Sleep Number Comforter Materials

Let’s take a look at the materials that make up the Sleep Number Comforter. I received the down alternative model. Sleep Number does a down model, and a customizable comforter, but we’ll be discussing the down alternative model.

Cover

On the outside of this comforter, you’ll find a cover made of high-quality 100% cotton, which is nice and breathable. The cotton used in this comforter has a 300 thread count with a percale weave. Thread count just refers to the number of threads woven into a square inch of fabric, and the lower the thread count, the more breathable a product can be.

The percale weave is a type of weave with a grid-like pattern that leaves fabrics feeling crisp and looking matte.

The down alternative comforter has 10 color options to pick from, so this is great news if you’re looking for something other than plain white.

In the corners of this cover, you’ll find loops that will help attach a duvet cover to the outside.

Fill

While Sleep Number does sell a down version, on the inside of the down alternative, you’ll find the fill material made of 100% polyester. This gives the comforter an ultra-soft feeling.

The fill sits in a baffle box construction and is relatively well distributed throughout. A baffle box construction refers to the way the outer shell is stitched, often in the shape of a square, to ensure that the fill is evenly distributed across the comforter.

Warmth

The Sleep Number down alternative comforter is designed to be an all season comforter. It feels lightweight, but still provides a good amount of warmth. When that chilly feeling strikes, you can pull it on and feel nice and cozy.

Allergies/Allergens?

The down alternative fill used is hypoallergenic, so this comforter shouldn’t trigger any allergies.

This comforter also carries an OEKO-Tex Certification, meaning it is chemical and toxin free, too!

Sleeping With the Sleep Number Comforter

For this review, I received the full/queen size essential down alternative comforter set. This included the comforter and two pillow shams.

As a hot sleeper, when I pulled the sleep number on, it didn’t take me very long to heat up. In fact, I found myself taking the comforter off rather quickly. At the time, it was still rather warm out, and I prefer to use thin sheets until the winter time.

I think the Sleep Number down alternative comforter is going to be a great option for those cold winter months, but if you’re a hot sleeper, you may not need it year round.

On the flip side, if you run cold or tend to get cold rather quickly at night, having the option to use this comforter year round is a huge plus.

Caring for the Sleep Number Comforter

Comforters have specific instructions when it comes to their care. Per Sleep Number’s care instructions, here’s how you wash the Sleep Number comforter.

To start, machine wash on a gentle cycle in cold water with a mild detergent. You may want to consider one or two additional rinse cycles to ensure that all the residue is washed off.

From there, move it to the dryer and tumble dry on low. To fluff the comforter, take it out every 30 minutes or so to make sure the fill is evenly distributed. You should never iron or steam this comforter.

It’s also recommended to use large capacity, front loading washers. You can learn more about washing comforters in how to wash a comforter.

How does the Sleep Number Comforter Compare to other Comforters?

When shopping for a comforter, it’s a good idea to take a look at some other products on the market. Let’s see how the Sleep Number Comforter compares to a couple of other comforters.

Sleep Number vs Buffy

Down alternative comforters are a great option for people with sensitive allergies. If you also happen to be a bit of an eco-conscious shopper, then you may have heard of the Buffy Cloud comforter.
Unlike the Sleep Number which has a cotton cover, the Buffy features a eucalyptus cover. This gives it a very soft feel over the crisp feeling of the Sleep Number.

A man feels the top of a comforter.

Going inside these comforters, the Sleep Number features 100% polyester microfibers for its fill, while the Buffy comforter has a fill made from recycled plastic bottles turned into fluff. Because they don’t feature anything that will trigger allergies, or trap common allergens, both are great hypoallergenic picks.

For care, the Buffy can be washed in a machine, but it’s recommended that you dry clean it. The Sleep Number comforter is fully machine washable.

The two comforters are relatively close in price, with the Buffy comforter coming in just a little bit lower.

Who Should Get the Sleep Number Comforter?

  • Fans of crisp feeling cotton comforters
  • Anyone looking for a comforter with easy care

Who Should Get the Buffy Comforter?

  • Anyone looking for an eco-friendly comforter
  • Fans of soft feeling comforters

Sleep Number vs Riley

One other comforter that combines a cotton cover and a down alternative fill is the Riley Comforter.

Unlike the Sleep Number, the Riley comforter comes in two warmth options, an all season model and an extra warm. If you tend to be a hot sleeper, then the all season model would work better for you. But if you get cold quickly, then the extra warm option would work better.

Both comforters feature down alternative fills, and can act as a duvet insert.

If you’re looking to dress up a room, the Sleep Number comforter has a variety of color options to choose from, while the Riley comforter only comes in white.

Finally, in terms of price, the Sleep Number comforter is the more affordable option.

FAQs

Still have questions after reading our Sleep Number comforter review? We’ve compiled a list of some of the most frequently asked questions.

Is down alternative better than down?

Comforters that use a down fill are more traditional than down alternative. However, feathers can trap common allergens in your sleep environment.

If you have sensitive allergies, or just want animal free products, comforters that have a microfiber down alternative fill are your best bet.

RELATED: Best Comforters

Is down or down alternative better for hot sleepers?

Because down features feathers, there’s more room for air to flow through the comforter. Down alternative comforters feature materials that take up more space, like Sleep Number’s polyester fill. If you’re looking for something to keep you cool, down might be the better option.

Sleep Number offers their comforter in both a down and down alternative model.

What if I don’t like my Sleep Number Comforter?

If you decide that you don’t like your Sleep Number comforter, you can send it back during the trial period for a full refund. If you found that the model you had was too small, like a twin/twin xl, you could even exchange it for a bigger model, like a queen or a king size comforter.
