30-60 Min Nap with the Baloo Weighted Blanket

For this review, I received the 20 lb weight option from Baloo. I’m a bigger guy coming in around 280 lb, so the blanket felt a bit lighter to me than it might feel for someone lighter than me. But I really felt the heft of this blanket right out of the box.

I was impressed with the soft cotton cover and this blanket has a quilted design that keeps the glass bead fill evenly distributed. I didn’t have to worry about the weight sifting or clumping in one corner. And there are some big squares and smaller, thinner rectangles in this sewn-through design, which adds some variance to the blanket and, in my opinion, helps keep the fill evenly distributed even more.

A man sleeps on his back while using the Baloo weighted blanket.

When it came time to nap with the blanket, I should point out that I tested this blanket in the middle of a Texan summer. It can reach 100 degrees outside by midday easily, and I tend to run hot in general. With that said, I did notice some initial warmth from this blanket. Weighted blankets are blankets after all, so extra warmth will come with the territory.

However, as I settled in and my body temperature adjusted, I felt quite comfortable. I really felt more of the weight around my legs rather than my torso, but if I had the heavier 25 lb blanket, I think I would have felt that weight around me even more.

I tend to toss and turn when I sleep, but when I use weighted blankets, I don’t. It’s mainly because it can be a hassle for me to lift the added weight and change to the other side. So if you’re like me, and don’t always enjoy tossing and turning, weighted blankets might be a good way to help you stay in one spot all night.

How Much Does the Baloo Weighted Blanket Weigh?

The Baloo weighted blanket has four weight options that come in three different sizes. The 12 lb option is a twin-size blanket. The 15 and the 20 lb options are queen-size, while the 25 lb blanket is a king-size.

If you’re not sure which weight selection is right for your weighted blanket, it’s a good idea to take 10% of your body weight (or divide your weight by 10). This is the general rule of thumb, though you can pick any weight option you prefer. But it is recommended to pick something 10% of your body weight.

How Does the Baloo Weighted Blanket Feel?

As mentioned earlier, I tested out the 20 lb weighted blanket. I definitely felt a bit of added weight from this, but as a bigger guy myself, I would have really felt the weight of the 25 lb option more. Overall, I think this is a great option for most average weight adults who want a high-quality weighted blanket.

A hand runs across the smooth top of the Baloo Weighted Blanket.

You should experience that “hugging sensation” weighted blankets are known for. And the cotton cover feels very soft to the touch, too. So, overall, it’ll feel quite cozy and comfortable underneath the Baloo weighted blanket.

Baloo Weighted Blanket Performance

Let’s talk about a few more important factors about the Baloo weighted blanket.

Sleeping Hot or Cold

Baloo uses high-quality cotton in the outer cover of its weighted blankets. Cotton is a naturally breathable material, and Baloo mentions this blanket was designed to work in any season. While I didn’t experience it trapping heat after I settled into using the blanket, I do think if you tend to run hot, overheat quickly or live in a very warm climate, using this blanket might be a seasonal thing.

But if you’re someone who gets cold quickly or lives in a colder climate that doesn’t get as hot during the summer time, using this blanket is a great option. Personally though, I would only use it in the wintertime.

Care Instructions

The Baloo weighted blanket is machine-washable. Simply wash it in a cold water cycle with the detergent of your choice and tumble dry on low heat.

I should note that while this weighted blanket can be machine washed, I’d recommend it being the only thing that you wash in that load. Weighted blankets are, as the name suggests, weighted and heavy, so exercise caution when washing one. They do have the potential to damage machines that aren’t meant to handle heavy or bulky loads.

Allergies/Allergens?

While not listed as a hypoallergenic product, Baloo mentions that the cotton used is chemical-free and vegan. It shouldn’t trap allergens in your sleep environment and you can machine-wash it for added protection.

Baloo Weighted Blanket Construction

Baloo uses high-quality cotton for the outer cover. This cotton is soft and smooth and not crisp at all. It’s been sewn through with a quilted design to help evenly distribute the inner fill, which consists of glass beads.

A wide shot showing the construction of the Baloo weighted blanket.

In the corners and along the sides of the Baloo weighted blanket, there are loops that will allow you to attach a duvet cover to the blanket. This can help keep the Baloo weighted blanket stay cleaner for longer, or add some added color, as the heavier blankets only come in white or gray color options.

Company Policies

Here’s what you can expect when you purchase a blanket from Baloo.

Trial period

While not listed as a full sleep trial, you’ll have a full 30 day window to make any return or exchange decisions.

Return Policy

From the day the Baloo weighted blanket is delivered, you’ll have 30 days to make returns or exchanges. Baloo offers free shipping on all orders in the contiguous United States, so Hawaii and Alaska will have additional shipping costs. This also applies to return shipping.

How does the Baloo Weighted Blanket Compare To Other Blankets

Not sure if this is the right weighted blanket for you? Weighted blankets come in a lot of different styles and materials, so let’s compare the Baloo weighted blanket to two popular weighted blankets on the market from Bearaby and Gravity.

Baloo vs Bearaby

When it comes to comparing the Baloo weighted blanket with the Bearaby weighted blanket, the differences are immediate. The Baloo looks like a standard cotton blanket, while the Bearaby weighted blanket is a chunky knit style. This difference in appearance and construction also makes them perform very differently.

Sleeping with the Bearaby Tree Napper Weighted Blanket

If you’re a chronically hot sleeper, but want to benefit from the calming effects of a weighted blanket, opt for the Bearaby. The Tree Napper blanket is made with TENCEL™ which stays cool and is very breathable. And the chunky knit design also allows this blanket to open up and let air flow through.

The Baloo blanket shouldn’t trap heat, but it’ll add a level of coziness to your rest. Baloo also uses more typical glass beads for its blanket, where the Bearaby gets its weight from the doubled up fabric.

Baloo vs Gravity

Gravity is a popular brand for weighted blankets and is considerably more similar to the Baloo weighted blanket than the Bearaby is. Both feature a traditional blanket style, but the Gravity blanket comes inside a removable outer cover. The Baloo blanket comes as is, but it can act as a duvet insert if you so choose.

Sleeping with the Gravity Cooling Weighted Blanket

The outer cover of the Gravity blanket is soft and minky, meaning it has a bit of a fuzziness to it. The Baloo blanket’s cotton cover is soft and smooth. Only the outer cover of the Gravity blanket is machine-washable, but you can fully wash the Baloo blanket.

Both have different weights that come with different sizes, but Gravity has the heaviest weight option, coming in at 35 lb for a king-size weighted blanket.

Baloo Weighted Blanket FAQs

Is a 25 lb weighted blanket too heavy?

Generally speaking, no. Considering that many companies sell weighted blankets in 25 lb or higher weights, using a 25 lb blanket is fine. Generally, you’ll want to take 10% of your body weight to find the right blanket for your needs.

Who shouldn’t use a weighted blanket?

Small children or people with circulatory problems. The lightest blanket I’ve seen is 5 lb, but generally toddlers, babies or small children shouldn’t use weighted blankets because of the added weight. In the same respect, people with circulatory problems might not want the added weight of a weighted blanket to further compress their veins or cause additional problems than those they are already facing.

If you have any other medical questions about the safety of using a weighted blanket, please consult your doctor. I’m merely using my expertise of testing many weighted blankets to inform my answers, but I’m not a medical professional.

What if I don’t like my Baloo weighted blanket?

You’ll have a 30-day window, from the day the blanket was delivered, to make any return or exchange decisions. If you decide to return the blanket within that time frame, you’ll receive a full refund and Baloo will cover shipping costs if you live in the US, excluding Hawaii or Alaska.
