In my unbiased FluffCo pillows review, I’ll cover my testing experience for both the down alternative pillow and the down and feather pillow that FluffCo offers. FluffCo Pillows Firmness and Feel

Down alternative and down pillows won’t feel the same, so let’s talk about the firmness and feel for the two FluffCo pillows.

How Firm Are the FluffCo Pillows?

FluffCo offers both versions of its pillows in two different firmness options, soft and firm. For this review, I received the firm options for both.

Even with the firm versions, the down alternative pillow was quite fluffy and for me, I’d still call this a medium-soft pillow. But when I rested on it and compressed the pillow, I still felt some good support.

The down pillow felt a good deal firmer than the down alternative pillow. Though you can fluff it up nicely, once I placed my head on the pillow, the feathers compressed and made a really solid base. So, I agree with this being a firm pillow.

30-60 Min Nap with the FluffCo Pillows

One thing that I noticed before testing was how different the FluffCo pillows were, visually, despite both being the firm versions. The down alternative pillow is tall and fluffy, and the down and feather pillow was considerably flatter. I fluffed up the down and feather pillow, but that fluffing didn’t stay when I actually rested my head on them.

Starting with the down alternative pillow, I really enjoyed using this pillow. It’s soft, fluffy and still gives some good support. I really liked it for back sleeping, and I think it is best for back sleeping. And because it’s so tall, I didn’t feel any straining on my neck when I was sleeping on my side. This pillow does compress a good amount, but not enough for stomach sleeping. Stomach sleepers need a flat pillow to keep their spine in a neutral alignment.  I could feel my neck straining upwards when I slept on my stomach.

Now, in the spirit of being honest and unbiased, I don’t love down pillows. For me, they just don’t offer enough support as a side sleeper. So, while I found good support sleeping on my back with the down and feather pillow, I felt my neck craning downwards when I moved to my side. But because down pillows are great at getting nice and flat, I felt fairly comfortable when I switched to sleeping on my stomach.

What Does the FluffCo Pillows Feel Like?

The down alternative pillow felt fluffy and soft, which is a common characteristic of down alternative pillows. Even though this was the firm version, it still had a good amount of give and felt very cushiony.

The down and feather pillow can be fluffed and is moldable, but can also be compressed quite flat. I found that when I compressed the pillow, it didn’t have as much give as the down alternative pillow did.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 lb – 230 lb

Average weight back and side sleepers should enjoy the firm version of the down alternative pillow. I would recommend the soft version of the down alternative pillow for stomach sleepers because it shouldn’t be as tall or full of fluff as the firm version. This would make it easier to get flat.

Back and stomach sleepers should enjoy either the firm or the soft version of the down and feather pillow. I wouldn’t recommend this pillow for average weight side sleepers as a whole. But if you have narrow shoulders, this pillow could work for average weight side sleepers.

Heavyweight Sleepers – Over 230 lb

Similarly to average weight sleepers, heavyweight back and side sleepers should enjoy and find support with the firm down alternative pillow. As someone who falls in this category, I really enjoyed the firm down alternative pillow for these sleeping positions. Heavyweight stomach sleepers may be able to flatten the firm pillow, but I imagine the soft pillow will work better.

Or just opt for the down and feather pillow if you’re a heavyweight stomach sleeper. I think heavyweight back sleepers should get good support if they like firm down pillows. But I wouldn’t recommend either the soft or the firm down pillow for heavyweight side sleepers, especially if you have broad shoulders. This pillow will get too flat to elevate your head.

Lightweight Sleepers – Under 130 lb

For lightweight sleepers, the soft pillows might work better for all sleeping positions, as they’ll be easier to compress. I imagine the firm down alternative pillow might be too tall for back sleepers, though side sleepers should be fine with how tall this pillow is.

The down and feather pillow should work well for all sleeping positions, no matter the firmness, because feathers compress very easily and have an easier time flattening to a comfortable height.

FluffCo Pillows Construction

Let’s take a look at the materials that make up the FluffCo pillows.

Cover

Both pillows are made with a cotton shell. This gives the pillows a crisp feel on the outside and allows for some good breathability as well.

The down alternative pillow

I should note—for this review, my down alternative pillow had a polyester cover, which changed the feel of the cover. It was more soft and smooth. However, after reaching out to FluffCo, I confirmed that all the brand’s pillows will now be made and shipped with cotton covers.

Core

The down alternative pillow uses 100% polyester fill. The amount of fill will depend on the firmness you choose. Because I had the firm down alternative option, this pillow was jam packed with down alternative fluff.

The down & feather pillow, as the name suggests, combines down clusters and feathers. Within the cover, there are two chambers of feathers: an outer and an inner chamber. The outer pillow uses white duck down while the inner pillow uses duck feathers. The down being on the outside means this pillow will be soft and fluffy, while the inner pillow being full of feathers gives the pillow support.

Height/Loft

Loft refers to the height of a pillow, and different lofts will work better for different sleeping positions. FluffCo doesn’t provide official height measurements for its pillows, but I’d say that the firm down alternative pillow is roughly 6” tall, which is ideal for most side sleepers. The soft version will be slightly less tall due to the fact that it doesn’t have as much fill inside of it.

