Sleeping On the Nectar and Purple Mattresses
Generally, the Nectar Hybrid mattress works well for both back and side sleepers. Because it has a medium-firm feel, though, it’s not a great choice for stomach sleepers. In this sleeping position, folks need especially firm mattresses to promote the proper spinal alignment.
Purple’s gel grid feels soft and squishy when you first touch it, but it provides excellent support after you apply pressure. For that reason, it feels significantly different depending on your body type. Most average weight people should feel comfy and supported while back and side sleeping, but lightweight people may not get the pressure relief they need. We don’t recommend the Purple Hybrid Premier mattress for most stomach sleepers, though it’s possible that smaller folks will get the support they need in this sleeping position.
What Do The Nectar And Purple Mattresses Feel Like?
The Nectar Classic Hybrid mattress has a balanced feel. When you rest on top of it, you’ll notice the slow-moving gel foam right away. But thanks to its springy coil system, it’s still fairly easy to move around on top of this mattress.
The Purple mattress contains a special hyper-elastic polymer grid that feels squishy and firm at the same time. The Purple grid has a springy and responsive quality, making it easy for people to move around on top of it.
Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lb – 230 lb
The Nectar Classic Hybrid mattress works well for average weight back and side sleepers. The thick gel foam contours the body and alleviates pain on pressure points. The coils at the bottom help keep the spine in alignment, so it should work well for folks with back pain. The Nectar Hybrid isn’t a great choice for stomach sleepers, however. This bed isn’t quite firm enough to elevate the hips and keep the spine in alignment.
The Purple Hybrid Premier mattress is a great choice for average weight back sleepers. Whether you weigh 130 lb or 230 lb, the Purple grid should provide the right amount of comfort and support. Side sleepers who weigh between 130 and 150 lb may not compress the Purple grid too much, which will make the mattress feel firmer. Side sleepers in this weight range may need a mattress topper in order to get the pressure relief they need. Folks who weigh more than 150 lb, however, should feel plenty of cushioning in this sleeping position.
Because the Purple Hybrid feels firmer to smaller folks, it could work well for stomach sleepers who weigh less than 150 lb. But generally, we suggest stomach sleepers look for one of the best firm mattresses.
Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lb
The Nectar Hybrid works well for back and side sleepers who weigh between 230 and 300 lb. Those who weigh more than 300 lb may need a bed that feels more supportive, such as one of the best mattresses for heavy people. We also don’t recommend the Nectar Classic Hybrid for heavyweight stomach sleepers.
Heavyweight people compress the Purple grid more than lightweight folks, so larger people will feel lots of body contouring and pressure relief when resting on their backs and sides. The Purple Hybrid still isn’t a great choice for heavier stomach sleepers, however. It’s possible people could develop lower back pain in this sleeping position.
Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lb
The Nectar Classic Hybrid is a great match for lightweight sleepers – no matter the sleeping position! Smaller folks will feel the benefits of the plush comfort layers and supportive base layer.
Lightweight folks don’t sink into the gel grid too much, so the Purple Hybrid Premier will feel a bit firmer – closer to 7.5/10. Because of this, the Purple Hybrid Premier mattress works well for lightweight stomach sleepers but not for smaller back and side sleepers.

The Nectar Hybrid has a cooling, quilted cover with antimicrobial protection.
The Purple mattress has a thin and breathable cover, which works well with the gel grid underneath.
Comfort Layers
In the Nectar Classic’s first comfort layer, you’ll find slow-moving gel memory foam. This material feels particularly luxurious, and the gel infusion helps pull heat away from the body. Beneath this sits a layer of Nectar’s Dynamic Response Foam. This material is made out of responsive polyfoam, which helps prevent sleepers from “bottoming out” or sinking straight into the base layer.
The Purple Premier Hybrid 3 features 3” of its GelFlex grid in the comfort layer. If you need a bit more comfort and body contouring, opt for the Purple Premier Hybrid 4 and enjoy an extra inch of the proprietary gel grid.
Support Layer
The Nectar Classic mattress has a layer of individually-wrapped coils at the bottom, followed by a thin layer of base foam for extra support.
The Purple Hybrid’s support layer is quite similar – you’ll find a layer of responsive support coils and a thin transition layer made out of foam.

Sleeping Hot or Cold
Both mattresses have built-in cooling features, but the Purple Hybrid’s breathable gel grid gives it an advantage. Because there are small holes throughout the comfort layer, the Purple mattress promotes airflow and helps sleepers feel cool all night long. The
Nectar mattress’s gel-infused foam will help dissipate a little bit of body heat, but some sleepers might feel slightly warm on top of this bed.
Motion Transfer
Couples will want to pay close attention to their bed’s motion isolation. If a bed doesn’t absorb movement, you might wake up when your partner shifts sleeping positions during the night.

Edge Support
You can’t forget about edge support! If you’re resting near the side of the bed, you’ll want to make sure you feel secure and stable. Otherwise, you could be forced to sleep toward the center of the bed, and that can be difficult for couples.
While both beds have good edge support, Nectar performs slightly better than Purple. We felt a little bit more secure when sitting along the side of the Nectar. The Purple grid sank under our bodies when we tested it, but it didn’t make us feel like we would completely roll off the bed.
Durability
Both mattresses contain high-quality materials, so we expect them to have an above-average lifespan. For reference, most mattresses last about 7-10 years, and we expect these two beds to feel comfy and supportive for at least a decade.
Off-Gassing
Off-gassing refers to the chemical smell that’s often emitted after customers unbox a new mattress. It’s quite common, and we noticed this smell when we opened the Nectar and Purple Hybrids. It’s nothing to worry about, though, because the smell completely fades away after 48 hours.
Noise
Even though both beds have innersprings, we didn’t notice any noise when we tested them. It’s possible both beds could start to squeak as the years go on, but we don’t anticipate that becoming a huge issue.
Sex
Couples looking for one of the best mattresses for sex typically want a bed that’s easy to move around on. In this category, we have to give the win to the Purple Hybrid. This bouncy and responsive bed makes it especially easy for partners to get intimate. The Nectar’s slow-moving comfort layer might make some couples feel like they’re slightly sinking into the bed.
