Firmness and Feel Differences
Here at Mattress Clarity, we use a firmness scale that ranges from 1-10, with 6.5/10 representing medium-firm. That also happens to be what the Lucid and Tuft & Needle feel like. If you’re searching for something that offers lumbar support and pressure relief, these are both great options.
Sleeping On the Lucid and Tuft & Needle Mattresses
Both beds offer plenty of support for back sleepers. The high-density base foams help support the lower back and keep it in the proper alignment.
Even though these beds have different materials in the comfort layers, they still work well for side sleepers. In this sleeping position, you should feel the top layers cushioning your shoulders and hips.
Generally, we don’t recommend these mattresses for stomach sleepers. In this sleeping position, people need particularly firm beds in order to prevent their hips from sinking out of alignment. Most average and heavyweight stomach sleepers would develop lower back pain on these two beds.
What Do The Lucid And Tuft & Needle Mattresses Feel Like?
The Lucid mattress is less responsive than the Tuft & Needle. If you love that traditional, slow-moving memory foam feel, the Lucid is your best bet.
The Tuft & Needle mattress contains proprietary material that springs back into place after pressure is applied, which makes it feel more balanced than the Lucid mattress.
Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lb – 230 lb
Average weight back and side sleepers should feel comfortable and supported on both the Lucid and Tuft & Needle mattresses. Both beds have high-density base support layers and pressure-relieving comfort layers, so sleepers should be able to keep their spines in the correct alignment in these sleeping positions.
We don’t recommend these mattresses for average weight stomach sleepers because they aren’t quite supportive enough. If you tend to rest in this position, take a look at our list of the best mattresses for stomach sleepers.
Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lb
If you’re a back or side sleeper who weighs closer to 230 lb, you should feel supported on both of these mattresses. Folks who are heavier than 230 lb may need something a bit firmer, such as the Lucid Hybrid or Tuft & Needle Hybrid. Those who weigh closer to 300 lb may need to purchase one of the best mattresses for heavy people.
Neither of these mattresses will work well for heavyweight stomach sleepers. If this is your preferred sleeping position, you’ll want to find a firmer bed.
Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lb
Lightweight people, no matter their sleeping position, should feel comfortable on both mattresses. Smaller folks won’t compress the top layers too much, so they should still get the hip support they need while stomach sleeping.
Mattress Construction Differences
To fully understand the differences between these two mattresses, we’ll need to pull back the cover and look at the construction.
Cover
The Lucid 10” gel foam mattress has a soft and stretchy cover that aids in airflow.
The Tuft & Needle mattress also has a breathable cover, and for an extra $50, you can add antimicrobial protection.
Comfort Layers
The Lucid mattress has two comfort layers. The first, a 3.5” piece of ventilated gel-infused memory foam, helps dissipate body heat. Beneath that, you’ll find a 2” transition layer made out of foam.
Tuft and Needle’s comfort layer is made out of proprietary Adaptive Foam. It feels soft and responsive, and thanks to its ceramic and graphite infusions, it helps pull heat away from the body.
Support Layer
Lucid’s support layer consists of 4.5” of high-density base foam.
Tuft & Needle also has a layer of high-density base foam for support, but this section is open-celled, which makes it more breathable.
Mattress Height
Both mattresses are 10” tall.

Lucid And Tuft & Needle Performance Differences
We now know that these two mattresses are fairly similar when it comes to firmness and construction, but how well do they perform? Let’s take a look at each bed’s cooling features, motion isolation, edge support, and more.
Sleeping Hot or Cold
Both mattresses have built-in cooling features. Lucid’s gel-infused memory foam helps pull heat away from the body, and Tuft & Needle’s Adaptive foam feels naturally breathable.
But which one sleeps cooler? We have to give the win to Tuft & Needle. This proprietary foam feels more responsive than Lucid’s infused memory foam, so you’re less likely to trap body heat on the Tuft & Needle.
Motion Transfer
If you share a bed with a partner, you’ll want to make sure your mattress isolates motion well. Otherwise, you may wake up when your loved one starts shifting sleeping positions during the night.
Fortunately, because they’re both all-foam mattresses, Lucid and Tuft & Needle isolate motion exceptionally well. We couldn’t name a winner for this category because they’re both great mattresses for couples.
Edge Support
When you sit near the side of the bed, will you feel secure? Or will you feel like you might roll off?
Unfortunately, neither mattress offers great edge support. When you relax near the edges of these beds, you’ll feel the sides sinking in. You may not feel like you’ll completely fall off these beds, but edge support isn’t a strong selling point for these two mattresses.
Durability
Both mattresses should have a decent lifespan, but we expect the Tuft & Needle to last a bit longer thanks to its proprietary foam and sturdy base layer. The Lucid mattress should last 5-7 years, while the Tuft & Needle should last 7-10 years.
Off-Gassing
Because they’re both bed-in-a-box mattresses, you will notice a slight chemical smell after you unbox them. This is totally normal, and we even have a word for it in the mattress industry: Off-gassing. But you don’t have to deal with the odor forever. After two days, the smell should completely fade away.
Noise
The Lucid and Tuft & Needle mattresses are both completely silent. Neither mattress contains springs, so we don’t expect them to create sound as time goes on.
Sex
Typically, couples looking for one of the best mattresses for sex want a bed that’s easy to move around on. While neither bed will feel as springy as an innerspring or hybrid mattress, the Tuft & Needle is a better choice for getting intimate. The Lucid mattress’s thick memory foam layer may make couples feel like they’re “sinking inside” the mattress, which can make it difficult to switch positions.
Company Policies
Last but not least – company policies! You can’t neglect to read the fine print before buying a new bed. Here’s what you can expect whenever you order from Lucid or Tuft & Needle.
Warranty Info
Both mattresses are backed by 10-year limited warranties.
Sleep Trial
Lucid’s sleep trial period lasts 30 days, while Tuft & Needle offers an impressive 100-day trial.
Return Policy
Not a fan of your bed? Don’t stress. As long as you return your mattress within the trial period, you can get a full refund.
FAQs
For more information about these two popular mattresses, check out our FAQ section below.
Which mattress is better, Lucid or Tuft & Needle?
It’s difficult to name one mattress a clear winner because people require different things from their beds. We will say, however, that Lucid is a better pick for folks who like a slow-moving memory foam feel, and Tuft & Needle is better for people who want something more responsive.
How long will the Lucid and Tuft & Needle mattresses last?
The Lucid 10” gel memory foam mattress should last 5-7 years, while the Tuft & Needle mattress should last 7-10 years.
Can you flip the Lucid and Tuft & Needle mattresses?
No, these are not flippable beds. If you were to turn them upside down, you’d rest on the firm base layer rather than the plush comfort foams, and this wouldn’t feel comfortable.