The down & feather pillow

The down and feather pillow I would say was about 4” to 5” tall, and would compress to even less when resting on it. Like with the down alternative pillow, the soft version may be a bit shorter due to the amount of filling inside of the pillow.

FluffCo Pillows Performance

Let’s go over some other considerations you should keep top of mind before clicking “check out.”

Sleeping Hot or Cold

Neither FluffCo pillow features anything specific in terms of cooling outside of a breathable cotton cover. But during my testing, neither pillow felt overly hot after about an hour of use. Hot sleepers should be fine with either option.

Off-Gassing

The down alternative pillow is not compressed into a box, so it’s ready to go right away. The down & feather pillow is rolled up into its packaging, so it’s best to unpackage it and let it naturally fluff up for about an hour or so before first use.

Care Instructions

The down alternative pillow can be completely machine-washed. FluffCo recommends washing it in cold water with a gentle detergent. From there you can tumble dry it on low heat until fully dried. And optionally, you can add in some tennis balls or dryer balls to make sure it stays fluffy.

The down & feather pillow should only be spot cleaned and if the staining or mess is bad enough, it can be dry cleaned.

Allergies

The FluffCo down alternative pillow should be good for those who need hypoallergenic pillows. Down alternative is known for not trapping allergens or attracting them either, and FluffCo mentions that this pillow has an allergen barrier in its construction.

The down & feather pillow, however, might not be the best choice for those with sensitive allergies. Down tends to trap allergens.

Company Policies

Here are the company policies you can expect when you purchase from FluffCo.

Warranty Info

At the time of writing, FluffCo does not offer a warranty on its pillows.

Sleep Trial

Due to the nature of FluffCo’s return policy, there is no sleep trial or trial period for the FluffCo pillow.

Return Policy

FluffCo offers a 30-day window on returns. However, due to safety and sanitary concerns, FluffCo will only refund unopened pillows. FluffCo may make exceptions, but they are on a case-by-case basis.

If you are returning unopened pillows, FluffCo has a $10 processing fee, but will provide a prepaid shipping label and will refund the purchase. FluffCo also makes a note that items purchased during a “flash sale” are final and not eligible for returns or refunds.

How Do the FluffCo Pillows Compare To Other Pillows?

Down alternative and down feather are common and traditional pillow fillings these days. However, if you might be looking for something new, then let’s compare the FluffCo pillows to two pillows that use memory foam and latex foam from Lagoon and Saatva.

FluffCo vs Lagoon

Lagoon, like Fluffco, is a pillow company. But unlike FluffCo, Lagoon offers eight different pillows. One of the more popular pillows, and one of my personal favorites, is the Otter pillow. This is Lagoon’s adjustable, shredded memory foam pillow. The foam has a gel infusion so it sleeps relatively cool as well.

In terms of differences, there are a good number to talk about. But the most important one involves the feel. The FluffCo down alternative pillow will have a soft, fluffy feeling. The Otter will have that classic, slow-moving memory foam feel to it.

Lagoon Sleep Pillows - Otter Construction

FluffCo does offer its down alternative pillow in two firmness options, but the Otter is completely adjustable. This means that depending on the amount of shredded foam you have in the pillow, the firmness and height will be different.

Finally, let’s talk about price. The FluffCo pillow is offered in either single or double packs. If you opt for the single pillow, it’ll be roughly half the price of the Otter.

FluffCo vs Saatva

The Saatva Natural Latex pillow combines both down alternative and shredded latex foam that make it stand out from the down and feather pillow from FluffCo. Both pillows use a cotton cover, but they will feel different because of the different fills.

A picture of the Saatva Latex pillow's chamber construction.

The FluffCo down and feather pillow has a fluffy and moldable feel. But the firm version of this pillow will feel much firmer than the Saatva pillow. The feathers compress a good amount and provide a solid, firm feeling. The Saatva pillow, on the other hand, is much softer and fluffier because of the down alternative. But the shredded latex core is there to provide some support so you don’t bottom out of the pillow.

If you’re someone who deals with sensitive allergies, however, the Saatva pillow is for you. It uses both organic and synthetic materials that are proven to be hypoallergenic. Down and feathers are known to trap allergens, and this pillow can’t be fully machine-washed to get rid of them.

FluffCo Pillows FAQs

Can you wash the FluffCo pillows?

Only the down alternative pillow can be machine-washed. The down and feather pillow is recommended to be spot clean only or dry cleaned.

What if I don’t like my FluffCo pillows?

Only unopened pillows can be returned for full refunds. If you’ve already opened your pillow and decide that it’s not for you, unfortunately, you cannot return it. FluffCo states the reason is due to health and sanitary reasons.

How long will the FluffCo pillows last?

Several years with good care. The down and feather pillow might be a bit more long lasting than the down alternative, just because the feathers won’t break down and can be fluffed regularly. Down alternative pillows use synthetic polyester or microfibers to make up its fill, and can flatten over time.
