed while they sleep and won’t notice it, their mattress still should be protected with this protector.
Noise
When I fitted the TEMPUR-Protect® on a mattress and rolled around on top of it, I didn’t notice a whole lot of noise. TEMPUR-Pedic doesn’t use any sort of plastic as the waterproof barrier, so this protector was very quiet. And when you add the fitted sheet on top of it, it helps absorb even more noise.
Allergen, Dirt & Dust Protection
Full disclosure, I only tested the TEMPUR-Protect® for about three days. This isn’t really enough time to gauge how well a protector combats allergens, dirt and dust, which is a test that requires much more time. However, because of the added layer of material around your mattress, it’ll stay much cleaner for longer.
It’s made of entirely stretchy material, so it should do a good job of encasing your mattress and should help keep pests from getting to you as well. Plus, it can be machine-washed which can further eliminate dirt, sweat and other things that would normally collect on your mattress without it.
Breathability
The TEMPUR-Protect® is fairly lightweight and was designed with breathability in mind. I didn’t notice any hot spots developing during my tests. However, I should point out that the backing of the top layer of the protector is made of a soft, rubber-like material. It’s not going to be as breathable as the polyester used to make up the rest of the protector.
Overall, I don’t see this being too much of an issue for hot sleepers though.
Care
The TEMPUR-Protect® protector is machine-washable. TEMPUR-Pedic recommends washing it in cold water with a mild detergent. Then you should tumble dry on low heat. Do not use bleach and do not iron the protector.
The TEMPUR-Protect® is mostly made up of synthetic polyester fabric. The top layer of the protector is 100% polyester that is backed with a layer of polyurethane laminate that acts as the water barrier. The sides are made with a blend of polyester and spandex which gives the protector some stretch.
TEMPUR-Protect Mattress Protector Construction
It can fit mattresses anywhere from 8” to 16” tall with ease. I tested it on the Brooklyn Bedding Essential mattress, which is about 10” tall. The protector fit decently well, but I needed to do some extra tucking on some of the areas where it looked loose.

Sleeping on the TEMPUR-Protect Mattress Topper
With all my testing done, I threw a fitted sheet over the protector and took a quick nap on it. I tend to toss and turn, even during quick cat naps, and the TEMPUR-Protect® never made a lot of noise. This makes sense because there’s no plastic in this protector and because it’s mostly made of fabric, it’ll make about as much noise as a standard top sheet will.
And as a hot sleeper, I didn’t really notice it feeling too hot or feel hot spots develop. I spent close to about an hour on it for this to be sure, so if you’re a hot sleeper like me, this protector is a good pick.

How Does The TEMPUR-Protect Mattress Topper Compare To Other Mattress Protectors?
People need mattress protectors for a variety of reasons, but they all aren’t made the same. The TEMPUR-Protect® is made mostly of synthetic polyester so let’s compare it to the Saatva mattress protector, which is made with organic cotton.
TEMPUR vs Saatva
As I mentioned, the Saatva mattress protector is made mostly of organic cotton, with the only non-organic material being the water barrier, which is a similar polyurethane material that TEMPUR-Pedic uses. While both protectors are waterproof, the way they handle liquid is much different.
Water will pool on top of the Saatva projector, meaning that it’s more water repellent. The polyester fabric on the top of the TEMPUR-Protect® is absorbent, so the water will absorb into the protector rather than pool on top.
Both are around the same price point, both can be machine-washed and both have pockets that are 16” deep. I would say both are also good for hot sleepers, but cotton is more breathable than polyester, so the Saatva protector might be better for people who are prone to overheating frequently during the night.

About once a month. Even if the TEMPUR-Protect® doesn’t look too dirty, just like your sheets, it’s collecting dust, sweat and dead skin so regular cleaning is necessary.

It’s highly recommended. TEMPUR-Pedic makes an effort to point out that its specialized TEMPUR material (the memory foam) should never be washed. Liquids can damage the TEMPUR material so for this reason, it’s highly recommended to use a protector with a TEMPUR-Pedic mattre
